  1. Since sometime in June, but only in effect for a week or so, Uber now have "Uber Flash", their answer to "Just Grab", and in the original June announcement they say those who want Uber Black can still get it. But the app shows only Uber Flash, Uber X or Uber Moto are available. Today's Uber Flash was a Toyota Altis Taxi that couldn't find my Central Chidlom pick up point, so after more than 15 minutes waiting on their predicted 2-6 minutes (varied between the two on a number of occasions), I cancelled, and received my THB45 penalty, refunded as a credit.

Grab seem to have seized the business opportunity with their variety of offers. Usually quite reliable, (as in ability to find my pick up point), but the quality of car (in the Grab Car Plus category) is nothing like Uber Black.

I would venture to say that Uber appears to have lost the market here in Bangkok, sadly.

Easy solution to keeping cabbies honest - have phone camera ready and if there is any resistance  to dropping the meter snap a picture of their license/photo on the dash. That's exactly what it's there for. Drivers are well aware of the laws and don't want a hassle with police. This works for me 100% of the time.

And then what do you do with these photos?

Do you report to DLT? Does it work?

My 2 condo buildings are set up this way.

Mine too. Just been having all the doors re-checked, that they do close and the latch "locks" the door from the outside, (once inside the stairwell). I understand the OP's concern, but this system is legal in Thailand, and if it implemented correctly, (viz all doors lock closed), then the fire exit via the stairwell is safe from fire by virtue of the 2 hour metal doors. That is how the system is designed. Our stairwell is used by security on their daily checks of each floor, and by maids on their daily cleaning. any abuse of this system by them, (such as jamming open the door with paper in the lock), nullifies the whole fire prevention system (all 37 stories), of the building.

  4. Your link gives me:

'This text is replaced by the Flash movie."

    and this one is blank.

I have just had a call from True and I tested using  Ookla and download was 32 Mbps for Bangkok. 19 Mpbs for Dallas, TX. So there's an improvement to last night's tests, but I think maybe night time is worse because of more usage.
  5. Yes, I have spoken to True several times and await their response, which is not very forthcoming. I understand international downloads will not be as fast as Bangkok ones, but when Bangkok only produces 18-20 Mbps instead of the 30 Mbps I'm supposed to get, I think there's a problem.

  6. I subscribe to True Online with a 30 Mbps. With local sites using testmy.net I get about 18-20 Mbps. With international sites (e.g. UK) for Android streaming it can vary enormously, depending on the time of day. As I generally watch TV at night, the last couple of nights it has only been 1.5-2 Mbps, which obviously negatively impacts on the stream.

Do others suffer from the same low speeds and poor streaming with True? Any other better high speed providers for streaming that can be recommended?

  7. OK, thanks guys. I think I'll start with a new Android box and see how it goes. Was checking out Smart TVs this afternoon, and the Sony 40" looks easy enough to use with the Logitex keyboard, and is about THB25k.

Otherwise you can buy a Android box, but then you don't need a smart tv, since the box makes your regular tv smart enough.

Would it be correct to say that an Android box makes your TV into an internet TV (Smart TV). In other words, with an Android box can you view any URL on the TV, and download as required?

Also can a supplied Android box previously supplied by one of the recently decapitated IPTV companies be used as a generic Android box, or do I have to buy a new generic one to do as above in the first paragraph.

Sorry, you're probably eye-rolling at the simplicity/stupidity of the questions, but I simply don't know the answers.

There are generic Android smart tv's. Sony - Philips,TCL and Sharp make them.

You can install Android apps including Kodi on them, if your processor speed and RAM allow it.

    Ok got it. Tkx.

  10. OK, please excuse the naivety of the question for those of you who are more technically minded, but here goes:

If one has a Smart TV, (by which I mean a TV connected to the internet), can one watch things on it such as BBC iPlayer or equivalent?

If one doesn't have a Smart TV, does one have to have an Android box to do the above? If so, is there such a thing as a generic Android box?

    Thanks.

  11. OK, thanks. Previously I have put the transferred date (from old to new passport) and issued at Immigration BKK, as opposed to the original non-b issued in Glasgow in 1999, and they seemed to be OK with that.

also I had previously put the photo size of one that fits within the drawn box.

But I will amend as you suggest on both counts.

  12. I note the new TM.8 Re-Entry Form has a new section...

"My Previous visa for Thailand is of the category of..."

My first visa was a Non-Immigrant "B" visa 10 years ago, since which time I have used "Extension of Stay" based on Retirement.

Am I correct to cross the "Non-Immigrant" box, and if so, do I put in the Non-Immigrant visa issued 10 years ago, or do I provide the last "extension of stay" details?

Additionally, the Photograph box states 4 x 6 cm, which far exceeds the box drawn on the form, (which is 3.3 cm x 4.3 cm). I had 4 x 6 cm photos made, which I will use unless anyone thinks better of that.

To prevent a WannaCry / WannaCryptor infection on windows 7 you need to disable something called SMB, I've included instructions to disable SMBv1, SMBv2 and SMBv3 on Windows 7 in this post. Note - there are different commands for other versions of windows - see the link at the end.

Doing the following on a Windows 7 installation will stop it :

Open a command prompt by clicking the 'round start menu button' then enter 'cmd' in the box at the bottom and press enter.

Copy and paste the following 4 separate lines one by one into the black command prompt window that pops up.

    sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb20/nsi
    sc.exe config mrxsmb10 start= disabled
    sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi
    sc.exe config mrxsmb20 start= disabled

After each line there will be a confirmation that it worked on the screen.

you must reboot the computer for this to become live and then you won't become infected with this particular variant of malware.

The above information comes from : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2696547/how-to-enable-and-disable-smbv1,-smbv2,-and-smbv3-in-windows-vista,-windows-server-2008,-windows-7,-windows-server-2008-r2,-windows-8,-and-windows-server-2012

Also note that if you're on a corporate network that uses SMB for whatever reason then it might not be such a great idea to do this, speak to the systems administrator but for home users it's just fine.

There are new variants of this malware circulating right now and they don't have the 'killswitch' in them.

Thanks. I will try this. I'm not clear from the link whether this should be a temporary disable or permanent.

Just need to clear up the dross from the bottom half of the channel listing and we'll be good to go.

Sent from my Cray II supercomputer

Agree - about removal of the dross. More 4 and NHK still missing from Standard UK Package. Maybe the "dross" is compensatory for a short time for the day+ when the service was down. Still, moving in the right direction.

I've been using it for weeks and the quality is very good,.....as good as the BBC iplayer . And it never buffers ,not even on my TOT 10 MB connections that is rarely more that 5-6MB  . I suggest you try it

As I said, I downloaded and when I try to double click to play a programme, it shows the picture very briefly, and then I only get audio. What am I doing wrong?!
