  3. In the early hours of October 16, a high-speed car chase turned into a terrifying crash in Amnat Charoen, leaving two individuals seriously injured. A white Mazda car, being pursued by two or three pickup trucks, lost control and crashed into a roadside utility pole. The force of the impact caused the car to flip multiple times, ejecting both passengers from the vehicle. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of men, dressed in what appeared to be plainclothes and similar to law enforcement officers, had been driving the pickup trucks in pursuit of the car. After the crash, they stopped at the scene to inspect the wreckage. The car’s rear and driver’s side were severely damaged, with both rear wheels folded inward. The two individuals inside, whose identities remain unknown as no documents were found on them, sustained critical injuries. Rescue workers from the Phetkasem Foundation quickly transported them to Amnat Charoen Hospital. Witnesses at the scene stated that the chase had originated in Mukdahan and was heading toward Amnat Charoen city. The crash occurred on a downhill section near the entrance to the local bus station. The car had been traveling at high speed, with no indication of slowing down, before it veered off the road and struck the utility pole, sending the vehicle airborne and across lanes. Initial speculation suggested that the incident may have been caused by a loss of control. However, the presence of the pursuing pickups, along with the behavior of the men who arrived on the scene, has raised questions about whether the crash resulted from an attempted apprehension or a chase gone wrong. Authorities from the Amnat Charoen Police Station are currently investigating, gathering evidence and witness statements to determine the cause of the incident and any potential legal actions to follow. 4. Pol. Col. Adirek Thongkamkaew, Superintendent of Bangkaew Police Station, along with Lt. Chanat Thep-lao, Deputy Inspector of Investigations, forensic medical staff from Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital, and Ruamkatanyu Foundation volunteers, responded to the scene of a fatal incident involving a container lift at approximately 15.30 on October 16, in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan. The deceased, identified as Mr. Saichon Janthon, 52, from Watthana Nakhon District, Sa Kaeo Province, was found with severe head injuries and a fractured right ankle. Despite CPR efforts by emergency responders, Mr. Saichon was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses, including Mr. Jaran Kamsuwan, a coworker of the deceased, stated that Mr. Saichon, a construction worker employed by a neighboring company, had been walking through the container yard after using the restroom. He was wearing headphones, listening to music, which may have prevented him from hearing the approaching container lift. As a result, he was pinned between a container being moved and another container, losing consciousness immediately. The driver of the container lift, Mr. Arthit Phuengkij, explained that he had been operating the vehicle to unload containers and stack them as usual. He did not expect anyone to be walking through the work area, as it is typically restricted. It was only after he had placed the container and reversed the vehicle that he noticed someone lying unconscious and immediately called for help. Pol. Col. Adirek has ordered a thorough investigation, including interviews with all witnesses and involved parties, to determine the exact cause of the incident. The driver of the container lift has been brought in for further questioning, while the body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem examination at the forensic institute. 18. Police officers from the Samrong Nuea Police Station were alerted at approximately 22.20 on October 15, to a fire at a rental building in Soi Dan Samrong 20, Samrong Nuea Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Prakan. Several residents were reported to have suffered from smoke inhalation, prompting an immediate response from firefighters, rescue teams, and paramedics from Samut Prakan Hospital. The fire occurred in a 5-story building with around 300 rental rooms. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the building, and rescue teams, assisted by local residents, quickly worked to evacuate the elderly and bedridden residents. Initial reports confirmed that 27 individuals were affected by smoke inhalation. First aid was provided on-site, and five of the more seriously affected victims were transported to the hospital for further treatment. Firefighters discovered that the fire originated in a room on the second floor. The blaze was quickly brought under control with water hose-lines. However, the room where the fire started was completely destroyed, and smoke had spread throughout the building. Firefighters used positive pressure fans to ventilate the structure and clear the remaining smoke. According to a neighbour living next to the room where the fire started, they heard noises and discovered flames in an unoccupied room. Smoke quickly filled the neighbouring units. Another resident on the second floor recalled hearing someone shouting about the fire, and when she opened her door, the hallway was already filled with smoke. Mr. Pichai Warin, a 31-year-old resident, attempted to use a fire extinguisher to combat the blaze but was overwhelmed by the heavy smoke. Along with a group of fellow tenants, he tried to extinguish the fire, but it quickly became too intense, forcing them to retreat and wait for the firefighters. Local village headman, Mr. Thongchai Tianbang, confirmed that the fire was contained to the second floor, with no deaths reported. Most residents affected by smoke inhalation received oxygen treatment at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation, with initial suspicions pointing to an electrical short circuit. Ms. Chitramas Chongjit, 29, the tenant of the room where the fire started, stated that she had left a fan running for her cat while she was away. She suspects that an electrical fault may have caused the fire, as the building and its electrical systems are quite old. Authorities have taken initial photos and recorded statements at the scene. A full investigation will follow to determine the exact cause of the fire and ensure appropriate legal actions are taken. Pictures from responders. -- 2024-10-16
