  3. Delay in the formation of the new government has caused the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) to adjust its estimate of tourist arrivals this year down to 28 million, from 30 million, which will reduce estimated tourism revenue by about 100 billion, said TCT chairman Chamnan Srisawat. He attributed the anticipated revenue shortfall to the delay in the disbursement of budget for tourism promotion during the third quarter of the year, which is the low tourism season. He also said that concern about political protests is another factor which may discourage tourists from visiting Thailand. Tourist arrivals for the first and second quarters of the year have met the targets of 6 and 7 million respectively, but the 8 million arrivals targeted for the third quarter is likely to be missed by about two million. In an effort to boost tourists visiting, Thailand’s government will be establishing additional tourism offices in the United States and Saudi Arabia, stated the deputy spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek. The proposition comes as part of a refreshed approach to meet international market demands, as directed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is now concentrating on attracting long-haul travellers, primarily from Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. The projected revenue from such endeavours is expected to reach a staggering 1.62 trillion baht by year’s end, Dhnadirek had pointed out. TAT is furthering its reach in the US by inaugurating an overseas office in the city of Chicago, joining existing offices in New York and Los Angeles. Meanwhile, an office will also open in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, to market Thailand as an appealing destination to Middle Eastern and Northern African tourists, Dhnadirek explained. by Neill Fronde Iranian tourists arrive in Phuket, as the TAT targets US and Middle Eastern travellers. 15. Thailand’s ex-prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, and his younger sibling, Yingluck, were notable guests at Cambodian PM’s birthday bash in Phenom Penh at the weekend. Fresh News and The Phnom Penh Post reported yesterday that the 74 year old Thaksin, and his 56 year old sister Yingluck graced the 71st birthday festivities of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in Ta Khmao, Cambodia. The former Thai prime ministers made a brief visit to the country, spending a single night to partake in the celebration. In a recent announcement on Saturday, Thaksin conveyed his plans to delay his return to Thailand from August 10 for about two weeks due to pending medical check-ups. Shinawatra, whose background lies in telecommunications, took to the popular social media platform Twitter to inform followers of his upcoming health checkup, which resulted in the need for him to reschedule his original plan to return to Thailand. Having been overthrown by a coup in September 2006, Thaksin, for the most part, has lived in a self-imposed exile. He briefly came back to Thailand in 2008, only to flee once more prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling sentencing him for conflict of interest during his time as prime minister. by Mitch Connor Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, left, walks together with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in Phnom Penh on Saturday, August 5, 2023. 23. A Thai woman was blown away by an astronomical increase in her electricity bill, with charges skyrocketing from an average of 60 baht per month to an outrageous 11,357.47 baht. This occurred due to what inspection personnel from the local electricity authority would later uncover as a faulty transformer in her fruit garden. Umaphon Tedduang revealed her dilemma via a complaint post on the ‘We are Consumers’ Facebook page, sharing that she usually receives an electricity bill of approximately 60 baht each month; the highest previously recorded was 700 baht. But last month, she was astounded to receive a bill of 11,357.47 baht for her fruit garden’s electricity supply. Taken aback by the sudden surge due to the faulty transformer, she and her father complained with the electricity department, but there was no immediate action. They guessed it may be due to the prolonged national holiday and waited patiently, but there was no resolution or inspection. by Nattapong Westwood A faulty transformer caused an electricity leak that skyrocketed a woman's power bill. 25. The news that Pheu Thai is now in an alliance with the Bhumjai Thai Party to form a government should come as no surprise to longtime observers of Thai politics. Machiavellian measures always trumps ideals in this world. But it does leave a bad taste in the mouth for people who took Pheu Thai at face value over the past few years as they attacked the coalition parties while they were in the opposition. BJT was one of the major targets of their ire and everyone from party leaders to rank and file MPs took turns to criticize their erstwhile enemy. For starters, BJT isn’t just another political entity; it’s a brand sculpted by Newin Chidchob, the very man who notoriously betrayed Thaksin. This godfather-figure of the BJT once stood with Thaksin, only to deal him a political backstab, a Shakespearean move that left political the former aghast. PT embracing BJT is akin to a lover’s arms around the assassin of their beloved. by Cod Satrusayang Full story: https://www.thaienquirer.com/50394/opinion-in-bed-with-the-enemy/ -- © Copyright Thai Enquirer 2023-08-08 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
