It appears that another one bites the dust.

Oh, man.  I used to love their grilled duck with sauteed onions.  A couple times this year, though, there were hiccups with my order and I wondered what was going on.  Maybe it had to do with the change of ownership.

Hmmm.  I see that https://www.pattayameals.com/ is still up and running.  Had I not just eaten supper, I would call to order, just to see what's up.

  2. Noticed this project in progress this afternoon on the short dog-leg of Thappraya Road from the "Hanuman" statue to the police box.  Probably a decent second choice over burying the cables underground.  They apparently are ripping all the "dead" wires and then securing the remaining ones into a tight bundle (first photo).  There are piles of cables every 20m or so that they had removed (second photo.)

Wonder if anybody lost their CATV or internet access in the process?

Another stretch of tourist statistics. I live in Hua Hin and do not believe that an average of well over eight thousand people per day visit the station even if you count every passenger on every train which passes through.

Please rush me the the truth. I enclose fifty baht to cover postage.

They got confused and made a mistake.  Those were the arrival numbers for the Hua Hin Airport.  :whistling:

  4. Remember the transfer that I submitted last week Thursday (October 17)?  I was notified it "should arrive by October 24th," yet this potential transfer that I'm submitting today, October 22 (three business days later), is saying it also "Should arrive by October 24th."

    Oy, vey.

(I'm guessing that Transferwise doesn't realize October 23 is a bank holiday?)

Thu request means nothing happens until late Monday US time (Tuesday the 21st here) and the 23rd is a holiday here; and being more than $10,000 special reporting requirements must be met so expect all has combined to make it longer than normal.

Why would a Thursday morning request (Wednesday evening US time) not have anything happen until late Monday US time?  Why are both Thursday & Friday in the US not action days?

I got this e-mail from them:

Your money's taking a little longer to get to us.

When you set up your transfer, we estimated that it would take 1 working day for your money to get to us. But this time, it’s taking a little longer to arrive.

Your money will now get to us in 3 working days. As soon as it gets here, we’ll convert it. Then we’ll send it out to your recipient.

... with no explanation *why* it's taking an extra two days.  If the reason is that the amount is >$10k and requires more paperwork, why not share that so I'll know in advance that my next $14k installment will also be delayed.

  6. Thanks, Sheryl.  I've been taking aspirin/paracetamol/caffeine combo tablets since this morning and it does greatly reduce the pain.  I'm back to the condition I was yesterday:  discomfort and not pain.

I forgot about the hospitals having dental departments.  What you say makes sense, and I may go there rather than German Dental.  I still will try to hold on until Monday as I found that it seems that the A-Team doctors often work Monday-Friday.

I had withdrawal issues once before after weeklong use of tramadol for lower back pain, so I'm a little skittish about using it these days.  But, if pain were constant & intense, I would have used it to get through a painful weekend.  It appears that I won't need to do that, thank heavens.

    [edited to add:]

If it is not impacted, and just a normally descending wisdom tooth, is there usually any need for surgery?  I ask because I know the profit-making motive of the hospitals and wonder if they would pressure me to go under the knife even if it weren't necessary.

Based on my past experience with German Dental, they are not of that persuasion.  When I went there for tooth pain the doctor there "prescribed" changing to a sensitive-tooth toothpaste first before anything else.  There was no charge for the visit & the advice worked.  A major dental hospital in Bangkok, however, had pressured me to have two teeth pulled because they had micro-fractures...

  7. Yesterday I noticed a "sensation" in my upper right jaw at the rear.  Not pain, just a strange feeling.

This morning I got up and it seems it might be my undescended wisdom tooth.  It is now a dull pain and has extended up toward my ear.

My dentist of choice, German Dental Clinic in Pattaya, seems to be closed Fri/Sat/Sun according to Google.  When I call, their phone rings once and disconnects.  After I tend to a few things, I plan to actually go there to see if they're open.*

If they are not open until Monday, how likely will it be that I'll be in need of treatment before Monday (I'm posting this on Friday morning)?  If likely, can someone recommend a dental doctor of a similar quality in Pattaya/Jomtien?  If I want to self-medicate with pain meds until Monday, would Tramadol be appropriate?

*PS:  Just found German Dental Clinic's website, and indeed, they are only open Mon-Thu.

Not sure the small payment locations do a direct debit setup. Thx. MS>

Two years ago I set up the auto-debit from my bank account at the office in Big C Xtra on Pattaya Klang, so they (at least used to) do it.

IIRC, they gave me a form which I took to Bangkok Bank (also in Big C Xtra) and returned with the completed form and that was it.

Grab taxi is legal as a smartphone-based taxi booking and dispatching service using regular taxi.

Grab car is illegal because it allows passengers to book a chauffeured ride using private vehicles and drivers without commercial licence

Is Grab Taxi still a thing in Pattaya?  I don't see it when I open the Grab app.  How is it accessed?

Usual follow up is 1 day, 1 week then 1 month.

Thanks.  So, normally, after a month she'd be okay to fly home?

Note the costs. Will be over USD $2000 per eye at most private hospitals hete and then thete is the airfare to consider.

I'd gladly spend that money on her.  She's only going to inherit it anyway.  ????

The reason there is a long wait is that cataract surgery is an elective procedure and no reason to rush. What is the problem with waiting a few months?

Her cataracts are *quite* bad.  She's stubborn and lazy (much like her brother) and has kept putting it off -- for years.  If I don't force her to do it, she probably never will get around to it.  I'm currently working to motivate her to start the process with her HMO.  Flying her over here would be a drastic Plan B.  Wherever she has it done, I want to be there to help her for the first day or two, so she's not alone.

If I had to go through the NHS system I think it would be several months before I would be treated.

It is similar for my sister in the USA with her HMO.  I've considered sponsoring a Thailand trip for her to have it done here.  If we do that, how long should she plan to stay post-op?  What kind of follow-up exams are necessary?
