Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 71-year-old man died after attempting to extinguish a fire that had spread across his sugarcane field in the Leung Nok Tha district of Yasothon province. Police Lieutenant Prasert Losak, an investigating officer at Leung Nok Tha Police Station, was notified of the fatal incident and attended the scene alongside a duty doctor from Leung Nok Tha Hospital and rescue workers from the Por Phra Mae Leung Nok Tha Foundation. The incident occurred in a sugarcane field near Nong Kaem cassava yard in Village 4, Ban Nong Bueng, Hongsang Subdistrict. Upon arrival, officials found the body of Mr. Pornchai Charoenta, 71, a local resident of Village 11, Hongsang Subdistrict, lying face down in the middle of the field. His lower body had been severely burned, and the surrounding area showed extensive signs of fire damage. Relatives of the deceased reported that Mr. Pornchai had gone to the field earlier to burn rice stubble. However, the hot weather combined with strong winds caused the flames to spread rapidly to his adjacent sugarcane field, where only stubble and dry leaves remained. Mr. Pornchai attempted to put out the blaze, but thick smoke and the intense heat likely caused him to lose consciousness, resulting in his death. It was noted that he also suffered from high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which may have contributed to his vulnerability. Police confirmed that the family raised no suspicions regarding the cause of death. The body has been released for religious rites. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-04-28.

Pictures courtesy captured from CCTV. A manhunt is underway after a suspect who assaulted and robbed a female forest officer fled across provinces, initially hiding in Lamphun. The crime took place in Phayao Province, and the suspect is believed to have escaped to a relative’s home in the rural area of Lamphun. On April 27, authorities in Lamphun’s Wang Nuea District, led by District Chief Thosapol Chakkaraphun and local police, raided the Pong Tham area of Wang Thong Subdistrict. The search follows a court-issued warrant for 31-year-old Arun Tonsee, who is accused of assaulting and robbing a female officer from the forest fire control unit in Phayao. Arun allegedly fled the scene on a motorcycle, crossing provincial borders to hide at his relative’s home in Lamphun. On the evening of April 26, Arun’s parents attempted to assist authorities by leading them to a location deep in the forest behind the village, hoping to convince Arun to surrender. Despite over an hour of negotiations, the suspect remained uncooperative and managed to evade capture by riding his motorcycle through the police blockade, heading towards the Wang Nuea-Payayao Road. Police pursued him, but he managed to escape again. Authorities later received a tip-off from a local resident, reporting that Arun had returned briefly to the village to collect clothes before fleeing again, heading back towards Phayao. Police have now intensified their search efforts in the direction of Phayao. Thosapol Chakkaraphun, the Wang Nuea District Chief, confirmed that the suspect was considered dangerous and may be armed. He stated that authorities had attempted to communicate with the suspect’s family in hopes of convincing him to surrender peacefully. However, Arun’s whereabouts remain unknown as he has reportedly fled back towards Phayao. Surveillance footage from April 27 shows Arun entering the village early in the morning, before fleeing once again. Authorities continue their pursuit of the suspect, urging local residents to remain vigilant. Adapted by Asean Now from ThaiRath 2025-04-28.

Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A crash in Chonburi has resulted in the death of one motorcyclist and left another severely injured after a drunk driver crashed his pickup truck into a motorcycle, dragging it more than 60 metres along the road. The incident occurred at 23:00 on April 26, along the Phanthong-Mabpong Road in the Phanthong District of Chonburi. Police and rescue teams quickly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the white Isuzu pickup truck, with front-end damage and a shattered windshield. The driver, 34-year-old Wasun, appeared to be intoxicated. Nearby, the wrecked Yamaha Fino motorcycle lay on the ground, with skid marks visible along the road for over 60 metres. The female passenger, 48-year-old Duangjai, was severely injured and rushed to the hospital, while the male rider, 44-year-old Sarn, was found without a pulse. Despite efforts from the rescue team to resuscitate him, he was declared dead at the scene. Witnesses reported seeing the pickup truck accelerating aggressively after the traffic light turned green, speeding off at high speed. One witness, who had been following the vehicle, noted that it had rapidly pulled away from the traffic light and moments later collided with the motorcycle. Upon questioning, Wasun, the pickup driver, refused to speak and did not provide any statement. He was arrested and taken to the police station, where a breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol level significantly over the legal limit. Wasun has been charged for causing the death and injury. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 29-year-old lorry driver was wounded in the early hours of 27 April, after being shot during a violent road rage incident on Phetkasem Road. The attack occurred at around 03.00 near kilometre marker 315+600 in Ban Na Thong, Khlong Wan subdistrict, Mueang district. Officers from Khlong Wan Police Station and rescue workers from Sawang Prachuap Thammasathan Foundation attended the scene. Initial reports stated that the injured man had already been rushed to Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital by fellow lorry drivers due to the severity of his injuries. Officers subsequently inspected the scene, where they found five spent 11mm bullet casings and one bullet head. The area was poorly lit, making the investigation more challenging. Forensic officers collected the evidence for fingerprint analysis. The injured man, identified as Mr Ampol 29, had been shot once in the side near the waist and remained in critical condition. Witnesses, including 34-year-old Mr Wut, recounted the dramatic events. He and Mr Ampol were transporting energy drinks from Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province to Hat Yai, Songkhla province. Mr Wut explained that while passing through a green traffic light in Prachuap Khiri Khan town, a bronze-gold Toyota Vios with Prachuap Khiri Khan plates abruptly cut across their lorry from the left-hand lane. In response, Mr Wut followed the Vios until reaching the point of the shooting, where he overtook the car and activated his hazard lights to signal the driver to stop. Mr Wut and Mr Ampol then approached the Vios and asked the driver why he had cut in front of them. The driver denied any wrongdoing before suddenly drawing a handgun and firing multiple rounds at close range. The gunfire narrowly missed Mr Wut, knocking his hat off, and he and Mr Ampol fled in different directions. Unfortunately, Mr Ampol, described as heavier set and slower to escape, was struck in the torso by a bullet that entered from his lower back and lodged in his chest. Mr Wut quickly returned to assist his injured colleague, driving him directly to hospital for emergency treatment. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Police are continuing their investigation to track down the gunman. Adapted by Asean Now from Khoasod 2025-04-28.

Picture courtesy of Matichon. The government has revealed that almost 30,000 online gambling websites and pages have been shut down in the first quarter of 2025, with more than 4,600 people arrested in connection with illegal online betting activities. Ms Sasikarn Wattanajan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, announced that between 1 January and 31 March 2025, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society had monitored and taken action against online crime, leading to the closure of 29,185 URLs related to online gambling. Additionally, authorities arrested 4,627 individuals involved in operating, promoting, or participating in online gambling activities. Ms Sasikarn further stated that the crackdown also targeted websites under the “888.bet” family of domains, including those that altered their names slightly to evade detection. Since 2022, 200 URLs associated with this network have been blocked, with a further 118 URLs currently awaiting court orders for closure. She warned that online gambling not only results in financial loss but also increases the risk of fraud, personal data breaches, and legal consequences. Under Thailand’s Gambling Act, anyone found organising, playing, or promoting online gambling faces up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to 5,000 baht, or both. “Participation in any form of online gambling is a criminal offence. If you encounter any online gambling invitations or advertisements, it is vital to avoid engagement and report them to the relevant authorities,” Ms Sasikarn urged, emphasising the government’s commitment to fostering a safer, gambling-free society. Picture courtesy of Amarin. A crash in Phayao could have resulted in an explosion after a 22-wheel container lorry collided with a stationary fuel tanker on the side of the road. The incident took place at approximately 13:30 on April 27, along the Ubali-Ban Jampawai Road, in the Mueang District of Phayao province. The collision occurred when the 22-wheel container lorry, registration from Chonburi, crashed into the rear of a fuel tanker. The force of the crash caused damage to the front left side of the lorry, shattering various parts of the vehicle. The driver, 26-year-old Jakkrikrit Thanawiset, sustained head injuries and was quickly attended to by emergency responders before being transported to Phayao Hospital for further treatment. The fuel tanker, registered from Suphanburi, had been parked on the shoulder of the road while the driver was inside drinking coffee. The driver reported hearing a loud noise from behind and realised that the tanker had been struck by the container lorry. As a result of the impact, part of fuel tanker’s tank was ruptured, leaking fuel onto the road. Firefighters and emergency rescue teams from Mae Ka Municipal Rescue Service were dispatched to the scene, bringing fire trucks to control of the situation and prevent a potential fire. The driver of the fuel tanker believes the 22-wheel lorry may have been involved in a “sleeping driver” incident, suggesting that the lorry driver fell asleep behind the wheel before colliding with the tanker. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident, and insurance companies from both parties have been notified to assess the damage. Adapted by Asean Now from Amarin 2025-04-28.

Pictures courtesy of Chonburi News. Two foreign nationals have been fined following a drunken altercation with a Thai national motorcycle rider in Pattaya, which escalated into a street brawl. The incident occurred when a delivery rider, was en route to deliver an order. A car, driven by two foreign men, reportedly grazed his motorcycle without causing a collision. Witnesses stated that the visibly intoxicated foreigners then threw a bag of rubbish from their vehicle, which struck the rider. The rider approached the car, sounding his horn to confront the men about their behaviour. In response, one of the foreigners opened the car door and began shouting abuse. The driver soon joined in, leading to a heated verbal exchange. The situation quickly turned violent, with both foreigners allegedly assaulting the 44-year-old rider, who sustained bruises and other minor injuries. Throughout the altercation, the men reportedly hurled insults at Thai people, despite the efforts of a Thai woman who tried to intervene. As the fracas unfolded outside a convenience store, several bystanders, angered by the foreigners’ disrespectful behaviour, stepped in to assist the rider. Witnesses said the crowd retaliated, pushing and striking the tourists, who eventually fled into the shop seeking refuge. Police from Pattaya City Police Station soon arrived at the scene. The foreigners, fearing for their safety, sought protection from officers and accused local residents of stealing their mobile phone. Authorities successfully defused the situation and escorted all involved parties to the police station. The two tourists, whose names and nationality was not disclosed by authorities, were fined for disorderly conduct and agreed to pay 15,000 baht in compensation to the injured rider before being released. Officials confirmed that no serious injuries were reported and that the case was resolved amicably without further escalation. Adapted by Asean Now from Chonburi News 2025-04-28.

Respected Labour Official Killed as Truck Crashes into Pickup at Police Checkpoint Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Colleagues are mourning the loss of a senior government official after a lorry collided with his pickup truck near a police checkpoint in Kamphaeng Phet province. The fatal collision occurred at approximately 23.15 on 26 April on the southbound lanes of Phaholyothin Road, in front of a tyre shop in Salokbat subdistrict, Khanu Woralaksaburi district. Police and rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene. Authorities found a lorry transporting coal debris, registered in Prachuap Khiri Khan, had slammed into the back of a pickup truck registered in Nakhon Sawan. The collision claimed the life of Mr Somrat 58, a Senior Labour Academic with the Kamphaeng Phet Provincial Employment Office. Preliminary investigations revealed that Mr Somrat had been driving his private vehicle from Mueang Kamphaeng Phet district towards Nakhon Sawan. Traffic had slowed as vehicles queued to pass through a police checkpoint operated by Khanu Woralaksaburi Police Station. It is believed that the lorry, travelling behind Mr Somrat’s vehicle, failed to slow down in time and struck the rear of his pickup with considerable force, pushing it into another lorry ahead. Mr Somrat died at the scene. The lorry driver, Mr Tawee 58, was taken into custody for questioning. Alcohol tests carried out at the scene confirmed that he was not under the influence. Police are continuing their investigation into the exact cause of the collision. Adapted by Asean Now from Khoasod 2025-04-28.

Two Workers Injured by Falling Crane Cage in Late-Night Incident in Bangkok Pictured courtesy of Siam News Two workers have been seriously injured after falling with a crane cage while attempting to dismantle a roadside structure in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district. Pictured courtesy of Siam News Two workers have been seriously injured after falling with a crane cage while attempting to dismantle a roadside structure in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district. At approximately 01.30 on 27 April, police from Huai Khwang station were alerted to the incident on Pracharat Bamphen Road, near Huai Khwang Junction. Officers, along with rescue teams from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation and emergency responders from Narenthorn (Rajavithi Hospital), were dispatched to the scene. On arrival, emergency crews found that one lane of traffic had been closed to allow construction work to take place. Two crane trucks were parked by the roadside, their booms raised. Nearby, two injured workers were discovered lying on the ground in visible pain, suffering from multiple injuries to their bodies and faces. First aid was administered at the scene before the men were rushed to hospital for further treatment. The injured were later identified as: • Mr Pongpetch 43, from Udon Thani province, who sustained injuries to his face and legs. He was transported to Ramathibodi Hospital by Poh Teck Tung Foundation paramedics. • Mr Thanaphon 30, from Ubon Ratchathani province, who suffered severe chest injuries consistent with being struck by a heavy object, along with other bodily wounds. He was taken to Rajavithi Hospital by Narenthorn paramedics. Preliminary investigations suggest that the two men had been working from the crane cage to secure ropes around a steel traffic sign frame, which was to be dismantled using gas cutting equipment. For reasons still under investigation, the cage detached from the crane arm, causing the men and cage to plummet approximately four to five metres onto the road surface. Witnesses at the scene said the workers had been hired to dismantle the traffic sign structure and were in the process of securing it when the incident occurred. Police have stated that they will summon the worksite supervisor for further questioning as part of efforts to determine the cause of the incident. Adapted by Asean Now from SiamNews 2025-04-28.

Bomb Attack on Paramilitary Base Injures 75-Year-Old Man Picture from Matichon Tensions flared in the troubled southern provinces on 27 April, when insurgents hurled two pipe bombs at a paramilitary base, injuring a 75-year-old civilian. Picture from Matichon Tensions flared in the troubled southern provinces on 27 April, when insurgents hurled two pipe bombs at a paramilitary base, injuring a 75-year-old civilian. The incident occurred at around 14:00 at the operations base of Paramilitary Company 4602, located in Ban Sue So, Village 4, Rueso District, Narathiwat Province. Police Colonel Direk Chomyong, Deputy Commander of Narathiwat Provincial Police, Colonel Sitthichai Bamrungket, Commander of Task Force 56, and other forensic and bomb disposal teams rushed to the scene alongside a contingent of police and soldiers. According to reports, four assailants riding two motorbikes approached the base during heavy rainfall. The pillion passengers on each motorcycle threw improvised pipe bombs into the compound. One bomb landed on a concrete yard within the base, creating a crater approximately one centimetre deep and six centimetres wide, with shrapnel and fragments scattered across the area. The second device landed on the tarmac road directly in front of the base, near house number 50/1. Although no soldiers were harmed, shrapnel from the explosion injured Mr Yuso Jehko, 75, who was being transported home on a motorbike by his neighbour, Mr Ismae Boeitae, 68. Mr Yuso sustained injuries to his right shoulder blade area. Emergency teams quickly cordoned off the scene, wary of potential secondary attacks designed to target responders. After receiving first aid at Rue So Hospital, Mr Yuso was discharged and permitted to recover at home. Investigators discovered parts of the explosive devices, which had been packed into cylindrical iron tubes approximately three inches in diameter and six inches long, weighing around two kilogrammes. A blue plastic safety pin was also recovered as evidence. Authorities believe the attack was the work of local insurgents aiming to assassinate security personnel and destabilise the area. The attack comes amid ongoing violence in Thailand’s southern border provinces, where separatist movements have been active for decades. Police and military units have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, who fled the scene immediately after the attack. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-04-28.

Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Heavy rain and strong winds caused chaos early morning on 27 April, when a lorry carrying mangoes crashed into the rear of a stationary trailer and truck, sparking a fire on the Asia Highway near Ayutthaya. The crash occurred at around 01.00 near kilometre marker 17, close to a highway police service area in Khlong Suan Phlu subdistrict, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district. Police Lieutenant Samart Raksasak of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Police Station responded to the incident along with local fire crews and rescue teams. At the scene, firefighters battled intense flames engulfing a six-wheeled lorry fully loaded with mangoes. The blaze had quickly spread to two police patrol vehicles parked nearby, damaging them, Authorities have given no details of if the police vehicles were at the scene prior to the collision or parked too close to the developing incident. It took more than 30 minutes for the fire to be brought under control. Debris was strewn across the road, including hundreds of mangoes and the detached wheel of the lorry. The trailer, which was transporting cement, showed significant damage to its rear and signs of minor fire damage. Eyewitnesses reported that torrential rain and powerful winds severely reduced visibility. One witness following the mango truck said they saw flames coming from its rear wheels moments before it lost control and crashed heavily into the trailer, reigniting a fierce fire. Mr Somporn 44, the driver of the mango lorry, said he had been transporting mangoes from Sukhothai province to Samut Sakhon. As he approached the service area, heavy rain impaired his visibility, preventing him from seeing the stationary trailer in time to avoid a collision. Fortunately, he managed to escape from his burning vehicle unharmed. Mr Nookrai 43, the driver of the trailer, stated that he had been resting inside his vehicle when he was awoken by the sound of a violent crash. He quickly moved his truck and trailer away from the flames to prevent further damage. Highway police officers at the scene confirmed that the stormy weather had created hazardous driving conditions. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Police have collected evidence from the scene and have summoned both drivers for further questioning as they continue to investigate the cause of the incident. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A former subdistrict assistant headman was killed in a brutal assault after attending a monk ordination ceremony in Ratchaburi province. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 00.10 on 27 April at the entrance to Soi 6, Village 3, Ban Rai subdistrict, Damnoen Saduak district. Police from Damnoen Saduak Station, forensic officers, hospital staff, and rescue workers rushed to the scene. They discovered the body of Mr Ekkarin 36, lying face-up on the road. His head showed severe injuries from blunt force trauma and two gunshot wounds. Near the scene, officers recovered a .357 calibre bullet and found a holster still strapped to the deceased’s waist, but the firearm itself was missing. It was also reported that another man had been critically wounded by gunfire and had been rushed to Damnoen Saduak Hospital by witnesses. According to preliminary investigations, Mr Ekkarin, who had resigned from his post but continued supporting local administrative work, had attended the ordination ceremony at a nearby temple. As the event concluded, he walked alone towards his parked vehicle at the mouth of the alley. Residents reported hearing a loud commotion and emerged to find four young men assaulting Mr Ekkarin. Witnesses then heard multiple gunshots before the assailants fled on motorcycles, leaving Mr Ekkarin lying motionless. It later emerged that one of the attackers had also been injured during the scuffle. Police believe that during the struggle, Mr Ekkarin may have attempted to draw his own firearm and shot one of the assailants, only for the gun to be wrested away and used against him. He was shot twice in the head and beaten with a blunt object. The injured assailant has been placed under police guard at the hospital, pending interrogation once his condition improves. Investigators have already identified the suspects involved and will seek arrest warrants from Ratchaburi Provincial Court. Mr Ekkarin’s body has been sent to Ratchaburi Hospital’s forensic unit for autopsy to extract the bullets for further examination. Police are continuing their investigations to track down the remaining suspects and to recover the missing firearm. Adapted by Asean Now from Khoasod 2025-04-28.

Picture from responders. A family has been left devastated after their 23-year-old son, who was due to be ordained as a monk in just a few weeks, was killed in a road accident early morning on 27 April. The crash occurred at around 06.00 on the Bang Na–Trat Road, kilometre marker 37, inbound towards Bangkok, in Bang Samak subdistrict, Bang Pakong district, Chachoengsao province. Pol. Lt. Somsak Puangsuk, an investigating officer at Bang Pakong Police Station, rushed to the scene alongside rescue teams from Chachoengsao. Officers found a severely damaged minivan, registered in Bangkok, which had collided with the rear of a six-wheeled lorry belonging to a transport company, also registered in Bangkok. Inside the minivan, rescuers discovered the body of Mr Saharat 23, trapped behind the steering wheel. Hydraulic cutting equipment was used to extricate the body, which was later sent to Bang Pakong Hospital for autopsy. According to Mr Somporn 41, the driver of the six-wheeled lorry, he had just refuelled and was merging from the frontage road onto the express lanes when he suddenly heard a loud crash from behind. On exiting his vehicle, he found that the minivan had slammed into the back of his lorry with great force, resulting in the driver’s instant death, a fact confirmed by rescue workers at the scene. Mr Prasert and Mrs Phannee, the victim’s grieving parents, spoke through tears, saying that their son was known to drive cautiously and was preparing to enter the monkhood in a few weeks’ time. “Just this morning, we saw him and spoke to him. We never imagined something like this could happen,” they said. Police have documented the scene and taken Mr Somporn in for further questioning as part of their ongoing investigation. Legal proceedings will follow as appropriate. Adapted by Asean Now from Khoasod 2025-04-28.
