Whilst this is almost certainly an April Fools Joke, it must be borne in mind that this same law has only within the last month come into play in Cambodia. It is quite conceivable therefore, that for similar reasons to Cambodia, it will at some stage be brought into law here
-
Just to inform you, the average income for the approx. 6 million people living in Bangkok, is approximately 400,000 THB per year. Among the people I know (including my wife, her family and all our friends) I don't know a single one who earns less than 75,000 THB per month. So not all Thais are a burden, just the same way that not all foreigners are a burden.
This is total bull$hit please do tell us what it is your wife and friends do? The only people earning this sort of salary in Thailand are corrupt people, a policeman starts at 6k and an average rank earns around 10k. Teachers earn from 8k to 20k tops, so as I said please do tell us what it is they do for their 75k+
Indeed a total load of <deleted>. There are some 4 million Isaan people working in Bangkok -on building sites and in sweat shops -most trying to earn -with overtime, 6/7000 a month

This might have been the best wind-up of the decade!
Almost certainly is, since your post and my reply will be removed within seconds!

I see many posts suggesting this is an April Fool joke are being immediately deleted!

Although this law has recently been enacted in Cambodia, everyone should realise that today is April Fools Day. Could this be a Thai Visa Wind-Up?

I nearly throw upo when I read that we falang are being a burden to Thailand.... a burden?? They must be pure idiots here thgese politicians....
Oh I am laying here outside the hospital sik to death - OK where is your creditcard??? So Thailand not pay???
Oh, I have no money no food - everyone demands money/creditcard from me... So Thailand is not taking care???
Oh I have no money for paying my rent, everyone demands creditcard/cash!!! Oh! isn´t Thailand take care of me???
So what in hell is Thailand doing for a falang-, absolutely NOTHING. I am expecting nothing when I moved here, and I really got nothing.
So why talking about being a burden to this country... For gods sake I give them money every month - for free!!!!!!!
Glegolo
Isn't that just the way it should be. Let Thailand take care of it's own (except they don't do even that!) Trouble with Europe, and UK especially, is that they take care of everyone better than their own citizens!
-
Many of us "burdens" have pensions from our native country, which upon our demise transfer to our WIVES. If we cannot marry the lady of our choice because we are over 50, they will have no money to live on after we are gone.
Similarly, some countries (UK included) provide bereavement benefits to wives and children after we are gone.
Who will take care of the unmarried mothers and their luk krung children after we are gone?

This looks like a fee increase to me. I have never been charged a same bank ATM fee for cash withdrawls, if within the same province. Now a fee will be charged after you've used the ATM four times in one month?
edit: nevermind, I think I read it wrong. Looks like same bank, same province withdrawls are still free?
Hmm...you're absolutely right...basically, 'don't withdraw money too many times'...essentially 'don't withdraw too much money...just keep depositing so we get to keep it and do what we like with it"...:-) What's the real reason behind this apparent "reduction/drop" in ATM fees ? :-)
Totally correct. If you make more than 4 withdrawals a month within province you will pay. Currently there is no charge.
I wonder whether Internet bank rates will increase also.
Better start using the mattress again!

I thank Toyota of Japan have their hands full at the moment with other issues. Writing a letter to them would be a wast of time. The OP did the only thing outside of talking to the dealership management that he could do. Toyota lost and Ford won.
One never knows the value of complaining. Apart from perhaps improving the local set-up, Toyota might conceivably offer him a substantial discount if he cancels his Ford order.
For the record, I would write if it were me. I have just received a free meal for 2 from a household fast food chain to whom I wrote following a refusal to provide food 2 hours before advertised closing time.

Some people have money because they take care of it. Why buy a bigger vehicle than you need? For show? That is the Thai way!
If the interest rate being paid on car finance is less than the interest you could receive from investing your money it makes sense to have as much finance as possible.'
If Ford are offering zero % finance with 10% down, the interest that you could receive from investing the balance of 90% (rather than paying cash), could significantly reduce the vehicle cost in the long run.
Make your money work for you. Worth thinking about!

I believe Cardholder set out on the day in question, not in Pattaya,(but a small Isaan town) with his lady, who does not sport a tattoo, with a view to ordering a pick-up
He had previously narrowed the choice down to either a Toyota or a Ford, and with the free finance and 10% down payment on offer from Ford, he was seriously considering the Ford, as it would show a substantial net saving, more than outweighing any benefits from buying a Toyota.
He therefore decided to visit the Toyota showroom first with his lady, to see whether they might be able to eke out any additional benefits, extras etc which would sway him towards a Toyota. As we all now know, instead of Toyota trying to woo the couple to buy a Toyota, they totally messed up, by not only requiring a larger down payment than had previously been indicated by a different Toyota showroom, but by advising the fact in a discriminatory way. (It's 30% down because you have a farang boyfriend!)
Having, in my mind, quite correctly told them what they could do with their vehicle, (I wonder how that would be said in Thai!), they went to the Ford showroom, where the previous offer of 10% down and 0% finance still stood. (And they were given a cup of coffee too!) It's often the little things that count!
So at the end of the day, Cardholder placed an order for the Ford, his initial first choice. He has what he wants, his lady is happy, Toyota, having been advised of their cock-up are not, and the Toyota sales lady may be looking for a new job next week.

so lets view the facts,
what is her registered credit rating and how much of a salary does she declare and pay income tax from,
and what has been her monthly turnover in bankaccount each of past 6 months
these questions may have been asked in Thai before she was recommended 30% down. sales staff dont want to waste time on finance deals absolutely not doable
Before asking stupid and irrelevant questions, why not read the thread.
There were NO questions asked, before the clearly untrained salesgirl came up with a 30% down payment.
COWJAI MAI?

Do you have PR or Thai Citezenship.....if not and you are just on a visa/extension then of course you are a higher risk......Remember Thais that buy on credit are residents and cant run away from commitments as easily as foreigners.....think you may find that in the western world, unless you were working/resident etc, you wouldnt stand a chance of getting a car on credit, so Thailand is pretty much friendly.....
<deleted>! It was the girlfriend in whose name the car would be. It was she that was entering or proposing to enter into a finance agreement, and it was a Thai that was going to provide the required guarantee.
Doesn't anyone read threads before jumping on the bandwagon?
The OP -A Farang -was just a by-stander in effect.. If he had not been there the sale would probably have gone through with a 20% down-payment or even less!
So what is this if not DISCRIMINATION AGAINST A THAI!
Of course they could have gone back to another Toyota garage where the OP was warmly welcomed before, but the damage had been done by then.
And it was still very much an open choice between the Ford and Toyota.

Maybe she was Lesbian - she certainly didn't respond to my subtle advances !!!
You've got it all wrong Cardholder.
She was more likely a khatoey, and didn't like the girlfriend!
-
I don't get this thread.
According to the average Thai basher, all Thai's are money grubbing scammers out to screw farangs at every opportunity.
Here we see a Thai car salesman turn down a sale. Who knows, maybe he was a Cambodian salesman, cause we know that we all know that conventional TV wisdom states that one should never stand between a Thai and a bucket of money.
For what it is worth, I think the Toyota finance company was within its rights. This transaction was higher risk for them. Regardless of who the official borrower was, and regardless of a 'no questions asked policy' it was apparent to them that the ultimate source of the funding was a in their eyes a higher risk of flight - leaving them with a devalued asset.
Just because the word 'farang' was used in the conversation all of a sudden cries of 'discrimination' get thrown around. It wasn't. This is the furtherst thing from discrimination.
Think Samran you have rather jumped the gun
The Op had only been in the showroom a few minutes and was just asking basic questions, having been told at another Toyota showroom that a 20% down payment would be required.
There were no finance people there. Finance discussions had not even commenced. But as a reply to a question about a possible 20% down payment, the sales girl responded that in this case 30% would be required purely because the Thai woman had a Farang boyfriend. She may have been a millionaire -may have been the daughter of a VIP, but that was irrelevant. She had a Farang boyfriend - Toyota Nang Rong (or the inexperienced sales girl) wanted 30% and that is BLATANT DISCRIMINATION.
If Surin and Buriram were both happy with 20% why should the tiddleysplot Nang Rong showroom want more?
Possibly the salesgirl did not like Farangs!
-
The only thing that matters, and the only valid point of this thread is that Toyota discriminated against the Op's girlfriend because she had committed the heinous crime of having a Farang boyfriend.
It matters not what make or model of vehicle is subsequently bought, who might lose face, what the neighbours think or anything else.
Time to understand the point and ensure you lot never become victims.
-
Who the <deleted> cares what the village Thais think? they are lucky to have a pushbike -
Such a lot of <deleted> on this forum!
-
Arse is more relevant to this thread than Face!
-
So the Thai lady got her panties in a bunch over the "discrimination"........................ bwahahahahahahahahahaha, im sure she don't give a rat ass, she wanted a new car on the boyfriends coin and as he got all uppity about another 5% on the deposit she is now driving a Ranger instead of a Vigo.........thats some serious loss of face for her.
Have you really followed this thread Spoonman?
The OP started by saying it was HE that was intending to buy a Toyota pick-up.
I understand that having previously looked at all available pick-ups, ascertained prices, freebies and finance terms (down payments and interest rates) Isuzu, Tata amongst others were dismissed. It was a straight choice between Toyota and Ford. It was at this stage he took Miss Cardholder to view both models and garner her thoughts
Even though the vehicle was for Cardholder's use (Miss Cardholder not being a driver) as a couple in a strong relationship it was to be a joint decision, and it would have been necessary for the finance to be in Miss Cardholders name, as a farang is unable to obtain finance under normal circumstances.
With the previously advised finance terms, vehicle cost etc, the Toyota was already going to cost 90,000bt more than the Ford over a 4 year period, but when the Toyota salesperson indicated a 30% down payment the overall cost difference rose to 120.000bt.
Miss Cardholder was insulted and discriminated against by the Toyota salesperson. Her choice of boyfriend is a purely personal matter, and not one which has anything to do with Toyota staff. It is indeed quite fitting that she will now be riding in a Ford vehicle.
I rather suspect that Miss Cardholder would now prefer to never sit in a Toyota vehicle again, and almost certainly suffered no loss of face over Cardholders decision to award the sale to Ford.
And with the extra 120,000bt that Cardholder now has to play with, she is probably mentally planning their next overseas holiday, courtesy of Toyota!
-
Full marks to Toyota HQ for launching an investigation. In my experience, all overseas based Companies respond to complaints - it is the Thai ones that ignore you.
-
You are banging your head against a brick wall Cardholder. Some posters have no idea what the relevant point is here.

Any updates on taxis from Chong Mek border to Pakse. last detailed info was 8 years ago
Ideally I would like to book a taxi to meet me at the border.
Easier to take VIP bus from Ubon bus terminal 9.30am or 3.30 pm Bt 200 to Pakse
No point in taking the bus as I will be driving to Chong Mek from Buriram. I appreciate there are taxis, (old Datsuns??) available, but I was hoping to have everything arranged in advance.

.
Toyota lost out. So did the sales person. Neither will care.
The sales person might care if he/she was for some reason acting unilaterally and following your correspondence with Toyota Bangkok and Japan lose their job.
As an interesting aside I was with a farang in Surin last week at the Toyota showroom looking at a new car. Staff very helpful, indicated a 20% down payment (not in farang name though), gave a full detailed list of monthly payments, and all this without the help of a Thai with us.
Pity I could not have suggested Cardholder went to Surin. In my mind it was clearly the policy of the salesperson or the local Toyota branch.
Perhaps Cardholder would care to tell us which Toyota Branch he had problems with so it can be avoided.

It is fairly clear to me that a good number of posters do not mind being "pissed on" by Thai businesses.
That in itself is despicable, but even more so when a Thai woman is discriminated against because she happens to have a Farang boyfriend.
Those of you who feel there is nothing wrong in being treated differently are so entrenched in your positions that you will never learn.
There remains nothing more to be said.
Law Prohibiting Marriage To Foreigners Over The Age Of 50 Proposed To Thai Cabinet
in Thailand News
Posted
My friend -you need sex lessons.
Whether over 50 or not, married or not, farangs (and not all over 50 are old!) can still impregnate Thai girls who will bear half-caste children. The proposed law (as suggested here today) will not change that!
