UPDATE Anthrax Scare: 2 More Test Negative as Health Officials Monitor 36 at-Risk Individuals Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Health authorities in Mukdahan province are continuing to monitor a group of 36 individuals who were involved in the slaughtering of a dead cow, following the confirmation of one fatal anthrax case and one further confirmed infection. Dr Narong Chankaew, Chief Public Health Officer of Mukdahan, provided an update on the situation on 3 May, revealing that two additional individuals who had undergone lab testing for anthrax have tested negative. Laboratory results used the RT-PCR method to detect the presence of Bacillus anthracis, the bacterium that causes the disease. The current outbreak emerged after a local man died from anthrax following the slaughter and consumption of raw beef. A close friend of the deceased also tested positive and is currently undergoing treatment. The group under surveillance comprises 36 people who were directly involved in handling or processing the carcass of the infected cow. One additional individual remains under close observation while awaiting test results. Local health volunteers have been assigned to visit those under monitoring at their homes daily. Dr Narong stressed that the situation remains under control, and public health teams are maintaining strict precautions to prevent further spread of the disease. Anthrax is a rare but serious illness that typically affects livestock and can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with infected animals or consumption of contaminated meat. The current monitoring effort aims to ensure early detection and swift intervention to contain any potential risk. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-04. -

Picture courtesy of Kaoded. A driver of an international bus operating between Mukdahan, Thailand, and Savannakhet, Laos, was caught attempting to smuggle 4,200 electronic cigarettes hidden in a concealed compartment beneath the vehicle. The incident occurred at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge II border checkpoint in Mukdahan. Officers from the 2105th Ranger Special Task Force, the Surasak Montri Task Force, and the Wildlife Checkpoint were carrying out routine inspections of cross-border buses when they found six large cardboard boxes in the luggage compartment of a Mukdahan–Savannakhet bus, registered in Mukdahan. Upon opening them, officers discovered 1,200 e-cigarettes. However, before a full inspection of the upper cabin could be carried out, customs officials at the checkpoint informed the military personnel that they had already searched the passenger area and found only snack boxes. They then allowed the vehicle to pass through the checkpoint. Later, senior military officers, having been briefed on the partial discovery and aware of the government’s strict ban on illegal e-cigarette imports, ordered a full re-inspection. Military and police units, including immigration officers, border patrol police, city police investigators, and the marine police, tracked the vehicle to the rear of Mukdahan provincial bus terminal. A thorough search of the bus’s interior revealed a hidden compartment at the rear of the passenger cabin, which contained 15 additional boxes with 3,000 more e-cigarettes. Authorities also found large quantities of raincoats and snack products, all undeclared and not cleared by customs. The bus driver, identified as Mr. Sombat Khotsongkram, a resident of Moo 13, Nikhom Kham Soi subdistrict, was detained. Customs officials stated that he would initially be treated as a witness while the case is further investigated. This seizure highlights ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to crack down on illegal imports, particularly the smuggling of e-cigarettes, which are banned in Thailand and subject to heavy enforcement. Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 61-year-old man was struck and killed by lightning early morning on 3 May, while riding his motorcycle with a sidecar to check on his sugarcane fields in Buriram province, despite his wife’s pleas for him to stay home. The incident occurred around 08:00, near the rear of Ban Na Fai village, Moo 6, in Ban Dan subdistrict, Ban Dan district. Pol Sub Lt Niyom Thuamthaisong, an investigator at Ban Dan Police Station, was alerted to the fatality by Ban Dan Hospital and responded to the scene with municipal rescue personnel. At the site, authorities found a black and red Honda motorcycle with a sidecar. Tools including a hoe and a spade were resting in the sidecar. The deceased, Mr Amnat Tentiram, was discovered lying on his back on the motorcycle, with his legs still straddling the seat, a posture indicating he had been struck while still riding. Burn marks were observed near his left ear and along his torso, while his clothing also showed signs of burning. The motorcycle itself bore only minor damage. Officials estimate the lightning strike occurred approximately one hour prior to discovery. Mr Amnat’s wife, 53-year-old Mrs Farung, tearfully recounted that the couple owned a 10-rai sugarcane plantation on the outskirts of the village. Her husband routinely left each morning to tend the fields. On this particular morning, around 06:00, she urged him not to go as heavy rain had fallen the night before and the skies were still dark and drizzling. “He said it was just a light rain and insisted on going,” she said. “Then later a neighbour came to tell me he’d been struck by lightning.” Mrs Farung added that he had taken only his mobile phone with him, and she was unsure what might have attracted the lightning. Local authorities noted that lightning fatalities occur every rainy season in Buriram, typically affecting people working in open fields, such as livestock herders and fishermen. However, this is believed to be the first recorded case in the province of a lightning strike killing someone while riding a motorcycle. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-05-04.

Brutal Execution of Ex-Convict in Bangkok: Police Suspect Hired Gunmen Pictured courtesy of Khaosod. Pictured courtesy of Khaosod. A 34-year-old man was gunned down in cold blood in the early hours of 3 May, in Bangkok’s Bueng Kum district, in what police believe may have been a contract killing. The victim, identified only as Mr Thossaphon, was found dead on the ground floor of a five-storey commercial building in Soi Nuanchan 22. He had sustained nine gunshot wounds to the head and torso. Officers from Khok Kram Police Station, forensic experts from the Police General Hospital, and volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation responded to the scene shortly after 1am. Twelve spent 9mm bullet casings were initially recovered at the scene, though forensic officers later reported a total of 15 casings, suggesting the gunmen fired extensively. According to eyewitnesses, two men arrived on a red Honda PCX motorcycle and appeared to be searching for someone at a nearby snooker club. Failing to locate their target, they proceeded down the alley, where they encountered the victim riding in on his motorcycle. The suspects doubled back, followed him, and as the victim dismounted and walked towards the building, one of the attackers approached and opened fire at close range before escaping on the motorbike. CCTV footage has captured the moment of the attack, showing two men, one in a grey hooded sweatshirt riding the motorbike and the other, the gunman, in a black jacket and wearing a half-face helmet. The footage, however, does not show the vehicle’s licence plate, prompting police to collect further video evidence from nearby streets to trace their escape route. Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Pol Maj Gen Napasin Phunsawat visited the scene alongside senior investigators and convened a brief meeting to coordinate efforts. He later revealed that the victim had only recently been released from prison three months prior, after serving time for multiple theft convictions in Din Daeng and Samut Prakan. He was unemployed and living with relatives in the Sukhaphiban 5 area. Thossaphon previously worked as a supervisor at the snooker club and had connections in the neighbourhood, including a girlfriend who is reportedly still employed nearby. Police are working on four possible motives: unresolved conflicts from his criminal past, disputes before or after his release from prison, issues involving romantic relationships, and gambling-related tensions. Pol Maj Gen Napasin described the attack as a premeditated act, suggesting a “targeted hit” consistent with the methods of professional gunmen. The assailants were seen circling the area once before entering the snooker club. Upon failing to locate their intended target, they spotted the victim, called his name, and executed the shooting with calculated precision. Pol Maj Gen Somkuan Phuengsap, another deputy commissioner overseeing investigations, also inspected the crime scene, though he did not provide further details to the media. The case remains under active investigation as police intensify efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-04.

Dara Dhevi Spa Fire “Unnatural”, Claims Chiang Mai Hotel Executive Pictures courtesy of Khoasod. A senior executive of the Dara Dhevi Hotel in Chiang Mai has described the recent fire that destroyed the resort’s disused spa complex as “unnatural” and insists that the damage accounts for only a small fraction of the overall property. Pictures courtesy of Khoasod. A senior executive of the Dara Dhevi Hotel in Chiang Mai has described the recent fire that destroyed the resort’s disused spa complex as “unnatural” and insists that the damage accounts for only a small fraction of the overall property. Mr Suphan Setthapanich, Director of Siam Estate Dara Dhevi Co. Ltd., the current owner of the hotel, held a press conference at the hotel’s Kad Kham restaurant on 2 May to address public concern following the blaze. The fire occurred in the early hours of 23 April, gutting all seven buildings that made up the “Deva Spa”, a largely wooden complex that had been out of use for around seven years. According to Mr Suphan, his company legally acquired the front section of the 150-rai estate, totalling around 80 rai, at auction in late 2023 for approximately 2.4 billion baht. The remainder of the land, including the area housing much of the hotel’s utility infrastructure, is still owned by another firm, Global One, which was originally responsible for establishing the luxury resort. Addressing the fire, Mr Suphan said he personally believes it to have been caused by unnatural means, as the affected buildings had been without electrical power for years. Power was only supplied to the exterior area for minimal lighting, with all internal circuits isolated by breakers. He also noted that the spa buildings were constructed using reinforced cement board, steel framing, and hardwood, materials not easily set alight. Adding to the suspicion, local residents, security personnel, and firefighters reported hearing what sounded like explosions, at least 16 in total, during the fire. Despite the dramatic images of the blaze, Mr Suphan stressed that only 5–10% of the total property was affected. As the spa had long been closed to the public, no guests or services were impacted, and the remainder of the hotel continues to operate as normal. He admitted, however, that the emotional toll was significant, particularly as the spa was a symbolic part of the resort. Mr Suphan also confirmed that the damaged buildings were not covered by insurance. He explained that insurers had declined to provide coverage due to the buildings being out of operation, despite the company’s desire to insure the property. When asked whether arson could be a factor, Mr Suphan declined to speculate, stating that it was a matter for the authorities to determine. He did assert, however, that the company stood to gain nothing from the incident. He concluded by expressing his gratitude to the emergency services, neighbouring residents, business partners, and especially Mr Suchet Suwanmongkol, founder of Global One and the original developer of the Dara Dhevi Hotel, for his messages of concern and support. Mr Suphan added that both parties remain committed to working together to restore the property to its former glory. Picture courtesy of Daily News. A dramatic fire broke out in the early hours of 3 May, at a beachfront resort café in Cha-am, sending tourists fleeing in panic as flames rapidly engulfed the kitchen, café, and adjacent guest accommodation. The incident occurred at around 01.00 at the More Than Beach & Café resort, located on Bang Ket beach in Bang Kao subdistrict, Cha-am district, Phetchaburi province. Pol. Sub-Lt. Sikkharet Nora of Cha-am Police Station responded to the emergency call and coordinated with fire units from Cha-am Municipality and Bang Kao Subdistrict. Four fire engines were dispatched to the scene. The blaze began in the kitchen area and quickly spread to the café, both situated right by the beach. Firefighters battled intense flames for approximately 30 minutes before successfully bringing the situation under control. By then, the kitchen, café, coffee machines, electrical appliances, and all related equipment had been completely destroyed. A nearby guest room also fell victim to the fire. More than 10 tourists were staying at the resort at the time. Fortunately, all managed to evacuate safely without injuries, though one group lost personal belongings and valuables in the fire. Authorities cordoned off the affected area and barred access to ensure public safety. Forensic experts from Phetchaburi province inspected the site later to determine the exact cause of the blaze. Preliminary estimates put the damage at no less than 600,000 baht. The resort owner has made arrangements for the displaced guests, securing alternative accommodation for them while they recover from the ordeal. One tourist recounted the frightening experience, saying he and his girlfriend had travelled from Bangkok for a relaxing holiday. “We were inside our room when we heard a loud noise. I opened the door and saw the kitchen on fire. We ran out immediately without taking anything. Soon after, the flames reached our room and everything was gone.” Investigations are ongoing. Power Outage in Spain and Portugal Sparks Energy Security Debate in Thailand Picture courtesy of Matichon. A prolonged power outage that left large parts of Spain and Portugal without electricity for hours has raised concerns about energy stability in countries increasingly dependent on renewable sources. Trirat Sirichantaropas, CEO of New Energy Plus Solutions and former deputy secretary-general of the Thai Sang Thai Party, addressed the issue in a social media post, questioning whether a similar incident could occur in Thailand. Picture courtesy of Matichon. The blackout caused widespread disruption across the Iberian Peninsula. Residential areas, hospitals, schools, train stations, and airports were all affected, leading to significant economic losses. Mr Trirat, an advocate for clean energy, explained that both Spain and Portugal are leaders in renewable energy adoption in Europe, with over 60 gigawatts of renewable capacity, including 27 GW from wind and 18 GW from solar. While this transition helps combat climate change and reduces energy costs, he highlighted a crucial downside: the instability of renewable energy sources. “Renewables such as solar and wind are largely dependent on natural conditions, sunshine and wind, which are unpredictable,” he said. “Without sufficient backup power from stable sources like gas or hydroelectric plants, the system becomes vulnerable.” Citing a Reuters report, he noted that just before the outage, Spain’s power mix consisted of 59% solar, 12% wind, 11% nuclear, and 5% combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT). Unexpectedly, solar power generation dropped by more than 50% in just five minutes, from 18 GW to 8 GW, for reasons that remain unclear. Backup systems were insufficient to cope with the sudden shortfall, causing grid frequency to drop from the standard 50 Hz to 49.85 Hz. This triggered an automatic shutdown of numerous devices and systems, plunging millions into darkness. Could this happen in Thailand? Mr Trirat reassured that such a scenario is unlikely in the Kingdom. “Thailand’s power generation is still heavily reliant on stable sources like gas, coal, and oil, which account for about 90% of our mix, with renewables making up only 10%,” he said. “Our energy system is among the most robust in the region, and security of supply remains a top priority.” However, he cautioned against complacency. As Thailand gradually transitions towards a greater reliance on renewable energy, it is essential to balance this with adequate backup capacity. Without it, the country could one day face similar vulnerabilities. “The lesson here is not to avoid renewables, but to manage them wisely. Energy transition must be accompanied by planning and infrastructure that can ensure stability, even in unforeseen circumstances,” he concluded. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-05-04.

The contraband, smuggled into the country from Trinidad and Tobago and falsely declared as “dry fish”, was intercepted at Suvarnabhumi Airport’s bonded warehouse on May 1st. Mr. Phanthong Loykulnanta, Tax and Revenue Development Adviser and spokesperson for the Customs Department, confirmed that the operation was a joint effort involving the Department of Fisheries, the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division (NRECD), and Thai Airways. It followed intelligence received from China’s Anti-Smuggling Bureau (ASB), under the General Administration of China Customs, warning that a suspicious consignment possibly in breach of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) was en route to Thailand. The shipment originated in Trinidad and Tobago and transited through China before arriving in Thailand. Upon inspection, officials discovered 402 shark fins weighing approximately 102 kilograms, including packaging. The importation of such items is strictly regulated due to conservation concerns and public health laws. According to Thai Customs, the importer violated multiple laws, including: • The Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act (B.E. 2562), for importing protected wildlife parts without permission. • The Animal Epidemics Act (B.E. 2558), for importing animal remains without authorisation. • The Fisheries Royal Ordinance (B.E. 2558), for lacking necessary certification for aquatic animal products. • The Customs Act (B.E. 2560), for importing restricted goods without a permit. The seized shark fins have been taken as evidence under Sections 166 and 167 of the Customs Act. The case has been handed over to investigators at Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station for legal proceedings. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating illegal wildlife trade and protecting endangered marine species. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-04.

Authorities in the capital revealed that Khamkrit Naksuthi, 33, was apprehended on May 3, following two separate burglary incidents within a one-month span at the Passorn 5 village on Kallapapruek Road. The arrest followed an operation by the Bangkok Metropolitan Police’s Crime Suppression Division, who had been investigating the series of thefts after reports from victims. Naksuthi, who resides nearby in Kallapapruek 4, initially worked as a driver for a ride-sharing service. Police say he exploited his access to the village by posing as a driver entering the area to pick up passengers, allowing him to bypass security. Once inside the village, Naksuthi would inspect various homes, looking for empty properties. When he found one, he would break in and steal valuables. Police tracked down the suspect after gathering evidence, which led to an arrest warrant being issued on May 1, 2025. On May 2, officers raided Naksuthi’s home and discovered a silver Toyota Altis vehicle and various items, including clothing, that were believed to have been stolen. However, Naksuthi was not at home at the time. Later police successfully located him and arrested him with a Honda Wave motorcycle, also suspected to be linked to the crimes. Naksuthi has a prior record for similar thefts, with at least two previous offences. Authorities have urged residents of luxury homes and other neighbourhoods to be vigilant and consider installing CCTV systems to protect against similar incidents. Police are encouraging any victims of similar crimes, particularly those who may have been targeted by a suspect using the same vehicle, to come forward and identify any stolen items. The case is ongoing, with Naksuthi facing charges for nighttime burglary under the law. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-04.

Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A 24-year-old man has died following a road crash in Kui Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan, after the truck he was driving crashed at high speed into the back of a ten-wheeled truck, triggering a chain reaction that damaged two more vehicles at a red light. The incident occurred on the northbound side of Phetkasem Road at the Kui Buri intersection around 21:30 on 2 May. Pol Sub-Lt Buncha Sukkorong of Kui Buri Police Station responded to the scene, accompanied by emergency personnel from Wat Kui Buri Rescue Foundation and paramedics from Kui Buri Hospital. At the scene, a ten-wheeled Hino lorry (registration from Bangkok) was found with damage to its rear bumper, which had been pushed inward by the impact. The driver suffered only minor injuries. Behind the lorry was a black Suzuki sedan (registration from Bangkok), its rear end crumpled from the collision. Fortunately, there were no injuries in this vehicle. To the left, on the roadside, a bronze Nissan pickup truck (registration from Phetchaburi) was found with rear-end damage. It had been carrying a load of miscellaneous goods. Two passengers inside the pickup sustained minor injuries. Further back, the most severe damage was observed on a six-wheeled truck, which had a second truck loaded on its rear platform. The front end of the truck was crushed, and the driver, later identified as Mr Prasit, 24, from Thung Song district in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, was found trapped in the wreckage, crying out in pain. Rescue teams had to use hydraulic cutters to free Mr Prasit from the mangled cab. His left ankle had been crushed and severed due to the impact. Despite emergency treatment and rapid transport to Kui Buri Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries due to massive blood loss. Eyewitnesses stated that the Suzuki sedan and the Nissan pickup were stopped side by side at the red light, with the ten-wheeled lorry behind them. Mr Prasit’s truck, reportedly travelling at high speed, slammed into the lorry, causing it to lurch forward and crash into the two smaller vehicles before coming to rest against the central divider. The truck remained stationary at the point of impact, with the driver fatally trapped inside. Police have documented the incident and are conducting further investigations in accordance with procedures. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-04.

Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A woman has been left deeply traumatised after discovering she had unknowingly shared a bed for two nights with the body of her deceased sister. The incident took place in a single-storey house in Moo 3, Bang Samak subdistrict, Bang Pakong district, Chachoengsao province. At approximately 19:30 on 2 May, police were alerted to the presence of a deceased individual inside the home. Responding to the call, Pol. Sub Lt. Noppadon Taweechart of Bang Pakong Police Station and rescue workers from Chachoengsao Rescue Unit found the body of a 56-year-old woman, identified only as Ms. Chiraporn. She was discovered lying face-up on the bed, wearing only underwear. Her body had begun to emit a foul odour, and authorities estimate she had been dead for about two days. There were no visible signs of injury or signs of a struggle in the room. Ms. Bualoy, 59, the elder sister of the deceased, explained that her sibling was disabled and they live together in the house. Ms. Bualoy, who works full-time, would usually return home in the evenings and share dinner with her sister. The last conversation they had was on Wednesday. On Thursday evening, she saw her sister lying in bed and assumed she was asleep, so did not wake her for dinner. The following morning, she left for work again without disturbing her. It was not until she returned home on Friday evening and noticed a strong smell that she turned on the lights and was horrified to discover her sister had passed away. She immediately contacted the authorities. Police conducted a preliminary examination and recorded the scene as evidence. The body has since been sent to the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Investigations are ongoing, and the family will be contacted for further funeral arrangements. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-04.

Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Police have arrested eight individuals believed to be part of a criminal syndicate distributing illegal electronic cigarettes known as “Zombie Vapes” or “Pod K,” which contain a powerful anaesthetic. Assets worth over 16 million baht have been seized in connection with the case. Under the direction of Police Lieutenant General Jiraphop Phuridech, officers from the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) led by Police Major General Pattanachak Bupphasuwan and senior investigators carried out the arrests. The suspects include Thai nationals and one Singaporean citizen: Mr. Sakdachot (23), Mr. Jirawat (19), Ms. Athicha (20), Mr. Natthaphon (33), Ms. Benja (38), Mr. Phanuwat (37), Mr. Lon (37, Singaporean), and Ms. Siwaphon (34). The group faces charges under Thai law prohibiting the sale, production, and distribution of electronic cigarettes and related substances. One individual, identified as Neo Ming, a foreign national, was also found to be residing in the country illegally. During the raid, police confiscated 33 vape cartridges containing the illicit “Pod K” blend, along with luxury items, gold jewellery, land title deeds, a vehicle, and large sums of cash. The total value of the seized property is estimated at 15,779,836 baht. According to authorities, these e-cigarettes were being marketed to nightlife tourists and were found to contain etomidate, a short-acting anaesthetic used medically for minor surgeries. When inhaled, etomidate can severely depress the central nervous system, leading to respiratory distress, unconsciousness, or even death in high doses. “This substance can cause cardiac failure or a complete loss of consciousness, but generally making the user appear like a walking zombie,” said Pol. Maj. Gen. Pattanachak. “The danger posed by this drug-laced vape is severe, and we acted swiftly to track down all those involved.” Four of the suspects, Mr. Sakdachot, Mr. Jirawat, Ms. Athicha, and Mr. Natthaphon, have confessed. Mr. Natthaphon admitted to acting as a middleman, sourcing orders and arranging delivery through Mr. Lon and Ms. Benja, with sales conducted via bank transfers.
