UPDATE What we know so far after Air India flight heading to London Gatwick crashes Pictures courtesy of BBC. An Air India passenger plane bound for London Gatwick crashed shortly after taking off in Ahmedabad, western India on Thursday 12 June. More than 240 people were on board the flight when it was involved in what the airline has called a "tragic accident". Details are still emerging from the scene. Here is what is known so far. When and where did plane crash? Air India flight AI171 left Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 13:39 local time (08:09 GMT), Air India said. It was scheduled to land at London Gatwick at 18:25 BST. The plane crashed on departure from Ahmedabad - where all operations have since been suspended. According to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, the signal from the aircraft was lost "less than a minute after take-off". Flight tracking data ends with the plane at an altitude of 625ft (190m). The plane gave a mayday call to air traffic control, India's aviation regulator said. No response was given by the aircraft after that. It crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar. Police told ANI news agency that it had crashed into a doctors' hostel. Verified footage taken in central Ahmedabad showed huge plumes of black smoke in the sky. The BBC's Roxy Gagdekar said people near the scene were running to "save as many lives as possible". He said emergency services were involved in a rescue operation and trying to extinguish a fire, and described seeing bodies being taken from the area. There has been no official confirmation yet on the number of casualties. Who was on board? There were 242 passengers and crew members on board, according to Air India. Among the passengers were 53 British nationals, 169 Indian nationals, one Canadian national and seven Portuguese nationals. The aircraft - a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner - had a total of 256 seats on board. Air India said the injured were being taken to the nearest hospitals. Officials have been instructed to carry out "immediate rescue and relief operations" and to make arrangements on a "war footing," the chief minister of Gujarat said. Air India's chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran said an "emergency centre has been activated" and a support team put in place for families seeking information. What have the airline and authorities said? Air India confirmed on X that the flight was "involved in an accident today after take-off". It said it was fully co-operating with authorities investigating the crash and would provide further updates and has set up a dedicated passenger hotline to provide further information: 1800 5691 444 The airline's chairman, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, said in a statement: "We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted." A spokesperson for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport said all operations had been suspended until further notice, and they advised passengers to check with their airline before travelling to the airport. India's aviation minister said he had directed "all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action". Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjaparu added on X: "Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site." How have India reacted? India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "stunned and saddened" by the crash. "It is heartbreaking beyond words," he said in a statement on X, adding he had been in touch with officials assisting those affected. Adapted by Asean Now from BBC News 2025-06-12 -

Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A Chinese national alleged to be a member of a notorious call centre scam gang was arrested in Pattaya, as he was withdrawing nearly one million baht from an ATM machine. On 11 June, Pol. Col. Anek Srathongyu, Superintendent of Pattaya City Police Station, led a joint operation involving the Chonburi Provincial Investigation Unit and the Cross-Border Crime Suppression Task Force. The operation executed an arrest warrant issued by Pattaya Provincial Court against Mr Zhu Jiagen, 29, a Chinese citizen. Mr Zhu faces multiple charges, including membership of a secret society (known locally as “ang yi”), conspiracy to defraud the public, inputting false data into a computer system with intent to deceive, conspiracy to commit money laundering and direct involvement in money laundering activities. Police apprehended the suspect outside a convenience store near Bang Lamung Temple, located in Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province. At the time of arrest, Mr Zhu was in possession of 951,000 baht in cash, all in 1,000 baht notes, as well as bank withdrawals slips and a white Nissan Teana registered in Bangkok. The arrest followed an extensive surveillance operation. Investigators had tracked Mr Zhu to the area after receiving intelligence that he had taken refuge near the temple. Officers lay in wait and moved in as he was withdrawing money from an ATM machine. Mr Zhu is believed to be a key player in an international scam network responsible for defrauding Thai citizens through sophisticated phone-based deception schemes. Authorities are now conducting further investigations and interrogations as part of their crackdown on cross-border organised crime. The suspect is currently in police custody pending legal proceedings. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaodod 2025-06-12

Picture courtesy of Matichon. An incident has unfolded in Saraburi province, where a grandfather’s concern for his granddaughter’s safety led to the discovery of a murder-suicide involving his daughter and son-in-law. At around 16:30 on 11 June, Pol. Lt. Col. Chuchet Anantasalong, Deputy Chief Investigator at Mueang Saraburi Police Station, along with Pol. Lt. Col. Sompong Pomkaset and rescue personnel from the Sawang Rattanatrai Foundation, responded to reports of two fatalities at a residence in Moo 4, Takut Subdistrict, Mueang District, Saraburi. Upon arrival at the two-storey home, police discovered the body of a 45-year-old man, Mr. Sayan, hanging from a ceiling beam. He worked as a local sugarcane juice vendor. Nearby lay the body of his wife, 38-year-old Ms. Wasana, who had suffered multiple deep cuts to her arms, legs, torso and neck. Ms. Wasana was employed at a gift shop in Robinson Lifestyle Mall, Saraburi branch. Investigators noted that the neck wound was so severe it had nearly severed her head. Mr. Sayan’s body had been taken down from the beam by his father, while Ms. Wasana’s body was removed from the house by relatives. According to Mr. Jamnong, the father of Mr. Sayan, “I visit my son regularly. On the morning of the incident, I saw him behind the house preparing sugarcane. He didn’t seem upset or out of sorts.” Mr. Tawee, the father of Ms. Wasana, recounted his own concerns: “In the morning, I was behind my house making fishing nets near the fence. When I came for lunch, I thought it strange that their house was quiet and no one had left for work. But I didn’t suspect anything yet. “At 16:00, I realised no one had picked up my granddaughter from school, which was very unusual. I went to check their house. The back door was locked and the front door was too. I looked through a window and saw my son-in-law hanging from the ceiling. I shouted for help and broke down the door. Inside, I found my daughter on the floor, lifeless, with deep slash wounds. Her head was hanging due to a deep cut in her neck,” he said, visibly distressed. Mr. Tawee added, “I never imagined he would do something like this. He was a kind, calm man who treated us like his own family. He even made Ovaltine for me every morning.” Initial police investigations suggest that Mr. Sayan likely killed his wife before taking his own life. Relatives indicated the couple had ongoing marital issues and that Mr. Sayan had grown increasingly jealous, suspecting his wife of infidelity, though no solid evidence of this has emerged. Pol. Lt. Col. Chuchet stated that forensic officers are continuing to collect evidence at the scene. “We are committed to uncovering the full truth behind this tragedy and will proceed with the investigation in accordance with the law,” he said. Picture courtesy of Matichon. An Austrian man was rushed to a Bangkok hospital after experiencing severe abdominal pain, only for doctors to discover 255 methamphetamine pills inside his body, one of which is believed to have burst from the bag, causing a medical emergency. The incident occurred in the early hours of 11 June, when medical staff at Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in Bangkok were alerted to an emergency case involving a foreign national who had arrived from Don Mueang International Airport. The patient, later identified as Mr. Gantner Wolfgang, 43, an Austrian national, was suffering from seizures and was in visible distress. Upon arrival, doctors conducted an examination and were alarmed to find pink fluid being discharged from the patient’s rectum. A CT scan revealed multiple round-shaped foreign objects inside his intestines. Part of one such object had already dissolved and passed out of his body and was suspected to a narcotic. Medical staff immediately alerted the police. Officers from Hua Mak Police Station, led by Pol Lt Col Wachirawit Kongkraisasit and supervised by senior anti-narcotics officials including Pol Lt Gen Siam Boonsom and Pol Maj Gen Pallop Aermla, responded to the hospital to investigate. Upon examination, police confirmed that the object in question was the remains of a methamphetamine pill. A total of 255 red, round tablets bearing the imprint “WY” were found in a bag, still inside Mr. Gantner’s digestive tract. The pills are classified as a Category 1 narcotic under the law. Medical staff performed surgery to remove the pills. All seized narcotics were handed over to Hua Mak Police investigators, who have launched a formal criminal case against the Austrian national. He will be charged under drug trafficking laws once he recovers and is deemed fit for legal proceedings. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-12

Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A series of swimming incidents has claimed the lives of two foreign tourists in Phuket over the past two days, while a third remains in critical condition. The incidents occurred at popular beaches despite the presence of lifeguards on duty. At approximately 15:50 on 11 June, emergency responders from the Karon Municipality Rescue Unit were alerted by beach lifeguards to a foreign male tourist found unconscious in the waters off Kata Beach. Upon arrival, rescue personnel discovered the man showing no signs of life. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was administered on site. The man was transferred to a hospital ambulance dispatched from Chalong Hospital and transported urgently to the facility. He was identified as Mr. Yevgeniy Keminsky, a 41-year-old national of Kazakhstan. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities at Chalong Police Station launched an investigation and the Kazakh embassy has been informed to assist in repatriating the body. Shortly afterwards, at around 16:00, another incident was reported. Rescue services from the Cherng Talay Subdistrict Administration were summoned to Bang Tao Beach, near Soi Kubor in Thalang District. A foreign female tourist, believed to be approximately 40 years old, had been caught in a rip current. Lifeguards managed to pull her from the surf, where she was found unconscious and without a pulse. Immediate CPR was administered by both lifeguards and fellow tourists before she was transferred to Thalang Hospital. Her current condition is reported as critical. These back-to-back incidents followed another fatality the previous day. On 10 June, a 41-year-old Albanian woman, visiting Phuket for the first time, drowned while swimming with her partner off Karon Beach. Authorities have urged beachgoers to remain vigilant, obey posted safety warnings and be aware of dangerous sea conditions, particularly during the current monsoon season. Picture courtesy of Matichon. A Chinese national holding a Thailand Elite visa has been arrested for illegally operating a full-scale tour service in Bangkok, including car transfers and guided visits to major tourist sites such as the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. On 11 June, police investigators observed suspicious activity involving three vehicles transporting tourists to prominent landmarks including the Grand Palace and Tha Chang Pier. Officers from a special operations unit tracked the movements and confirmed that the suspect was conducting unauthorised tour operations in violation of Thai tourism laws. The suspect, identified only as “Mr B”, a 25-year-old Chinese national, was apprehended at Tha Chang Pier on Maharaj Road. Authorities charged him with operating a tour business without a licence as required under the Tourism Business and Guide Act. He also faces charges for working without a valid work permit and engaging in work beyond the scope permitted under his visa status. Mr B, who entered the country on a Thailand Elite visa, a long-stay visa programme aimed at affluent foreign nationals, had allegedly been running a private tour operation offering high-end experiences for visiting Chinese tourists. This included vehicle transfers and personally guided tours of historic sites in the heart of Bangkok. He was taken into custody and handed over to investigators at Chana Songkhram Police Station for legal proceedings. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illegal tourism operators, especially those circumventing laws under the guise of legitimate residency or visa programmes. Pictures courtesy of Workpoint. A collision in the Sai Mai district of Bangkok has claimed the lives of a 38-year-old mother and her 9-year-old daughter after a cement mixer truck sideswiped their motorcycle, killing both at the scene. The incident occurred at 16:35 on 11 June, on Soi Sai Mai 51, off Sai Mai Road, when the truck driver veered into the left lane and struck the motorcycle, which was being driven in a reported normal manner. Eyewitnesses reported that the force of the collision caused both victims to be thrown from the vehicle and die instantly. The driver of the cement mixer attempted to flee the scene, locking himself in the cab of the truck and continuing to drive. However, a local security guard and concerned citizens gave chase and intercepted the vehicle on Soi Sai Mai 63. After a tense standoff, members of the public were able to pressure the driver into exiting the vehicle, where he was held before being handed over to police officers. The husband of the deceased woman, Mr. Wuttichai Chansena, 41, arrived at the site of the crash. Mr. Wuttichai recounted the moment he discovered the news. He had returned home early from work for reasons he couldn’t explain. As he passed the scene on a bus, he noticed a crash had taken place, but emergency responders had already covered the bodies with a tarp. It wasn’t until he reached home and realised his wife and daughter had not returned that he began to panic. Repeated calls to his wife’s phone went unanswered. He borrowed a friend’s motorcycle and returned to the scene, where he saw a photo taken at the time of the crash. Recognising their motorcycle in the image, he realised with horror that his wife and daughter were the victims. A local security guard, Ms. Wanwisa Anurakdilok, who witnessed the crash, confirmed that the cement mixer had drifted into the motorcycle’s lane without warning. She noted that another security guard had immediately followed the truck after it fled the scene. A lawyer representing the cement truck driver contacted the family of the victims and offered to cover transportation and funeral costs totalling 50,000 baht. The family has yet to discuss full compensation, but the driver’s representatives have reportedly promised to provide further support and reparations. Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-06-12

Pictures courtesy of Matichon. A dramatic incident unfolded on the afternoon if 11 June, when a traditional rocket (bung fai) crashed through the ceiling of a classroom at Ban Khui Tub Tao School in Khum Ngern sub-district, Mueang District, Yasothon Province. The incident occurred at approximately 15:00. According to local reports, the rocket penetrated the classroom ceiling and embedded itself into the floor, narrowly missing both teachers and students who were present during a lesson. Initial investigations suggest the rocket may have originated from a launch site in Don Phra Chan village, Phanom Phrai sub-district, Phanom Phrai District in neighbouring Roi Et Province. The school has since recorded photographic evidence of the incident and authorities are now working to trace the source of the rogue rocket and ensure appropriate measures are taken. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the event has raised fresh concerns about the safety and regulation of traditional rocket festivals in northeastern Thailand, especially in proximity to populated areas such as schools. Authorities are urging those responsible for future launches to exercise extreme caution and adhere strictly to safety protocols. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-12

UPDATE Murder Suspect in Car Shooting of Partner Detained Picture courtesy of Amarin A car salesman accused of fatally shooting his partner and leaving her body in a parked car has been remanded in custody, while showing signs of severe mental distress. Police have opposed bail on grounds of the seriousness of the crime and potential flight risk. The suspect, 34-year-old Mr. Meepaphat, was taken to the Thonburi Criminal Court on the morning of 11 June, by investigators from Phetkasem Police Station. He faces multiple charges, including murder, illegal possession of a firearm (registered but not under his name), unlawful public carrying of a weapon and discharging a firearm without cause. The body of the victim, his girlfriend, was discovered inside a vehicle on Soi Phetkasem 67, Sub-soi 8, Bangkok. CCTV footage and forensic evidence appear to support the charge of murder. Forensic analysis indicates the shot was fired from the rear seat, striking the woman in the back of the head and exiting through her right temple before shattering the driver’s side window. According to police, Mr. Meepaphat spent the night pacing restlessly in his holding cell, showing signs of agitation and anxiety. When his elder brother and relatives visited him at the police station earlier in the day, they reported that he was incoherent and unresponsive. The family has since indicated they are unlikely to seek bail. As the suspect was escorted to the police van for transfer to court, reporters attempted to question him about his motives. Mr. Meepaphat remained largely silent, offering no insight into the events or his reasoning. He did, however, quietly express a desire to apologise to the victim and said he still loved their child. Visibly emotional, he clutched a handkerchief in his fist as the van drove off. Though he denied all charges during initial questioning and gave what police described as “confused and circular” answers, officers do not believe the suspect was intoxicated or suffering from any psychiatric disorder. His official statement was given in the presence of a lawyer and his brother. Investigators are continuing their work to confirm the bullet trajectory and examine the vehicle in further detail. A second vehicle, which the suspect reportedly drove alongside the victim’s car to stop it, prior to the shooting, is still missing. Police are working to locate it as part of the broader investigation. Adapted by Asean Now from Amarin 2025-06-12

Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 34-year-old suspected drug dealer was fatally shot by police after a dramatic chase and violent confrontation in Nonthaburi province on the evening of 10 June. The incident occurred around 19:30, when patrol officers from Mueang Nonthaburi Police Station attempted to stop a man suspected of possessing illegal narcotics. The suspect, later identified as Mr Rattawat, also known as “Ae Sai Ma”, fled on a Honda Wave 125 motorcycle, leading police on a high-speed pursuit. Officers followed the suspect from Tiwanon Road through several intersections until he veered into Soi Wat Chomphuwek, in Tha Sai Subdistrict, Mueang District. Attempting to evade capture, the suspect lost control of his motorcycle after hitting a speed bump and crashed in front of a factory. As police approached, Mr Rattawat attempted to flee on foot while carrying a black shoulder bag and a plastic bag containing large quantities of yaba (methamphetamine pills) and crystal meth. When officers caught up with him, he drew a knife and tried to stab one of them. Sergeant Nattawat Ketkaew, one of the pursuing officers, shouted at the suspect to drop the weapon. When the suspect ignored the command and attempted to lunge again, Sgt Nattawat fired in self-defence, hitting the suspect. Officers immediately administered first aid and called emergency medical services. Despite being rushed to Phra Nang Klao Hospital, Mr Rattawat succumbed to his injuries. At the scene, police recovered the knife used in the attack, the black bag, and plastic-wrapped narcotics. His damaged motorcycle, bearing a Pathum Thani licence plate, was found 10 metres away from the point of arrest. Police Corporal Nakarin Panan, the officer nearly stabbed during the altercation, credited his narrow escape to a Buddhist amulet and a protective charm made from his mother’s tooth, both of which he wore around his neck. Prior to the incident, both officers had received intelligence about a planned drug handover in the area and had been patrolling in response. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-12

Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 56-year-old man was killed instantly after his 22-wheeled articulated lorry overturned and slammed into a power pole along a notoriously steep road in Tak province on the evening of 10 June. The crash occurred around 17:00 near Pang Manora, Village 6, in Mae Pa Subdistrict, Mae Sot District. According to reports received by the 191 emergency radio centre, the lorry overturned and blocked almost two lanes of the Tak–Mae Sot highway, inbound direction, just before the notorious “Mystery Hill” incline. Emergency responders from Pitak Karn Rescue Unit rushed to the scene, where they found the Hino lorry overturned, with its cab against a fallen power pole on the central road divider. The skid marks on the road stretched over 150 metres, indicating a last-minute attempt to avoid the collision. The driver, later identified as Mr. Supasak, a resident of Wang Thong District in Phitsanulok, was found trapped inside the mangled cabin. Rescue personnel used hydraulic cutting tools to extract his body, after he was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was later transported to Mae Sot Hospital for further examination. Police believe the driver, who was travelling alone with no passengers, was unfamiliar with the route, which includes several dangerous curves and gradients. Investigators from Mae Sot Police Station, led by Pol. Lt. Manun Donlao, are working to confirm the precise cause of the crash. The road remained partially blocked for several hours as authorities cleared the wreckage and inspected damage to the power infrastructure. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-12
