Authorities in Mukdahan were shocked after discovering the headless body of a 15-year-old boy floating in a neighbour's pond. The teenager's family remains suspicious about the cause of death, particularly since he had recently argued with his mother before disappearing from home. On October 23, Police Lieutenant Supakrit Noranim, a deputy investigator at Muang Mukdahan Police Station, was notified of the floating corpse in a pond at Ban Dan Kham, Mukdahan District. Officers, along with a rescue team and doctors from Mukdahan Hospital, arrived at the scene to investigate. The victim was found floating face-down in the pond, near the shore, wearing only black-and-blue tracksuit pants. His body was heavily decomposed, with skin appearing to have been damaged by fish. Upon removing the body from the water, it was clear that the head and right arm were missing. Initial examinations suggested that the boy had been dead for up to, approximately 14 days. The pond's owner recalled noticing a yellow jacket hanging on a fence two weeks prior, recognising it as belonging to her neighbour, Mrs. Ratchanee. After contacting Mrs. Ratchanee, she confirmed the jacket was hers and had been worn by her 15- year-old son, referred to as "A" (name withheld). Mrs. Ratchanee did not suspect anything wrong at the time, though her son had been missing after an argument with her. At the time of his disappearance, Mrs. Ratchanee assumed her son was staying at a friend's house, which he occasionally did. However, once authorities linked the body to the missing boy, Mrs. Ratchanee was called to identify the remains. After viewing the body, she confirmed it was indeed her son, who had been missing for over ten days. The police, together with doctors from Mukdahan Hospital, conducted an examination and are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of death. The family is awaiting further answers, with the deceased's aunt, Ms. Nittaya, 43, expressing doubt about the circumstances surrounding her nephew's death. Simultaneously, rescue teams worked to search for the missing head and arm in the pond. Despite efforts, the search had to be called off due to darkness. However, operations resumed on October 24, with a large water pump being installed to drain the pond. The missing body parts were eventually recovered by 12:30. The police are now focusing on solving this tragic case while returning the remains to the family. The boy's aunt, who had raised him for over a decade, still harbours doubts and urges authorities to uncover the truth behind her nephew's mysterious death. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-25

Man Burns Down Own House in a Fit of Jealousy Over Missed Government Handout A 56-year-old man in Buriram province set fire to his own home after becoming intoxicated and expressing frustration over not receiving a government handout, while others in his community enjoyed financial aid of 10,000 baht. A 56-year-old man in Buriram province set fire to his own home after becoming intoxicated and expressing frustration over not receiving a government handout, while others in his community enjoyed financial aid of 10,000 baht. The incident occurred in Don Mai Fai village, Moo 7, Tapek Subdistrict, Chalerm Phrakiat District. Pol. Lt. Apicha Tiangprakhon, an investigating officer at Chalerm Phrakiat Police Station, received a report of a fire at a house and called local fire trucks to extinguish the blaze. Upon arrival, authorities found flames engulfing the wooden and concrete house, located at 184 Moo 7. Firefighters struggled to contain the blaze as the narrow roads prevented their vehicles from reaching the property easily. It took about an hour to fully extinguish the fire, by which time the house and its contents had been completely destroyed. The homeowner, Mr. Jaturong Kasornnuan, 56, was found sitting nearby in a heavily intoxicated state. When questioned by authorities, he admitted to setting the fire himself using a lighter. He cited frustration over various issues in his life, including the need to work manual labour to support himself, while others in the village received free money from the government and enjoyed themselves. Jaturong’s brother, Mr. Manop Kasornnuan, 48, revealed that the two brothers lived in the house with their elderly mother. Earlier that day, Jaturong had asked their mother for money to buy cigarettes and alcohol, but she had none to give. This led him to start complaining and showing signs of agitation. He first attempted to set fire to the bottom of the house, which Manop managed to put out. However, just minutes later, Jaturong went upstairs and set another fire, which quickly spread and consumed the entire house before it could be stopped. This was not the first time Jaturong had set fire to the family home. Manop explained that his brother had previously been jailed after setting fire to the house in a similar drunken incident. This time, the damage was much worse, leaving the family unsure of how they would rebuild or find shelter. Pol. Col. Wisit Buasangwong, Chief of Chalerm Phrakiat Police Station, confirmed that while no charges have been filed yet, the police are awaiting forensic results. If it is determined that the fire was deliberately set, Jaturong could face criminal charges. For now, he is being held at the police station to sober up. Local authorities will assess the situation for potential assistance, though issues of alcohol-related violence have been increasingly common in the area, prompting the need for a coordinated response from various agencies to find long-term solutions. The crash took place at 21:00 on October 24, when a drunk driver lost control of his pickup truck and crashed into a roadside noodle shop in Udon Thani, killing one person and seriously injuring nine others. The incident occurred near the entrance to the underpass at the Kaenoi junction, in front of the former Udon Thani Transport Office. Police Lt. Pira Rasri, an investigator from the Udon Thani Police Station, was notified of the crash and coordinated with Udon Thani Hospital medical staff and rescue teams to rush to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a black 4-door pickup truck had crashed into a food cart, destroying tables, chairs, and food stalls selling noodles, rice, and other items. The collision left one customer dead at the scene, identified as Mr. Chatchai, aged 51. Nine others were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital by rescue teams. Witnesses reported that during the rescue, one severely injured person pleaded for help for his child trapped under the truck. Rescuers used equipment to lift the vehicle and safely pulled the child from under it, immediately sending the child to the hospital. The driver of the pickup, identified as 21-year-old Kiatthisak, surrendered to the authorities. A breathalyser test showed his alcohol level over the limit and his vehicle was found to have an expired tax registration. The police have initially charged Kiatthisak with reckless driving causing death. Observers noted that he also appeared to be under the influence of drugs, prompting local residents to demand a urine test. Some in the crowd attempted to assault him, leading to a chaotic scene that police had to control. Ms. Ruedee, 42, the sister of the deceased, happened to pass by the scene and stopped to check the accident. She was devastated to discover that her brother was the victim. Through tears, she recalled that earlier in the day, her brother had mentioned nearly getting into an accident due to a loose wheel nut, but she never thought it would lead to this tragedy. The aunt of the driver also arrived at the scene after hearing of the crash and angrily confronted her nephew, blaming him for taking drugs and causing the fatal accident. She was heard yelling, “I told you not to drive! Now you’ve killed someone! You deserve to go to jail!” before attempting to assault him. Kiatthisak, speaking about the incident, claimed that he was on his way to pick up his mother from work. He said he blacked out after driving through the underpass and only realised what had happened after the crash. He expressed deep remorse and apologised to the victim’s family, saying that if he could turn back time, he would never have driven. Pictures from responders. -- 2024-10-25

Tensions in Southern Thailand: Car Bomb Injures 2 Officers, Linked to Tak Bai Anniversary Pattani, the southern border region was rocked by a violent car bombing incident. Authorities suspect the attack may be linked to the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Tak Bai incident. Pattani, the southern border region was rocked by a violent car bombing incident in the early of October 24. Armed insurgents stole a vehicle and planted explosives, setting off a car bomb that left two security officers injured. Authorities suspect the attack may be linked to the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Tak Bai incident, a pivotal event in the region’s history. At approximately 12:30, Pol. Col. Chaiwat Panbunthong, Superintendent of Panare Police Station in Pattani, received a report that a group of insurgents had hijacked a vehicle and used it in a car bomb attack on the road between the Panare Police Station and the district office in Ban Panare, Pattani. Initial investigations revealed that the explosion caused significant damage to the police station building, government property, and several vehicles, including both cars and motorcycles. Fortunately, all police officers were unharmed, though two civil defense volunteers who were on duty at the time suffered injuries. Both officers, whose names have not yet been released, were rushed to Panare Hospital, suffering from chest pain due to the blast’s shockwave. According to reports, the stolen vehicle was a grey Mitsubishi Triton, license plate from Pattani, which had been taken from the Ban Nam Bo sub-district administrative organisation (SAO) earlier in the evening. The attackers, numbering between 8-10, overpowered and tied up four SAO employees on duty before seizing the vehicle and rigging it with explosives. The car bomb was detonated on the road between the police station and the district office, causing extensive damage to both government buildings. The area has been sealed off by security forces, who are working to ensure it is safe for bomb disposal units to conduct a thorough investigation. Authorities believe the attack was orchestrated by insurgents seeking to stir unrest in the region, coinciding with the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Tak Bai incident. The Tak Bai case, a tragic event in 2004 where 85 demonstrators died following a crackdown, remains a deeply sensitive issue in southern Thailand. With the statute of limitations for the case nearing its end, officials suspect that insurgent groups are using the anniversary to fuel tensions. The investigation is ongoing, and security measures have been heightened across the region as authorities brace for possible further incidents. Pictures from the scene. -- 2024-10-24

A shooting occurred in the Om Noi area of Krathum Baen District, Samut Sakhon at around 00.30 on October 24. A lone gunman followed and shot a motorcycle repairman while he was riding home on his motorbike. The incident took place at a three-way junction in Soi Phetkasem 97, near the Liap Khlong Om Noi Road. Local police, led by Pol. Col. Theeradej Athipakkul, Deputy Superintendent of Samut Sakhon Provincial Police, and other authorities quickly responded to the scene. The victim was identified as Mr. Chanchai Noicharoen, 43, a resident of Om Noi. He was found lying in a pool of blood, his helmet nearby, along with his black Honda motorbike. Police discovered three 9mm bullet casings on the ground, and an examination of the body revealed gunshot wounds to the head, left chest, and back. A woman who had been riding as a passenger on Mr. Chanchai’s motorcycle at the time of the shooting was unharmed. Police took her for questioning in hopes of gaining leads on the attacker. Witnesses reported seeing Mr. Chanchai’s motorbike being followed by another motorcycle just before the shooting. They initially paid little attention, as the area typically sees a lot of motorbike traffic. However, at the three-way junction, both bikes slowed down, and a brief conversation occurred between Mr. Chanchai and the shooter. Suddenly, the attacker, who had not covered his face, drew a gun and fired three shots, causing Mr. Chanchai to collapse. The female passenger jumped off the bike at the first shot but stayed close to witness the scene. Startled bystanders scattered after the shots rang out, and none saw the full sequence of events. After the assailant fled, locals called the police, but when rescue workers arrived, it was too late to save Mr. Chanchai’s life. The victim’s parents said their son worked as a motorcycle mechanic in the Phutthamonthon Sai 5 area and returned home late every night. Recently, he had been picking up his girlfriend after work. They expressed shock and confusion, as their son had never mentioned any conflicts or threats. Pol. Col. Theeradej ordered investigators to review CCTV footage to trace the gunman’s route and identify his escape. Witnesses and the female passenger are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. Mr. Chanchai’s body has been sent for further examination at Siriraj Hospital’s Forensic Institute. The homeowner, Mrs. Saifon Khuras, 51, said she heard the cries of a baby early morning on October 24. A fatal collision occurred in the early hours of October 23 in Chanthaburi, when a motorcyclist driving against traffic was struck by an SUV, leading to the rider’s death and causing injuries to the SUV driver after the vehicle overturned. The incident took place on Raksak Chamuon Road, as the motorcyclist, identified as 30-year-old Suradet (surname withheld), was riding in the wrong direction. The SUV, a white Toyota Fortuner with Bangkok plates, lost control after the collision, flipped over the median, and came to rest on the opposite side of the road. The driver of the SUV, a man who sustained leg injuries, was trapped in the wreckage. Rescue workers used specialised equipment to free him and rushed him to Phra Pokklao Hospital. Suradet was found dead approximately 30 metres from the collision site, lying near a streetlight in the road’s median. His motorcycle, severely damaged and broken in half, was located in the left lane of the outbound road. Initial investigations by local police revealed that Suradet was riding his motorcycle against the flow of traffic after leaving a convenience store near Sirikarn Temple. He was likely attempting to make a U-turn when the speeding SUV, heading in the correct direction, collided with him. The impact threw both Suradet and his motorcycle in different directions, killing him instantly. Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage and dash-cam recordings from the area to determine the exact cause of the incident and gather more evidence to complete the investigation. In a high-profile operation, authorities arrested the head of the land survey division in Chonburi for allegedly demanding under-the-table payments from contractors. The arrest, carried out at the Chonburi Provincial Land Office, revealed a system of bribes where every housing project had to pay kickbacks ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 baht per house. At 15:15 on October 23, Mr. Phumvisal Kasemsuk, Secretary-General of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), led a joint operation with various government officials, including Pol. Lt. Col. Siripong Sritula, Deputy Secretary-General of PACC, Ms. Arpornnee Semrasut, Director of the Public Sector Corruption Suppression Division 1, and several high-ranking police officers. They apprehended the suspect under a warrant issued by the Region 2 Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct. The suspect faces four charges: 1. Demanding or accepting bribes or other benefits in exchange for performing or not performing official duties. 2. Abusing official power to cause damage to others or acting corruptly. 3. Misuse of official authority for personal gain. 4. Demanding illegal payments as a government official. The arrest followed a complaint from a housing developer in Mueang Chonburi District, who claimed the suspect demanded 50,000 baht for surveying and issuing land titles for 25 plots of land at a rate of 2,000 baht per plot. After receiving this tip-off, the PACC coordinated with the Anti-Corruption Police (ACPD) and the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to gather evidence, leading to the court-issued arrest warrant. During the arrest, the suspect allegedly defended the payments as “standard fees” applied to all land subdivisions. Officials are now expanding their investigation, seeking evidence of similar bribes from other developers. Several other developers have confirmed that it is common practice to pay bribes to officials for project approvals, significantly increasing the cost of homes by as much as 100,000 to 200,000 baht. These additional costs are often passed on to homebuyers. The PACC is now considering proactive measures to prevent such widespread corruption in the housing industry. Authorities will continue their investigation, with further charges possible as more evidence is uncovered. Picture courtesy of PACC -- 2024-10-23
