Picture from responders. On the evening of December 7, a man took his own life by jumping from the Bhumibol 1 Bridge, Samut Prakan, in front of a security guard who was unable to intervene in time. At approximately 17:00, Police Lieutenant Colonel Theerasak Chaimanee, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) of Phra Pradaeng Police Station, received a report of the incident. According to the security guard stationed on the bridge, the man, wearing a blue sports jersey and long jeans, arrived alone on a white-and-red Honda CPX motorcycle (license plate from Bangkok). He parked in the middle of the bridge, facing Rama III Road, and made a phone call. Moments later, he climbed over the railing and leapt off the bridge. The security guard, identified as 43-year-old Mr. Rungsan Jannil, stated that he attempted to reach the man and shouted to stop him but was too far away to intervene. Traffic noise on the bridge also likely drowned out his calls. Police officers and rescue volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation rushed to the scene. The motorcycle was found parked on the bridge with no sign of the rider. Looking down from the bridge, authorities located the man's body in the Lad Pho Public Health Park below, on the Phra Pradaeng side. The deceased was identified as Mr. Supasit Samnukwanphairot, 26, residing at Soi Pracha Uthit 33, Bangmod Subdistrict, Thung Khru District, Bangkok. Near the body were a mobile phone and broken glasses. Initial examination revealed severe injuries, including head trauma, a large open wound on his left heel and fractures in his left arm and leg. The security guard reported smelling alcohol at the scene. He mentioned that a similar incident occurred the previous week, but he was able to calm the individual down before any harm was done. Police photographed the scene and transferred the body to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Police General Hospital for an autopsy. Investigators are now looking into the motive behind the man's actions and have contacted his family to inform them. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai) or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Picture courtesy of Matichon. Two forest rangers from Tad Mok National Park were seriously injured after being attacked by a wild bull (gaur) while patrolling a remote area of the park. The incident occurred around 10:45 on December 8 in a forested region on the border of Phetchabun and Chaiyaphum provinces. The rangers, Prapan and Anant, were part of a patrol team when they encountered the bull. Prapan sustained severe injuries, including a large gash to his abdomen that caused his intestines to protrude, while Anant suffered a broken right arm. Due to the severity of their injuries, they were unable to be evacuated on foot and immediately called for urgent assistance. At 14:00, a helicopter from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, along with a Air Doctor team, was dispatched to the scene. Prapan was airlifted first due to his critical condition, and he was taken to Phetchabun Hospital. Anant was rescued shortly after and both rangers were safely evacuated. The incident took place some distance from the park headquarters, in a location that normally requires a 2-3 day walk to reach. The five-member patrol team had been on duty since December 4. Initial reports suggest the attack occurred as the rangers were performing their routine forest surveillance. The head of Tad Mok National Park, Ronarat Sirimakorn, confirmed the details, saying further investigation into the exact circumstances of the attack would be conducted once the injured personnel are stable. The priority remains on providing immediate medical care for the rangers. -- 2024-12-09

Picture from responders. Police from the Samut Prakan City Police Station received a report at approximately 21.00 on December 7, of a fatal motorcycle crash involving a garbage truck in Soi Khajornwit, near the curve before the Baan Ua Athorn housing project in Phraeksa Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Prakan Province. Rescue teams from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and Ruamkusol Foundation were dispatched to the scene. The crash occurred on a long curve on a two-lane road. At the scene, authorities found a white Foton garbage truck with license plate from Bangkok parked on the roadside. The truck had a dented front plate, a broken left fog light, and a damaged bumper. In front of the truck lay the lifeless body of Mr. Chaiwichit Channiam, 47, face down in a pool of blood. He had severe head and facial injuries. Nearby, his red Honda PCX motorcycle, license plate from Bangkok, was found damaged, with scratches, a torn seat, and bent handlebars. Witnesses stated that the deceased had been riding side by side with another motorcycle. He lost control on the curve, hit the curb, and slid into the garbage truck. The truck driver, Mr. Paphatthanakorn Khumnojan, 61, explained that he was en route to collect garbage in Bang Kaeo when the victim’s motorcycle lost control, collided with the curb, and hit his truck. A witness, Ms. Fon, recounted, “I was riding ahead when I heard the crash. I turned back and saw someone injured, so I immediately called the authorities. He was twitching slightly but was unresponsive. It seemed like he had already lost consciousness.” Another witness, Mr. Montree Choocherd, said, “The victim was racing with another motorcycle. When he lost control on the curve, the other bike kept going and didn’t return. This curve often sees accidents, and it seemed like they had been racing from the beginning of the street.” The victim’s wife, Ms. Yui, 45, arrived at the scene in tears. She shared that her husband worked overtime that evening and last contacted her around 20:30. She said, “He usually drives cautiously. He’s never been in an accident before. Last week, he said something unusual to our child: ‘If I’m not around, take care of your mom because I’m tired.’ He had never said anything like that before.” Authorities documented the scene and took the garbage truck driver in for further questioning. CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to determine the exact cause of the crash. The victim’s body has been sent to Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute at Ramathibodi Hospital for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing. -- 2024-12-09

Picture from responders. A 57-year-old woman from Khao Chaison district, identified as Ms. Somporn Rakjun, was found dead in a deep pond, in her village on the afternoon of December 8. Relatives reported that she had previously claimed to hear mysterious voices urging her to jump into the water. Rescue teams from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Unit of Phatthalung Province recovered her body from the pond, which is over 5 metres deep, 8 metres wide, and 12 metres long. The operation, which began at around 15.00 took approximately 30 minutes. Ms. Somporn’s body was found wearing a traditional Thai sarong and blouse with no visible injuries. Relatives shared that Ms. Somporn had exhibited unusual behaviour over the past month. She often claimed to hear voices instructing her not to eat and to jump into water. Concerned for her well-being, her family sought help from spiritual healers and medical professionals, but her condition remained unchanged. Ms. Somporn’s refusal to eat had left her severely underweight. On the day of the incident, Ms. Somporn had left her father’s house, where she had been staying due to recent flooding in her own home, to return to her house about 100 metres away. She left at around 09.00, but when she had not arrived by the afternoon, her family began searching for her. They found her sandals near the pond and feared she had jumped in. Authorities were contacted, and divers soon recovered her body. The body has been sent to Khao Chaison Hospital for an autopsy. Authorities have ruled out foul play, and the family has accepted her death as a tragic accident. -- 2024-12-09
