  1. Forest fires ablaze along the Thai-Cambodian border have ignited chaos, choking Khao Phra Wihan National Park in Sisaket province with clouds of thick smoke and dust particles, forcing a three-day shutdown. The infernos, wreaking havoc on the region’s flora and fauna, including monkeys, bats, and birds, have sparked concerns for both tourism and wildlife preservation. Sisaket Governor Anuphong Suksomnit, undertook a dusk visit to Pha Mo E-Daeng, a towering cliff within the national park, to assess the dire smoke situation. With park officials, firefighters, soldiers, and border patrol police mobilised, armed with water trucks and essential equipment, a vigilant stance has been adopted to combat the relentless forest fires. In a decisive move, authorities have mandated the temporary closure of Khao Phra Wihan National Park from today to Sunday, as communicated through the park’s official Facebook page. Camping sites and overnight accommodations at Pha Mo E-Daeng and Noen Nab Dao tourist areas are off-limits during this period, reported Bangkok Post. Assessing the scenario, Anuphong affirmed that manpower and equipment from all concerned agencies stand poised for action. In related news, sweeping fires engulfed an estimated 30,000 rai (approximately 4,800 hectares) of forest across three districts in the province of Chiang Mai, reported local authorities. The flames, which sparked roughly a week ago, primarily ravaged the Ob Luang National Park. The districts of Hot, Chomg Thong, and Mae Cham are the most severely impacted, with the fires still ablaze and uncontained. The source of these devastating fires is thought to be residents’ practices of foraging for edible foods and burning leftover farm waste. In other news, wildfires in the province of Tak have intensified, expanding across nine districts and prompting coordinated emergency responses to combat the flames and prevent hazardous smog, including the dangerous PM2.5 particles. The province’s governor Somchai Kitcharoenrungroj has mobilised all units for swift action to contain the wildfires within a limited area to minimize damage and reduce smoke haze. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 2. Chinese man faces 2-year jail for stealing identity of Thai citizen by Petch Petpailin Photo via One 31 Pattaya Provincial Court sentenced a Chinese man to two years of imprisonment for stealing the identity of a Thai citizen and concealing it for more than 30 years. 3. Pattaya Provincial Court sentenced a Chinese man to two years of imprisonment for stealing the identity of a Thai citizen and concealing it for more than 30 years. The 45 year old Chinese suspect is recognised by Thai locals as Iao but also adopts the Thai alias Nitiphat Chokchaitanaporn. The case of identity theft came to light following a raid on a drug-fuelled party at Club One in Pattaya on October 22, 2022. During the operation, Thai police found narcotics and drug paraphernalia inside the club. Over 200 party attendees declined drug testing and managed to evade capture by fleeing the club. Iao presented himself as the owner of the nightclub. He appeared angry and threatened officers. He claimed to know influential police officials in Pattaya and allegedly bribed them. His use of the Thai language with a Chinese accent raised suspicions among the authorities. Further investigation uncovered that Iao was a nominee, and the actual owner of the nightclub was a Chinese man named Yu Chang Fei. Thai police arrested Yu as he attempted to flee to Laos, charging him with operating an illegal nightclub. The focus then shifted to Iao’s nationality. Iao denied the accusation and insisted that he was a Thai citizen. He also presented his identification card which was issued in Trat province in 1992 when he was 15 years old to officers. 30 years hiding Iao altered both his name and surname multiple times and was issued new ID cards on several occasions. Records indicate that Iao initially registered under the name Teera Jongpithakwasin before changing it to Nitiphat Chokchaitanaporn in 2007. Iao declared that his father was Chinese while his mother was a Thai woman living in the Isaan province of Nakhon Ratchasima. According to the civil registration, Iao’s mother was a Thai woman named Muay Itsomboon and his sister was a Thai woman named Sunee Itsomboon. The two denied any relation and stated they had never met him. Gathering evidence for actions that occurred over 30 years ago proved challenging for the authorities. Nevertheless, conflicts in Iao’s personal information and available evidence led the court to conclude that he stole the identity of a Thai citizen who might have died a long time ago. Pattaya Provincial Court, yesterday, announced that Iao violated the Identification Card Act by reporting fake information to officials, including fake information in official documents, using fake official documents which could cause damage to others, and issuing ID cards with fake information. Iao received a two-year prison sentence without parole and was transferred to prison immediately. Despite the court decision, Iao continues to deny the accusations, as reported by Channel 7. 5. Swiss man’s seaside paradise turns sour as Phuket police press assault charges after doctor’s complaint by James Morris and Son Nguyen Scenes from Thalang Police Station in Phuket on Thursday where Dr Thandao, a doctor at Dublik Hospital, pressed criminal charges against 45-year-old Swiss expat Uli Fehr for assault. (Inset Top) Uli Fehr apologises profusely at a high-profile press conference on Friday. (Inset bottom) Screenshot from the damning video clip. It shows the enraged Swiss man marching purposefully and shouting expletives. He then appears to assault the Thai woman. Swiss expat Uli Fehr’s assault on Thai doctor Thandao Chandam on Makha Bucha Day incites public outrage in Phuket. The expat now faces a police investigation and a review by provincial authorities. This raises the prospect of legal proceedings, a conviction and possible deportation. That is unless the matter can be resolved amicably between the parties. However, charges are now being pressed. A Swiss man living in Phuket has had rather a bad week. At length, he may be facing a possible criminal prosecution and ultimately deportation from Thailand. Mr Uli Fehr, also known as David, gave a hurried press conference on Friday apologising unreservedly to a young Thai female doctor. It came after he allegedly physically assaulted the woman on Makha Bucha Day. Evidently, he kicked her in the back as she sat on steps leading from a million baht-a-month seaside residence. A video of the incident, ironically recorded by the accused, has since been released. The public video clip, it appears, corroborates the testimony of the young Thai woman. Certainly, it has also sparked outrage among the public not only in Phuket but across Thailand. The case raises possible concerns about anti-foreigner sentiment. A middle-aged Swiss man has landed in hot water in Phuket. It comes following a heated altercation with two Thai women on Makha Bucha Day on February 24th. The Swiss national is known in Phuket for links to an admired elephant conservation centre. 6. 2 Chinese men arrested at Bangkok airport for fake Canadian passports by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ ToKo Officers from the Immigration Bureau arrested two Chinese men at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok for attempting to travel to Taiwan on fake Canadian passports. 7. Officers from the Immigration Bureau arrested two Chinese men at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok for attempting to travel to Taiwan on fake Canadian passports. EVA Air check-in staff reported to the immigration police that two Chinese nationals presented their Canadian passports at the counter for the flights to Taipei in Taiwan. According to the flight schedule, the two were to continue their journey at Taipei Airport on a transit flight to Vancouver, Canada. EVA Air told police that the two Chinese passengers had no history of travelling to Canada and were unable to communicate in English. Police rushed to catch the two Chinese men, later identified as 48 year old Jian Bo and 49 year old Pin Hua, at Gate E3 before they boarded the flight. They asked to see the Canadian passports and discovered they were fake. Police then checked their luggage and discovered their Chinese passports. Officers found that they travelled from Colombo City in Sri Lanka to Suvarnabhumi Airport with their genuine Chinese passports. The two claimed that they were travelling from Bangkok to Vancouver in Canada in search of a better life. They admitted to buying the fake Canadian passports in Sri Lanka and revealed to the police the seller’s contact information on the Chinese WeChat application. However, the seller declined to cooperate with the officers or furnish them with details regarding the fake passports. The two Chinese men have been charged under Section 263/9 of the Criminal Law for possession and use of forged passports. The prescribed penalty includes imprisonment ranging from one to ten years and a fine ranging from 20,000 to 200,000 baht. A similar case was reported in September last year when a Chinese woman, 44 year old Jian Qi, was arrested at Phuket International Airport for using another person’s passport which belonged to a 28 year old Chinese woman Yi Chih Han. Jian Qi attempted to pass through immigration by claiming that she had undergone numerous plastic surgery procedures, resulting in her face not matching the airport’s online records. However, the officers were unconvinced by her explanation and continued to interrogate her until she confessed to the crime. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ ToKo Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 8. PM Srettha’s billion-baht plan to transform Suvarnabhumi Airport by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced plans to boost the annual capacity of Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Samut Prakan. 9. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced plans to boost the annual capacity of Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Samut Prakan. “We’re gearing up to more than double our capacity to a staggering 150 million passengers annually.” Currently handling a substantial 60 million passengers, Suvarnabhumi Airport is set for a dramatic makeover, including the addition of a third runway. This makeover will catapult its flight-handling capabilities to 90 flights per hour, up from the current 60 flights per hour, by October this year. PM Srettha, who is also the Thai Finance Minister, proclaimed that Suvarnabhumi Airport will break into the top 50 airports worldwide by next year. Currently ranked at a respectable 68th position in the Skytrax World Airport Awards, the government has set its sights on cracking the elite league of the top 20 within the next five years. Addressing concerns voiced by passengers and tourists on social media about long immigration and check-in queues, the 62 year old prime minister assured swift action to enhance the overall airport experience. Moreover, Don Mueang International Airport is also scheduled for a massive upgrade, with its capacity set to surge from 30 million to 50 million passengers annually. This makeover includes the construction of a new terminal for international passengers and an expansion of existing facilities. Not content with just the major hubs, the government plans to uplift regional airports as well. Tourist hotspots like the Andaman region will witness the birth of new airports while existing ones like Phuket and Chiang Mai undergo substantial expansions, added the Bangkok-born prime minister. “Thailand is poised to become the aviation hub of the region.” Echoing these sentiments, Prommin Lertsuridej, secretary-general to the prime minister, underscored the importance of leveraging Thai expertise and resources to drive these airport transformations, reported Bangkok Post. With state-controlled Airports of Thailand (AOT) committing to an investment of around 100 billion baht between 2024 and 2029, Thailand is planning for a significant upgrade of its travel experience. The funds are set to be financed primarily from internal cash flow. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Full story: The Thaiger 2024-03-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 15. Pattaya — Pattaya is experiencing a surge in tourism, with hotels exceeding 90% room occupancy driven by an influx of visitors from China, Russia, and India, alongside a rise in domestic tourism. According to Mr. Sanphet Supabawornsathien, president of the Eastern Thai Hotel Association, this positive trend is fueled by several factors. Russian tourists, seeking respite from the cold and the ongoing war with Ukraine, have chosen Pattaya as their destination, leading to increased flight frequency since late January. This resurgence is further bolstered by the return of Chinese tourists, who began visiting Pattaya earlier this year. Indian tourists are also contributing to the tourism boom. Notably, while domestic Thai tourists were relatively scarce in January, their numbers have significantly risen during recent long weekends, indicating a growing domestic travel interest in Pattaya. 21. March 1, 2024: By implying that Thaksin Shinawatra has received “elitist treatment”, Thailand’s biggest party, which has been presenting itself as a movement opposed to political persecution and victimisation, is courting controversy. Move Forward leader Chaithawat Tulathon was apparently right in saying today that the country’s justice system is weak, but his statement about how the Thaksin affair has been handled smacks of an elitist approach in effecting justice raised questions about claims that the latter had been politically persecuted. What sounds like Chaithawat’s ideological ambivalence was uttered as he defended Move Forward’shesitancy over whether a censure motion should be submitted against the Pheu Thai-led Srettha government. Chaithawat said that although a final decision is yet to be made on how early the no-confidence debate should be, his party viewed the Thaksin issue as an example of wrong justice. The Samranrat Police Station is hot on the trail of the impostor but with no affiliation to their force. Colonel Tossapon Ampaipipatkul, the superintendent leading the investigation, reassured that the police would nab the culprit without fail. However, the audacious thief managed to pull off a daring heist right under the noses of the renowned street-food chef, Jay Fai, and her team. The escapade unfolded when a customer, masquerading as a police inspector on urgent duty, bypassed the queue and ordered a sumptuous takeaway without parting with a single baht. Jay Fai’s daughter, who bravely confronted the con artist, described him as a middle-aged man of modest stature, cunningly exploiting his disguise to whisk away the prized crab meat omelette and Pad Kaprao. Lamenting the absence of security cameras, Jay Fai’s daughter disclosed the rarity of such incidents, though some patrons have also attempted to escape paying their dues. With over three decades of culinary excellence, Jay Fai’s streetside eatery has become a fixture in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district, attracting a flurry of patrons, including Michelin Guide aficionados, reported The Nation.
