Not really. Some things are more expensive, especially in Taipei. Other things are cheaper. It depends a lot on your spending pattern which one is more expensive. Biggest cost difference: you don't have to pay for girls (but you won't find a beauty 25 or 30 years younger than you) I am not talking about prostitutes, but regular girls (you probably couldn't pay for Taiwan prostitutes anyway). Thai girls know farang are rich. Taiwan girls know foreigners have no money.

Cooking classes fit 5 years? Medical treatment for 5 years? The thing that is drawing attention on this forum is the DTV for digital nomads, because lots of whoremongers people interested in Thai culture under 50y.o. could see this as their door into Thailand

When they introduced the LTR, the Thai government thought exactly like this.

Taken literally, the DTV enables you to live here for 5 1/2 years, with border runs every 180 days. But you must be a digital nomad. The government has already laid out in the LTR whom it considers a digital nomad: someone working remotely for a big corporation, with an above-average salary. Not a backpacker with a laptop, not someone over 60. Not someone self-employed (= unemployed in Thai culture). At this time, this would basically mean the Russian refugees. (If the European war expands further or if China behaves even more aggressive towards Taiwan, you could add Poles, Germans and Taiwanese.) These people do have money that Thailand wants. To give them some security would be a smart move.

Nobody knows, what is correct, because the government didn't give detailed information. Maybe the government themselves are not yet sure. Many people, e.g. @Maestro, see it your way. Others, like myself or @HauptmannUK, find it hard to believe that all of a sudden billions of people would have the possiblity to reside in Thailand ( @humbug pointed out that such a visa would make all other visas pointless). I find 2 arguments from this thread plausible: 1. The details of the visa, who qualifies etc., will be so complicated that the visa will be useless 2. They might restrict the time one can spend in Thailand to 180 days per 1-year-period. But this is all speculation. Nobody knows.

Posters who think a diginom will be tax-free are dreaming. The dream may come true. But, as of now, if you stay in Thailand less than 180 days (in a calendar year) you are not a tax resident, and thus have to pay income tax "only" on your "Thailand sourced" income. It does not matter, whether this Thailand sourced income has been paid into a Thai bank account or a foreign bank account. It also doesn't matter if this income comes from abroad or not. It also doesn't matter whether all your customers are abroad. It does matter that you work in Thailand, and that is what a digital nomad does. Until now, he may be flying under the radar and evading Thai taxes. As a holder of a DTV (which explicitly says he is "working in Thailand") he is not under the radar any more. Because I find it hard to believe that all of a sudden, 50% of the world's population are entitled to reside in Thailand. That would really be a big change of mind. Very difficult to prove. And anyway, what is a "legitimate digital nomad"? I know quite a few who are nothing else than backpackers with a laptop. I agree with you that some way of filtering out "legitimate digital nomads " (whatever that may be) would reduce that 50% of the world population to a manageable number. It would then be the visa to legalize the Russians here. Maybe that's the whole point.

The place is boring if you only have a few days. The people are by far the best I have met in Asia (or anywhere else). If you are deaf and dumb, and illiterate (in Chinese, of course), you could confuse Tapei with just another Chinese city. If only a few days, visit Taroko gorge near Hualien (wait until the damage from the earthquake has been cleaned up). Not many places in the world go from sea level straight up to 4000m, certainly nowhere near London. If interested in old stuff, visit the Palace Museum in Taipei. When the nationalists fled to Taiwan they carried all Chinese pieces of art from the mainland with them, and what was left in China was destroyed in the Cultural Revolution. So the Palace Museum is the place to go for Chinese art.

It would make sense, but I have only read - that it's 180 days multiple entry (on the website of a Thai embassy), which would mean everybody who owns a laptop could live here (which is the stated aim of the visa) for 5 1/2 years with visa runs every 180 days. - or that you can only stay 180 days once, extendable to 360 days, within 5 years. Where do you get the "per year" from?

Your list of 93 visa free countries contains 43 entries, give or take (I have never been good with numbers). Oh, and I am pretty sure Taiwan is visa free now and will remain so. So, it's always good to bring a handful of devices to your branch, and don't come an hour before closing time, finding a device that works may take some time.
