Picture courtesy of SiamChon. A Chinese national is in critical condition after he lost control of his high-powered motorcycle he was riding and crashed into an electricity pole early morning on 23 April, reportedly after hitting a speed bump at high speed. The accident occurred at 05:15, in Soi Chaloem Phrakiat 3, Pattaya City, Chonburi Province. The Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Pattaya rescue centre received an emergency call and immediately coordinated with Pol.Lt. Anand Mahakit-Asawakul, deputy investigation officer of Pattaya City Police Station, who rushed to the scene with rescue volunteers. Upon arrival, responders discovered a Kawasaki black superbike, bearing registration number from Bangkok, damaged after colliding with a concrete pole. Debris from the motorcycle, including shattered parts and a broken full-face helmet, was strewn across the road. Lying unconscious nearby was the victim, believed to be a male Chinese national aged between 30 and 40, with no identification documents found on him. He sustained critical injuries and was found barely breathing. Rescue personnel and medical staff administered first aid at the scene before urgently transporting him to hospital. The crash also caused damage to roadside property, including a set of tables and chairs and a makeshift awning belonging to a nearby food vendor. An eyewitness reported that the victim had been seen riding the same motorcycle through the soi multiple times during the night. Moments before the crash, he was observed riding at high speed, hitting a speed bump and subsequently losing control before slamming into the electricity pole. Both the rider and the motorcycle were thrown in opposite directions from the impact. Police at the scene secured CCTV footage showing the victim travelling at high speed immediately prior to the accident. Initial investigations confirmed that no other vehicles were involved. Authorities are continuing to investigate and are working to establish the victim’s identity. Adapted by ASEAN Now from SiamChon. -- 2025-04-23

Indian Tourist Causes Uproar at Bangkok Hotel Over Credit Card Dispute Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A furious Indian tourist caused chaos at the Holiday Inn Bangkok Silom after a heated row over a credit card payment, prompting a police response and leaving guests and staff shaken. The drama unfolded on 18 April and gaining attention in Thai social media, when the man, barefoot and wearing a “Greatest Dad Ever” T-shirt, erupted in rage at the hotel reception over what he believed to be a double charge for his room. According to eyewitnesses, including onlooker Stanley Keh Wei Shang, the man flew into a frenzy, slamming the front desk, shouting profanities, and accusing staff of theft. “He had the fury of hell in his eyes,” said Stanley. “I was impressed by how calm and respectful the staff remained under such pressure.” The confusion reportedly stemmed from a miscommunication within the tourist’s own family. A female relative, dressed in a brown shirt, had arrived two days earlier and asked the hotel to place a credit hold on her card to cover multiple rooms, including the irate man’s. However, when he checked in on 17 April, hotel staff were instructed to use his card instead for the same rooms, prompting a second credit hold of 14,626 baht. Hotel management explained that the man was not charged, only a credit limit was held. However, by the next day, upon learning of his relative’s prior payment, the man demanded an immediate refund and began shouting: “Why did you block my card? Bloody rogues, bloody thieves!” As the row escalated, other guests attempted to calm the man, but he continued to berate staff, gesturing wildly and switching between languages. His female relatives eventually tried to mediate, with one saying, “This gentleman paid for four bookings. Just because we came on different days, you can’t charge again.” Hotel staff maintained they were following the instructions given by the family at check-in. “We were told to use his card when he arrived,” a male receptionist explained. “We didn’t charge him, just held the deposit.” The dispute culminated with the arrival of Thai police, who helped calm the situation. The hotel later confirmed that the credit hold on the man’s card was cancelled and the funds were returned upon checkout. The hotel manager attributed the incident to a misunderstanding. “The woman initially authorised us to use her card, but then told us to switch to his card when he checked in. He seemed fine at the time, but later objected. We resolved it as soon as possible,” she said. The hotel has not filed any formal complaint, and no legal action has been taken. UPDATE Pattaya Police Arrest Suspect in Armed Robbery of Russian Tourist Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A Thai man has been arrested following an armed robbery involving a Russian tourist in Pattaya on the night of 20 April. The incident occurred in Soi Phra Tamnak 5, where the suspect, disguised in a bright orange motorcycle taxi vest and helmet, allegedly brandished a firearm and demanded money from a Russian woman and her Thai friend. The victim, identified only as Miss Lilita, was accompanied by her three-year-old daughter at the time of the robbery. Fearing for their safety, she handed over 3,100 baht before the suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle. Pol. Lt. Gen. Yingyos Thepjumnong, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 2, confirmed during a press briefing on 22 April that the 30-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after an investigation was launched. Officers reviewed CCTV footage across Pattaya to track the suspect’s movements, leading to the swift identification and subsequent issuance of an arrest warrant. The suspect, who has a known criminal history and was already wanted on an outstanding warrant, was taken into custody and is now facing prosecution. According to Pol. Lt. Gen. Yingyos, the man has previously committed similar offences and is considered a threat to public safety. “This suspect has repeatedly committed serious crimes, often targeting women and tourists. His actions tarnish Thailand’s reputation,” said the Commissioner. “I have directed that this case be treated with the utmost seriousness.” Pol. Lt. Gen. Yingyos also highlighted the importance of the city’s extensive CCTV network, which played a vital role in the rapid identification and capture of the suspect. He has instructed Pattaya police to step up patrols, focus on arresting individuals with outstanding warrants, and intensify efforts to combat illegal firearms and contraband. “Our priority is to safeguard both residents and visitors,” he said. “The Royal Thai Police are fully committed to protecting the public and will respond swiftly to any threat. We urge both locals and tourists to place their trust in us—we are here to ensure everyone’s safety.” The suspect remains in custody as police continue their investigation. AOT Chief Executive Kirati Resigns Amid Procurement Controversy Picture courtesy of Matichon. Mr. Kirati Kitmanawat will officially step down as President of Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) on 24 April, according to a senior source from the Ministry of Transport. His resignation, which has now been confirmed, has sparked speculation about who will take over in an acting capacity. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Mr. Kirati Kitmanawat will officially step down as President of Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) on 24 April, according to a senior source from the Ministry of Transport. His resignation, which has now been confirmed, has sparked speculation about who will take over in an acting capacity. The AOT Board of Directors, chaired by Mr. Apirat Chaiwongnoi, Director-General of the Department of Highways, is scheduled to meet on 23 April to formally acknowledge Mr. Kirati’s resignation and to discuss the appointment of an acting president. Among the frontrunners is Mr. Vim Rungwatanachinda, a current AOT board member and close ally of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Mr. Vim joined the AOT board on 26 February 2025 and also serves on the boards of the State Railway of Thailand and PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (PTTGC). Other potential candidates include current AOT Deputy Presidents: Mr. Sirote Duangrat (Business Development and Marketing), Mr. Anek Theerawiwatchai (Strategy), and Ms. Chadnisa Chamnarnwetch (Human Resources and Administration), as well as senior executives from Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang Airports. According to the Airports of Thailand Act B.E. 2522 (1979), Section 26 grants the board authority to appoint an acting president when the position becomes vacant or the incumbent is unable to perform their duties. Mr. Kirati was appointed AOT President on 24 April 2023 on a four-year contract, selected during the tenure of the previous government. Despite reports of effective collaboration with then Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s administration, particularly in efforts to restore Suvarnabhumi Airport to the world’s top 20 within five years, his tenure ends amid growing scrutiny. Suvarnabhumi recently climbed to 39th place in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2025, up from 58th in 2024, reflecting progress under Mr. Kirati’s leadership. However, speculation suggests that his resignation may be linked to allegations submitted to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) concerning irregularities in procurement processes. This includes the controversial cancellation of a wastewater treatment maintenance tender at Phuket Airport and accusations of favouritism in consultancy contracts. There have also been suggestions of lingering ties to the previous political regime. Further clarity is expected following the AOT board meeting on 23 April. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A devastating road crash in Chachoengsao province has claimed the lives of three people, including an eight-year-old boy, after a military transport truck collided with a motorcycle sidecar. One woman was also seriously injured and rushed to hospital. The incident occurred at approximately 14:30 o22 April, on Route 3481 in Moo 9, Mon Thong Subdistrict, Bang Nam Priao District. Police from Bang Khonak Station, medical personnel, and rescue teams, along with Pol. Lt. Gen. Kriengkrai Boonsorn, Chief of Chachoengsao Provincial Police, responded swiftly to the scene. Authorities found the army truck off the road in a grass verge, with the remains of the motorcycle sidecar completely destroyed and scattered across the roadside. In a nearby drainage ditch, the bodies of three victims were discovered: Mr. Rungkit, aged 25; Ms. Somchit, aged 56; and an unnamed 8-year-old boy. A fourth victim, a woman, suffered critical injuries and was immediately taken to hospital. Initial investigations revealed that the army truck was returning from a training exercise in Lopburi and heading back to its base in Koh Chan, Phanat Nikhom District, Chonburi. The military driver stated that the motorcycle with sidecar had veered across the centre line into his lane, and despite braking, he was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision. Relatives of the deceased explained that Mr. Rungkit had been driving the motorcycle sidecar, taking family members into the city of Chachoengsao to withdraw social security funds. The crash occurred as they were reportedly on their way home. The bodies have been taken to hospital for autopsy, and police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Legal proceedings will follow. Once the investigation is complete, the bodies will be released to the families for religious rites. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Khoasod. -- 2025-04-23

Wild Elephant Dies After Becoming Trapped in Kui Buri National Park Picture courtesy of Matichon. Picture courtesy of Matichon. A wild elephant believed to be between 50 and 60 years old has died after becoming trapped in a muddy waterhole in Kui Buri National Park. Authorities later discovered a bullet embedded in the animal’s body and signs of a severe internal infection, possibly contributing to its death. Mr. Anuchart Art-han, head of Kui Buri National Park, reported that on the evening of 19 April, a concerned local resident, Mr. Narong, notified park officials after spotting the elephant stuck in a muddy pool near Ban Ruam Thai, Moo 7, Hat Kham Subdistrict, Kui Buri District. The animal was still alive at the time, lying on its side in waist-deep water, struggling and raising its trunk. Park rangers attempted to locate the elephant using drones, but efforts were hampered by heavy rain and poor visibility. The following day, on 20 April, the team resumed their search and found the elephant in the same position, with slight movement in its ears, legs, and trunk. A veterinary team from the Office of Conservation Area 3 (Phetchaburi Branch) was called in to assess the elephant’s condition and assist with the rescue. The elephant died later that afternoon at around 16:30. On 21 April, officials from the park, local veterinary units, police from Yang Chum Police Station, and local district officers returned to the site to conduct a full examination of the carcass. The elephant was identified as a female weighing about 3,500 kilograms. Upon inspection, a 10 cm wound was found on the right hind leg. The elephant appeared emaciated, with cloudy eyes and pale tissue throughout the body. Using a metal detector, the team discovered foreign objects embedded in the body. A post-mortem revealed a rusted, spiral-shaped bullet and a spherical metal fragment lodged about 10 cm deep in the muscle tissue. A large abscess approximately 15 cm in diameter was also found near a knee joint, filled with pus. Signs of advanced infection were evident in the pale yellow tissue, trunk, tongue, and inner mouth lining. Officials concluded that the elephant suffered from a severe infection caused by the old, embedded bullet wound, combined with age-related immune weakness. The bullet was estimated to have been inside the elephant for over a year. Following the autopsy, the elephant’s remains were buried to prevent the potential spread of disease. Authorities continue to investigate the origin of the bullet and whether the elephant had previously been a target of poaching. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Matichon. -- 2025-04-23

Picture courtesy of Workpoint. A 34-year-old man committed suicide in an incident believed to have been triggered by drug-induced paranoia and jealousy, after he violently assaulted his wife and mistakenly believed he had killed her. The incident occurred at a rented room near a restaurant in Village 12, Thung Sukhla Subdistrict, Si Racha District, on 22 April. Police from Laem Chabang Station, led by Pol. Sub-Lt. Issarapong Thaveeyoskeerati, along with local detectives and rescue volunteers from Sawang Prateep Sri Racha Foundation, responded to the scene. Officers discovered the body of Mr Wichet, who had hanged himself with a checkered cloth tied to a ceiling fan. It was estimated he had been dead for approximately five to six hours. His 32-year-old wife recounted that an argument had erupted earlier, fuelled by Wichet’s jealousy and paranoia after using drugs. He accused her of being unfaithful and demanded she resign from her job. The confrontation escalated into violence, with Wichet striking and strangling her until she lost consciousness. When she eventually regained consciousness, she found her husband had taken his own life, apparently believing she had died from the assault and, in a moment of guilt and remorse, decided to end his own life. Police suspect that the man’s suicide was a result of this mistaken belief. His body has been transferred to Laem Chabang Hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Fourteen crew members were rescued after a dramatic fire broke out aboard a pair trawler, causing it to sink in the Gulf of Thailand. The incident, which occurred roughly 12 nautical miles from the mouth of the Tha Chin River, prompted an urgent response from maritime authorities and nearby vessels. The Marine Department confirmed that the vessel involved was the Chok Phanitkit 4, a 122.26 gross-tonne pair trawler registered under number 397502232. According to reports from the First Naval Area Command (ศรชล.ภาค 1), the fire erupted while the vessel was operating at sea, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. Coordinates placed the incident at Latitude 13° 20.260’ North and Longitude 100° 23.427’ East. Fortunately, all 14 crew members were successfully evacuated by nearby fishing boats before the situation escalated further. Initial reports confirmed that there were no serious injuries among the crew. The First Naval Area Command swiftly coordinated communications through the Navy’s “Mod Dam Navy Radio” network and alerted provincial maritime agencies, including the Samut Sakhon Maritime Enforcement Coordination Centre. An emergency response team was dispatched, and the TRN 530 patrol vessel was mobilised with portable water pumps to assist in extinguishing the fire and prevent environmental hazards. The prompt response by local mariners and coordination among naval and maritime agencies has been credited with preventing loss of life in what could have been a far more devastating maritime disaster. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A 22-year-old hotel employee lost her life on the morning of 22 April, after her motorcycle collided with the rear of a soil-carrying truck in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The victim, identified as Ms. Karittaya, was reportedly on her way to work when the fatal collision occurred. Police Lieutenant Wichan Klin-suk, an investigator with the Ao Noi Police Station, confirmed the incident took place along a rural road connecting Phetkasem Road to the Yang Sue Reservoir in Ban Nong Ya Plong, Ao Noi Subdistrict, Mueang District. Emergency responders from Sawang Prachuap Rescue Foundation and the Ao Noi Subdistrict Administrative Organisation arrived to find the victim lying deceased on the road. She had suffered severe head trauma. Her motorcycle, bearing Prachuap Khiri Khan registration, was found wrecked at the rear of a large soil transport truck, registered in Narathiwat province. According to relatives, Ms. Karittaya had just left home and was en route to her job at a hotel in central Prachuap Khiri Khan. Witness accounts suggest that the soil truck had exited from a roadside excavation site and abruptly cut across her path, leaving her no time to brake. The grieving family expressed outrage, raising concerns over ongoing excavation operations in the area. “There have been numerous near-accidents before,” one relative said. “We don’t even know if these digging and soil transport activities are properly authorised. They’ve caused constant disruption and danger for local residents.” Authorities have launched a formal investigation and are working to determine whether the excavation activities were being conducted legally and if negligence contributed to the fatal crash. The victim’s body has been transferred to hospital for further examination, and will later be released to the family for funeral rites. Police have vowed to pursue legal proceedings where appropriate. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Khaosod. -- 2025-04-23
