Elderly Man Loses Home in Fire After Candle Left Burning After Power Cut Off A 63-year-old man, left without electricity for two months due to unpaid bills, lost his home to a fire ignited by a candle left burning while he went to work in his fields. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1342185-elderly-man-loses-home-in-fire-after-candle-left-burning-after-power-cut-off/ -
A 63-year-old man, left without electricity for two months due to unpaid bills, lost his home to a fire ignited by a candle left burning while he went to work in his fields. Returning home, he found everything he owned had been destroyed, with only the clothes on his back remaining. The incident occurred on October 30 at house number 32, Village 9, in Ban Khok, Bua Kho sub-district, Mueang district, Maha Sarakham Province. Upon receiving the emergency report, Police Lieutenant Manoch Manonthee, an investigator from Don Wan Police Station, coordinated with local fire units from Kok Kor and Bua Kho sub-districts, along with rescue teams, to respond to the scene. When fire crews arrived, they encountered intense flames consuming the residence. After battling the blaze for approximately 45 minutes, firefighters managed to bring it under control. Neighbours informed officials that the house belonged to Mr. Sanit Harnkhampa, 63. At the time of the fire, Mr. Sanit was out working in his rice fields, leaving the house unattended. A passing neighbour, returning from the fields, saw flames rising to the second floor and immediately called the police. According to Mr. Sanit, he had fallen behind on his electricity payments, accumulating a debt of 400 baht. The local utility company had subsequently disconnected his service two months prior. To light his home, he had relied on candles. That day, he placed a lit candle near a house pillar before leaving for the fields, intending to return soon after and prepare a meal. Tragically, the candle somehow fell, sparking a fire that spread rapidly through the home. When he returned to the village, the elderly man was met with the devastating sight of his home engulfed in flames. Everything he owned, aside from the clothes he wore, was lost in the fire. “I have nothing left, only this one outfit,” he lamented. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-31

Sakaeo Immigration Police Arrest Woman for Smuggling Chinese National into Thailand In a joint operation, Sakaeo Immigration Police intercepted a Thai woman allegedly hired to transport a Chinese national illegally across the Thai border from Cambodia. In a joint operation, Sakaeo Immigration Police intercepted a Thai woman allegedly hired to transport a Chinese national illegally across the Thai border from Cambodia. The arrest followed a tip-off from Cambodian sources, with authorities stating that the woman had been paid by a broker to assist in smuggling the man into Thailand. The operation unfolded on October 29, when Sakaeo Immigration Police, led by Police Colonel Napattarapong Supaporn, received a report from Colonel Anothai Jindamanee of the Klong Luek Police Station. Intelligence from Cambodian informants indicated that a Chinese man planned to cross into Thailand through a natural channel near Poipet and travel to Bangkok. Authorities were alerted to a black Mercedes-Benz C300e with Bangkok license plate, which was reportedly waiting at the Star Plaza near the Klong Luek border checkpoint in Aranyaprathet District. In response, Police Lieutenant Colonel Amornsak Saengwan and Police Lieutenant Colonel Pruek Chotiprukchukul mobilised an investigative team to collaborate with local police and military units. Officers later spotted the Mercedes leaving the shopping plaza and heading toward a bypass road towards Bangkok. The vehicle was intercepted at a red light near Tha Kham intersection, where they detained the driver, identified as Ms. Sutthichan Chawintrametanon, 32, a resident of Bangkok. Inside the car, police found Mr. Chen Wangshuo, 28, from Jiangsu, China, who was carrying a Chinese passport without an entry stamp for Thailand. During questioning, Ms. Sutthichan claimed she was merely hired to drive Mr. Chen from Star Plaza to Bangkok. Mr. Chen admitted to illegally crossing the border after paying a Cambodian broker 250,000 baht in transportation and facilitation fees. He recounted his journey from China to Vietnam, then Cambodia, and finally across the border into Thailand, intending to visit a friend in Bangkok. The authorities detained both the driver and passenger and seized the Mercedes as evidence. They are conducting further investigations to determine if Mr. Chen has any criminal history or links to the “grey Chinese” networks operating in Thailand. In a shocking case that has sparked public outrage, a senior monk from a well-known temple in Chiang Mai’s Hang Dong district was involved in a serious traffic collision. The incident, reported by the social media page, “Esor Khayee News,” on October 30, revealed that the monk, who held the title of Phra Khru, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he drove his pickup truck and collided with a car driven by a prison director, leaving the latter critically injured. According to the initial report, the crash occurred in the morning of October 24 at a three-way intersection near a Bangchak gas station on the Chiang Mai-Hang Dong Road. Police and emergency responders arrived on the scene to find the monk’s pickup truck severely damaged on the front left side. Authorities noted that the driver was visibly intoxicated, with a blood alcohol level recorded at 155 milligrams per deciliter. The other vehicle involved, a car, was found on the sidewalk with significant damage along its left side. The driver, later identified as Mr. Phongsakorn, also known as “Director Arm,” suffered severe injuries, including fractured ribs and internal injuries. As the Director of Mind Development at Lamphun Central Prison, he was reportedly on his way to work when the pickup truck veered across lanes and struck his car. Emergency medical teams transported him to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, where he remains in critical condition in the ICU. The incident has fueled public criticism due to the monk’s behaviour following the crash. Despite the severity of the collision, it was reported that the monk did not visit or inquire about the victim’s condition. Instead, he continued his religious duties, including accepting donations during Kathin ceremonies. The monk was granted bail shortly after his arrest, reportedly claiming that he needed to fulfill his religious obligations. This incident has sparked a wave of public debate, with many questioning the decision to grant bail to the monk given the circumstances and the extent of the injuries sustained by the prison director. The families of two students who lost their lives in an incident involving a six-wheeled soil truck and a school bus are seeking justice and accountability. The collision , which occurred around 17.00 on October 29, at the intersection near Suan Nok Park, Samed Subdistrict, Buriram, has left the community grieving and outraged. The incident happened as the bus was transporting students from a local school to their villages. The bus was attempting a right turn onto a side road when a soil truck, coming straight from the opposite direction, struck the back of the vehicle. Three students who were standing at the rear of the shuttle were thrown off. Among them, two students, a 13 year old girl, known as “Nin” in Grade 7, and a 16 year old girl, “Om-am” in Grade 11, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another male student in Grade 12 sustained serious injuries. The families are devastated and have raised concerns about the lack of accountability from both drivers involved. The soil truck driver, Mr. Methee, 30, claims he was traveling in a straight path and insists he was not at fault. Meanwhile, Mr. Luea, 77, the school bus driver, argues he had already cleared the lane and blamed the soil truck for the collision. In a concerning turn, Mr. Luea reportedly took the bus to a repair shop immediately following the accident, allegedly attempting to erase evidence, and has since avoided cooperating with authorities. Ms. Saranya the mother of Om-am, expressed her grief, pointing out that school had only reopened for two days when the crash happened. She voiced her frustration over the bus driver’s lack of accountability, particularly as he claims he is not responsible. The family worries about the lack of support and compensation for their loss. Ms. Prakrong the mother of Nin, shared her devastation at finding her daughter lying face-down on the road. She recalled that Mr. Luea had been using his shuttle to transport students daily, with 20-30 children on board each day, never expecting such a tragic outcome. She is baffled and hurt that neither driver has come forward to speak to the families affected, adding that her daughter’s dream of becoming a teacher was tragically cut short. The community is now calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate action to hold those responsible accountable. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-31

In the early hours of October 30, a fire broke out in a two-story wooden and concrete house on Soi U-Thong 18, Praeksa Road, in Samut Prakan’s Mueang district. Prompted by a vigilant American Bully dog barking incessantly, nearby residents sprang into action, alerting authorities and helping to ensure the safety of the home’s elderly owner. At approximately 02:10 officers from the Samut Prakan Police Station received an emergency call about a house fire. Local fire trucks and rescue teams from Bang Pu Municipality and the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were quickly dispatched. On arrival, they encountered intense flames engulfing the house, with thick smoke billowing into the night. Firefighters worked for over an hour to bring the fire under control, but the blaze had already consumed the entire structure. The 71-year-old homeowner, Ms. Chalor, who has some hearing impairments, recounted that she was asleep upstairs when awoken by the commotion outside and she detected a strong odour of smoke. Alarmed, she made her way downstairs to discover flames spreading from the lower level. Fleeing through a nearby window assisted by her neighbours, she escaped unharmed, though visibly shaken. She reported having no gas appliances in use inside the home, relying only on a charcoal stove outside, and had only her refrigerator plugged in. Neighbour Ms. Thanida, 29, who owns the American Bully dog that initially detected the fire, explained how her dog’s persistent barking alerted her and her partner. When they went outside, they saw flames erupting next door. “We quickly called the authorities, helped Ms Chalor and tried to contain the fire with a garden hose, but the flames were too intense and spread quickly,” Ms. Thanida explained. Though the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, heavy rains and thunderstorms were reported in the area that night. Ms. Chalor suspects the fire might have been triggered by lightning. However, other neighbours, including Mr. Arun, 56, who was also woken by the commotion, noted that while it was raining lightly, he didn’t recall hearing any thunder or lightning. Authorities have secured the scene and documented evidence. Further investigation, including a forensic assessment, is underway to determine the precise cause of the fire. Pattaya: Burmese Man’s Disturbance Keeps Entire Area Awake A man, believed to be either mentally unstable or under the influence of drugs, was reportedly causing a disturbance behind residential homes, upsetting locals and disrupting the community’s peace. Pattaya’s Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Centre received a distress call at approximately 22.05 on October 29, from residents in Soi Sukhumvit 27, Naklua Sub-district, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. A man, believed to be either mentally unstable or under the influence of drugs, was reportedly causing a disturbance behind residential homes, upsetting locals and disrupting the community’s peace. The rescue team coordinated with Bang Lamung police and volunteer responders to address the situation. Arriving at the scene, officials discovered a foreign man, later identified as Burmese and estimated to be between 20-30 years old. The man was behaving erratically, screaming loudly from within a muddy canal, alarming nearby residents, including families, children, and elderly individuals. His loud cries echoed throughout the area, preventing many from getting any peace. Upon arrival, rescue workers attempted to persuade the man to come out of the water and cease his disruptive behaviour. Despite efforts to calm him, he continued his screaming, showing no response to the rescue team’s pleas. As officials searched for any friends or relatives who might assist, nearby migrant workers grew increasingly anxious, fearing police involvement. A group of Burmese workers eventually took matters into their own hands, jumping into the canal, restraining the man, and reprimanding him, reportedly in Burmese. Though onlookers couldn’t understand the words, it was believed they scolded him for attracting police attention. After briefly disciplining him, the workers handed him over to the authorities, restoring calm to the area. Ms. Nuchada Saenkhampan, a 26-year-old resident, explained, “At first, we were frightened by the strange noises. But after listening closely, we realised it was a person and began searching for the source. Once we located him in the canal, we feared he might be in danger, so we contacted officials for help.” Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-30

Authorities Raid 11 Locations Linked to Gambling Network That Hacked Government Websites In a major operation against online gambling networks, officials from Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation’s Technology and Information Division conducted coordinated raids at 11 locations across Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, and Chonburi. In a major operation against online gambling networks, officials from Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation’s Technology and Information Division conducted coordinated raids at 11 locations across Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, and Chonburi. The network allegedly hacked government websites to embed links to gambling platforms, impacting 23 agencies. Police Lieutenant Colonel Khemchat, Director of the Technology and Information Division, confirmed the scale of the breach, noting that hundreds more government agencies may have been similarly targeted. Authorities are working to determine if these incidents are connected to the same network. The raids focused on three main groups within the operation: the technical management team, network managers, and account handlers. The operation uncovered four primary gambling sites, involving over 20 billion baht in transactions, with more than 100 bank accounts and numerous digital currency accounts linked to the network. No arrests have been made thus far. Instead, the investigation focused on gathering digital evidence to locate the gambling network’s base and track individuals involved, which are both Thai and Chinese nationals. Police Colonel Natthakrit Phromchan, Director of the National Cyber Security Agency’s Infrastructure Division, reported that nearly 1,000 government agencies have been targeted by similar hacks in the past year. The gambling network exploited vulnerabilities to place backlinks, making gambling sites more visible on search engines like Google. Although no confidential data was compromised, this breach highlights significant weaknesses in the cybersecurity of government websites. Authorities are now working closely with affected agencies to strengthen their systems and close security gaps, with plans to enhance both technological measures and personnel expertise to prevent future breaches.
