Man Missing for Three Days Found Dead with Multiple Reptile Bite Marks A man who disappeared after fleeing into dense marshland following an alleged theft at a convenience store was found dead, showing signs of reptile bites. A man who disappeared after fleeing into dense marshland following an alleged theft at a convenience store was found dead, showing signs of reptile bites. Family members, who had been searching for him since his disappearance, discovered his body after three days. At around 17.00 on November 11, Deputy Police Lieutenant Narathip Sutont of the Bang Pa-in Police Station in Ayutthaya received a report of a deceased man found in a marshy field behind Sinthiwa Thani Village in Sam Ruean Subdistrict. Officers from Ayutthaya Rescue Foundation, along with other rescue personnel, arrived promptly to investigate the scene. The area, a large marsh surrounded by reeds up to four metres high, was filled with a strong odour of decay. Inside, authorities discovered the body of a man lying face down. He was identified as Kanathip Jayapokuan, 44, by his distinctive tattoos. He wore a black long-sleeved shirt rolled up to expose his back and showed signs of being bitten by reptiles. Parts of his body, including his right arm and parts of his legs, had been gnawed down to the bone. Alongside the body, a large monitor lizard was seen lurking nearby, drawn by the scent of the remains. Authorities struggled to retrieve the body due to poor lighting and the thick mud, which complicated their efforts. Inside the man's jacket, authorities found a selection of convenience store items, including a can of instant coffee, a packet of pickled fish, marinated pork, and two bags of peanuts. These items were reportedly stolen from a local convenience store, where Kanathip was seen before his disappearance. Sathorn Jayapokuan, 47, the man's older brother and the first to locate the body, had been looking for him since the evening of November 8. Witnesses reported seeing Kanathip fleeing over a fence and disappearing into the dense marshland behind Sinthiwa Thani Village on November 8 after an alleged theft. Despite extensive search efforts, including the use of drones, authorities and family members had been unable to locate him. Namthip Khudpin, a 37-year-old friend, shared that she had been in contact with Kanathip on November 8. They last exchanged messages around 18.00 but communication abruptly ceased, leading her to believe he might have been detained. Initially, she and others thought he might be stranded with a broken-down vehicle and began searching for him in the areas he frequented. Rescue team member Panya Chumanee from Ayutthaya Rescue Foundation noted that Kanathip likely became lost or exhausted while evading authorities in the challenging marsh terrain. His body was reportedly dragged and partially consumed by monitor lizards and other wildlife. The police have transferred the body to the Institute of Forensic Science in Pathum Thani for a detailed autopsy. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-12

Fire Engulfs Commercial Building in Ranong Market Area A fire broke out late at night in a four-story, 14-unit commercial building in the bustling Ranong Thani Market area, Bang Non, Ranong City District. A fire broke out late at night in a four-story, 14-unit commercial building in the bustling Ranong Thani Market area, Bang Non, Ranong City District. Firefighters battled the blaze for over five hours, managing to contain it before it spread further. The fire destroyed two units that housed a store selling Buddhist supplies and general items. The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department of Ranong Municipality received reports of the fire around 22.00 on November 11. Local authorities swiftly coordinated with nearby municipalities and private companies, dispatching over 30 fire trucks to the scene to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent units. The fire reportedly started in units 3 and 4 of the building, which were occupied by a shop named Thooptian Thong, selling religious supplies and miscellaneous goods. The fire originated on the ground floor and quickly spread to upper floors stocked with inventory, leading to an immediate evacuation of nearby residents. Despite the extensive firefighting efforts, the fire continued to rage. Firefighters brought in a crane with a cage, from a private company, to lift personnel and hoses to the second and third floors, containing the blaze to two units. Efforts to fully extinguish the fire were complicated by structural risks; the front awning and steel framework of the building posed collapse risks, leading to the use of heavy equipment to remove obstructive structures. The fire, still active with many hot spots still burning, after five hours, was expected to be fully under control by the morning of November 12. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but significant stock losses were incurred. Eyewitnesses described the incident as terrifying. A nearby resident said they noticed black smoke and heard what sounded like firecrackers from the direction of the store. Moments later, a power outage ensued, prompting an evacuation. Another witness, dining at a nearby restaurant, initially thought the smoke was from burning trash until they saw flames coming from the shop’s rear. Ms. Kanathip Sukcharoen, Ranong’s Deputy Governor and director of the response team, later explained that the firefighting efforts successfully contained the fire to the two units. Authorities believe the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit, though an official investigation is underway. Pictures from responders -- 2024-11-12

Chemical Spill Causes Chaos in Rayong, Sparks Environmental Concern A chemical spill brought traffic to a standstill and raised alarm among Rayong residents after a number of caustic soda totes fell from a truck in Pluak Daeng District. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1343288-chemical-spill-causes-chaos-in-rayong-sparks-environmental-concern/ -
A chemical spill brought traffic to a standstill and raised alarm among Rayong residents on the morning of November 11, after a number of caustic soda totes fell from a truck in Pluak Daeng District. CCTV footage captured the dramatic scene at the Map Toei intersection, where the totes tumbled onto the road, with some rupturing and spilling the hazardous chemical. The incident occurred around 09:50 as the truck was transporting the liquid caustic soda from Map Yang Phon to the Pinthong 3 Industrial Estate. According to the driver, Mr. Kenmanee, 46, the truck’s brakes malfunctioned as he was taking a curve, causing the totes to dislodge and fall onto the road surface. Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), has strong corrosive properties, which can pose significant health risks if, including severe burns and respiratory issues, it comes into contact with skin, eyes, or lungs. Witnesses reported an intense chemical odour, prompting emergency services to swiftly secure the area. Pluak Daeng rescue teams arrived quickly, cordoning off the scene to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians. Local resident Mr. Panupon Wongkrueason, 38, voiced community concerns, urging officials to expedite the cleanup to prevent environmental contamination. “This spill is a serious risk not only for us but also for the surrounding environment,” he stated. The Village Headman, Mr. Apisit Arttharaksa, 33, led initial containment efforts, applying lime and sand to the spill to minimise the spread of the caustic soda. Pluak Daeng District Chief Mr. Sakon Korakot, health officials, and environmental agencies were on-site to monitor and manage the situation. Authorities closed the Map Toei intersection temporarily to allow for the safe cleanup of the road surface, diverting traffic to alternative routes and cautioning drivers to avoid slippery conditions. The incident has sparked calls for stricter regulations on hazardous material transport, with officials emphasising the need for rigorous safety checks on trucks carrying dangerous goods. In a shocking act of jealousy, a vegetable seller fatally stabbed his wife, suspecting her of talking to another man. The incident occurred around noon on November 11 in Rayong Province. Pol. Sub-Lt. Wittaya Chamroen Sat, Deputy Investigation Officer at Samnak Thong Police Station, received a report from Mr. Sakphon Anuwatthanopas, the assistant village head, about the murder at a residence in Moo 1, Samnak Thong, Muang District, Rayong. The suspect, the victim's husband, was detained at the scene. When officers and emergency responders from Rayong Hospital and Sawang Porn Kuson Rescue Unit arrived, they found the victim, Ms. Sangwan, aged 48, lying on her back with 16 stab wounds, surrounded by blood. Rescuers attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful. Nearby, they recovered a blood-stained fruit knife, believed to be the murder weapon. According to Mr. Sakphon, he was outside his house, near the couple's residence, when he heard them arguing. Used to their frequent quarrels, he paid no attention until he heard screams. Rushing over, he saw the husband, identified as Mr. Nares, 49, leaving the house. Inside, he found Ms. Sangwan lying in a pool of blood and immediately detained the suspect, who reportedly said, "I've put up with my wife's affair for too long." An initial investigation revealed that both Mr. Nares and Ms. Sangwan were originally from Buriram Province and had been working as vegetable sellers. Their relationship had been troubled by frequent arguments, often fueled by Mr. Nares' jealousy. This latest dispute escalated when he saw his wife on the phone and suspected she was speaking to another man. The suspect has been taken into custody for further questioning and will face charges according to the law. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-12

In a case of violent retribution, police from Thailand's Region 2 Investigation Unit have apprehended a 28-year-old woman, Supattra, following her brutal assault on her former boyfriend. The arrest was made on November11, at an unnamed residence in Chak Nok, Moo 4, Huai Yai Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province, where Supattra had been hiding. She faces serious charges including attempted murder. The incident began after Supattra discovered that her then- boyfriend was secretly married. Disturbed by his deception, she sought to end their relationship. However, the ex-boyfriend refused to let go and repeatedly tried to rekindle their relationship. In a move that escalated tensions, he reportedly shared an intimate video of the two with Supattra's daughter. This action deeply traumatised the young girl, who informed her mother. Supattra allegedly pleaded with her ex to delete the video, but he responded with threats. Matters came to a head during a meeting arranged to resolve their differences, where discussions turned violent. Overcome with anger, Supattra struck her ex-boyfriend with a metal wrench, knocking him unconscious. Her current boyfriend allegedly joined in, delivering further blows until the victim was left in a critical condition and in a coma. The pair fled the scene immediately after the assault. The woman's new boyfriend was subsequently apprehended by authorities and remains in custody. Supattra, however, evaded capture until now, when police tracked her to her new residence in Huai Yai. She has since confessed to the charges and is in custody, awaiting prosecution by the Nong Prue Police Station. Picture courtesy of Sattahip News. -- 2024-11-12
