Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 34-year-old Canadian man has been arrested on the island of Koh Phangan for illegally operating an electric scooter rental business, authorities confirmed on 20 April. Acting on a tip-off from a tourist, officers from Koh Phangan Tourist Police raided a property in the Sri Thanu area (Moo 8, Koh Phangan subdistrict), where they found 15 unregistered electric scooters being rented out to tourists. The man, referred to by police only as Mr A, was arrested at the scene. Officials stated that Mr A was working without a legal permit and had been running the rental business in violation of the law. Surveillance revealed a steady stream of foreign tourists entering and exiting the premises, often paying cash to rent the vehicles directly from Mr A. The shop operated under the name “DREAM”, with online services promoted as “3 Wheel Scooter Rentals Phangan.” Mr A later confessed during questioning that he was on a tourist visa and knew he was not permitted to work in Thailand. Nonetheless, he admitted to setting up the business and using a Thai-registered company, Dream Creative Co., Ltd., as a front to evade scrutiny. Rental rates were reported to be 600 baht per day, 2,900 baht per week, and 10,000 baht per month. In addition to the scooter rentals, Mr A also confessed to renting out villas and private accommodation on the island, though he admitted that the scooter rental business had proven more lucrative and had become his primary focus. Authorities seized all related assets and are pursuing further investigations into other potentially illegal business activities connected to the suspect. Mr A has been taken into custody and will face legal proceedings under Thai immigration and labour laws. Further action is being taken to identify any associates and to scrutinise linked businesses on the island. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Matichon. -- 2025-04-21

Picture courtesy of Daily News. In response to widespread social media reports that dozens of tourists were targeted by pickpocket gangs during Pattaya’s Wan Lai Festival, local police have clarified that only 12 official complaints were filed over the celebrations. On the 20 April, Pol. Col. Prawit Chorseng, Superintendent of Pattaya City Police Station, stated that between 19 and 20 April, police received 12 formal reports of theft, 10 from foreign tourists and 2 from Thai nationals. Most of the stolen items were mobile phones kept in waterproof pouches, commonly used during Songkran festivities. The police chief emphasised that the reported incidents were relatively few considering the massive crowds, estimated in the tens of thousands, that gathered in Pattaya for the annual water festival. He noted that the number of thefts was lower than in previous years. Pol. Col. Prawit also stressed that both the Chonburi Provincial Police and Pattaya Police Station had deployed extensive security measures to safeguard tourists and ensure smooth celebrations. “We have taken strict measures to protect people and support the public during this major tourism event,” he said. Despite the smaller number of reports, police are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining Pattaya’s image as a welcoming tourist destination. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has arrested a prominent Chinese businessman, on 19 April, in connection with an alleged nominee shareholding arrangement linked to the collapsed 30-storey State Audit Office building, which was under construction by China Railway No. 10 (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Mr. Chuanling Zhang, a key shareholder and director of the company, was apprehended at a luxury hotel in Bangkok’s Ratchadaphisek area after being under surveillance for two days. He was taken into custody following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Criminal Court under Sections 37 and 41 of the Foreign Business Act B.E. 2542 (1999), which prohibits foreign nationals from using Thai nominees to circumvent business ownership restrictions. DSI chief Pol. Lt. Col. Yutthana Praedam revealed that the arrest comes as part of Special Case No. 32/2568, which was opened after an earthquake caused the collapse of the State Audit Office tower during its construction. Investigations uncovered evidence of potential nominee violations, prompting the court to issue arrest warrants for four individuals: Mr. Zhang and three Thai nationals, Mr. Manas Srianan, Mr. Prajoub Sirikhet, and Mr. Sophon Meechai, who are suspected of acting as nominee shareholders. According to company records, China Railway No. 10 (Thailand) Co., Ltd. is a joint venture with Italian-Thai Development PCL and lists 51% Thai ownership, broken down as follows: Mr. Sophon Meechai (40.7997%), Mr. Prajoub Sirikhet (10.2%), and Mr. Manas Srianan (0.0003%). Mr. Zhang holds the remaining 49% as a Chinese national. At the time of his arrest, Mr. Zhang was reportedly surprised by the warrant and requested the presence of an interpreter, who also serves as his legal counsel. He was later escorted to DSI headquarters on Chaeng Watthana Road for further questioning and official booking. Authorities are continuing to search for the three Thai nationals implicated in the case, who are believed to have facilitated the alleged nominee arrangement. The investigation remains ongoing, with further legal proceedings expected. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Matichon. -- 2025-04-20

The incident occurred at approximately 13:25 on 19 April, along the parallel inbound carriageway of Phetkasem Road, kilometre marker 146, in Nong Prong Subdistrict, Khao Yoi District, Phetchaburi Province. Police Lieutenant Sombat Yodsithisak, Investigating Officer at Khao Yoi Police Station, received reports of a collision involving a red four-door pickup truck and a stationary 10-wheeler lorry. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they discovered the pickup had crashed into the rear of the parked lorry with such force that it was severely crumpled. Inside the wreckage, emergency responders found the lifeless bodies of three individuals: Mr. Natthaphong, 38, Ms. Sriwimon, 37, and Mrs. Manya, 67. Rescue workers battled for over an hour to extract their bodies from the mangled vehicle. A baby, just eight months old, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the lorry had been parked on the roadside while the driver went into a convenience store. The pickup, believed to be returning from a family holiday in southern Thailand, collided at speed into the stationary vehicle’s rear. Picture courtesy of Daily News. Residents of a village in Nakhon Luang district, Ayutthaya, were left shaken after a disturbing incident in which a 24-year-old man was caught masturbating in public late at night. The event occurred on the night of 18 April, along a road connecting the Chae O Market and Wat Mai Chumphon in Moo 2, Nakhon Luang Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. According to a Facebook post that quickly went viral, the young man arrived on a motorcycle, stripped naked by the roadside in a residential area, and began pleasuring himself without concern for passersby. After finishing the act, the man dressed and fled the scene on his motorbike. The explicit footage, posted by a local resident identified as Mr. Chanapai Kitwanni, 37, sparked widespread outrage and fear within the community. Mr. Chanapai recounted that around 23:30 while riding his motorbike home, he initially thought the man was hunting for field rats along the roadside. However, as he approached, it became shockingly clear the man was naked and engaged in a lewd act. Mr. Chanapai quickly sounded his horn, drove past, then returned to film the incident as evidence. He also shouted at the man to leave, prompting the individual to hastily redress and speed away. Residents, particularly women and parents, expressed concern over the safety of the dark and secluded area. Fearing that future encounters might lead to more serious crimes, locals circulated the footage in community warning groups and called on police to take swift action. In response, Pol. Col. Chanapak Suwannachuen, superintendent of Nakhon Luang Police Station, ordered an immediate investigation. A team led by Pol. Lt. Col. Kittipong Kitkaojaroenkul and Pol. Lt. Col. Napoldej Pakahuan soon identified the suspect. The man, referred to only as “Mr. C” for privacy reasons, was apprehended at his home in Bang Rakam subdistrict on 19 April. He admitted to being the person in the video, claiming he acted out of impulsiveness and a lack of self-control. Police seized the motorbike used during the incident and conducted a drug test, which returned negative. Mr. C has since been handed over to investigators for legal proceedings. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. In a shocking act of domestic violence, a Thai army sergeant allegedly shot and killed his 28-year-old wife in their bedroom in the early hours of the morning, reportedly in a fit of jealousy. The incident took place in the presence of their young child. The incident occurred at approximately 00:50 on 20 April in a single-storey home in the Jed Samian subdistrict of Photharam, Ratchaburi province. Police Lieutenant Colonel Chatchawan Chantawong of Photharam Police Station responded to the report, accompanied by senior officers, forensic teams, hospital staff, and rescue workers. Upon arrival, officers found the lifeless body of Ms. Natthaya aged 28, lying on the bed in her nightwear, surrounded by a pool of blood. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound from a 9mm handgun, with the bullet entering below her left eye and exiting through the back of her head. A spent shell casing was recovered from a shelf above the bed. The suspected gunman, identified as Sergeant Major Tawisak, an active-duty soldier stationed at a nearby military camp, fled the scene immediately after the shooting. However, he later contacted authorities indicating his intention to surrender. Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple had been in a long-term relationship but had recently separated due to marital issues. Tawisak reportedly suspected his wife of being unfaithful and demanded she end the alleged affair. Despite a temporary reconciliation over the recent Songkran holiday, arguments continued. On the night of the murder, Tawisak had been drinking with friends. When he called his wife to pick him up and she refused, saying she was at home with their child, he grew agitated. He asked his own mother to collect him, but before she could arrive, a friend brought him to the house. Upon entering the bedroom, another heated argument broke out. Tawisak then allegedly turned off the lights and drew a firearm. Although his younger sister, who was staying for the Songkran holidays, attempted to intervene and wrest the weapon from him, she was unsuccessful. Moments later, he fired a single shot at his wife as their child watched in horror. After fleeing the scene, Tawisak later contacted police and expressed remorse, saying he wished to turn himself in. The victim’s body has been sent to the Ratchaburi Forensic Institute for a full post-mortem examination. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Khoasod. -- 2025-04-20

A man known by the alias “Jek Thung Yai” has surrendered to police after fatally shooting a restaurant owner and his employee, following a heated dispute over a missing mobile phone that was later found lodged in a sofa. The incident occurred in the early hours of April 19 at a restaurant in Tambon Yan Yao, Sam Chuk District, Suphan Buri Province. The victims were identified as Mr. Phansiri, 35, the restaurant owner, and Mr. Alongkorn, 25, his staff member. Both men died at the scene after being shot. Investigators from Sam Chuk Police Station quickly identified the suspect as Mr. Sujaritchai, 44, of Pak Kret District in Nonthaburi Province. A manhunt was launched immediately after the shooting. At 15:00 on the same day, Mr. Sujaritchai, accompanied by his lawyer, voluntarily surrendered at Chaiyapruek Police Station in Nonthaburi. Officers from Sam Chuk Police, Suphan Buri Provincial Investigation Unit, and Region 7 detectives participated in the interrogation. The suspect’s black MG pickup truck, bearing Bangkok registration was seized in the car park of Wat Tha Kwian in Pak Kret. The firearm used in the crime was also recovered and handed over to forensic experts. According to Pol. Col. Peera Asawapiboonphon, Chief of Suphan Buri Provincial Investigation, the suspect confessed to shooting both victims. He claimed the altercation began when he returned to the restaurant to demand his missing mobile phone. An argument erupted, during which he alleged he was physically assaulted by the two men, prompting him to fire his weapon before fleeing to his residence in Pak Kret. However, a detailed police examination of the crime scene revealed that the suspect’s mobile phone had accidentally fallen into a gap between the cushions of the sofa where he had been drinking earlier. It is believed he was unaware it had dropped during the course of the evening. The suspect is now in custody and has been transferred to Sam Chuk Police Station for further legal proceedings. A local undertaker was left stunned after discovering the decomposed body of a missing monk beneath a crematorium while preparing for a funeral at a temple in Ang Thong province. Police Lieutenant Supachai Notong, a duty investigator at Pho Thong Police Station, confirmed receiving a report regarding the discovery of a body underneath the crematorium at a temple in Thang Phra Subdistrict, Pho Thong District. Authorities, including medical personnel from Pho Thong Hospital and a rescue foundation team, were dispatched to the scene for further investigation. The body was identified as Phra Wanchai, aged 60, the deputy abbot of the temple, who had been missing for nearly a month. His decomposed remains were found under the crematorium building by Mr Amnuay, a 70-year-old undertaker, who had entered the area to clean and collect ashes in preparation for a cremation scheduled the following day. “I went in to collect ashes and noticed the iron door was locked from the inside,” Mr Amnuay told police. “I used tools to cut the lock, and after collecting about two wheelbarrows of ash, I started smelling something rotten. I searched the area and was shocked to find the monk’s body lying on the ground.” Relatives of Phra Wanchai said the monk had been ordained for over 40 years and was known for his devotion to temple duties and charitable work, often overseeing cremations for the destitute free of charge. They had lost contact with him nearly a month earlier. His mobile phone was found charging in his quarters, but no one knew where he had gone. The body was sent for forensic examination to determine the exact cause of death. Police have launched an investigation, although there were no immediate signs of foul play. Two Dead, One in ICU After Consuming Drug-Laced Sweets During Songkran Festival Picture courtesy of Amarin The Ramathibodi Poison Centre has issued a warning after two individuals died and another remains in intensive care following the consumption of a street drug known colloquially as “kanom La Boo Boo” during the recent Songkran festivities in Bangkok. Picture courtesy of Amarin The Ramathibodi Poison Centre has issued a warning after two individuals died and another remains in intensive care following the consumption of a street drug known colloquially as “kanom La Boo Boo” during the recent Songkran festivities in Bangkok. The centre reported that three cases were referred for emergency toxicology consultation over the holiday period. Victims exhibited severe symptoms including unconsciousness, muscle rigidity, respiratory arrest, and cardiac failure. Two of the three patients have since died, with one still being treated in ICU. Although the exact composition of the substance is yet to be confirmed, toxicologists suspect the drug may be a dangerous cocktail combining stimulant and depressant compounds, causing a deadly synergistic effect. Authorities are awaiting laboratory results to determine the precise substances involved. Similar to the infamous “K-nom Pong” drug cocktail that emerged in 2022, this new substance appears to follow the same pattern of combining multiple narcotics to increase potency, often with fatal consequences. The Poison Centre warned that the three reported cases might only represent a fraction of the true number of affected individuals, describing the situation as “the tip of the iceberg.” Additional deaths or severe cases may still be under forensic investigation or admitted in other hospitals. The centre has notified the Office of the Narcotics Control Board and relevant academic drug networks to investigate and respond swiftly. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant. If family members or friends are known or suspected to have used drug-laced substances, especially any left over from the Songkran period, they are strongly advised not to consume them under any circumstances due to the risk of death. The case highlights growing concerns over the spread of recreational narcotics disguised as sweets or snacks at festivals and parties. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Amarin. -- 2025-04-20
