the only people coming next year are the returning Thai and some farangs who have money and planning to spend a lot of time in thailand.

No short term tourist will come and no expat living in thailand will dare leaving and come back...or perphaps if they leave they may not be able to come back.

the quarantine system will stay in place for a good year.. there is not enough data of the vaccine to make any change in the rule.. besides when all the Thai people are vaccinated then they will change the rule

looking at the number  7million visitors are equivalent to  580,000/month

the government said they can handle 20,000 visitor a month  240,000 per year..

that is about 100 plane per month.. very few airlines are coming to thailand

The real number would be around 5000 people per month and most of them are RETURNING tHAI.

may be they are talking about Thai coming back to thailand not farang or tourists.

My friend came on a flight on Quatar.. they only allow every other seat. There were 30 returning Farangs and 170 returning Thais.. My friend took him a good 2hrs to clear the airport with all that paper work and wait for the ASQ van.. One person per van. There were a lot of soldiers and medical personnel running around the airport.. Nothing is open , he was usher to the hotel from the back door to his room. It costs him at least an additional $2000 beside his ticket. He is planning to stay more than 90 days

The government quarantine  rules is well in place and well implemented. There is no way that the government will change that any time soon next year.

They will see some farang traffic coming to Thailand but no short term tourist will come over, including the 30 days stamp at the airport.

Just who I ask when wanting to know future tourist numbers.

Was it from a bank manager, or one of the motorbike taxi guys waiting outside?

    wishful thinking.

the thai government has established a system atthe airportto conduct the checking of paper , van operation to quarantine, and approved ASQ..

there is no way the government will change these rules. So opening the country with these rules which was never proven effective , it will not attract any visitors.

The selling amenity of thailand to tourists is that it is a cheap place to visit and quick in and out. It was also a place for people working in china not on a consistent basis.

It all  comes to money.. It is no longer cheap to visit thailand and no foreigner would want to locked in for 14 days and pay for it.  If you pay impose quarantine on the tourists then the government should pay for it.

Also for the expat living in thailand.. they can't leave and come back either..Stuck in thailand too..

the days of moving around between countries is over..

    as for the OP

Thailand just is not getting it

no matter what they do nobody is coming here on holiday for at least another year

perhaps if they started treating tourists (including expats) properly instead of contempt they might just convince some people to come here, pre covid they were killing it already - people were getting angry and deciding not to come here or were leaving in masses - they need to take a long hard look at what they are doing going forward and what they have done looking back and correcting the negative sentiment they have created

need to roll back all their stupid rules they have applied for the past 2 years.

like .. they are making difficult to get a retirement visa.. with their 800k in the bank, and insurance. It used to be a letter from the embassy for American.

true the baht has to go down to 33 or even 35 to attract people to come.

with the 14 days quarantine, they killed the 15-30 days trip to thailand.

A damage has already been done by bad mouthing farang.. tourists want to beloved and liked when they visit a country.. they  will spend money so they want to feel wlecome

A rosy picture indeed, however just to pick you up on one point, the reason they were never colonised is because they invariably took the road of appeasement, letting foreign powers come into the country and do what they wanted. a couple of examples; they allowed the british to come into northern thailand in the late 1800s/early1900s and remove/decimate much of the valuable teak forests, and during WWII they basically let japan come into the country and do what they wanted, including committing horrific crimes against the allied prisoners. so, no, thailand has never been colonised but there are two sides to every story.

    They were never colonised,

A GOOD BRAIN WASHED FARANG THAI STYLE.

you are still a farang and they will  treat as dirty farang like the rest of us.

just like the jews going to the gas chamber.. there was no exemption.

Wrong about America... only 2 weeks.  Most accrue days at a time during employment.  Only Europeans (or some?) get 3-4 weeks vacation.

the average workers have 2-3 weeks off ...most the people in the US i know takes 2 weeks holiday to visit thailand..

    Only students take 2 month.

Nobody will come because they will spend the time in quarantine.

retiree will not come either because if they have to leave thailand they will not come back.

the problem is the Baht is too strong.. it makes the ASQ very expensive. May the government can subsidize the ASQ.. dream on HAHA no way will it happened

They are saying the right things, but they will be saying a slightly different thing next week.  People here recommending they open the country without quarantine restrictions make no sense; re-start the local experience of the pandemic for what?  Thailand doesn't need 2-3 week vacationers, and can't afford the impact of welcoming them.

Really marketing these programs to draw people interested in longer stays will require saying the same things two weeks in a row.

It should have been a 60 day stay followed with the option to renew for two additional 60 day stays from the start.  Financially secure retirees can afford to be in Thailand instead of their own country, where they stand a much higher chance of dying.  By that I mean the middle class, not someone saving up for 11 months to visit one of the lowest cost of living destinations on the planet, to then live on the cheap there.

    WISHFULL THINKING.

the government has a quarantine system in place...they are not going to lift it.

just let the people suffer more.. because the government does not care about their own people. always lies and twisting fact.. Sad truth   ...Thai believe their government.

Let us go through the assumption that tourists can take the time off from work and want to visit thailand.

    1.  10-14 days trip-- forget it ..can't make it out of quarantine,

    2.   30 days trip.. you spend half of it in an ASQ hotel. you spend $2000 for quarantine,  $1500 air faire ticket and

another $2000 for the rest of the time.. Bottom line it comes to a 14 days holiday at a cost of $450/day.

           way to expensive.

Not to add that most of the Thai business are shut down.. Nothing to see or do. - no NANA,NO CCOWBOY and NO PATTAYA,  NO BARs.....How can you have fun at 4450/day.

At a $450/day.. I can take the best vacation in Hawaii or Greece.

The reality is here.....No tourists will come to thailand now ,  unless they change the system.

and in fact nobody can leave thailand either unless you have  agood $2,000 extra in your pocket.

Not sure they want tourists per se, but ASQ will bring pretty good money in someone's pocket

Of course good money.. they are not going to drop this quarantine system. It keeps the military personel working at the airport and doing paperwork.

these talks about number of tourism is the excuse or lies the government is telling people that things will be ok.

Thai and farang living in thailand believes the government that things are ok.. HAHA  to that.

The government has no clue on how to create new  job for people.. HISTORICALLY ...military governmentS are only interested in suppressing people and  keep the wealth where the power is. they do not believe in democracy or the share to all.   Under the Thai military ( or military elected ) government young people have no future and less options.

    TRUE

COE is very expensive.. you must pay the ASQ  $1500 plus the ridiculous useless insurance of $500

airfare is just normal....then try to get a covid-19 testing in some part of the USA to be 72hrs before departure.

that is also a challenge. The turn around of the test is 5-7 days.. you can miss your flight if you do not have it.

I feel sorry for is that all these expat farang living in thailand  and wanted no more farang to come in they can't leave either even for a medical condition.. you are stuck there too.

Foreign ministry: 20,000 foreign tourists a month set to come into Thailand

    3pm.jpg

    Picture Channel 8

A senior consular official at the Thai foreign ministry has said that the country is targeting 20,000 tourists a month.

This comes as they have proposed that extensions to 60 day visas will now be 45 days instead of 30 to account for the 14 day quarantine visitors must do.

It will apply to 56 countries including Russia, said Jaturon Chaiyakham.

Jaturon said that PM Prayuth Chan-ocha wants more foreign tourists to come in.

Right now the Covid situation is under control, he claimed, and there are 15,000 rooms for quarantine in Bangkok and Thailand can handle 1,000 visitors a day.

The target is to get 20,000 per month to add to the 45,000 already in the country, 10,000 of whom are "stranded".

In an upbeat assessment Jaturon said that the Certificate of Entry (CoE) is now easier than ever to get and can all be done online.

    The numbers are quite misleading.

1 .Right now airplanes are filled in partial capacity about 200 passenger with s social distancing on the plane.

out of 20,000 tourists...they are looking at 1000 planes per month... equivalent of 250 planes per week.

VERY VERY airlines are flying to Thailand.

    2. quarantine takes actually 16 days. they do not count the first you arrive and you leave the 15th day after  quarantine.. so you are looking at 16 days at the hotel.

    3. then they need a van per passenger to take you to your hotel.. that is a 1000 vans.

there is no infra structure to handle 20,000 tourist ..-First in order to get the COE you must make hotel reservation and pay for it. without it you can't come to Thailand.

My friend came from the USA on this program  At the airport,. it was quite long and extensive checking every where, he was the only person in the van then checking again at the hotel coming from the back door into your room.  After spending $2000 he is locked in his cell room at the ASQ hotel.

The government has a clear systematic system to check well enough at the airport. It is not designed to handle no more that 2 planes per day... A LOT OF CHECKING.

People coming to Thailand are not tourist  and on holiday.

The reality is that the government is not going to change policy soon even with a vaccines. The travel industry is dead in thailand. and the government need to come up with a program to employ the people in the travel industry.

And worse , even though the government has  great incentive programs -- will tourist will come back to thailand ?

Prices are high.  Baht is very strong....too much hassle to get into the country...

the government need to adjust their Baht and prices based on the fact that tourist had to pay $2000 extra to visit thailand. With that added price. Tourists can spend a good 10 days in Hawaii, Portugal, Greece, Mexico, Columbia, Rio...etc Thailand is no longer appeal anymore.

I think it's not unreasonable to require health/travel insurance coverage from all foreign visitors.

Allowing people to self-insure is risky, as only few foreign visitors would be able to cover the cost of a major unforeseen medical emergency, if it came to that. It's not just a question of having the money, but also of being able to access it from abroad (and, worst case scenario, comatose). I don't see why Thailand or any other country would want that risk. The EU's Schengen countries have been asking for medical coverage since a long time.

the main reason is the cost of medical in the Eu are quite high Coming from a 3rd world county like thailand, where the  cost of living is low , you need insurance to go and visit the EU. EU knows that most thai people never buy health insurance   .Eu never asked the American travelling to England for proof of insurance. to visit

Please feel free to leave a comment.

    No need the insurance.

for the tourist, -- they have their own insurance and covers a percentage in thailand.

For the retiree, they are covered by their own country.. anything happened in Thailand, they must pay for it and reimbursed at 80% or they have enough money to pay for their medical.

you do not need to buy insurance to visit  thailand or live in thailand.

The travelling insurance is a rip off. it does not cover well.

Does it kills the virus or protect the individual for getting the virus? will he be a carrier ? and how long does it last.. how many dosage a person needs?  given time ,we will know..it all

and who is going to pay for the 60 millions Thai to be vaccinated?  The farang will have to pay a good  Bht 10,000  per dosage.. it is not going to be cheap.

Infected people to enter.??? Do you believe the government number that thailand has low infection. That is propaganda that the Thai government is

you need to test almost 1/3 of the population to determine that the country has low infection. I have not seen the number on how many people they have tested..Only how many people were infected.. that does not mean anything.
