  1. This guy will probably have outstanding warrants in the UK. Hence the reason to try and delay his return home.
  2. Roll out the Border Police again to eliminate anybody who is deemed to be involved in drugs. No accountability, no justice. Just extrajudicial executions decided by those who currently hold power.
  3. As China has an authoritarian regime and questioning the police is taboo, this kind of scam works well. Quite incredible really. Then again, once the scammer has instilled a complete sense of panic in the victim, anything is possible.
  4. I used to swap between Sri Racha and Jomtien as I lived halfway in between. However, some services were not offered at Sri Racha and I was told to go to Jomtien. Also, if you are on extensions, I doubt they would like you swapping offices.
  5. I have a DTV and I understand that a 180-day extension is feasible and allowable. However, I have no plan to do this as experience tells me that it will be a much harder experience than a border run. I understand there are locations in Thailand that are inconvenient for border runs, Koh Phangan, perhaps, or rural Western Thailand. Also, some foreigners may have mobility issues that make long journeys difficult. So, for them, it is an attractive option. Just because you have a stick and there is a bear, there is no need to poke it.
  6. I worked in Bangkok. I retired to Pattaya. The reasons were simple. Traffic and people congestion making it take hours to get anywhere particularly if off the mass transit routes but often on the mass transit routes. Noise, everywhere. And the big one, air pollution. It all added up to a sense of claustrophobia. On the plus side, you had every imaginable product and service. more cosmopolitan culture like film festivals. a wider range of foreigner. avoiding the tourist ghetto. Each to their own. I think I have just persuaded myself to leave Pattaya! 🤔
  7. This thread is about obtaining and renewing a 2-year driving licence. There is a separate thread for renewing a 5-year licence. Since my last 2-year Thai licence ran out in 2015, I had to start from scratch. I put together 2 packs of documents which were essentially identical. They contained the following. Passport details page (see note below) Evisa printout Passport entry stamp British driving licence front British driving licence back International driving licence front cover (not wanted) International driving licence details (not wanted) Certificate of Residence from Immigration (1 original, 1 copy) Medical certificate (1 original, 1 copy) Printout of 1 hour training video completion QR code I also took My UK passport My British driving licence My International driving licence (not wanted) Regarding the passport details page, they wanted both pages, not just the details page but also the blank page above with just your photo on it, all on one sheet. Since the reports from Bang Lamung DLT suggested long delays and difficulty in getting appointments for new 2-year licences, I headed to Sri Racha. I have used Sri Racha DLT many times in the past and have found it to be efficient. Warning Sri Racha DLT is 99% Thai. If you are not comfortable outside of the main tourist/foreigner centres, it will not be for you. Similarly if your ability in Thai language consists of speaking loudly in ungrammatical English, I would not suggest going to Sri Racha. If you are confident, carry on. So I headed to Sri Racha around lunch time. I had to wait for a clinic to open to get the medical certificate. However I would suggest going at opening time from listening to recommendations from the staff. The notice tells everybody to go to Information on the ground floor irrespective of whether their business concerns a driving licence or a vehicle registration. However, I will save you the time. If you do not have an appointment and you are after a new 2 year licence, just go upstairs. Upstairs is licences, downstairs is vehicle registrations. Do not worry that you do not have a queue ticket. Go straight to Counter 3. The man there deals with foreigner (and Thai) new registrations. He can speak English if you require. He will check your documents, package, staple and add a form on top, tell you if anything further is required and give you an appointment. I got mine for 7 days hence. No fuss.
  8. Here is my experience. Society must make laws according to my regrets over my mistakes. That is not how it works, Elton. Big decisions require a holistic view and built-in safeguards.
  9. 300 x 2 = 600. I think that is their thinking.
  10. I went down to Immigration this morning and the counter 9 (COR desk) officer was asking all COR driving licence supplicants if they wanted both licences. If the answer was in the affirmative, the price was 600 Baht. I just got one COR. I don't really need a car licence. However I will try an original and a copy for both licences at the Transport Dept. If they won't accept it, I will just get a motorbike licence.
  11. Can I use a colour photocopy of a certificate of residence to obtain a driving licence? Or do I need to go and get another one and fork out another 300 Baht? I obtained one last month to register a vehicle in my name.
  12. Perhaps there is some other phrase but "shoot the rabbit" means "take a pee" in Thai. Maybe the Thai cops are taking the p' in a clever double-pun.
  13. I am very surprised this is the first fatality at Phu Kradeung. You have a huge number of tourists (mainly domestic) on a relatively small plateau atop a flat-topped mountain. The elephants, principally active at night, but also active during the day, have regular trails very close to the camping area. Tourists can wander around at will with rangers gently suggesting they don't.
  14. They need to work out if it is a phoo yai or somebody connected before taking their next move. I recall seeing a car with 4 golden retrievers at Doi Inthanon. From the plates, it had been driven up from Bangkok. There were more dogs than people in the car.
  15. Just to show you (and the villagers) who is in charge. Pay up or no sleep for you!
  16. Transit? Less than 12 hours? Not clearing immigration? Possibly no visa required.
  17. As mentioned many times, the duration of the visa is undoubtedly generous. I don't accept a link between the 500,000 Baht or equivalent required bank balance and "people who want to setup illegal businesses, work illegally, sell drugs, etc." These people would normally have no problem showing 500,000 Baht or equivalent. And that type of person has always had a way of staying in Thailand. The DTV will have no bearing on this. But, in summary, it is definitely easy, maybe too easy, to obtain the DTV and I expect tightening of the conditions at the embassies. In fact, we have already a report from Savannakhet consulate of that. Unexpectedly, any tightening will always start at the embassies and consulates closest to Thailand and then spread outwards.
  18. I would say a tick but... There is no obvious mark in the centre There is no tick!!! Those critters like to hang on for 48 hours filling up with blood. It occurred in bed. All the tick bites I have had in Thailand have been in the forest or overgrown land. So, I would guess at a spider.
  19. We rarely receive an update to these stories. I suspect this is because the local police arrange the outcome rather than it going to court.
  20. @tgw I wish you were right. Please see my lengthy post of Nov 27 (on page 51) in the other DTV thread which lays out how Immigration have repeatedly denied entry to holders of multiple entry visas. So, sadly, there certainly is room for "going around that to charge extra".
  21. One would assume he had a friend to sort things out for him, accommodation, banking, transfer of funds, travel. That really is quite a level of resourcefulness to manage over ten years of overstay.
  22. Prostitution in huge numbers exists in every province in Thailand. The sector for foreigners is dwarfed by the sector for locals. So, I don't know why I am reading, "She will be sent to Pattaya," so often. Far more likely it will be a large aap op nuat in any provincial capital.
