  1. I've been on plenty of roads like that too but what surprised me most was how fast the Thais were driving. My wife was driving at 100kph and even she realised she'd be needing a new car very soon if she didn't slow down a bit because the noises coming out of her car as it smashed into hole after hole was worrying to say the least.
  2. I don't know what you're using as a comparison but I've never been on a motorway in Europe with potholes a foot deep
  3. We just spent two days driving from Chiang Rai to Nong Khai. From a distance the roads look good and everyone's belting along at about 70mph. So we did the same. Trouble is, at random intervals, there are huge potholes or large pieces of melted tarmac sticking up and when you hit one of these obstacles at high speed, it feels like the whole car's going to written off. I can't be the only person who's noticed this. Do the Thais think it's normal to have hidden obstacles on an otherwise flat road? Do they replace their cars every six months? I was baffled by this whole story during the whole journey... and I'm not looking forward to the journey home neither (to quote a Birdseye commercial)
  4. Thanks for the detailed information. I had assumed that the road would be busy on the Laos side so you have probably saved me a lot of aggrovation. Seeing as there's no direct flights and I'm not made of money, looks like we're going by bus.
  5. I think we're going to take the bus, mainly because she's got her heart set on travelling, so 32 hours on buses should put her right off, lmao
  6. I've already done that. I need to go to an embassy or consulate to reapply.
  7. Thanks for that. I've done a lot of travelling in my life but this journey is a right pain in the ass to plan. I need to leave the country to apply for a visa. Spent hours looking at all the options so far and none of them seem very appealing
  8. I used to get stopped a lot in Britain, because of the way I looked but I'd always find some way to change the subject and nearly always ended up having a laugh with them. They're only human after all. Anyway, I was looking for the same information about driving on a UK licence and found this https://thailandforme.com/what-license-do-i-need-to-legally-drive-in-thailand/
  9. I need to get from Chiang Rai to Vientiane and that seems like the straightest route. I found an old thread on here about it from 2015 and someone said they might not do visa on arrival.
  10. I just planted these out yesterday. I didn't plan to do it like this but I had no choice in the end. I think the setting was off on the gopro but you can see how bright the sun was and I'm glad I stuck them in the long grass for some shade. Quite happy that they made it through the first night without being eaten by snails.
  11. There's all kinds of decent quality foreign bud for sale now. I've got the same idea as you. I'm moving out to our land next week to start growing with American seeds and hopefully down the line I'll be getting some unique UK strains from another friend.
  12. That's an interesting website, so thanks. I've always wanted to build a floating house. But then, I've got all kinds of mad ideas, which might not fly with the missus. She's quite keen on the superadobe domes though.
  13. ???? Jeez Louise, I've been out of the game for a long time.
  14. Her dad has already built two substantial concrete buildings on the land. I've asked him about the specifics of the build twice but I don't think he's really understood me. Don't panic guys. I'm not going to start erecting anything (ooer) until I know exactly what's what.
  15. I probably will end up following that plan (up to a point) And I will build some eco buildings at some point too.
  16. thank you. that's exactly what I was wondering.
  17. don't you get beasties living in that cavity?
  18. I tried all kinds of things in the past like copper, egg shells, slug pellets (but never felt good about possibly ingesting the poison)
  19. My own seed collection is on it's way from England (hopefully) and my friend is posting some of his from the USA.
  20. Have you got a pic of that? I had so much trouble with slugs in France. Sometimes they'd slice through the stalk of a plant and kill the whole thing. Sativas obviously know what they're doing because they evolved here. I think that's the secret. If a plant is sativa dominant, they should grow ok.
  21. the main thing I'm not sure about is how I'm going to start the foundations. All my previous experience has been to dig down to something solid but I don't this piece of land at all yet
  22. I'm glad I started this thread. I've gone from not having a clue what to do to slowly formulating a plan. Thanks to all the contributors.
  23. Do you know if they use rebar between the bricks? Re, the clay idea. it would have to be more of a cob because clay on its own doesn't work.
  24. I think you missed the point
  25. it's always been like that, but if you get caught, that's a different story. ????
