A Bangkok-bound intercity bus carrying 47 passengers collided with a truck carrying rice, on a winding section of road between Song and Ngao districts. The incident occurred on November 5, at kilometre markers 30-31, near Ban Wang Din in Moo 9, Ban Klang Subdistrict, Song District, Phrae Province. The bus, with registration number from Bangkok, lost control on a curve and clipped the trailer truck, registration number from Chainat. The bus overturned onto its side and was left resting on the roadside verge after falling over the guardrails and very close to plunging into a deep wooded ravine. The Song District Chief, Mr. Supachai Boonthip, and Police Colonel Bamrung Nomsearian from Song Police Station, immediately coordinated with rescue teams to respond to the scene. Emergency personnel secured the bus using ropes to prevent any possible chance of it slipping into the ravine, then worked to extract four passengers who were trapped inside the overturned bus. The crash site is a three-lane, well-paved asphalt road with no potholes, though road conditions were damp from light rain at the time. Eight sections of the guardrail were damaged in the accident. The collision was first reported at approximately 05:50 by Song Police Station and total of 45 passengers sustained various injuries and were quickly transported to local hospitals for medical treatment. The preliminary report indicated the 45 injuries were categorised by severity, with one in a critical condition, 17 with moderate injuries and 27 with minor injuries. Emergency teams from Song Ruam Jai Association, Luniget Rescue, and the Phetkasem Phrae Foundation were involved in the rescue efforts. A 13-year-old student suffered an injury on the morning of November 4, when a metal rod from a damaged marble bench pierced his leg at a school in Udon Thani. The incident took place around 11:50, sparking immediate concern and a swift response from emergency services. The Udon Thani Promotion of Dharma Foundation was alerted by the emergency radio centre about the incident , which occurred in the schoolyard. Foundation personnel arrived at the scene promptly and found the young boy fully conscious but clearly distressed, with a piece of metal embedded in his leg. Rescuers used metal cutters to carefully sever the rod, freeing him from the bench structure. Medical personnel from Wattana Hospital then transported him to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment. School officials have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but preliminary observations suggested that the marble bench was in a deteriorated condition, raising concerns about the safety of school facilities. A parent whose child attends the school commented, “This accident could have happened to any student. We expect the school to ensure all facilities are safe for our children.” The school is reportedly planning an inspection of all seating areas and playground equipment to prevent similar incidents. Local education authorities will investigate the incident and also conduct broader safety checks in schools across the district to address potential hazards. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-05

According to court documents, the plaintiff has detailed a breakdown of the damages, which include: • Project Bid Preparation Costs: 590,000 baht for initial project preparation. • Project Management Expenses: 3.7 million baht in salaries for essential project staff (manager, engineer, and architect), along with 11.3 million baht for setting up a prefabricated office and crane. An additional 100,000 baht was reportedly spent on bid submission. • Bid Guarantee Fees: 34.3 million baht paid in bid guarantee fees, with another 556,806 baht incurred after the cancellation. • Damages from Unused Guarantee: Calculated at 3.9 million baht (5% per annum over 27 months) due to lost financial opportunity. • Loss of Expected Payments: A projected loss of 30.9 million baht in expected payments, as well as a 1 million baht expense attributed to the construction work valued at 634 million baht. Extend an invitation to Ngamwongwarn Construction to sign a contract. 4. Compensate the plaintiff with 50 million baht in damages, plus 5% interest until fully paid. 5. Cover the plaintiff’s legal and attorney fees. The claim emphasises Ngamwongwarn Construction’s financial investments and projected losses due to the BMA’s decision to halt the project. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and the BMA have yet to issue a public response to the lawsuit. The court’s decision could have significant implications for future public contracts and projects managed by the BMA. File picture for reference only. -- 2024-11-05

Department of National Parks Seeks Leads in Trap Killing of Phu Luang Wild Elephant The Director-General of Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has ordered an investigation into a trap that killed a wild elephant in Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary, Loei Province. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1342605-department-of-national-parks-seeks-leads-in-trap-killing-of-phu-luang-wild-elephant/ -
The Director-General of Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has ordered an investigation into a trap that killed a wild elephant in Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary, Loei Province. Meanwhile, the head of Protected Area Regional Office 8 has filed a police report at Phu Ruea Police Station, urging swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice. On November 4, authorities discovered the body of a tuskless adult male wild elephant, known as a “Si Dor,” in the Nam Rin stream in Ban Song Khon, Pla Ba sub-district, Phu Ruea district. The elephant’s trunk was tightly ensnared by a spring-loaded animal trap, attached to bamboo branches and rocks in the stream. Preliminary investigations estimate the elephant died approximately two weeks ago. Mr. Atthapol Charoenchansa, Director-General of the Department of National Parks, confirmed he has received a report on the incident. He has ordered park officials to gather evidence, search for witnesses, and interview local residents to see if anyone noticed suspicious activity in the area. “This is the first time in many years that I’ve seen this type of spring trap in use,” Atthapol noted. “These traps are typically set for smaller animals, like wild boars, rather than large animals like elephants. This trap may have accidentally ensnared the elephant’s trunk, leaving it unable to escape and eventually leading to its death. Nonetheless, we are committed to identifying and prosecuting those responsible for this incident.” The elephant’s carcass will be disposed of according to department procedures, Atthapol added. Mr. Chulakorn Muangkaew, Director of Protected Area Regional Office 8, said he was informed of the incident by Mr. Wanchai Simmasian, head of Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary, who discovered the carcass on November 3. Following the discovery, wildlife officials, including a rapid response team, inspected the site. Officials have collected evidence and filed a police report. Coordination is ongoing with veterinarians from the Department of Protected Area Regional Office 8 (Khon Kaen) and forensic investigators from Loei Province to determine the precise cause of death and to expedite efforts to identify those responsible. A crash occurred late on November 4, when a 45-year-old woman, Ms. Monrada Phothong, lost her life after her motorcycle struck a pile of stones placed as the only barrier around an uncovered drainage pipe on a local road. The incident took place near the entrance of a village on Khlong Luang 10 Alley in Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani. According to investigating officer Police Lieutenant Teerayut Panpong, of the Khlong Luang Police Station, the accident happened at approximately 23.00. Emergency responders, including medics from Thammasat University Hospital, Ruamkatanyu Foundation volunteers, and Hon Sokun Rescue, quickly arrived at the scene. Upon arrival, authorities found the drainage pipe excavation site scattered with cement debris and stones around its opening, with no barriers or lights. Evidence showed clear skid marks on the road, suggesting Ms. Monrada’s motorcycle slid upon impact. Her body was found a short distance away from her overturned Yamaha motorcycle, which bore a Bangkok license plate. Witnesses on the scene provided further insight. Mr. Rattanabodin Chukacharoenroj, 29, stated that as he was driving home, he noticed the motorcycle lying in the middle of the road, with the injured woman nearby. He immediately called the emergency number, and helped Ms. Monrada who had not yet succumbed to her injuries. The casualty died before emergency responders could arrive. Mr. Rattanabodin speculated that she may have tried to swerve to avoid a speed bump and collided with the stone pile marking the excavation site, though he was unaware when the drainage work had commenced. A colleague of the deceased shared that Ms. Monrada had just finished her shift and was en route home at the time of the incident, taking her normal route. Following the initial investigation, Lt. Teerayut Panpong documented the scene and directed Ruamkatanyu Foundation volunteers to transport Ms. Monrada’s body to Thammasat University Hospital for a thorough forensic examination. Further investigation will be conducted to determine liability in the case and whether safety precautions were sufficient at the drainage site. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-05

Mystery Box Turns Out to Be Junk, Not Drugs: Delivery Staff’s Confusion in Pattaya In a bizarre turn of events, a delivery employee at a private courier service in Nong Prue, Chonburi, reported a suspicious package believed to contain illegal drugs. However, when police arrived to investigate, they found nothing more than household items and junk inside the box Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1342603-mystery-box-turns-out-to-be-junk-not-drugs-delivery-staff’s-confusion-in-pattaya/ -
In a bizarre turn of events, a delivery employee at a private courier service in Nong Prue, Chonburi, reported a suspicious package believed to contain illegal drugs. However, when police arrived to investigate, they found nothing more than household items and junk inside the box, leading to considerable confusion among staff and officials alike. The incident began around 08:30 on November 4, when a private courier employee notified the Nong Prue Police Station of a suspicious package at their warehouse on Khao Noi Road. Staff had received a call from the package’s intended recipient, who made unsettling claims that it contained illegal drugs worth 4,000 baht. Concerned by the recipient’s urgency, staff reported it to authorities for investigation. When officers from the investigative and patrol divisions arrived, they were met by anxious employees outside the three-story building, which serves as a distribution hub for the area. The suspicious box, a small package wrapped in red tape labeled “Fragile”, was examined by the police, who carefully unsealed it. Inside, they found nothing incriminating: a faucet, a phone charger adapter, and a cigarette wrapper containing a resealable plastic bag. Despite a thorough search, no drugs were discovered, baffling both the police and the courier staff. One of the courier employees explained that while delivering items in the Bang Lamung and Sattahip areas, they received multiple calls from the recipient, who insisted on urgent delivery. When the employee informed them of delays, a woman claiming to be the recipient’s aunt phoned, ominously saying that the package contained drugs. The aunt alleged that her nephew had admitted to ordering drugs worth 4,000 baht. Soon after, the courier received a follow-up message reading, “Have you notified the police? If not, I will report that this courier service handles drug deliveries.” Alarmed, the employee returned the package to the warehouse and alerted the police, leading to the search and the surprising outcome. The police are now investigating the origins of the strange call and will determine whether any further action is necessary. For now, the incident remains a case of mistaken suspicions and an unusual scare for the courier service staff. Picture of the suspect package. -- 2024-11-05

A monk reportedly under the influence of alcohol on November 4, drove his car into two pedestrians, injuring both, before losing control and veering into a local cassava field. The incident took place in the Nong Phrong subdistrict, Si Maha Phot district, Prachinburi. Authorities and rescue workers responded promptly to the scene. The vehicle, a bronze Toyota, showed damage to its front and was left stranded in a field. The two injured pedestrians were assisted by rescue workers and sent to the hospital. The driver, identified as Phra Samphao, displayed signs of intoxication, speaking incoherently and staggering. His robe slipped off at one point, nearly leaving him fully exposed. Inside his car, authorities found a bottle of 30-proof rice whiskey. Witnesses reported that they saw the monk’s car coming from Raboh Phai. After veering into the area, it struck a factory worker and a local resident. The monk then exited the vehicle, emitting a strong smell of alcohol and displaying behaviour characteristic of inebriation. When questioned, he claimed he was en route to Wat Khlong Yai Soi and had swerved to avoid another car, which allegedly caused him to lose control. In response to further questions, he insisted he had not been drinking but attributed his condition to chewing kratom leaves. Mr. Dam, a friend who was riding with the monk, told police that the monk had not been drinking during their travels that day but speculated he may have consumed alcohol earlier. “He’s been my friend for a long time,” Dam stated, “and drinking is a habit of his. It’s post-Buddhist Lent, so he was probably celebrating.” Local residents expressed frustration with Phra Samphao’s recurrent misconduct, revealing he has been repeatedly defrocked for drinking only to relocate to other nearby temples. Initially, police took him to Raboh Phai station for questioning. The local ecclesiastical authority have officially defrocked him again at Wat Raboh Phai following the incident. An incident occurred on the morning of November 4, when a car crashed through a parking lot wall and plunged from a condominium in the Pinklao area, startling residents, but only causing minor injuries to the driver. The incident at approximately 11:15 prompted an immediate response from local rescue services. Witnesses recounted seeing the vehicle suddenly accelerate and smash through the parking lot barrier wall on the 3rd floor, before plummeting down to the ground below. Photos shared by residents of the condominium show the vehicle’s wreckage lying on its roof, surrounded by debris from the broken wall. The impact left a significant hole in the concrete wall, highlighting the force of the collision. The driver, identified as Mr. Sumet, 69 years old, sustained minor injuries and was quickly attended to by emergency responders. He was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical evaluation and treatment. Officials have yet to determine the exact cause of the accident, though initial reports suggest that the driver may have accidentally accelerated while navigating the parking structure. An investigation is underway to assess whether mechanical failure or other factors contributed to the incident. This unusual accident has sparked discussions on social media about the safety of parking facilities in high-rise condominiums and the importance of protective barriers. Condominium management has pledged to review safety measures and work with authorities to ensure that similar incidents are prevented in the future. Authorities announced that they will conduct a full inspection of the parking area and ensure the implementation any necessary repairs and reinforcements. The condominium management has assured residents that safety remains their priority and that they are cooperating fully with investigators. Picture from residents. -- 2024-11-04

UPDATE British Tourist’s Leg Falls Through Roof in Pattaya Hotel Incident A British tourist, heavily intoxicated, fell from the second-floor balcony of the Freelancer Hotel in Nong Prue, Bang Lamung District, crashing through the roof of an adjacent internet café. The incident occurred at the GLP Internet Café, where patrons were shocked as the man’s legs appeared dangling through the ceiling, sparking immediate calls for emergency assistance. Rescue teams from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation rushed to the scene at approximately 02.05 on November 4, where they found Mr. Paul Hadfield, a 51-year-old British national, partially protruding through the ceiling, calling for help. Emergency responders managed to carefully extract him from the damaged ceiling and provided initial medical treatment on-site before transporting him to a local hospital. An inspection revealed that Mr. Hadfield had fallen from his second-floor hotel room balcony, landing on the café’s roof and breaking through the ceiling. Further investigation in his hotel room, Room 210, uncovered a considerable mess, with fecal matter and urine, spread across the bed and floor, creating a strong and unpleasant odour. A witness, Somrak Sensoh, 28, who was in the café at the time, recounted hearing a loud noise from above and, upon looking up, was stunned to see two legs hanging through the ceiling. He immediately called for assistance after realising a foreigner was trapped and in need of help. While Mr. Hadfield sustained only minor injuries, authorities noted that he appeared highly intoxicated and had left his room in a disoriented state. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-04
