  1. 10 arrested for sharing content about tourist’s Koh Tao rape claim

    0e33929fe932c67f11b930bcd48690b2-sld.jpe

Ten Facebook users who shared content regarding a rape claim posted to the controversial FB page CSI LA90210, have been arrested for allegedly violating the Computer Act.

They are suspected of causing damages to others and libelling them.

Three others wanted on the alleged offence are still at large. One of them is identified as Pramuk Anantasin, administrator of the FB page.

Earlier reports have identified Pramuk as living in the United States operating the page from there.

The 10 now in police custody have residence in Udon Thani, Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Pattalung and Chiang Mai.

The arrests followed the Court issuing an arrest warrant at the request of police.

Police have accused CSI LA90210, known among Thai netizens as CSI LA, of reporting false information concerning a rape claim by a 19-year-old Londoner, who alleged that she was drugged, robbed and raped during her vacation on Koh Tao island off Surat Thani province in June.

The alleged victim then filed a police complaint on nearby Koh Pangan island. It was still unclear why she did not file the complaint on Koh Tao.

She subsequently alleged that police there had refused to document the rape claim but accepted the robbery claim. Police deny that she had tried to file a rape complaint.

She then travelled back to London and informed her mother of the rape. The mother reportedly alerted UK police and handed over clothes that she claimed contained the DNA of the attackers.

When the complaint went public in UK media, Thai police set up an investigation team to probe the complaint and concluded the claimed rape had not occurred. However the FB page insisted otherwise.

Koh Tao had been infamous worldwide after two British backpackers were brutally killed in 2014.

Troops and officials resumed searches for the bodies of three soldiers who went missing when a racing boat sank in the Nan River in Nan's Muang district on Tuesday morning.

The searches by troops from the 38th Army Circle and officials from other agencies resumed at 6am.

On Tuesday, a racing boat of the Army Circle sank during a practice for the annual race. Most of 49 rowers managed to swim ashore but three of them went missing. They were identified as Privates Narong In-sai, Samphan Oonthin and Yutthapong Boonma.

Nan governor Phaisarn Wimolrat has instructed all tambon administrative organisations downstream from the accident site to join the search.

The operation on Wednesday was carried out by 60 officials on 14 boats while 120 more officials were dispatched to check downriver.

    FILE photo

A Tak woman has died of rabies a year after she was bitten by a dog in Surat Thani, raising the rabies death toll to 16 this year, the director general of the Disease Control Department said on Wednesday.

Dr Suwanchai Watanayincharoen said he received a report that the 50-year-old woman died in Tak during the past week.

Suwanchai said the woman was bitten by a dog on the back of her hand in Surat Thani a year ago and had not received any rabies shot. The director general said the dog has no record of receiving a rabies shot either.

Fifteen of the cases were caused by dog bites and another from a cat bite, he said.

The deaths were recorded in Buri Ram, Rayong, Surin, Songkhla, Trang, Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phatthalung, Nong Khai, Yasothon Kalasin, Mukdahan, Tak and Surat Thani, he added.

MINNEAPOLIS/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The founder and chief executive of Chinese retailer JD.com Inc, Richard Liu, was arrested in Minneapolis last week following an allegation of rape, according to a public information report released by police on Tuesday.

Liu, identified in the report by his Chinese name Liu Qiangdong, was released from custody on Saturday without being charged, and he returned to China.

Earl Gray, a Minnesota-based lawyer for Liu, said on Monday that the Chinese businessman has denied any wrongdoing and that he did not expect his client to be charged.

On Tuesday, defense attorney Joseph Friedberg said, "They are not going to charge in this case. There's no credible complaint."

Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder said on Tuesday that if there were any charges against Liu they would not be filed until completion of a criminal investigation that would not occur before Friday.

The police report shed a bit more light on the nature of the accusation, which authorities had previously left vague. It said the alleged offense was "criminal sexual contact - rape," and said domestic violence was not involved.

It gave no further details, but Elder said the alleged attack reportedly occurred at 1 a.m. local time on Friday, and that Liu was taken into custody later that evening.

Elder declined to disclose whether any accuser was cooperating with police. "I wouldn't address that. That goes to the investigation," he said.

JD.com Inc's stock fell as much as 7 percent on Tuesday, hitting an 18-month low, reflecting investor uncertainty. Shares in China's second largest e-commerce company closed down 6 percent at $29.43 on Tuesday on the Nasdaq and were steady after hours.

JD.com's rules require Liu, who holds nearly 80 percent of the company's voting rights, to be present at board meetings for the board to make decisions, although it was not clear if he has to be physically present or could participate by teleconference.

The company counts Walmart Inc, Alphabet Inc's Google and China's Tencent Holdings as investors. It faces stiff competition from rival Alibaba Group Holding Ltd at home.

"If this spirals as a media focus, negative attention could offset some of the positives associated with endorsement by Walmart and Google," analyst Rob Sanderson of MKM Partners said.

"Negative publicity could also compromise JD.com's ability to attract international brands to its marketplace, which has been a top focus of the CEO over the past two years or so," Sanderson said.

Liu lost a court battle in Australia in July to keep his name out of a sexual assault trial. Liu was not accused of any wrongdoing in that case, according to a court document.

The case involved a person who had been a guest at a party hosted by Liu at his home in Sydney 2015 who accused another guest of sexually assaulting her at a hotel. The defendant was found guilty of seven offenses.

In scenes resembling a demolition derby, eight cars and seven motorcycles crashed to a halt after running into mud spilled across the road by a six-wheel truck in Bangkok's Bang Khen district early on Wednesday.

Police said the multiple accidents happened on the outbound Ram Indra road in Tha Raeng sub-district, where the truck had spewed piles of mud on the road for about 500 metres.

The cars were damaged when they collided with the piles while the motorcycle riders were unable to stay upright on a muddy slick that sent men and machines skidding to the ground.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has overtaken the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), a poll showed on Tuesday, days after some of the most violent protests by radical right-wingers the country has seen in decades.

Some 6,000 supporters of the AfD and anti-Islam PEGIDA joined protests in the eastern city of Chemnitz on Saturday, following other demonstrations last week, after a fatal stabbing on Aug. 26. Two immigrants were arrested for the killing.

An INSA opinion poll on Tuesday put the AfD up half a percentage point at 17 percent, with the SPD, who share power with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives, slipping by the same amount to 16 percent. Merkel's conservative bloc was on 28.5 percent.

Germany's next electoral test comes on Oct. 14 when Merkel's Bavarian allies face a major challenge from the AfD for state government.

The AfD, the third-biggest party in last year's election and the main opposition, seized on the killing of a 35-year old German in Chemnitz and the subsequent arrests of a Syrian and Iraqi to ramp up criticism of Merkel's open-door asylum policy.

Prosecutors said on Tuesday they were looking for a third suspect and Der Spiegel reported there was some doubt about the identity of the two already under arrest.

Merkel, who has been criticised for remaining largely silent during days of protests, plans to visit the city, a spokesman said. No date for the visit has been set.

Images showed skinheads at last week's protests chasing migrants through the streets, hurling bottles and fireworks, and making Nazi salutes, illegal in Germany.

Calls have mounted for the domestic intelligence agency to place the AfD under surveillance.

Bjoern Hoecke, an AfD leader from the state of Thuringia who has criticised Germany's main memorial to the victims of the Holocaust as a "monument of shame" and wants Germany to re-write its history books, took part in Saturday's march in Chemnitz.

In a show of resistance, some 65,000 people attended a rock concert "against xenophobia" on Monday night in Chemnitz, given by mostly left-leaning groups.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump blasted CNN and NBC News yet again in a tweet on Tuesday, criticizing NBC's handling of a story on movie producer Harvey Weinstein and suggesting a "look at their license," without specifying what exactly he was calling for.

Trump has frequently criticized the U.S. news media for what he has said is unfair coverage of him.

"I have long criticized NBC and their journalistic standards-worse than even CNN. Look at their license?" he wrote in the tweet, which cited the outlet's coverage of Weinstein.

Ronan Farrow, a reporter, has said NBC News blocked him from working on a story about Weinstein, who is facing criminal rape and sexual assault charges and a civil lawsuit for sex trafficking. A former NBC producer corroborated Farrow's allegations.

Farrow later published the story in the New Yorker magazine. NBC News has defended its handling of the story. Weinstein has denied ever having nonconsensual sex.

Comcast Corp, which owns NBC News, declined to comment. Following the tweet, a decline in the price of Comcast shares on the Nasdaq extended slightly.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission did not immediately comment on the tweet, but in October the FCC's chairman said the agency does not have authority to revoke broadcast licenses over editorial decisions.

Late on Tuesday, Trump tweeted that Chuck Todd, the host of "Meet the Press," a news show on NBC, suggested that it was "time for the press to stop complaining and to start fighting back."

"Actually Chuck, they’ve been doing that from the day I announced for President. They’ve gone all out, and I WON, and now they’re going CRAZY!," Trump said on Twitter.

Trump blasted NBC and other TV networks last October, calling their news "Fake" and suggesting he would "challenge" their licenses.

Democratic FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel responded to Trump's most recent tweet by posting the FCC rules on licensing. "One more time...this is not how it works," she wrote on Twitter.

The FCC, an independent agency, does not issue licenses to individual networks but to local stations, including those directly owned by broadcasters such as Comcast through NBC.

The agency has said the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution "expressly prohibits the commission from censoring broadcast matter" and that its role "in overseeing program content is very limited."
