  1. My wife & I used to enjoy Steak Bao on Beach Rd, near Soi 10.

The service was truly Thai, as in the appetizers came out about 20 minutes after the main course was served (no joke...happened many times).

We took it all on the chin & laughed about it though, as the food was absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere was really nice as well with a fountain burbling in the outdoor area and a fresh sea-breeze blowing in.

Their Moo Lung Baan was a dish to die for, & the (always late) Sai Krog Isaan was always nice.

    This was back in 2001-2004.

There was some tall, blonde Scandinavian manager there who spoke better Thai than English.

They always had some nice, mellow music videos going on their many TV screens & the volume was perfect to create the ambiance we enjoyed (Eagles, Bee-Gee's etc...).

They had cute (but clueless) waitresses & sometimes Beer girls (the promotion type wearing flattering attire) that did their best.

The last time I went there, they apparently still had the same chef. I think this was 2007 or so.

Gone were the Scandinavian guy & ambiance & the cute beer girls. A BUTT-UGLY-FLAMING Katoey in way-too-tight-pants (yes they were flaming pink in color) took our order.

The food was OK, and it came out appetizer first, then main meal next, but all hints at ambiance were GONE.

I had some vacationing friends from Florida over at the time, and had bragged about this "cool" restaurant to them. For some reason they begged off to not join us that night.

    Thank God.

I have nothing against katoeys. To each his/her own, as long I don't have to interact with them, but Steak Bao went from being a really cool place into being a really strange place in no time flat.

For me, it was no big deal. It was a bit of a bummer. My Thai wife is as mellow as they get, but she agreed it was joke to have all transvestite staff in what was formerly a somewhat decent restaurant that will set you back 1500-2500 baht on a dinner for 2.

If my friends from Florida had joined us that night, I'd never have heard the end of it.

  2. Hi Guys,

Greetings from Kuwait. We've been experiencing severe slowdowns here as well. There have been several articles in the local English papers here about a few major underwater internet data lines being cut/damaged in the Mediterranean due to fishing nets, large anchors etc...

The articles go on to state that most of the Mid-East as well as East Asia have been affected.

Subsequent articles mentioned that cut/damaged underwater cables were a common occurence, but it just so happened that 3 major cables had been damaged within a few days of each other, which was rather uncommon, hence the upset in service.

    Monty,

Great advice as far as having backup alternatives in LOS to get online. Also, thanks for answering my question (about Sawang Boriboon) in another post.

    Cheers,

    Jay

  3. I keep reading in all the papers and hear it on TV........"Officers from Pattaya Police Station, together with Sawang Boriboon rescue workers" did this & that etc...

I lived in Pattaya 2001-2004 and never heard of Sawang Boriboon. What/who is it?

Obviously rescue workers, but why did I never hear of them before?

    Just curious.

    Thanks

  4. I just read an article in this week's Pattaya Mail

(see: Finnish motorcyclist killed in head-on collision at http://www.pattayamail.com/current/news.shtml#hd10 -- it's the 10th link down the page).

To summarize, a Brit was driving a small car along minding hie own business, when this Finnish guy comes tearing out of a soi on a motorcycle, going the wrong direction at high speed, and was not wearing his helmet.

The Finnish guy dies, and the Brit is "provisionally" charged with "reckless driving that caused an accident, damage to property, and death".

Why was he charged with anything?

    What does "provisionally charged" mean?

Assuming he has 'decent' insurance, what will his insurance company do?

What will happen to the Brit?

  5. I got suckered on this one about 6 years ago. And to add insult to injury, there was no lavatory/restroom on the bus!!!!

Took about 5 hours to get to Pattaya, and I had no choice but to find some shadows (it was dark by the time I arrived) near some buildings to go relieve myself!

Next I had to flag down a baht bus on Sukhumvit and pay him twice what my bus fare was to take me down to a hotel.

Good info here on this thread. I hope lots of folks read it and take heed.

    Cheers!

    Jay

  6. My thoughts were that maybe he had a mia noi that his wife found out about..........and his wife was in charge of making sure the croc had a full belly prior to the show...........

  7. I'm looking to sub-let a small bit of office space, or possibly rent a small office.

It's for a 6 million baht company, so no worries about it being a shady operation. I just don't require tons of office space, but need an address to satisfy the local regulations.

Please PM me if you can help.
