  1. Problem comes in when Thailand is unable to discriminate between incoming deposits, so simply taxes everything leaving the poor sucker to apply for a Thai tax refund or in the case of the US, foreign tax credit. The expat scraping by on sociable security or small pension of $2000-3000 per month will be filing a US tax return, but paying little or no tax. Unsure what Thai tax authority will require in terms of proof of tax paid, if no tax was paid. Expat won't have much luck in the US, as he likely won't have enough tax incurred to apply the foreign tax credit.
  2. Gosh, another government report about the covids! This must be serious! 5 intel agencies say most likely zoonotic origin, two say can't make a determination, and two say the lab leak was the most likely origin. Those last two are the most concerning, "the Department of Energy and FBI’s assessment was that a laboratory-associated incident was more likely the cause." But how, ummmm............confident........are they? That's odd, nothing in the article. What does Mr. Googles have to say? Oh, here it is! Low confidence? Why didn't the linked article tell us that? Oh, I see.
  3. That recent documentary about Abraham Lincoln is grounded in true events. Abe was the president. It's definitely rooted in reality. He lived in Washington, DC. The part about slaying vampires was just poetic license. Still............it was "based on" established facts.
  4. Of course I sold everything. Why keep stuff in the USA if I don't plan to return? There's nothing Asia can't provide that the USA has in abundance, except for pods of blue-haired land whales.
  5. From the full story.... A bowel of fruit? Wai not!
  6. Okay, I understand. China is assimilating Hong Kong into the mainland. There is still no requirement to file tax returns claiming outside income. China has not joined the exclusive global taxation club.
  7. Hong Kong is China, so I wouldn't consider that global income. Were you required to declare and pay tax on income from outside China?
  8. I posted before, we'll just have to wait and see. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't prepare for the worst case. I'm gonna make a plan for when I get punched in the face. Will be extending permission to stay this week, will get a single re-entry. Will spend the next two months getting things in order, doing some research. Think I'll spend a couple months in Cambodia, rent a studio in Siem Reap, explore the temples, see what it's like longer term in one location. I'll have a single re-entry. Either come back to stay, or come back to leave.
  9. When did that start? I lived there for almost 15 years, returned last year. Never asked about income outside of China when I went to district revenue office for tax documents needed to send salary out via SWIFT,
  10. Lucky the Thai government has no access to or oversight of Thai banks, or they'd be able to enforce a 15% tax withholding charge on all incoming Wise transactions.
  11. They even tax military pay overseas, with the exception of additional combat pay.
  12. How is the victim to 'prove' that a savings account has been taxed? And can we expect that we must pay the tax, and only later will be permitted to submit a complicated application for a refund?
  13. We're in the right place. The supermarkets carry bags of frozen bugs. I'll eat 'em, and be happy!
  14. Okay, fine. There is no minimum time spent in Thailand required to maintain a "retirement" visa extension. I can keep my 800K in the bank, spend 181 days in other countries, and send my Wise transfers to a Cambodian bank account. Can carry my Thai spending money in my wallet on frequent visits. No, wait........why AM I going to all this trouble?
  15. This is not just earned income or capital gains. It seems to mean any funds that "in come" to Thailand will be considered income and taxed, including from personal savings. And this would confirm it. Wise transfers from a personal savings accounts outside Thailand would then be considered taxable income. We'll see, but I suspect requiring expats to file Thai tax refund forms every year to maybe get back some of the 15% on their savings they brought in over the year may result in a good number moving elsewhere. Expats living on their savings and interest, not earning enough to pay tax in their home countries, may not find the relevant tax treaties to be relevant.
  16. Chiang Mai municipal stadium.
  17. Bangkok Bank can do a "balance forward" in your passbook with no transaction required. Some other banks do required a deposit or withdrawal. Your interest rate depends on the investment. High yield bond ETF's pay around 7%, buy/write ETF's around 10-12% with monthly payout. US govt I-series savings bonds were paying 9% earlier this year, now set at about 4.5%.
  18. My two-year expired while outside Thailand, unable to return due to the covids. Upon return about a year ago, license was over 1-year expired. Chatuchak DLT allowed renewal upon taking the written test, was issued 5-year license.
  19. Yes. Easy process. All the requirements are posted. They follow the rules.
  20. Find another agent......or better yet, do it yourself. The embassy doesn't issue the work visa, they have a separate service center that handles that. Take the MRT to Phetchaburi Station, or the canal boat to Asoke Pier. https://www.visaforchina.cn/BKK2_EN/
  21. Probably not going to fly. You'll have to carefully maintain the 800K/400K immigration required balance in your regular passbook savings account. Go 1 baht under for an hour and you're going to have to start all over with a new visa (or use agent). And then you've got your other 800K(?) tied up in a 2.75% 2-year fixed account, when that money could be overseas earning 10%. Why?
