Bangkok Governor Joins in and Kicks off Songkran at Khaosan Road
nigelforbes replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
He didn't say it was extra revenue, that was just your interpretation of what you thought he said. The economy is being driven currently by Consumer Spending, holidays such as Songkran mean that consumers spend money, ergo, they are pumping money into the economy. -
UK to be one of worst performing economies this year, predicts IMF
nigelforbes replied to onthedarkside's topic in World News
Oops, I have to backtrack on what I said, GBP has strengthened The pound (GBPUSD=X) has rallied significantly over the last several days, climbing to a 10-month high against the US dollar. “Cable (GBP/USD) is up over 3.6% year-to-date and is up over 12% in 6 months since the fiscal fiasco around the mini-budget last September which heavily punished the British currency. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/pound-stays-strong-against-dollar-as-rally-continues-090837965.html -
Too funny. I'm a Brit., I don't have any political hero's West of Ireland! I've done well out of investment funds for the past couple of decades, it's important to chose carefully and for me, that means a good geographical spread with less than 40% in US equities. For that reason, who ever is in office over there is of little consequence or interest to me, or my investments.

If you had been invested in gold since 2006 you would indeed have done well, the question is, were you! But the point you try to make about investing in the stock market is untrue. Typically, a good quality equity investment fund will double in value every five years, that means equity fund returns could easily have tripled over the same time frame..

You don't say if you are calling the Pension Service or the International Service, the latter is usually easily accessible but is a different number. -
UK to be one of worst performing economies this year, predicts IMF
nigelforbes replied to onthedarkside's topic in World News
Oh please! I want to know who said what etc (if that's OK with you), anyone can come on here and say this and that or god forbid, even make things up! Show me the proof, tell me who the source is so I can decide for myself if the source is credible or not. I know the IMF is a credible source because I have read their material extensively over the years. But some poster saying something or other is not, it just doesn't resonate in the same way. Don't bother me again. -

How to get tax id number with non o?
nigelforbes replied to Topah's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
They are unlikely to issue a Tax ID solely for that reason, the person must also prove tax residency in Thailand which means holding a long stay visa and proof that they spend at least 183 days here each year. -
UK to be one of worst performing economies this year, predicts IMF
nigelforbes replied to onthedarkside's topic in World News
You may be right, I don't know, almost certainly there was a lot of exaggeration at the time but mostly, nobody really knew for certain what would happen. Estimating and forecasting is not an exact science so probably, some of the original ideas were wide of the mark. I think however that the key point is to assess whether the financial district is better or worse off today than it was pre referendum, Iit seems today it may be worse off. Where it might be in say five or ten years time is another story. -

Yes, sort of, but today the picture still is not good. "Since Brexit, they find London’s position has been marginally eroded in only some of the business lines examined. The recently published 2022 BIS Triennial Survey, the first since the United Kingdom’s formal departure from the EU, shows that London has remained the dominant centre for over-the-counter (OTC) trading of FX and euro IRD, but it has lost share in euro and dollar IRD, in the latter case owing to Libor’s end rather than Brexit. In international banking, London has retained its top position, but its role as a banking hub for the euro area has waned. In the underwriting of euro international bonds, London firms have until recently stood their ground, but recent data raise questions". https://www.bu.edu/gdp/2022/12/16/london-as-a-financial-center-since-brexit-evidence-from-the-2022-bis-triennial-survey/#:~:text=The Brexit vote in 2016,financial services throughout the EU. -

As said previously, the UK FTSE is dependent on earnings from companies in the US and Europe, its performance does not reflect UK economic performance in any way (But no stock market ever does) " Around 82% of the FTSE 100 revenues are from overseas markets, while, though still sizeable, this figure drops to nearly 57% for the FTSE 250". https://www.ftserussell.com/blogs/overseas-revenues-boon-ftse-100-performance -
A number of risks you should think about: Currency exchange rate risk over the longer term. Taxation and reporting of income to home government. Management fees vs void periods risk. Durability and sustainability vs quality of construction Government legislation risk. Controlling maintenance and replacement costs.

UK to be one of worst performing economies this year, predicts IMF
nigelforbes replied to onthedarkside's topic in World News
As the previous poster said, the FTSE comprises mostly overseas companies whose earnings are in other currencies (USD, EURO) that are then converted back to Sterling. The rise in the FTSE is not really representative of the state of the UK economy but there again, no stock market in any country is because stock values and indices are forward looking. -

Yes you're right, most of the pickup in Sterling value results from USD weakening. https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=USD&view=1M https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/index/dxy -

Thai Inflation Rate Ranks 2nd Lowest in ASEAN
nigelforbes replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Not exactly correct. The Fuel Subsidy Fund is organized and operated by the government but it is designed to be self sustaining. When the price of oil on the open market is low, the retail price of fuel is increased so consumers pay more than they ordinarily would have and the extra payment replenishes the fund. When oil prices are high, the fund subsidizes retail prices. During covid, the fund was mostly operating in subsidy mode which means it incurred large debts and loans to the fund had to be arranged, ultimately those loans will be repaid by the consumer in the form of higher prices. It's a levelling exercise as much as anything. -

That's because the government Fuel Subsidy Fund absorbs the fluctuations in the oil price. -

No problem. I got mine in Chiang Mai. I rate the Thai Revenue as the easiest and most professional of all the government agencies, they're super helpful, no hassles, give accurate info plus they're friendly. -
How to get tax id number with non o?
nigelforbes replied to Topah's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Thai tax year is the calendar year, it ends 31 December. All you really need is your passport showing that you've spent more than 183 days per year in Thailand and that you have a non-O. Simply say you want a tax ID, that is really all you need to do. If someone asks why then simply say you intend to rent out a property and you want to pay tax on the income or you want to reclaim tax paid on bank interest, you could even tell them the truth and say you need it for your home country! -
Remember that line for next time....."I'm just popping out to Home Pro dear, won't be long".
