One of the problems in CM is that CMU is the third best rated medical training facility in the country, many graduates already live here and stay on to practise after they graduate. Becoming an associate professor or similar at CMU seems to be what everyone aspires to and there seems to be loads of them, that and consulting hours at a private hospital or three, in addition to hours at the district hospital which is where the real work gets done. All those things guarantee a decent wage. But there is very little external influence and there is no higher level to aspire to locally, if a doctor wants to go to the next level in their career they have to go to Bangkok and some do. But most seem content with comfortable lives locally. There is also a significant degree of clan and clone. Relationships formed in University continue afterwards, everyone knows everyone else, every specialist was trained by the same master and all doctors optimise their earnings via consulting privilege's at the private hospitals. All doctors in a particular specialism seem to know exactly the same things and not much more. The web sites of the major private hospitals all show available doctors that can be chosen by patients for consultation, there are over 350 at each, many doctors are registered at all private hospitals. I once had a dispute with one specialist at a private hospital and was unable subsequently to get a consultation with any specialist in the same field in CM, for different reasons, one even said she didn't consult with farangs! The result was that I went to Bangkok for treatment. The "industry" badly needs a shake up. Standards need to be raised, oversight needs to be implemented and the focus moved away from money and on to patient care. I think this happens much better with locals at the District Hospital, the problem is that most foreigners use only the private hospitals which have become a money earning distraction for medical professionalism. In Bangkok at least, there are many competing hospitals where the standards and knowledge levels are very high, Chiang Mai needs that same degree of competition, if market forces alone are to solve the problem.

Call it whatever you want to, it's become unbearably hot, the hottest and most uncomfortable I have ever known in the past 20 years.

Finnish man accused by neighbours of insulting Thai people
nigelforbes replied to snoop1130's topic in Isaan News
It seems they finished him off. -
Biggest risk is riding a motorbike or similar, second biggest risk is driving of any kind. Third biggest risk is behaving like you might back home, loosing your temper, shouting, being aggressive or abusive, not treating others with respect, can all have serious consequences (and you wont see it coming). Street crime, muggings etc....not an issue.

You have farmland in Thailand that you think you have a right to 49% making an agreement? Why do you think you do? How do you arrive at the 49%? Is that through a Thai company that you own? After you die, you no longer have any rights as a result of being married, any rights will expire when you do. You can express any personal wishes that you want to in your will, the question is whether or not they will be binding. Unless there is a legal basis for those wishes to be binding, they can be set aside.

Agreed, good thinking.

Equity Markets
nigelforbes replied to nigelforbes's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Now you've edited your post and turned my question into your poll, is that really what you want to do! Dude, where is your head at!!! I've asked the mods to close the thread, that leaves you free to start your own. -
Equity Markets
nigelforbes replied to nigelforbes's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
You seem to want to pose different questions than me, yours have very little to do with equity markets! If you want your questions answered, please start a thread and ask them there. -
Given that earnings season is under-way and equities markets are responding favourably, I’m wondering how many of you have jumped back in or whether you’re playing a waiting game? Goldmans calculates the chance of US recession this year at 35%, in that events, US equity markets could fall between 20% and 57% (historically). If that happens, contagion will have a knock on effect on the rest of the world. Again, historically, US markets perform best when they return more than 6%, otherwise international markets are the better bet, statstically. Me? I’m half in and half out! 30% in level 5 international equities and underweight USA, 30% in wealth preservation funds, 16% in global trackers and the rest in bonds and cash - no more than 50% in equities in total. The question seems to be whether markets will ignore a recession and keep powering forward, equity markets are after all forward looking and not driven solely by the state of today's economy. The alternative is of course a market fall and the lengthy lead time before recovery. On balance I think markets will keep going, Ukraine wont last forever and the banking crisis appears to have calmed, it even boosted big bank earnings! What do you think?

As always it's a case of different people having different experiences here. My experience of McC has been very poor although at one time it was good, today I avoid them completely. But I do agree with your comments regarding the other hospitals, pricing and profit have taken over completely.

Getting a IBAN bank account
nigelforbes replied to bubblegum's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
IBAN's are for use in Europe, so you want a European bank account, right? I don't know anywhere that lets you open a bank account solely online, perhaps if you were to try a European forum that might help! -
Obviously afraid we'll google the history and see what the readings were for the other 364 days.

What you have written is also my past experience although I have yet to visit Dr Tawatchai, I have heard very good things about him repeatedly over the years. Just to add, there are a number of general practise doctors around the province who are married to foreigners. My experience of them is that their English language and marketing skills appear much better than their diagnostic and patient treatment skills.

TAT estimates 18.5 billion baht spent during Songkran festival
nigelforbes replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I think everyone else understood that it was a typo, 800 million should read 800 billion, of course! Interesting however that TAT sees the ratio of spend at 2:1 where as the ratio of GDP contribution is about 9% domestic and 11% international. Given that International arrivals has not yet ramped up fully, I imagine that ratio is more likely to be 9% and 7% (or lower). Sooo, typo's notwithstanding, what is the basis of the TAT calculation? -
Don't start again! Your many many posts about a whole range of baseless concerns are undermining the credibility of the health forum which serves an important purpose for many people. No, you don't have bone cancer, it sounds like you jerked a muscle at the gym. Go see a doctor and whilst there, ask him about your liver transplant and anything else that bothers you.

You need to see an Orthopedics specialist now. Scoliosis does not suddenly onset without prior trauma. The appearance of leaning to one side or the other might be muscular or disc related, my guess is the latter.

What city is that? Is it 7 year round?

Open Thai Bank Account
nigelforbes replied to UKPaul67's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Either a long stay visa or an agent, there is no third choice. -
Well yes, of course, but all units operate on the same principle that if sized correctly, they will change all the air in the room, once every 15 minutes, that's why we have two machines. So unless you have a particularly leaky house or you leave windows and doors open during poor outside conditions, the readings throughout the house will typically be the same, as long as you've done the sizings correctly. The one in our living room is currently showing 16, the one in the bedroom 17, the two machines together cover 160% of the air capacity of the house.
