  2. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. The high-profile online gambling case involving local politician Siradon Phlaiduang, widely known as “Golf,” has now been classified as a transnational crime, following revelations of financial links to a major Cambodian casino operation reportedly controlled by a close associate of former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen. At a press conference on 6 August, held at the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), Police Lieutenant General Trairong Phiwphan, Commissioner of the CCIB, confirmed that investigators had concluded their inquiry into Golf’s involvement in the illicit gambling network. The investigation uncovered clear financial transactions linking Golf’s online gambling operation to a casino owned by Kok An, an influential figure in Cambodia and a long-time confidant of Hun Sen. Police revealed that the financial offices of the online gambling enterprise were based inside Kok An’s casino premises. Given the international elements of the case, the CCIB has submitted all evidence and case files to the Office of the Attorney General, which has accepted it as a transnational case. This transfer places the investigation under the authority of the Attorney General, allowing for cross-border legal proceedings. Previously, Golf had faced charges of assault and illegal gambling. However, the international nature of the operation, spanning national borders and involving foreign financial entities, has elevated the case’s legal complexity and jurisdiction. Authorities have announced that further investigations will now target other individuals connected to the broader criminal network. Police and prosecutors aim to dismantle the syndicate and bring all involved parties to justice. The case marks one of Thailand’s most significant cross-border gambling probes in recent years and reflects increasing regional cooperation in tackling organised cybercrime. 4. Pictures courtesy of Matichon. Police have arrested two drug traffickers and seized a massive cache of illegal narcotics in a significant bust in the capital, recovering 314 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine and 22 kilograms of ketamine, along with the vehicle used to transport the drugs. At a press conference held at the Metropolitan Police Division 8 on 6 August, senior officers including Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, and his deputies announced the arrest of Wasin, aka “Boat”, aged 29 and Afdol, aka “Dol”, aged 24. The arrests follow an extensive investigation under the “No Drugs, No Dealers” initiative, which targeted narcotics networks operating in inner Bangkok. Authorities said the suspects were part of a larger criminal ring linked to a previous arrest in May involving a drug gang in Wang Thonglang. Police tracked the group to Ramkhamhaeng Soi 37 in Bang Kapi district, where the suspects allegedly hid large quantities of drugs in a white Toyota Avanza parked in a residential alley. Surveillance and intelligence gathering revealed that the vehicle was being used to store and distribute narcotics to smaller dealers across the city. On the evening of 4 August at approximately 19:00, investigators observed Wasin and Afdol driving the white Toyota and followed them to a car park in Wang Noi district, Ayutthaya province. The car’s suspicious behaviour led officers to believe a drug transfer was imminent. After the suspects returned to Bangkok and parked the vehicle back in Soi Ramkhamhaeng 37, police moved in and conducted a search. They found: • 239 packets of crystal meth, weighing 239 kilograms • 22 packets of ketamine, weighing 22 kilograms Following questioning, both suspects confessed to transporting the drugs for a fee of 100,000 baht each. They also revealed that more drugs were hidden on the rooftop of a nearby apartment building. A subsequent raid uncovered: • 75 more packets of crystal meth, weighing 75 kilograms, concealed in rainbow-striped sacks. In total, police seized: 1. 314kg of crystal meth (ice) 2. 22kg of ketamine 3. One white Toyota Avanza used for drug transport 4. Three mobile phones linked to drug operations The suspects face multiple charges, including: • Possession of Category 1 narcotics (crystal methamphetamine) with intent to distribute • Possession of Category 2 controlled substances (ketamine) with intent to distribute Authorities are now working to identify the broader network involved. Officers have also initiated proceedings under anti-money laundering laws and are coordinating with the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) to seize related assets and pursue further legal action. 6. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 61-year-old woman in Lampang Province is recovering in hospital after being brutally attacked by her estranged husband in a fit of jealousy. Police from Mae Tha Police Station were called to a house in San Don Kaew Subdistrict, Mae Tha District, on the night of 5 August following reports of a violent assault. Emergency responders from a local rescue foundation arrived at the scene and found the injured woman, identified only as Ms. Som, suffering from serious wounds to the head and body, apparently caused by a bladed weapon and a wooden stick. She was given emergency first aid at the scene before being transported to Mae Tha Hospital, where she is now in stable condition but remains under medical care. Police investigating the scene discovered a bloodstained wooden stick, which was collected as evidence. The alleged attacker, identified as Mr. Ma, 60, was waiting at the scene armed with a knife and surrendered himself to police without resistance. During questioning, Mr. Ma confessed to the attack. He admitted he was enraged after seeing his ex-wife speaking with another man at her home. Although the couple had been separated for over a year, they had not formally divorced. Mr. Ma told officers that he acted out of jealousy and anger, drawing a knife when he saw the other man, who quickly fled the house. Overcome with rage, he struck Ms. Som on the head with the knife and then beat her with the stick before waiting for police to arrive. Authorities have taken Mr. Ma into custody for further interrogation and have filed charges in connection with the assault. The investigation is ongoing and police say he will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-08-07

  8. Picture courtesy of NBT. Immigration Police in Samut Sakhon have arrested a man known by the alias “Dam Wat Tuek”, believed to be the ringleader of a major operation smuggling illegal migrant workers into Thailand. The arrest also uncovered illegal drugs and undocumented foreign nationals allegedly working under his command. On 5 August, officers from the Samut Sakhon Immigration Bureau raided a commercial building in Maha Chai subdistrict, Mueang District, following a tip-off from local Myanmar migrants. The informants claimed that “Dam”, aged 45, was a key figure in organising the transport and shelter of illegal migrants and was also involved in narcotics distribution. Upon arrest, authorities discovered 112 methamphetamine pills and four undocumented Myanmar nationals hiding at the property. Further checks revealed that the suspect had multiple outstanding arrest warrants, including for immigration offences and theft. The suspect now faces multiple charges, including drug possession, aiding and abetting illegal entry into the kingdom and other offences under existing warrants. All detainees have been handed over to investigators at Mueang Samut Sakhon Police Station for legal proceedings. Authorities say they will continue expanding their investigation into the wider network involved in the smuggling operation. Adapted by Asean Now from NBT 2025-08-07
  9. DSI Probes Thai ‘Mule Accounts’ in Cambodian Labour Bribery Case Picture courtesy of Daily News. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has released updates on its probe into a suspected transnational labour extortion network, following high-profile raids in Bangkok last month. The case centres on allegations that Cambodian workers were being charged 2,500 baht in illegal “processing fees” in exchange for work permits, money allegedly funneled through Thai mule bank accounts. 10. Picture courtesy of Daily News. According to DSI officials, a number of Thai individuals and business entities whose bank accounts were allegedly used to channel funds have now testified before investigators. They deny any involvement in the kickback scheme, but admit to conducting legitimate business transactions with Cambodian partners, including cross-border money transfers. Preliminary investigations revealed suspicious financial links between these Thai mule accounts and accounts belonging to high-ranking Cambodian officials. The DSI also confirmed that certain Thai and Cambodian government officers are suspected of having ties to the case. The probe stems from a 3 July operation, during which DSI officers, led by DSI Director-General Police Lieutenant Colonel Yutthana Praedam and senior officials, raided four sites in Bangkok’s Khlong Sam Wa district. The locations were allegedly linked to companies facilitating employment for Cambodian migrant workers, including work permit processing. Investigators are now preparing to submit the case to the DSI’s preliminary review board, before escalating it to the full Special Case Committee. If accepted, the case will be officially designated a special investigation under charges of criminal association and money laundering. The DSI is also examining whether the Cambodian officials’ alleged involvement meets the legal threshold for a transnational organised crime syndicate. However, officials have yet to commit to a clear timeline for when the case will be classified as a special case. Notably, since the DSI’s raid in July, there have been no further reports of illegal fee collection from Cambodian workers, an early sign, authorities suggest, that the pressure may be disrupting the alleged network. The investigation is ongoing, with more witnesses being summoned, including employers, private company directors and officials from Thailand’s Ministry of Labour. The DSI has vowed to pursue the case thoroughly, with Director-General Yutthana instructing his team to proceed with the utmost care and diligence. 12. Picture courtesy of Daily News. In a joint operation, investigators from Police Region 1 and Region 2 arrested a woman accused of orchestrating an online scam involving fake hotel bookings and fraudulent services. The arrest follows a sustained investigation into a rising wave of digital fraud targeting Thai citizens across the country. The suspect, identified only as Ms. Siriporn or “Iew”, was apprehended at a condominium car park in the Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi Province. She was wanted under an arrest warrant issued by the Nonthaburi Provincial Court (Warrant No. จ.995/2568) on charges of public fraud, violating the Computer Crime Act and breaching the Cybersecurity Act. According to police, the suspect ran a sophisticated operation by posting fake advertisements online for hotel bookings, accommodation deals and various services. Victims were tricked into transferring money to mule accounts which were regularly changed to avoid detection. During the arrest, police seized the suspect’s mobile phone and the SIM card used in the scheme. This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on digital scams in Thailand, which authorities report now occur at a rate of around 1,000 cases per day. Notably, 50% of these cases are committed by Thai nationals defrauding fellow citizens through low-value scams that cumulatively cause significant social and economic harm. Investigators were able to link Ms. Siriporn’s activities to at least 20 additional cases through the Police Online reporting system. As a result, eight suspicious bank accounts have been frozen pending further investigation. Police have vowed to continue expanding their investigation, targeting local fraud networks and working proactively to prevent similar scams. The operation aims to restore public confidence and reduce the incidence of online fraud nationwide. Adapted by Asean Now from Daily News 2025-08-07

  14. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. The National Police Commissioner-General Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanphet has officially launched the “MPB BASIC SWAT 2025” tactical training programme aimed at equipping Metropolitan Police officers with advanced operational skills to respond swiftly to high-risk incidents. The opening ceremony, held at 10:30 on 4 August and was attended by senior police officials including Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB), and several deputy commissioners and commanders from Bangkok’s precincts. The training programme, part of the 2025 fiscal year initiative, focuses on strengthening tactical capabilities at the police station level. Running from 4 August to 5 September, it comprises five training batches, each lasting five days, with a total of 511 officers participating. Initially, 115 officers from MPB Divisions 1 and 2 are undergoing intensive training to develop special operations teams within local police stations. These teams will serve as first responders in critical situations, bridging the gap before elite national-level SWAT units can be deployed. Pol. Gen. Kittirat stressed the importance of the programme, highlighting recent incidents involving weapon snatching and injuries to officers. He emphasised the need for local officers to be both prepared and capable of acting as tactical units when responding to violent or unpredictable events. “The goal is to create familiarity, teamwork, and readiness within each local station,” said Kittirat. “In case of emergencies, neighbouring precincts must be ready to assist. This training is not just about drills, it’s about saving lives.” Officers are being trained in weapons handling, tactical movement, situational awareness and real-time response under pressure. After completing the course, promising candidates will be considered for the role of reserve special operations units, capable of immediate deployment in the field. Each police station will send five officers to participate. These personnel must be fully committed, and trainers are expected to deliver instruction that matches national-level tactical standards. The Commissioner urged trainees to take the course seriously, stating: “You’ve been selected, now prove you’re capable.” Upon completion, participants will demonstrate their skills in realistic simulation exercises at high-risk venues such as shopping centres and convenience stores. The simulations will be reviewed by senior police leadership to ensure that the training translates into effective real-world application. Pol. Gen. Kittirat also reaffirmed the national police’s continued focus on combating drug-related crime and border security, particularly in response to potential fallout from regional conflicts. Pol. Maj. Gen. Charin Kopattata, Deputy Commissioner of MPB, added that the increasing frequency of incidents involving armed and mentally unstable individuals necessitated the formation of station-level tactical response teams. The new programme, he said, aims to boost confidence in the police, enhance public trust, and reduce loss of life through effective, modern, and measured tactical responses. The initiative reflects an evolving approach within the Royal Thai Police, emphasising decentralised readiness, precision and professionalism in confronting threats. 15. Fuel Tank Explosion at Factory Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Injured Pictures courtesy of Matichon. 16. Pictures courtesy of Matichon. A powerful explosion rocked an oil equipment manufacturing plant in Tha Maka district Kanchanaburi, on the afternoon of 6 August, killing one worker and injuring two others. The incident, initially reported as a gas explosion and fire, has since been clarified as a maintenance-related incident involving a fuel tank. At approximately 14:20, the Rom Thai emergency radio centre received reports of a violent explosion at the Tuspao Company factory, located in Moo 6, Tha Mai Subdistrict. Witnesses reported a loud blast followed by thick black smoke billowing into the sky, prompting panic among nearby residents and an immediate response from local fire and rescue services. Initial reports suggested a gas-related fire; however, by 15:00, police and forensic officers had entered the scene and confirmed there had been no gas involved. The explosion occurred while workers were welding a 2,000-litre fuel storage tank as part of routine maintenance. The blast killed 47-year-old maintenance technician Anom instantly. His body was found lying face-up, having suffered catastrophic injuries from the blast impact, including severe trauma to the head. Two additional workers, Weerapol 25, and Chusak 24, sustained injuries and were rushed to Makharak Hospital for treatment. Kanchanaburi Governor Athisan Intrara and Deputy Governor Wutthipong Supakwanit received updates from the Provincial Energy Office, which investigated the cause of the incident. Officials determined that improper maintenance procedures had led to the explosion. The tank, previously used to store fuel, had not been adequately cleaned or prepared before welding. Crucially, the tank’s cap had not been removed to allow vapour escape, causing pressure to build and ignite upon contact with welding sparks. The Energy Office confirmed that the explosion was not caused by a gas cylinder. The factory does not fall under the category of a regulated fuel-handling facility under the Fuel Control Act B.E. 2542 (1999). Nevertheless, relevant authorities, including the Provincial Industry Office, have been notified to take further legal action. Company owner Thadphong Hakpaksa was present at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-08-07

  18. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. An entire district in Udon Thani has been left reeling after dozens of residents reported being swindled in an alleged investment scam involving a local funeral fund officer. The estimated losses exceed 100 million baht, with victims including the elderly, working-age adults and even teenagers. On 5 August, nearly 50 residents from various subdistricts in Kut Chap District gathered at Kut Chap Police Station to file formal complaints and record their statements. The case has drawn the attention of senior officers, including Police Colonel Amarin Uyen, the station’s superintendent, who met personally with the victims. At the centre of the scandal is 43-year-old Ms. Kom, a resident of Tan Lian Subdistrict, who allegedly convinced locals to invest or lend money under the pretense that it was needed temporarily to cover funeral contributions for clients of a local bank-affiliated welfare fund. She reportedly promised generous interest returns and assured lenders that funds would be returned within a week or a month. Initially, some villagers received interest payments, which encouraged further lending. However, those payments eventually stopped, and Ms. Kom allegedly became unreachable. Individual losses range from tens of thousands to millions of baht, with one person reportedly losing as much as 14 million baht. Ms. Kom, believed to be a funeral fund officer at a local financial institution, reportedly exploited her position of trust within the community. One particularly heart-wrenching case involves 60-year-old Ms. Nun, whose daughter working abroad had sent her 1.3 million baht for safekeeping. Ms. Nun said she gave the money to her niece, Ms. Kom, believing it would be safe and used for a good cause. “She’s my niece, and I trusted her. She never showed any sign she would do something like this,” Ms. Nun said tearfully. “Now I can’t sleep. All the money my daughter worked so hard for in Korea is gone.” Ms. Nun revealed that when she recently confronted Ms. Kom after her discharge from hospital, the accused refused to speak. Ms. Kom’s parents reportedly told victims to take legal action if they wanted compensation, stating they would not take responsibility for their daughter’s actions. Several victims say they were given loan agreements or receipts. Some transferred money via bank accounts, while others handed over large sums in cash, with photographic proof of the handovers. Villagers described Ms. Kom as persuasive, well-presented, and active on social media, where she frequently livestreamed sales and gained a following in the community. Police have confirmed that complaints have been filed from nearly every subdistrict in Kut Chap. Colonel Amarin stated that officers are documenting each case and will proceed with legal action. Victims are also preparing civil suits in an attempt to recover their losses. The case is ongoing and is being closely watched by authorities amid growing concerns about fraud targeting rural communities. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-08-07

  20. Picture courtesy of CH7. A 35-year-old man has died after being ambushed and shot outside his home in Sisaket province. Despite surviving two previous assassination attempts, this time he succumbed to gunshot wounds while being rushed to hospital. The victim, identified as Mr. Wuttipong, was discovered seriously injured behind his one-storey concrete house in Ban Phon Yai, Kanthararom subdistrict, Khukhan district. Rescue workers attempted to save his life by transporting him to Khukhan Hospital, but he died en route. At around 23:30 on 5 August, police and forensic investigators arrived at the scene. Evidence of multiple gunshots was found near a fold-out picnic table in front of the house. Local detectives and officers from the Sisaket Provincial Police Investigation Division gathered additional forensic evidence and collected footage from nearby CCTV cameras to identify the assailants. Ms. Thanu, 49, a neighbour living opposite the victim, told reporters she was at home when she heard what sounded like loud banging, at first mistaking it for someone hitting a metal panel. It wasn’t until her sister came calling that she learned Mr. Wuttipong had been shot. Together with other locals, they contacted emergency services. She added that the house had been targeted by gunfire once before, several months ago, but no one had been injured at that time. “I don’t know why people keep coming to shoot here. It’s frightening, we have small children in our home,” she said. Ms. Nattanaree Butr-ngam, 46, a local subdistrict councillor, revealed that Mr. Wuttipong had previously survived two shooting attempts, the first near Wat Sophon temple, close to his home, and the second just outside his own house, the same location as this final and fatal attack. She described the victim as quiet and reserved. “He would often sit in front of his house. I’d see people waiting there to get tattoos from him and he often brewed kratom tea to drink.” Although Mr. Wuttipong had been screened twice in community anti-drug initiatives, no substances were found in his system. Ms. Nattanaree suspects the murder was the result of a long-standing feud. Police say the gunmen arrived on a motorbike, wearing face coverings. CCTV footage shows the suspects circling the area several times before the shooting. Investigators believe two people were involved and are working to identify them. Friends of the victim are being questioned, and authorities are confident the perpetrators will be apprehended soon. Adapted by Asean Now from CH7 2025-08-07

Officials from The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), in coordination with the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and local police, have raided a private company warehouse in Samut Prakan, seizing a large cache of advanced surveillance equipment. Acting on intelligence reports, the authorities launched the operation on 5 August, suspecting the warehouse was being used to import and store sophisticated drone technologies and counter-drone systems. During the raid, officials confiscated an extensive collection of high-value equipment, including 29 drones, 129 drone signal-jamming guns, 38 signal detection devices and a fully equipped mobile surveillance van capable of tracking and disrupting drone activity. The company’s manager reportedly cooperated with authorities during the search. Initial investigations reveal the firm is legally registered and imports equipment from Singapore. Each piece of gear is believed to cost millions of baht, with the mobile surveillance vehicle alone valued at over 40 million baht. The company’s primary clients are said to be government agencies specialising in national security. A source close to the investigation stated that while the business operations appear legal, authorities seized all items for further examination. The probe is now being expanded to determine whether the imported equipment poses any risks to national or international security. Investigations are ongoing.
