India revokes licences of 14 'fake pilots'
'Fake' pilots
India action over 'fake' pilots
The licences of 14 pilots have been revoked by India's aviation authorities as they were allegedly proved to be flying with fake documents.
A police probe found a flying club had issued "fake records" of their training sessions, India's civil aviation chief, Bharat Bhushan, told the BBC .
Earlier this month the licences of seven pilots were cancelled because of fake certificates.
The licences of 4,000 pilots are being checked for irregularities.
Mr Bhushan said that the police had discovered that a flying club in the northern state of Rajasthan had issued "fake records" of training sessions for 14 pilots.
"Based on the police complaints, we have revoked the licences of 14 commercial pilots," he said.
There have been a series of scandals involving Indian airline pilots recently - even though the country has a relatively good safety record.
Earlier this month authorities said that they were taking action against 57 pilots who had reported for duty drunk over the past two years.
Over the same period there have also been reports of pilots falling asleep while flying and pilots fighting with air crew.
The BBC's Soutik Biswas in Delhi says the massive growth in India's aviation sector over recent years has presented serious regulatory challenges to the authorities.
India now has the world's fourth largest number of domestic fliers after the US, China and Japan.
In China, 200 pilots were found with fake papers in 2008, according to the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation.

Big thanks for the posting Lannatyne
Last time January 2009 -- If u can speak Thai and work on the basis that locals use this as a commuter service then THB50 seems reasonable. Last time (January 2009) I joined a boat, already chartered with 5 other Farang who didn't speak Thai and had agreed to a round trip 250 each, round trip --
Which province is stated on ur wife's id card? I ask cos sometimes the rule is Thai whose id card is from a neighbouring province can ...... other regulations apply for those who come from a non bordering province
-
thanks
do u know the cost of the boat -- used to be 50baht each way and the songthaew 15baht
-
thanks for the reply but i prefer to do it the 'cheap way' for many reasons (money not being one of them), least amongst them being i will spend half a day exploring Kawtung and on arrival back at Thai Immigration disembarking with 40 other farang tends to slow down the process. I've done the trip twice (last time 3 years ago) and its 'fun' to mingle with the locals

no one on TV has done this trip recently?
-
Hi
Anyone done recently - I last did 3 years ago - I just looking for updates wrt:-
1 - Cost of songthaew to Saphan Bpla
2 - Immigration still on the pier at Saphan Bpla
3 - Cost of the boat (previously THB50 each way)
4 - Cost of entry to Myanmar (Irish passport)
5 - Requirements at Myanmar side - copy of passport (which pages?)- Photos?
And anyone know the requirements for a Thai National?

Hi
Anyone know if the Boarder is opened OR have a number for Thai Immigration Office at the Boarder.
Thanks

Just as u get to the boarder veer left and then first left going thou a day market -- Approx after 700 metres turn right (after u pass a sad looking neglected collection of huts on a hill side) and continue str8 until u hit the river and a police box (200metres), veer left uphill and choose the last 'resort' on the road (150metres) -- About 10 minute walk from the boarder -- The 'resort' has perfect views but the owner has long ago given any pretence of service, but if u bargain u ought to get a place 150-400 depending on the comfort level
Night life -- If Monkey Mia is open (u passed it on the way to the 'resort', nice place to meet people -- Other than that a few very loso girly bars which is not my scene

there's a difference between an 'incident' and an 'accident'
if it's a solo driver 'high' on red bull and crashes after 11 hours of driving = an incident
if it's a well maintained vehicle, well trained driver = probably an accident
however,it been America (as opposed to Europe), probably find that the driver has the same employment rights/contract as a Thai worker

almost a whole OP with out a comment wrt "Enjoy your trip and not try to be a penny pincher. Not worth the hastle over a few baht"
some people just can't help themselves. The OP was asking if it was a reasonable price. I often travel via ThaiAirAsia and the fixed price is THB200 to the centre. If your hotel is not in the centre then THB300 is reasonable.

I've lived in BKK for three years and occasionally read the BKK Post. Never really enjoyed the Nation cos of the type face. The regular Nation postings on TV, really show how poor the level of journalism is, in Thailand. Another poor article. We're all entitled to our opinions, but the No1 factors has to be internal politics, red shirts, yellow shirts and the south and the passing of the old guard.

Its not often that an icon lives up to its 'reputatuin'. The first time I visited an Ikea Store was in Singapore and I must admit I was impressed with the value and design of their products.

If you're coming by BTS, better option is Saphan Khwai BTS station (the one before Morchit) -- The speedier buses are 509 or 157 followed by 3, 28 and 77.

#2: How to go from Hat Yai airport to the Malaysia border? Any bus? Or do I need to take a taxi? Price I should expect to pay?
Thai airways has a minivan service which runs as and when planes arrive. If you contact Thai airways at Had Yai they will give the details. Cost circa THB80 and will leave u in town. They may drop u at the bus station. Local non a/c bus to boarder every 30mins, circa THB40 or take a mini van.
#4: Same question than #2 for the Malaysia border to Hat Yai city?
When u arrive back to Thai soil, cross over the road and wait at the obvious bus shelter or where u see Thai people waiting -- Just hail a mini van or if u want to travel with the locals, the bus as it passes

4,000 deaths, 4 years
A white foreigner, beheaded and xxxxxx would make the front pages of many International papers.
Ur taking a chance and the question is "Is it worth it"?
I was there, 10 years ago, and the people and scenery are well worth it, but now -- umm, I dont think I would go
Also ur insurance and helath/travel policies maybe be void if u enter the three provinces cos of the situation.

Another palace that i will visit this week
Maybe some are un aware of it's existence
Varadis Palace, tucked away from the busy Lan Luang Road in old Bangkok, was the former palace of Prince Damrong Rachanupab who has played a significant role in the development of modern Thailand.
Prince Damrong Rachanupab (1862 – 1943) was the son of King Mongkut (King Rama IV) and the younger half-brother of King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V).
Admission to the museum is by appointment only and in groups on 20 or more. But there's a way around this.
Call 02-282-9110 or 02-281-7577 or drop in at the library on working days.
Check when is the next group visit and request to join that group. Admission is free. The guided tour is in Thai.

"I know the pc thing is to wai him and move"
U speak Thai, and u think its Thai way to wai a taxi driver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If there's any need for a wai, its from the taxi driver to you
-
I have lived in BKK for 5 years and my Thai is limited, but sufficient to converse with a taxi driver. My experience is +99% of taxi drivers will go a 'reasonable' direction, so, perhaps its ur perception that he is going the long way around. Just seems strange that u can read and write Thai and are experience problems.

I agree with Kandahar 'And what leads you to believe that they haven't already matched or exceeded "our" achievements?'
but maybe u could back this up with a few concrete examples -- should be easy, right .... inventions etc...
