Four Chinese nationals have been arrested in connection with a burglary in Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, where a Canadian woman’s home was broken into and a safe containing assets worth over 600,000 baht was stolen. At a press conference held on the morning of 5 August, at Pak Kret Police Station, officers announced the arrest of four suspects at a residence in Lat Krabang, Bangkok. The suspects, identified only as Mr. A (35), Mr. B (48), Mr. Li (34), and Mr. V (37), are all Chinese nationals. Police recovered a large cache of evidence including: • Two motorcycles • Clothing allegedly worn during the burglary • A blue motorcycle helmet • Two Tag Heuer watches • Thai banknotes totalling 20,000 baht (in 1,000 baht denominations) • 121 Turkish lira banknotes (200 denomination) • 64 Syrian banknotes (5,000 denomination) • Eight mobile phones • Numerous tools believed to have been used in the break-in The investigation was launched after the homeowner, Ms. Zhu, a Canadian citizen, reported to Pak Kret Police on 30 July that her safe had been stolen while she and her family were away on a trip to Koh Samui. Upon returning home, she discovered the safe missing from her office on the second floor. It reportedly contained cash and important documents with an estimated total value of 600,000 baht. Police reviewed CCTV footage, which showed a group of male intruders scaling a side fence and entering the home at around 19:00 on 26 July. The suspects were later seen fleeing with the stolen items on a motorcycle. Further footage traced their movements to a house in Lat Krabang, from where they departed at approximately 15:23 and returned at 21:53 using a different motorcycle. The suspects face multiple charges including: • Night-time theft using a vehicle to aid in the crime or escape • Receiving stolen property One suspect, Mr. B, faces an additional charge of illegal entry into the Kingdom of Thailand. Immigration Bureau officers have confirmed that the suspects have a history of frequent travel in and out of Thailand under the guise of tourism. Authorities are now investigating whether they may be linked to similar crimes in other areas. The suspects have been handed over to investigators at Pak Kret Police Station and the case is now being coordinated with Immigration Division 1 for further legal proceedings. The blaze tore through the Yi Nguan Hotel, located in a soi behind Saraburi railway station, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Police Lieutenant Colonel Paitoon Phankluaymai of Mueang Saraburi Police Station received the fire report at 22:20. Emergency responders from the Saraburi Municipality Fire Department, rescue volunteers from Sawang Rattanatrai and over ten fire engines were swiftly deployed to the scene. Saraburi Mayor Dr. Panupong Tipyaset was among the first officials to arrive, overseeing the operation as flames engulfed the two-storey building made from a combination of concrete and timber. The fire reportedly began near the ground-floor bathroom of Room 7 before spreading rapidly through the wooden structure, which served as excellent fuel for the flames. As the blaze intensified, firefighters used hydraulic platforms, to attack the fire from above while others accessed the neighbouring Saraburi Post Office compound to extinguish the fire from the rear. After more than an hour and half of intense effort, the fire was brought under control, though the building was left gutted. Saraburi Deputy Governor Lertchai Sakonsaowapak, Mueang Saraburi District Chief Attakarn Jittawil and Provincial Disaster Prevention Chief Wattana Phong Wongkitchalert also attended the scene, offering support and overseeing emergency measures. Mayor Panupong confirmed the fire had been contained and praised the cooperation among agencies. He noted that the building, with its aged wooden upper floor, was highly susceptible to fire. He estimated the structure’s age at around 50 years. A woman sustained minor injuries during the incident, reportedly due to panic rather than burns or smoke inhalation. Firefighters remained on-site to damp down remaining hot spots and inspect the ruins. Forensic investigators are expected to begin examining the scene to determine the exact cause of the blaze. One witness, a local man operating a photocopy shop at the corner of the building, said he was alerted by a friend while staying at a nearby residence. “I rushed back and saw the fire had already reached the upper floor,” he recounted. “It quickly spread to other rooms.” The cause of the fire remains unclear, with local residents saying they did not witness the initial ignition. Damage assessments are ongoing. Adapted by Asean Now from Khoasod 2025-08-06

  5. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A Hungarian woman on holiday in Phuket gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Coconut Island, in a dramatic and heartwarming turn of events assisted by local rescue volunteers. The birth occurred around 21:00 on 4 August, after the Kusoldham Foundation in Phuket received an urgent call reporting that a heavily pregnant foreign woman was experiencing labour pains on Coconut Island, part of the Koh Kaew subdistrict in Mueang Phuket District. Immediate assistance was requested to transport her to the mainland via Laem Hin Pier. A team of rescue volunteers took approximately 15 minutes by boat to reach the island. Upon arrival, they found the expectant mother, identified as 39-year-old Mrs Ancrea from Hungary, already in advanced labour. Her contractions were frequent, her cervix had begun to dilate and her waters had broken, making it clear that delivery was imminent. Given the urgency, the team determined there was no time to transport her before the birth. Instead, they assisted her in delivering the baby boy on-site. The newborn was healthy and fully developed and both mother and child were reported to be in good condition. Following the successful delivery, the rescue team called ahead for an EMS Advanced ambulance to wait at Laem Hin Pier. They then carefully transported the new mother and baby by boat back to the mainland, where they were safely transferred to Bangkok Hospital Phuket for further medical care and observation. The assault, which took place in the village of Sawang Makka, Don Han Subdistrict, Mueang Khon Kaen District, was captured on video and has caused widespread outrage online. The video footage shows the suspect, identified as Mr Lop, confronting the boy as he was walking past his house on his way to visit an older friend. Without provocation, Mr Lop threatened the boy with a knife approximately 30 centimetres long, struck him, and then pursued him into a nearby house. He slashed the boy at the back of the neck, causing heavy bleeding and knocking him to the ground. After the assault, Mr Lop can be seen putting away the weapon and then kicking the person filming the incident. Bystanders quickly intervened to stop further violence. Police Colonel Prateep Panyowat, Superintendent of Tha Phra Police Station, confirmed that the boy’s family filed a police report following the attack. Officers apprehended Mr Lop on 4 August and seized the knife as evidence. He has been charged with unlawful entry into a dwelling while armed, assault causing injury and carrying a weapon in public without just cause. Mr Lop reportedly confessed to all charges and has been handed over to the court for prosecution. Neighbours described Mr Lop as a hot-tempered man known for his aggressive behaviour. Several residents claimed he often became irritated with local children and that this violent act was triggered by his annoyance. Despite being taken into custody, witnesses say the suspect has shown no remorse and even issued threats to others in the community, vowing retaliation once he is released. The young victim is recovering from his injuries, while community members are calling for stricter measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Adapted by Asean Now from SiamNews 2025-08-06

  9. Picture courtesy of Naewna. A Buddhist monk has been arrested in Pathum Thani for allegedly being involved in an illegal money-lending operation, yet continues to deny the charges and refuses to disrobe. The operation was part of a nationwide crackdown on criminal suspects hiding in temples, ordered by Police Lieutenant General Jiraphop Phuridech, Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), who also leads the Centre for the Prevention and Suppression of Threats to Buddhism. The large-scale operation, conducted by the CIB, targeted over 200 locations across Thailand to apprehend individuals involved in various criminal activities. Officers from Division 3 of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission Police (PACC) were dispatched to arrest Phra Woraphot, also known as Mr Woraphot Sathitwatthana, at a temple in Moo 4, Bang Duea Subdistrict, Pathum Thani Province. The arrest was made under a warrant issued by the Mae Sariang Provincial Court in Mae Hong Son Province. The charges relate to the unauthorised provision of personal loans with high interest rates. According to Police Sub-Lieutenant Charan Kueama, who led the arrest, the suspect continues to deny the allegations and insists he has never even visited Mae Hong Son. Phra Woraphot also refused to disrobe and was subsequently taken to Mueang Pathum Thani Police Station for official documentation before being transferred to CIB headquarters. In his statement, Woraphot maintained his innocence, claiming that before ordaining, he had worked as a welder and had no connection to the alleged offences. His mother, Mrs Wannee, 68, defended her son, stating he has been a monk for three rainy seasons and that she relies on the food he collects on alms rounds each morning to feed herself and her husband, who suffered a stroke. She pleaded for mercy, saying, “If anyone is trying to harm my son, may karma fall upon them.” As investigations continue, police are working to verify the monk’s claims and gather further evidence. Authorities are also intensifying efforts to root out criminal networks exploiting monastic life as a cover for illegal operations. A 31-year-old man has been arrested by paramilitary officers near the Thai-Cambodian border in Aranyaprathet district while transporting 1,200 bottles of cough syrup suspected to be destined for illicit drug production. On 4 August, officials from the First Army Region’s Public Relations Centre and Burapha Task Force reported that a joint security operation was conducted by the Aranyaprathet Task Force, Ranger Company 1206, Infantry Battalion 1 of the King’s Guard, local police from Khlong Nam Sai Police Station, public health officials and district authorities. The team set up a crime prevention checkpoint in Ban Kud Hin, Moo 4, Khlong Nam Sai Subdistrict, Aranyaprathet District. During the operation, they stopped a suspicious silver Isuzu D-MAX pickup truck, licence plate from Sa Kaeo, carrying several cardboard boxes in the back. The driver was identified as Mr. Wanpichit Chaiyasarn, 31, a resident of Moo 1, Phan Suek Subdistrict, Aranyaprathet. Upon inspection, officers discovered six large boxes containing a total of 1,200 bottles of DATISSIN-brand cough syrup. Mr. Wanpichit admitted that he had collected the cough syrup from a local teenager in Khlong Nam Sai and was on his way to deliver it to Phan Suek Subdistrict. He claimed he was paid just 1,000 baht by a man known only as “Mr. Somchai” to make the delivery. He denied knowing Somchai’s full identity. Authorities suspect that the syrup was intended to be used as an ingredient in the production of illegal narcotic mixtures, such as kratom cocktails and the popular street drug “4x100”, which are commonly sold in the area. Mr. Wanpichit was taken to Khlong Nam Sai Police Station for further questioning, where officials plan to expand the investigation to identify and apprehend others involved in the smuggling operation. The crackdown highlights ongoing efforts by border security forces to stem the flow of controlled substances and drug-related materials across provincial and international borders. 17. Picture courtesy of NBT A Malaysian tourist has been arrested just two hours after allegedly stealing over 30,000 baht in cash from a bag shop near a popular tourist attraction in Betong district, Yala province. On 4 August, Pol. Lt. Col. Pornchai Choonuan, an investigator from Betong Police Station, received a report of a theft at a bag shop located near the Piyamit Tunnel in Moo 2, Tano Maero Subdistrict. The tunnel is a well-known historical site frequented by both Thai and international tourists. According to the shop owner, 74-year-old Yuk-Jen Sae-Jen, the theft occurred around noon. She explained that while she was attending to customers outside her shop who were interested in buying durian, she left her handbag containing more than 30,000 baht inside the shop. Upon returning, she discovered the bag missing. CCTV footage revealed a foreign woman, dressed in black with long trousers and trainers, entering the shop from the side and taking the bag. She later discarded it under a durian tree about 50 metres from the shop. Ms Yuk-Jen’s daughter reported the theft to local police. Pol. Col. Jirawat Duding, Superintendent of Betong Police Station, immediately ordered a response. Investigators led by Pol. Lt. Col. Rusman Deenamor and Pol. Lt. Col. Phongsak Khunbanteng reviewed surveillance footage and coordinated with immigration officers to prevent the suspect from fleeing the country. Within two hours, officers located and arrested the suspect, 55-year-old Yeo Kim Lian, at a traditional Thai massage parlour in central Betong. She was found in possession of cash totalling around 38,000 baht, in both Thai and Malaysian currency. During interrogation, Yeo admitted to the crime. She had arrived in Betong the day before with a group of friends and hired a tuk-tuk for sightseeing. Upon arriving at the Piyamit Tunnel, she separated from her group and noticed the elderly shopkeeper was alone, prompting her to seize the opportunity to steal the bag. She has been charged and will face legal proceedings in accordance with the law. Adapted by Asean Now from NBT 2025-08-06

  19. Picture courtesy of Naewna. Security forces in Chiang Rai have seized 2.5 million methamphetamine pills near the Mekong River border in Chiang Saen district, in what is believed to be part of a major cross-border drug trafficking operation. On the night of 4 August, at approximately 23:00, officers from Narcotics Suppression Operation Unit 32, under the Third Narcotics Suppression Command (NSOU 32), in coordination with the Internal Security Operations Division and local administrative officials from Chiang Saen district, acted on intelligence regarding a drug trafficking attempt. Authorities had received a tip-off that a large quantity of meth pills would be smuggled across the Mekong River from a neighbouring country into Thailand. The drugs were then expected to be transported along rural roads to storage locations before being moved further into the country. Security personnel launched a coordinated patrol and surveillance operation, focusing on key rural roads in the area. During their sweep, they discovered a suspicious pile of ten sacks hidden among tall grass along a roadside in Ban San That, Moo 4, Yonok Subdistrict, around 6 to 7 kilometres from the Mekong River. The sacks had been carefully concealed with branches and foliage, but no suspects were present at the scene. Upon inspection, each sack was found to contain approximately 250,000 methamphetamine pills, totalling around 2.5 million pills. Officials believe the traffickers abandoned the drugs upon realising they were being monitored and fled the scene. All seized narcotics have been handed over to Chiang Saen Police Station as evidence. Authorities are now expanding their investigation to identify and apprehend those involved in the smuggling operation. The seizure marks yet another significant blow to transnational drug networks operating along Thailand’s northern border. Adapted by Asean Now from Naewna 2025-08-06

  20. DSI Investigates Land Dispute in Buriram Picture courtesy of Komchadluek. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has requested official records from four state agencies in its ongoing investigation into the controversial land ownership claims surrounding the Khao Kradong area in Buriram Province. 21. Picture courtesy of Komchadluek. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has requested official records from four state agencies in its ongoing investigation into the controversial land ownership claims surrounding the Khao Kradong area in Buriram Province. The case, which may involve state land, has raised concerns about possible criminal offences, including money laundering. The probe stems from a formal complaint by Kusumalavadee Sirikomut, a former senatorial candidate, who questioned the legality of land claims made by certain individuals and groups in the area. The DSI’s investigation team, assigned to case no. 97/2568, convened on 4 August, to assess the matter and coordinate with relevant agencies, including the Department of Lands, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), and Buriram provincial authorities. Preliminary findings reveal that on 27 May 1955, the SRT registered its possession of approximately 5,083 rai of land in the area under the Sor Kor 1 (S.K.1) system, based on its occupation of the land prior to the enforcement of the Land Code on 1 December 1954. The basis for the SRT’s claim lies in a 1921 Royal Decree designating the area for railway construction, a decree which effectively restricted public land use. The land was declared under S.K.1 no. 1180, with local officials acknowledging the SRT’s long-standing use and occupation of the area. However, investigators have now discovered that other individuals in the same region have also filed S.K.1 declarations, potentially overlapping with the SRT’s claim. Under Section 5 of the Land Code Act, S.K.1 declarations do not automatically grant land ownership rights. Moreover, Section 10 prohibits the issuance of land title deeds for public domain or reserved land, including areas protected under earlier legislation such as the 1935 Act on the Preservation of Vacant Public Lands. Accordingly, any land plots within the boundaries claimed by the SRT cannot legally be titled unless claimants can prove they held superior possession rights predating the 1921 Royal Decree. The investigation further revealed that in June 1987, the SRT attempted to convert its S.K.1 documents into full land title deeds. Thirteen parcels of land covering 477 rai were successfully titled, while the remainder remain under dispute, pending resolution at the Buriram Land Office. Official land office records now bear notices warning that any land rights documents within the disputed area may be subject to cancellation, amendment or revocation. Any parties proceeding with land transactions must be informed of this potential risk and record their acknowledgement accordingly. One notable discovery in the case is a single legal entity currently holding over 400 rai of land within the SRT’s claimed area. If it is proven that this entity or others involved have unlawfully obtained land documents or engaged in illegal possession or exploitation of the land, particularly if the land is classified as a natural resource, they could face charges under anti-money laundering laws. This includes commercial misuse of natural resources and may also implicate state officials across various departments. The DSI has affirmed that further legal action will be taken in accordance with its mandate, as it works to unravel what could be a significant case involving land fraud and misuse of public property. A 55-year-old man has been arrested after violently attacking his neighbour with a machete, nearly severing his arm at the wrist, following a dispute over loud behaviour while drinking. Police from Tha Ta Fang Station were called to a rented house along the Mae Sariang–Mae Sam Laep road in Ban Chom Kitti, Moo 13, Mae Yuam subdistrict, Mae Sariang district, Mae Hong Son. The suspect, identified only as “Mr. A,” was found intoxicated and in possession of a machete. He was promptly detained at the scene. According to Pol. Lt. Papaspong Kaewrakmuk, the investigating officer, Mr. A became enraged after a neighbour, 34-year-old “Mr. B,” politely asked him to lower his voice while he was drinking loudly in the middle of the day. In a sudden burst of anger, Mr. A grabbed a machete and slashed at Mr. B, causing severe injuries to his left wrist. Despite the brutal attack, the suspect returned to drinking as if nothing had happened. He was later taken into custody while attempting to flee the area. Village headman Mr. Wipoon Kawon confirmed that the suspect was known for his aggressive behaviour while drunk and had caused disturbances in the neighbourhood on several previous occasions. Mr. B was taken to Mae Sariang Hospital for treatment. Police have charged Mr. A with armed trespassing and assault and further legal proceedings are underway. 25. Picture courtesy of ThaiRath. In a heartbreaking discovery, a woman was found dead outside her home while her elderly, bedridden husband remained inside unaware, having gone without food or water for two days. Police from Rong Kwang Police Station, Phrae, were alerted to the incident at 10:40 on 5 August after local village headman Mr Morakot Kabbua of Thung Si Subdistrict received a report of an unexplained death at a residence along the Phrae–Rong Kwang road. Officers, along with rescue workers from the Phetkasem Foundation and district officials, arrived at the scene in Moo 5, Thung Si. There, they found the body of Mrs Wasana Rueanngam, 68, known affectionately in the village as “Auntie Nim”, lying lifeless near the front doorway of the home. The area was overgrown with weeds and a wooden bed stood nearby. On it was a half-finished bottle of homemade rice whisky. No signs of struggle or foul play were found. Inside the house, police discovered Mr Somboon 70, the deceased woman’s husband, in a frail and emaciated condition. He is severely disabled and unable to move without assistance. Unaware that his wife had died outside, he had been left alone without food or care for more than 48 hours. Shocked neighbours rushed to provide him with food and water. According to Mrs Dao Miwanpia 56, a neighbour, villagers had visited the house that morning intending to donate money to the couple. The funds were surplus from a funeral recently held in the village and locals wanted to offer support to Mr Somboon, who is known to be impoverished and entirely dependent on his wife. When no one responded to calls at the door, villagers entered and were horrified to find Mrs Wasana’s body outside the rear of the property. They immediately alerted community leaders and contacted police. Initial investigations suggest the cause of death may be related to chronic health conditions. Mrs Wasana was known to be a frequent drinker and the whisky bottle found nearby points to possible alcohol-related complications. It is believed she collapsed suddenly while outside and was unable to call for help. The couple’s only son reportedly died some years ago, and villagers had since taken it upon themselves to help in small ways, delivering food after community events and offering support when possible. Mr Somboon has now been taken into care and local officials have pledged to ensure he receives proper assistance going forward. Adapted by Asean Now from ThaiRath 2025-08-06
