  5. Bangkok is set for an unprecedented Songkran, the annual water festival. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has plans to incorporate the festivities into the government’s soft power promotion policy, making this year’s festival more grandiose. The announcement came from Chadchart Sittipunt, the governor of Bangkok, yesterday. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had a meeting discussing the city’s readiness for the festival, which is scheduled to take place from April 10 to 18. The famed Khao San Road will serve as the primary site for Songkran in the city, with connections to Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue and Sanam Luang. These locations have been chosen by the TAT to host the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024 in the Thai capital, according to Chadchart. These venues, along with several other Songkran celebration sites around the country, have been selected to represent the diverse regions of Thailand. The TAT has singled out Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue and Sanam Luang as Bangkok’s official Songkran sites, citing their unique embodiment of Bangkok’s distinct identity. The Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024, organised by TAT, will unfold nationwide from April 11 to 15. On February 20, the cabinet green-lit a proposal to allocate 104.87 billion baht (US$ 2,916,296,271) from the government’s central budget to fund the TAT’s Songkran festival. The event is expected to draw in over 200,000 tourists, both Thai and foreign, reported Bangkok Post. The TAT anticipates that this year’s festival will generate around 3.12 billion baht (US$ 86,728,605) in tourism-related income, potentially placing it among the world’s top 10 festivals. As the city prepares Khao San Road and nearby areas for the upcoming festival, Chadchart revealed that the BMA is planning to establish a service centre to assist visitors throughout the festival period. The administration also plans to collaborate with the Metropolitan Police Bureau to manage traffic at Songkran celebration sites and ensure public safety. In addition, security patrols will be increased in areas identified as crime or accident hotspots. Several rapid-response security forces will also be on standby to provide swift action in case of major incidents, Chadchart further explained. by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of Thairath Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 6. Thailand’s household electricity tariffs to remain unchanged until August by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga has affirmed that electricity tariffs for households in Thailand will remain unchanged from May to August, maintaining the current rate of 4.18 baht per unit. 7. Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga has affirmed that electricity tariffs for households in Thailand will remain unchanged from May to August, maintaining the current rate of 4.18 baht per unit. Pirapan, also serving as a deputy prime minister, explained that this decision has been made possible due to the continuation of gas production in the Gulf of Thailand by PTT Exploration and Production Plc (PTTEP). “The present rate will be upheld for as long as feasible, as PTTEP guarantees gas extraction in the Gulf of Thailand from April onwards,” Pirapan revealed. He further commented that other beneficial factors, such as cheaper imported liquefied natural gas, would support the ministry’s endeavour to keep the fuel tariff (Ft) at 4.18 baht (US$ 0.12). Pirapan plans to visit the Erawan gas block, operated by PTTEP, in the Gulf of Thailand to assess its capacity. The Erawan gas block is anticipated to provide a cost-effective gas supply for Thailand, enabling the ministry to sustain the current Ft rate since gas constitutes 60% of fuel used for power generation within the country, reported Bangkok Post. “I am confident that there will be no increase in electricity bills as we are striving to ease financial pressures on the public.” Pirapan has engaged in talks with various stakeholders, including the energy permanent secretary and the energy regulatory commission, to devise strategies to retain the current Ft rate and ensure that it does not surpass 4.68 baht (US$ 0.13) per unit. Presently, the government offers an Ft rate of 3.99 baht (US$ 0.11) per unit for households consuming no more than 300 units of electricity per month. In related news, an exclusive update from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), consumers can breathe a sigh of relief as Secretary-General Komkrit Tantravanich guarantees minimal disruption to household electricity bills. Komkrit reassures the public that from May through August, electricity rates will hover between 4.20 to 4.25 baht per unit. Moreover, this promising price stability is linked to a surge in natural gas supply from the Gulf of Thailand, projected to hit a whopping 800 million cubic feet per day in April. by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 8. NYU doctor dies after dining at Disney restaurant where waitstaff insisted food was allergen-free Jeffrey Piccolo and his wife, Dr Kanokporn Tangsuan//Jeffrey Piccolo FB The husband of a New York doctor has filed a lawsuit alleging she died of an allergic reaction at Disney World and accusing the Florida resort and a restaurant where she died of negligence. His complaint alleges that on October 5, 2023 Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant served Dr Kanokporn Tangsuan food containing allergens despite multiple assurances it would be allergy-safe, according to NBC News Digital. Kanokporn, 42, died that night of a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis, according to a medical examiner’s autopsy report cited in the complaint, which was filed in a Florida circuit court Thursday on behalf of her husband, Jeffrey J. Piccolo. Disney Parks and Resorts did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday. The doctor, Piccolo and his mother went to the restaurant at Disney Springs, a Disney World shopping and dining complex, on October 5 for dinner, the complaint says. They chose to eat there believing the restaurant could accommodate her allergies, it says. The lawsuit says Disney and Raglan Road have said that accommodating those with allergies is a top priority and that customers can consult with staff members about specific ingredients. The couple told their server that Kanokporn had severe allergies and couldn’t consume food with allergens. When they asked whether specific items were allergen-free, the server responded that they would be made so if ordered, the complaint says. 10. A taxi driver was discovered dead in his vehicle at a gas station in Bangkok’s Jomthong district. The incident occurred early this morning, February 28, and the circumstances surrounding the driver’s death are currently under investigation. The gas station on Kalapapruek Road became an unexpected crime scene this morning when a 59 year old taxi driver, identified as Sathian (surname withheld), was found lifeless in his pink Toyota cab with license plate ทห943. The vehicle was parked with its engine hood open, and the driver’s door ajar, near the station’s restroom facilities. Sathian was found in a semi-reclined position in the driver’s seat, wearing a white shirt and brown three-quarter-length shorts. There were traces of blood on his lips, and no signs of a struggle were evident. Near the vehicle, additional bloodstains were located near a tree on the path to the restroom, where a half-empty beer bottle was also found near the driver’s side door, reported KhaoSod. Closed-circuit television footage from the gas station revealed that Sathian had driven into the station around 6am, opened the vehicle’s hood, and made two trips to fill water for the radiator before entering the men’s restroom. He returned to his car, stepped out to vomit, and eventually lost consciousness beside the vehicle. Kanokwan (surname withheld), the 29 year old deceased driver’s daughter, stated that her father, who suffered from a lung disease, had been out driving the taxi overnight and was supposed to return home in the morning. Despite his condition, hospital examinations had not yet pinpointed the exact cause of his illness. Sathian had been carrying his medication with him regularly. Police Lieutenant Colonel Kanchan Sawasdee, Deputy Inspector (Investigator) at Bang Khun Thian Police Station, and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation responded to the scene, along with forensic doctors from Siriraj Hospital. The body was sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The family was allowed to claim the body for religious rites following the preliminary investigation. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 11. Thai doctor’s allergy leads to fatal dinner at Florida Disney World by Samantha Rose Photo courtesy of Thai PBS World A Thai doctor from New York died after an allergic reaction at a restaurant at Disney World, Florida. 12. A Thai doctor from New York died after an allergic reaction at a restaurant at Disney World, Florida. Her grieving husband is taking legal action against the Florida resort and the restaurant where they dined, alleging negligence in a lawsuit filed recently. According to reports from NBC News Digital, the complaint filed in a Florida circuit court on behalf of Jeffrey J. Piccolo claims that Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant served Dr Kanokporn Tangsuan food containing allergens, despite assurances of allergy safety. The 42 year old Thai doctor succumbed to a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis on the night of October 5 last year, as per a medical examiner’s autopsy report cited in the lawsuit. The trio, Dr Kanokporn, Piccolo, and his mother, opted for dinner at the restaurant in Disney Springs, believing it could cater to her allergies, the complaint states. Despite reassurances from the server and the establishment’s purported commitment to allergy safety, tragedy struck. The couple repeatedly sought clarification on allergen-free options, only to be assured that their chosen dishes would be safe for consumption. Following the meal, tragedy struck. Dr Kanokporn began experiencing difficulty breathing around 8.45pm, collapsing in a nearby restaurant due to the severe allergic reaction triggered by the food served at Raglan Road. Despite administering her EpiPen, her condition deteriorated rapidly, requiring emergency medical attention. Paramedics rushed the Thai doctor to the hospital, where, tragically, she succumbed to an allergic reaction. Piccolo, unaware of the unfolding tragedy, was informed by a bystander who answered his wife’s phone. Upon arrival at the hospital, he received the devastating news of her passing, reported Thai PBS World. An autopsy revealed elevated levels of dairy and nuts in Dr Kanokporn’s system, aligning with her known allergies. However, the validity and significance of these findings, conducted post-mortem, remain under question. The lawsuit, naming the restaurant and Disney Parks and Resorts as defendants, alleges multiple counts of negligence and seeks damages exceeding US$50,000 (approximately 1,800,000 baht). As the legal battle unfolds, it casts a sombre light on the importance of allergen awareness and safety protocols in dining establishments, even within the magical realms of Disney. by Samantha Rose Photo courtesy of Thai PBS World Full story: The Thaiger 2024-02-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 14. A seven year old girl became the unintended recipient of inappropriate images and messages from her father’s new wife, who also targeted the child’s mother with spiteful words. The incident, which occurred today, February 28, has led to a criminal complaint filed by the girl’s family, who are distressed by the new wife’s continuous harassment and aggression. The girl’s aunt, deeply concerned about her niece’s wellbeing, has gone public with the issue after enduring four years of the new wife’s hostile behaviour, which has escalated from verbal abuse to sharing explicit images of her brother, the child’s father, with the young girl. The 36 year old aunt described the new wife’s actions as unacceptable and harmful, especially for a child. The girl’s mother, who works in Krabi province, made an official report to the police, seeking legal action against the new wife. She has maintained her composure and focused on caring for her children despite the ongoing provocation from her ex-husband’s new partner, reported KhaoSod. The father, a 37 year old private company employee, has been caught in the middle of the turmoil. He admitted to having had issues with jealousy from the new wife, which ultimately led to the end of his relationship with the child’s mother. He has now consulted a lawyer to pursue a divorce and is determined to protect his children from further exposure to the new wife’s harmful behaviour. The family’s distress is compounded by the fact that the new wife has been living in their family home, causing friction and discomfort. They accuse her of being aggressive, unreasonable, and incapable of coexisting peacefully with others. They are now seeking a resolution that will ensure the safety and psychological well-being of the children involved. In related news, a six year old Thai girl sustained injuries after her stepmother assaulted her, prompting the child’s distressed father to expose the abuse by posting a video of the incident. The police and social services arrived at the scene to assist the young girl named Aem, who had suffered from the violent actions of her stepmother. 16. A female doctor in Thailand is seeking justice after being attacked by a Swiss man for sitting on the staircase of his beachfront villa in Phuket. The foreign man is reported to be the owner of an elephant sanctuary with alleged connections with the high-ranking Thai police. The father of the victim, Chaiyachot Uttamang, took to Facebook to share the story of his daughter who is a doctor at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Chaiyachot said his daughter was physically assaulted by a 45 year old Swiss man, whose identity remained undisclosed, on the beach at the Yamu Cape in the Thalang district of Phuket at 7.30pm on February 24. According to Chaiyachot, the female doctor and her colleague had dinner at a Taste Yamu restaurant and enjoyed the beach after the meal. They encountered a security guard on the beach who permitted them to relax at the spot, leading them to believe it was a public beach. The doctor sat on the steps connecting luxury villa number 23 to the beach, thinking it was a public staircase. Unexpectedly, she was attacked from behind. When she turned around she found the attacker was a foreign man weighing over 100 kilogrammes. The foreign man, later identified as a Swiss national, recorded a video while assaulting her and kept shouting vulgarities at her and her friend. They rushed to seek help from the security guard, who came to the incident scene with them. Upon their return, they met the Swiss man’s Thai wife and hoped the situation would improve. Saves elephants, hurts women However, the doctor’s hope was shattered when the Thai woman shouted abuse at them. “Hey, bi*ches. Don’t you know that you shouldn’t sit outside my home? I can shoot you two right away, and no one could arrest me because my son is a police officer. I know the police chief, and I will put you in jail. I will call the chief now!” The Swiss man also shouted at the doctor and her friend. “Are you local? Are you Thai? You know, I am not paying a million baht a month to rent this villa for you to sit, OK?” Two police officers arrived 15 minutes later, stating that both parties violated the law. The doctor trespassed on the foreigner’s property and he physically assaulted her. The officers urged the doctor not to file a complaint and asked her to resolve the issue on the spot. Police said the penalty for the trespassing charge was a lot harsher. It can result in four years in jail while the foreign man could pay compensation to end the physical assault charge. According to the doctor, she offered three options to the foreigner and his wife: apologise mutually and end the matter, separate without an apology, or proceed with legal proceedings. The foreigner rejected the agreement and ordered the doctor to apologise to him. He insisted that he would never apologise for the assault and would file a complaint to the police to ensure the doctor went to jail. The doctor decided to file a complaint against the foreign man at Thalang Police Station. She discovered he was the owner of an elephant sanctuary in Phuket, prompting her to question his behaviour. “This man promises to protect elephants but hurts a woman?” Concerned that their complaint might be ignored due to the Swiss man’s influence and connections, the doctor and her father shared their story publicly, hoping to garner support for justice. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ Chaiyachot Uttamang Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 17. AOT and immigration unite to tackle Suvarnabhumi Airport queues by Top Photo via Matichon Airports of Thailand (AOT) and Immigration Division 2 are joining hands to tackle a pressing issue at Suvarnabhumi Airport: inordinately long passenger queues. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1321118-aot-and-immigration-unite-to-tackle-suvarnabhumi-airport-queues/
  18. Airports of Thailand (AOT) and Immigration Division 2 are joining hands to tackle a pressing issue at Suvarnabhumi Airport: inordinately long passenger queues. The urgency to address this problem was triggered by the concerns raised by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin about the prolonged processing times at the airport. AOT President Kerati Kijmanawat and Immigration Division 2’s Police Major General Choengron Rimpadee conducted a subsequent inspection to assess the situation on the ground. Their findings revealed that during peak hours, the airport was juggling between 5,000 to 6,000 passengers per hour. Consequently, immigration procedures were taking up to 1 hour and 30 minutes, a duration that is unacceptable by any standards, reported The Pattaya News. To cut down the wait times to a more reasonable 30 minutes, AOT charted a comprehensive plan that is set to go into action by March 30. This includes the reinforcement of the airport’s workforce by employing an additional 800 staff members. These recruits will be tasked with conducting searches and guiding passengers through the airport to expedite the process. In unison with AOT’s efforts, immigration authorities are also set to bolster their strength during busy periods. As of March 1, they have positioned 200 new immigration officers at the airport. This number is expected to double by the end of the year, providing a strong impetus to the airport’s passenger handling capabilities. The plan doesn’t stop there. To further expedite the immigration process, 80 extra automatic channels, fitted with improved passport-checking software, will be up and running by July 15. Furthermore, 20 new gates are slated for installation by June 15. These enhancements will incorporate state-of-the-art technology that can scrutinise power banks without requiring passengers to take off their shoes. Another significant step towards improving the passenger experience at the airport is the introduction of a Common Use Passenger Processing System. This system allows passengers to independently check-in and load their baggage, reducing the dependence on airport staff. To make optimal use of this system, AOT is urging airlines to open their check-in counters four hours before departure. Leadership acknowledgement In a quote from the original article, Police Major General Choengron Rimpadee said, the new system will allow passengers to check-in and load their baggage without assistance, which will significantly reduce waiting times. The combined efforts of AOT and Immigration Division 2 signal a substantial push towards improving the passenger experience at Suvarnabhumi Airport. By leveraging technology and increasing manpower, they aim to streamline processes and reduce waiting times, ensuring a smoother and more efficient journey for all travellers passing through the airport. by Top Photo via Matichon Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
