The discovery was made on October 28, when a 53-year-old van driver, identified as Mr. Ekgarat from Si Racha, Chonburi, was found dead inside his vehicle at a gas station within Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province. Police have preliminarily attributed the cause of death to an underlying health condition, but have not yet ruled out the possibility of foul play. The discovery was made around 10:00 when Police Lieutenant Colonel Thananchai Suebsrikacharat, an investigator from Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station, along with forensic officers, airport security, and rescue volunteers, responded to the scene. The white Toyota van was parked with the engine running. Inside, they found Mr. Ekgarat slumped in the driver’s seat, leaning against the door. Medical examiners estimate he had been deceased for approximately six to eight hours, with no visible signs of injury or foul play. Mr. Prayoon, an employee at the gas station, provided insight into the events leading up to the discovery. According to him, the van had arrived to refuel around 22.00, the previous night, after which the driver requested to park and rest. In the morning, a housekeeper attempted to wake him but assumed he was asleep and left him undisturbed. Later, around 09.00, Mr. Prayoon knocked on the window again, only to find the driver unresponsive and cold to the touch. He promptly notified authorities. Mr. Patcharin, the vehicle owner and Mr. Ekgarat’s employer, explained that the driver had been employed for just over a month and had reported frequent illnesses. The previous evening, Mr. Ekgarat called to report that he was running out of fuel. Mr. Ekgarat was instructed to refuel the vehicle and leave it at the station, as he intended to take a bus home to Chonburi the following morning. The collision also injured two other drivers. The accident occurred around 23:00 at the Khlong Ha intersection on Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road. Police officers and rescue personnel from the Por Tek Tung Foundation were dispatched to the scene. The impact crushed the front of Supeerajak’s car and sent the delivery van into a barrier before colliding with a black Isuzu pickup and another white Toyota Altis, causing damage to all vehicles. Rescue workers used extraction tools to free Supeerajak’s body from the wreckage. Supeerajak, a 21-year-old third-year engineering student, was pronounced dead at the scene. 14. In a tense rescue operation, the police chief of Nakhon Ratchasima City, Colonel Sutthinan Kongchamdee, saved a young woman who was attempting to jump from a pedestrian bridge. The intervention unfolded at 19:30 on October 27, on Highway 2 (Mittraphap Road) near Nakhon Ratchasima Municipal School. Colonel Sutthinan responded to a distress call about a woman, identified as Ms. Pim, a 23-year-old from Nakhon Si Thammarat, sitting precariously on the edge of the bridge with her legs dangling and clutching a fruit knife. From a height of approximately 5.5 metres, she warned passersby not to approach, threatening to jump if anyone came close. Police officers cordoned off the area, urging onlookers to refrain from taking photos or videos of the scene. Emergency response volunteers and plainclothes officers began negotiating with Ms. Pim, working to keep her calm while requesting a safety air cushion from the Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality’s disaster prevention team. Authorities called in Ms. Pim’s boyfriend, who works in a local market, hoping he could help dissuade her from making the attempt. Despite over 40 minutes of negotiation, Ms. Pim remained steadfast and visibly distressed. Noticing that she began shifting position to relieve her legs, Colonel Sutthinan seized the opportunity, swiftly restraining her. Officers nearby immediately moved in, securing the knife and bringing Ms. Pim to safety. The boyfriend later revealed that Ms. Pim had been under immense emotional strain, having recently overdosed on medication, which had resulted in an emergency hospital visit just the day before. Before the incident, she had an argument with family members over financial issues, which seemed to have contributed to her distress. Thankfully, the quick actions of Colonel Sutthinan and his team prevented a tragedy, bringing Ms. Pim safely back from the edge. The suspect, identified as Mr. Su Zhenfeng, a Chinese citizen, was found in possession of 95 counterfeit 1,000-baht bills. The arrest took place on October 27, after the police were alerted by the market’s radio communication centre around 15:45. Officers, led by Police Colonel Phuwadol Unphothi, Chief of Bang Sue Police Station, arrived at the scene following a report from a local shop owner. Patcharanat Somboonserm, the owner of a sunglasses stall, claimed that Mr. Su had attempted to buy a pair of sunglasses priced at 200 baht, handing over a 1,000-baht note for payment. Upon closer inspection, Mr. Patcharanat realised the banknote was counterfeit and promptly notified the authorities. Upon arrival, officers conducted a search of Mr. Su and uncovered 95 counterfeit 1,000-baht notes. All the notes carried the same serial number, 7J 4556865, and bore the word “COPY” on the watermark area on the reverse side. The police seized the counterfeit currency as evidence and escorted Mr. Su to Bang Sue Police Station. Since Mr. Su does not understand Thai, a translator was called in. During questioning, Mr. Su denied knowing the banknotes were fake, insisting that he used the notes unaware of their counterfeit nature. Despite his denial, authorities have informed him of his rights and the charges against him, which he continues to contest. The case is now under further investigation by the Bang Sue Police Station to determine the source of the counterfeit currency and assess whether Mr. Su is part of a larger operation. 24. A landlord in Pattaya was shocked early morning on October 27, when he discovered what appeared to be an explosive device marked with mystical symbols hidden in a wardrobe in his rental property. The incident, which took place at a two-story rental room in Soi Naklua 27, was reported at 02:35 to Pol. Col. Navin Teerawit, Chief of Pattaya City Police Station. Upon receiving the report, a team of officers from Pattaya City Police Station, community police volunteers, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit from Chonburi rushed to the scene. The suspected explosive device, resembling an M67 grenade painted in gold with mystical inscriptions, was carefully moved outside and placed under a tyre with police barriers set up to prevent public access. Local residents, visibly alarmed, watched anxiously as authorities assessed the situation. According to Mr. Yossiri Thirapong, the 50-year-old landlord, he had recently evicted his tenant, a migrant from the Tai Yai community, due to disturbances involving loud and noisy gatherings. After the tenant vacated, Mr. Yossiri entered the room to clean and repair it for the next occupant, only to find the suspicious device tucked away in a wardrobe. He immediately contacted authorities. Pol. Sub. Lt. Pongphuchis Supharatchatapong, Deputy Inspector of Chonburi Police Investigation, examined the object and confirmed it was a fake device filled with gunpowder from small bullets. Although the device could ignite when lit, it lacked the ability to explode. Authorities noted the design appeared to mimic a real explosive, cautioning youth and individuals against attempting to create imitation bombs, as mistakes could lead to severe injuries. The device has been logged as evidence and will be safely disposed of by the EOD team. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-28
