  1. if ur looking to do it the same day, then cannot be done using 'public transport'.

u will need to rent a motor bike or rent a car/driver from My Little Home guesthouse in Mae Salong (sorry u'll need to google it, but they do have a website)

  2. Hi

Was there (Tha Ton) last week and many times before. U will need to take a combination of songthaews, the first departing 7:20 or 8:20am from Mae Salong. This will take u to Tha Ton, where u will either connect with the Chiang Mai bus or a second songthaew.

The trip needs to be done early morning cos last songthaew is around mid day.

    Enjoy

  3. google super rich -- they have several bureaus in Bangkok and u will get a better rate. Take USD$, bigger denominations and exchange. Yesterday i exchanged Euro at 40.90 v the banks 40.47. From my recollection the banks at the airport will offer even a lower rate.#

  4. All is well until there's an accident. In Australia 'mai bpen rai' isn't an option and the driver can't just run away.

The point isn't the comparison of the taxi fares, but the relative spending powers of the drivers.

In your example, I would think the Thai taxi driver earned 3 times that of his Australian counterpart.

  5. Hi

Anyone notice the new official looking pricing schedules that are been rolled out at the bus stations in Thailand, in conjunction with relocating of the bus stations several km out of town. The bus stations in Mae Sod and Mae Hong Song have been moved out of the cities, around 2km. New, official pricing schedules have been posted on the walls of the new bus stations, with a starting fare of THB60. This seems 'high' when compared to Bangkok and a 2km ride in an aircon taxi is THB40.

I speak reasonable Thai (for taxis, tuktuk etc...) and wasn’t able to get a motor cycle taxi for the usual THB20 or THB30. The main man at MHS suggested I compare the price to my home country, but had difficulties when I suggested a comparison to BKK was probably more appropriate.

Is it happening at ur local bus station too?

  6. Hi

Just had my teeth cleaned at Dentist 51 (google it.

No complaints wrt service and reasonable 599+50. In addition very close to the BTS.

Not surprisingly their 'abilities' exceeded those of my home country 'Ireland'. Last month I had my annual check-up and was advised, in Ireland, that I had one filing that needed replacement within the next 2 years. Dentist 51 were able to diagnose 6 problems with my teeth. Tit

Recommend the cleaning but perhaps careful with their check-up.

  7. Avoiding comments on corruption etc... (cause its boring)...

My observations on the new link are:-

The whole feel of the station/design and trains is cheap.

Yesterday wasn’t a hot day. I boarded at Phayathai and the link to the ARL (Airport Rail Link) is hassle free but I wasn’t carrying luggage. The Phayathai station is effectively enclosed and I would assume like a sauna on a hot day.

The platform isn’t wide enough (serious safety issue) to allow for safe disembarking and embarking (effectively at the same time).

A/C doesn’t work properly and I, along with my companions felt a little nauseated with the poor quality of the air on board the train.

The security guards don’t match the professionalism of MRT and BTS (judged on Thai standards).

The depths of the seats are roughly half that of the BTS, so your legs are left dangling. I’m a white guy but am of slim built. My Thai friends also notice that the seats were shallow.

When you arrive at the airport you need to use one of a limited number of lifts, so i would anticipate delays during the airports busy periods.

So in summary, if I am meeting friends/family at the airport, I will use the ARL, but if I have luggage I’ll stick to my taxi.

  8. good post

    totally agree

I wholeheartedly agree. None of us foreigners who spend our money and live here should have any opinion at all on anything to do with Thailand and should do an Oliver Twist and just hold out our bowls for as much sh*t, harassment and shakedowns as the Thais want to give us. None of us should complain, none of us should take any interest in human rights abuses, corruption or other unsavory practices.

We should all just forget everything we've ever thought about morals, integrity, fairness or honesty the moment we get off the plane and exist in out own little cocoons oblivious to anything that is going on around us - then this will be a very empty forum left just to people asking the price of a motorbike tire or where to buy Marmite

  9. I think most posters have kinda missed the main point. One assumes that this wasn't a 'surprise' exam, and that the teachers had time to prepare.

It says a lot about culture when one cant be bothered to prepare for the exam.

I'd love to see my own government requiring teachers to sit a similar exam every five years or so.

  10. Does anyone know if any night time buses go to Sangklahburi? My plane lands around 11:10 pm, and I would prefer not to stay in a hotel.

No night buses. Direct from mor chit in an older bus (no toilet) with old a/c three times a day and one VIP bus (equally old).

If I recall correctly the first bus is circa 7 or 8am. They changed the schedule a fee months ago.

Ur gonna have to spend the night in bkk.

Are u arriving by plane? Worth checking out the bus station near to the airport. Maybe u can get kanchanaburi and then early bus to Sangkhlaburi

  11. I think your neighbours assume that your wife is another young poor, poorly educated esan that's married a rich sugar daddy.

You mention buying land etc....  Maybe if your neighbours knew ur wife's educational back ground and knew that she was financially independent, maybe they'd stop assuming she was a Pattaya girl.

  12. Duty Paid Limits on Wine

    Hi

I know that the duty free limit is 1 litre, if purchased duty free, usually at the airport, on the way to Thailand.

But does anyone know the limit on bringing wine into Thailand, if purchased at a normal shop, example local supermarket.

Maybe I'm getting confused with EU regulations and Thailand doesn't differentiate between Duty Free and non Duty Free purchases.

    Thanks.
