  1. my experience November 2009

Very quick and very efficient. In and out in less than 10 minutes. It would have been 5 minutes but the application on their website was an older version (i just emailed them- lets see what happens ). Same day service. Can collect ur visa 4 to 5pm. Free visa. Irish passport holder.

Details and locations are on their website http://www.mfa.go.th/web/1889.php

I have many Thai visas in my passport but this was my first time to be in Taiwan. I didn't deal with any Thai staff and the Taiwanese are so polite, courteous and efficient.

    The requirements:-

    1- One passport photo

2 - Copy of flight to Thailand (I was specifically asked for this. I had erred in completing the application form. I wrote the date of my flight to Malaysian from Bangkok and not the date of my flight from Taipei to BKK)

3 - Copy of flight from Thailand to Malaysia (I presented it with my application so unfortunately don't know if its 100% necessary- other posters on thaivisa say it is)

4- One poster (on thaivisa) said he needed to show means of support. I messaged him asking his nationality but he hasn't replied. I wasn't asked to show means of support. I am a 40year old Irish guy, dressed appropriately for an Asian government visit.

That's it. Any questions, email me. Taipei and its people is a great city and the people genuinely friendly. Only place that i let the vendors take the coins from my hand since I've yet to master the basics of Chinese. I came with a Thai friend and he also stopped asking how much after a few days.

If you are applying for the visa, there is a branch of Bangkok Bank near by (at the main intersection) and it offers the best rate for Thai baht. Many of the banks are currently around 1.17 while Bangkok bank is 1.089

  2. This is Thailand and things are done Thai way

I find that a smile and repeating myself (usually three times) will ensure that the Doctor gives me the prescription.

I understand that the Doctor has a sales quota to fill, and when i make it obvious (politely) that i am willing to sit in his office for the next 30 minutes repeating my polite request for the prescription, the Doctor will hand it over. Its a game. Played politely, you will always win.

I suggest you don't waste time explaining why you want the prescription cos he already knows why.

Just do it politely, and in effect, let him chose whether to give you the prescription now, on in 30 minutes times.

I know its not nice. I prefer non hassles, but this is Thailand.

  3. From TAT

    Dear Sir/Madam,

According to the information by TAT Office in Narathiwat, the fare of the van

from Narathiwat Airport to Narathiwat Town have risen from 50 Baht to 80 Baht.

The van service is available only at the flight's arrival time. The drivers

will be waiting for their passengers right at the airport and passengers just

go outside the terminal to use the service.

    Best regards,

    R. Buramook

  4. Hi

Yes - I am aware of the 'troubles' down south and I am not seeking comments about the security situation.

Has any one recently travelled from Bkk to Narathiwat with Thai Airasia? If so, I'd appreciate some info on the following:-

1 - Public transport from airport to Narathiwat town? Cost of? or the cost of a taxi?

2 - Is the a van or a bus going from Narathiwat direct to Kota Baru or just to the boarder?

3 - Is it easy to get a new visa or are they being strict for those who have been here a 'while'

    Thanks

    Much appreciated

  5. Whether true or not, I think the Golden-rule has to be, never voluntarily accompany the Security Guard or Police to any non-public area.

I had an incident 6 years ago at Siam Discovery where a Thai female walked into me, I responded in Thai 'Not Polite’. She hit me with her umbrella and I kicked her (she looked like and behaved like a 'high-class' prostitute, wear sun-glasses). I made the mistake of going with the Security Guards to the basement but refused to negotiate anything (their English wasn’t good and I pretended not to understand them or to be able to understand Thai).

I ended up at the Police Station behind MBK. The Police negotiated THB4,000 and asked if I agreed. I said “NO, I want THB10,000”; took them a few seconds to realize I was serious. “No, you must pay the Lady”. “If the esan wants money she can go earn it at Nana Plaza”

I didn’t have my passport and when they realized I wasn’t giving the bitc_ anything they decided to hand me over to Immigration. I called my ex and he went to my apartment, retrieved my passport and came to the Police Station. The story so ends.

I think in my case cos I didn’t try to reason with them or try to engage in negotiations or maybe cos I didn’t have my passport with me so they couldn’t hold onto it, or my demeanour, or cos the prostitute was behaving like she was high-so, or …. But I will never accompany Security Guards any where again

  6. $100 so I assume u are looking for something special

I usually stay in 400bath a nite type accommodation but here's my advice

I travel to Sichon every 4 months or so (I have been living in BKK for 3years)

The best placed accommodation is Prasaansuk and I stayed there for THB1,000 (just ask for a discount 2 people) -- Some of the older rooms need a bit of t.l.c and the staff are not 'well' trained -- However, the views are good, the balcony is nice to sit out at night time

I prefer Hing Ngam, the cost is 300bath (1 person), 400 (2 people) --- The beach is rocky, but the views are more interesting and u often see dolphins close to shore. The Manager 'Sue' is a 'treasure'. She has a genuine, honest interest in farang and does her best to make u feel at home. She doesn't chase every bath. Last time she helped a farang organise a full day fishing trip and she made a genuine effort to get the best price for the farang.

    Piti Resort -- Feels deserted

Water quality --- I am not a water person, but i did swim a little and never considered the water suspect

  7. I have flown 6 times Bangkok to Dublin (Ireland), cattle class and am more than happy with the service/price/entertainment system/alcohol etc.. I have been upgraded twice (join on line their rewards programme) cos the plane was overbooked in economy (Dublin to Abu Dhabi). However I really believe that the only test for an airline is how they deal with a valid compliant. I have yet to make a compliant to Ethihad. I no longer fly Thai or Malaysian Airlines cos of their response to valid complaints in the past (Business Class Thai airways and I had to change seats 3 times in the same flight)

The only negative is the stop-over -- U will either enjoy the 90 minutes to stretch ur legs or u wont – Be careful when buying duty free at the departing airport cos of the liquid rules. Because u are transiting via Abu Dhabi, this will affect you.

The airport is appalling, nothing to be recommended, no where to enjoy a 'relaxing' reasonably priced coffee, but free internet (about 10 machines) at a very, very slow speed

  8. Last month I was on Ko Muk -- The snorkelling wasn’t great here but u can rent a boat for the day (baht1,000) and snorkel of Ko Kraden (25 minutes away) -- As u look at ko Kraden from Ko Muk, the best snorkelling is to the left -- three or four walls, massive amount of fishes -- unfortunately the Thai like to feed the fish, which of course is bad, but also good cos there's massive shawls -- When I lived in Australia I knew most of the species by name, but now all I can tell u is there were many different types, coral k and the walls make for a good day of snorkelling and only 25 minute boat ride -- Ko Muk better island to say on
