The reports say there was attempted rape but she fought back and this surprised the suspect and he killed her (suspect's account). He may never got his pants off...but his DNA is probably under victim's fingernails as he's reportedly pretty scratched up. -

Funny last night I had a series of momentary electrical dips in my guesthouse room...just sayin' ???????????? -
Is that a common practice anywhere in the world...the state compensating crime victims ???? The state wasn't responsible for the crime so I think this is a pretty far out suggestion. In many places, a civil action for monetary damages can be brought by the family...not sure if this is the case in Thailand.

I understand these are the things any minister has to say after such a terrible crime, but compared to many places, I don't think Phuket (or Thailand) is particularly dangerous. So I don't know what other steps can be done to increase safety for tourists. The best way to keep everyone safe is to quickly apprehend the culprits and lock them up for good.

This works out well for me as there's a big wad of dollars I've wanted to move into Thailand for some time and now may be the opportune time to do it. -
It's a shame some common sense things can be said because of political correctness but it's very likely this lady would still be alive if she had not strolled out on her own in a relatively remote forested area. Of course she should be able to but in many places/countries this isn't the best advice. Just having a companion, either male or female, provides a lot of protection...how often do you hear of two people out for a stroll being killed vs. one out on their own?
