On the afternoon of November 3, a weekend outing turned into a dramatic rescue as flash floods trapped tourists at Tha Phae Waterfall in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. Heavy rainfall had triggered a surge of water from the surrounding mountains, stranding multiple visitors on a temporary island in the midst of the flood. The incident took place at Tha Phae Waterfall, located in Ban Na Subdistrict, Chang Klang District, which sits on the edge of the Khao Luang mountain range. The area is a popular spot for both local and visiting tourists, particularly on weekends. In the early hours of November 3, an incident unfolded in a home in Chamai Subdistrict, Thung Song District, when a man, enraged by jealousy, allegedly broke into his ex-wife's residence and shot her and her new partner. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Pasakorn D., reportedly found his ex-wife, Jariya T., 33, and her new boyfriend, Trakarn K., 24, in bed together and, in a fit of rage, opened fire with a .357 caliber handgun. Both Jariya and Trakarn succumbed to their injuries. Police received a call regarding the shooting around 04:45 and immediately responded. By the time they arrived, Jariya had been fatally shot in the head, while Trakarn was critically injured and later passed away at Thung Song Hospital. Outside the house, police found a black Toyota car and a motorcycle parked, and security camera footage captured the suspect fleeing the scene. According to local sources, Jariya had been living separately from Pasakorn for about three months following ongoing disputes. Despite their separation, Pasakorn, who shared a past with Jariya, reportedly continued to visit her and take her out for meals. The situation took a darker turn when Pasakorn suspected Jariya of being romantically involved with someone new, prompting him to surveil her activities. Fueled by jealousy, Pasakorn allegedly confronted the couple, leading to the tragic outcome. Following the shooting, police launched a search, eventually locating Pasakorn and the vehicle reportedly used in his escape. He was found in possession of the handgun, along with additional rounds of ammunition. Pasakorn was escorted to the Thung Song Police Station, where he reportedly admitted to the crime. He cited intense jealousy and a sense of betrayal as his motives for the shooting. In the afternoon, relatives of the victims, including Jariya's father, Chuchat, 56, and Trakarn's father, Banyat, 63, arrived at Maharat Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital to claim the bodies of their loved ones. The police investigation is ongoing. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. -- 2024-11-04

In a tragic collision on the morning of November 3, a drunk driver fatally struck a father and severely injured his daughter as they walked their pet cat along the roadside in Ang Thong Province. The collision occurred on Route 309, Ang Thong-Ayutthaya, in Pho Sa subdistrict, Muang district. Authorities from the Ang Thong Police Station responded promptly after receiving the report. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered 47 year old Piya lying lifeless on the roadside, while his 16 year old daughter, Piyawan, was critically injured. Paramedics rushed the young girl to Ang Thong Hospital for urgent medical attention. The black car responsible for the accident was found nearby, heavily damaged at the front. The driver, identified as 30-year-old Thanawit, was present at the scene. Relatives of the deceased explained that it was a daily routine for Piya to take their pet cat out in the morning for a walk along the road near their home, accompanied by his daughter. Early that morning, the family members were awakened by a loud crash. They hurried outside to find Piya and Piyawan lying injured by the roadside. Witnesses noted that the driver appeared intoxicated, as they reported a strong smell of alcohol coming from him. Police took Thanawit into custody for questioning at Ang Thong Police Station. Preliminary investigation revealed that he had been driving from Pathum Thani towards the city when he lost control of the vehicle, veering off the road and hitting the father and daughter. A breathalyser test showed his blood alcohol concentration at 50 milligrams percent, above the legal limit, supporting the suspicions of drunk driving. Thanawit is now in police custody and faces charges related to the fatal collision and DUI. The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement against drunk driving in Thailand. A crash claimed the life of a 28 year old man early morning of November 3, after he lost control of his pickup truck, veered off the road, and struck a tree. The impact of the collision threw the driver from the vehicle, causing him to land in a nearby waterway, where he was found dead. The accident took place around 04:40 in Ban Non Sanam, Huai Kha Subdistrict, Buntharik District. Rescue teams from the Buntharik Rescue Unit were quick to respond, retrieving the driver’s body from the water channel. The man, identified only as “Suriya” (surname withheld), sustained severe injuries to his head and limbs, leading authorities to investigate whether he had died on impact or drowned after being knocked unconscious. Local law enforcement, led by Police Lieutenant Somporn Akkabut from Buntharik Police Station, reported that the driver was heading back home after visiting a female friend in a nearby village, around 30 kilometres away. Suriya’s mother, Ms. A, said she had warned her son not to return home late due to the risks of nighttime driving. However, Suriya reportedly left his friend’s home at around 04:00 shortly before the crash. The wrecked Isuzu D-Max truck, bearing Nakhon Nayok registration plates, was found crashed against a large roadside tree on the Buntharik-Huai Kha Road. The front of the vehicle was extensively damaged, with no signs of collision with another vehicle, leading investigators to suspect that driver fatigue may have been a factor. An autopsy will be conducted to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role. The victim’s mother, grief-stricken, stated, “I told him to be careful and not come home so late, especially since it’s dark and dangerous. But he didn’t listen.” Preliminary assessments from police and the Buntharik Rescue Unit indicate that Suriya may have dozed off at the wheel, resulting in this fatal crash. The authorities continue to investigate the cause, urging drivers to be mindful of their physical condition and avoid driving under fatigue. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-04

Israeli Employers Fly to Chiang Rai to Recruit Thai Workers Amid High Demand Picture courtesy of Matichon Israeli employers traveled directly to Chiang Rai to recruit Thai workers, with a huge turnout of applicants eager to prove their skills. Israeli employers traveled directly to Chiang Rai to recruit Thai workers, with a huge turnout of applicants eager to prove their skills. On November 3, Thai reporters observed bustling activity at a recruitment event held at a wooden building near the entrance of Chiang Rai Rajabhat University in Muang district. Organised by Wi Dragon Co., Ltd., this recruitment drive specifically seeks skilled labour for construction jobs in Israel, including carpenters, metalworkers, plasterers, and tile installers. In a show of support, Thai comedian Klua Chernyim joined the event to encourage both the applicants and their families. Despite recent reports of the risks involved, such as the recent conflict in Israel that resulted in the deaths of four Thai workers and injuries to another, the atmosphere remained energetic, with applicants lining up for the opportunity to work abroad legally through Thailand’s Department of Labour. Clear signage outside the venue highlighted that the positions are legally sanctioned and open to men aged 25-45, with consultation services provided onsite. Mr. Marius Savescu, a senior engineer representing an Israeli employer, explained the high demand for Thai workers in Israel, where currently around 95,000 foreign labourers are employed, including 20,000 Thais. He praised Thai workers for their skill, diligence, and resilience, noting that these qualities make them particularly sought after. Israel plans to increase its intake of Thai labour, seeking an additional 3,000-4,000 workers this year and potentially up to 10,000 more in 2025. Mr. Savescu assured applicants of good working conditions, including free accommodation, healthcare, and other benefits alongside their wages. Klua Chernyim expressed his encouragement to applicants and their families, commending their enthusiasm and seeing the recruitment as a positive opportunity for skilled workers from Chiang Rai and surrounding northern provinces. He highlighted that it offers a pathway to improve their lives if they have trade skills or driving qualifications. This event marks the second time Chiang Rai has hosted an Israeli recruitment center, following a successful session on October 13, 2024, which paused recruitment upon reaching its target number of workers. Chiang Rai previously saw 2,174 locals employed in Israel in 2023. However, following the October 7, 2023, conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas, three Chiang Rai residents lost their lives, one was injured, and two were taken hostage before being safely repatriated. Since then, many Thai workers have returned to Thailand. Picture courtesy of Matichon -- 2024-11-04

An Indonesian tourist faced a harrowing experience after being abandoned by her traveling companion in a mangrove forest in Samut Sakhon. Local police, responding to a call for help, managed to locate and rescue her from the remote area, where she was left alone and uncertain of her location. On November 3, Samut Sakhon’s 191 Emergency Centre received a report from the Highway Police stating that a foreign national, a woman from Indonesia, had requested assistance after being left stranded in the mangroves. The location, determined through GPS coordinates, placed her in Bang Ya Phraek Subdistrict, Mueang District. A coordinated search effort was immediately launched, involving officers from Tha Chalom Subdistrict Police, the Tourist Police, the Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre of the Upper Gulf of Thailand’s West Coast, the Mangrove Resources Research Centre (Zone 2), and local volunteer foundations. Arriving at the reported location, which was marked by narrow dirt roads flanked by thick mangroves, officers called out and used sirens to signal their presence. After some time, the woman responded, enabling the rescue team to reach her. She was found with minor scratches and her clothing stained from mud and foliage. According to her initial statement, the tourist, an Indonesian woman, had come to Thailand for a vacation with a male friend she had known from school, a German national. They were traveling in a rented white Toyota car. However, during the journey through Samut Sakhon, her companion reportedly had an intense argument with his Thai wife over the phone, discovering that she had sold a house he had purchased for her. Frustrated and upset, he turned his anger toward the Indonesian tourist, threatening her before abandoning her in the forest. He drove away, leaving her without any of her belongings. After realising her precarious situation, the tourist attempted to reach out for help and was ultimately connected with local authorities, who successfully orchestrated her rescue. Grateful for the assistance, she expressed her appreciation to all involved in her rescue. She stated she held no ill will and did not intend to press charges but simply wished to be taken to the airport for her return to Indonesia. Following her rescue, authorities took the tourist to the Tha Chalom Police Station in Samut Sakhon, where an official report was filed. A translator from the Tourist Police was present to facilitate communication. Various organisations also stepped in to provide care before assisting her with transportation to Suvarnabhumi Airport for her flight home. As for the male companion, who abandoned her, relevant authorities are expected to pursue legal action in accordance with applicable laws. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-04

A 31-year-old Danish man, identified as Mr. Asger Ploug Emborg, was detained by police on November 2 for allegedly threatening local residents and brandishing weapons, including BB guns, in Koh Samui. Authorities were alerted after several victims reported instances of intimidation and harassment. The first report was filed by a Myanmar labourer, who claimed the foreign man had threatened his life. Shortly after, two Thai women also came forward, stating that the man had brandished a BB gun and a machete, throwing objects at their car and shouting at them to leave. The suspect allegedly continued to follow one of the victims in his car, on a public road, overtaking her vehicle and pointing a BB gun out the window, escalating her fear. Later that day, police received another complaint from the manager of a hotel in Maret, where Emborg was staying. Hotel staff reported that he had been causing disturbances by throwing objects at other guests and brandishing a BB gun in the premises. Upon arriving at the scene, police found Mr. Emborg in a state of intoxication. A search of his room and vehicle revealed an alarming cache of items, including a long-barrel BB gun, two BB handguns, a samurai sword, a hatchet, six small knives, plastic BB pellets, and four gas canisters. All items were confiscated as evidence. Police Colonel Den Duang Thongsrisuk of Bo Phut Police Station confirmed that Emborg has been charged with public disturbance.
