Officials may be involved in illegally changing vehicle registration information
Thailand’s Land Transport Department (LTD) has insisted that its officials, who have access to the car registration database, were not involved in the altering of information to apply for new licenses for illegal cars, but a Thai PBS investigative team has discovered that one of the two suspected hackers is very close to one of the officials and can use the official’s computer in his office. A regular visitor to the LTD told Thai PBS that one of the two suspected hackers, “Sathien”, was often seen at the desk of an assistant car inspector and could get in and out of the inspector’s office at will, adding that Sathien’s motorcycle license plate number 9999 is expensive. He said he believes the two suspected hackers could not have hacked into the department’s registration database without the assistance of someone who has access to the system. He also claimed that the actual number of cars which were issued with new licenses through fraudulent means could be higher than the 65 claimed by the police and the LTD. The Democrats have again failed to elect a new party leader and executive committee at a general meeting today (Sunday), as they lacked a quorum. It is the second failed attempt, after the July 9th general meeting collapsed for the same reason. The meeting was held at the Miracle Grand Convention Hotel in Bangkok and was supposed to start at 9.30am. Present where former party leaders Chuan Leekpai, Banyat Bantadtan, Abhisit Vejjajiva and Jurin Laksanawisit and former secretary-general Chalermchai Sri-on, along with other key party members. Chuan says Democrats need a resolution to join Pheu Thai coalition
Former Democrat party leader Chuan Leekpai said today (Sunday) that the party must adopt a resolution, in accordance with the party’s regulations, if it wants to join the coalition led by the Pheu Thai party. Meanwhile, another former party leader, Banyat Bantadtan, said they should focus on rebuilding and restoring the party’s image and popularity, instead of joining any Pheu Thai-led government, adding that, if the party’s executive committee decides to join the coalition, he would have to comply with such decision. The party is currently split, with the north-eastern faction wanting to join the Pheu Thai-led coalition, and one member of the faction recently flying to Hong Kong to meet fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is believed to still calls the shots in the Pheu Thai party. Stickers Placed on Buses and Taxis to Raise Public Cybercrime Awareness
BANGKOK (NNT) - The Royal Thai Police is working with the Ministry of Transport to promote cybercrime awareness amongst users of public transportation. Royal Thai Police Commissioner Damrongsak Kittipraphat and Department of Land Transport Director-General Chirute Visalachitra have been placing stickers on buses and taxis to warn people of cybercrimes frequently perpetrated on public transport vehicles. Authorities reported that close to 90,000 buses and taxis nationwide serve almost 2 million passengers daily. Placing the stickers on these vehicles is expected to raise public awareness about cybercrime threats to passengers and prevent them from falling victim. The Royal Thai Police has been making use of multiple channels to raise cybercrime awareness among the general public, with online reports about such crimes now on a downward trend. The police are also encouraging members of the public to answer a 40-question “cyber vaccine” questionnaire that would increase their awareness of tricks used online by criminals. Between 80,000 and 90,000 people have already participated in completing the questionnaire, seeking to win one of 60 iPhone 14 devices being offered to participants. Many people also completed the questionnaire without expressing any intention of wanting to be eligible for the prize. The Royal Thai Police will present the first batch of the iPhones to the lucky questionnaire takers on August 8.
