  2. Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 33-year-old construction worker sustained life-threatening injuries after being impaled by a large steel cable that snapped while lifting a rail bridge segment in the Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima. The cable pierced through his abdomen and exited his back, prompting an urgent and complex rescue operation. The incident occurred around 08:30 on 26 July, during construction on the Bangkok–Nakhon Ratchasima high-speed rail project. The victim, identified as Mr. Sakchai, a native of Udon Thani province, was employed by a subcontractor working on bridge installation. During the lifting process, a heavy-duty sling cable unexpectedly broke, striking him with force and passing entirely through his body. Emergency responders from Hook 31 Rescue Foundation in Nakhon Ratchasima were urgently contacted by doctors at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital. They were asked to deliver and operate a plasma cutter, used for precision metal cutting, to assist in the emergency treatment. The patient had initially been transferred from Pak Chong Nana Hospital due to the severity of his condition. Upon arrival at Maharat Hospital, rescue workers used the plasma cutter to carefully remove the steel cable segment protruding from the patient’s back. The operation, which lasted approximately ten minutes, was carried out with extreme caution to minimise further trauma and allow the patient to lie on his back for emergency surgery. Mr. Sakchai was then immediately transferred to the operating theatre. Following the successful surgery, he was moved to the intensive care unit at the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Building, 8th floor, where he is being monitored for recovery. As of the latest update, his condition is now considered stable. Authorities are expected to investigate the safety procedures at the construction site, particularly the condition of the lifting equipment involved in the incident. 4. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Siradonai Plaiduang, known as “Golf,” a provincial councillor (S.A.O.) for Songkhla’s District 7 (Hat Yai), has officially submitted his resignation amid ongoing controversy. He is a close associate and son of Somyos Plaiduang, deputy secretary-general of the Democrat Party and MP for Songkhla’s 3rd constituency. Siradonai was previously implicated in an incident on 11 May where he allegedly ordered subordinates to assault Police Corporal Nisatit Khetphueng, a paramilitary officer assigned to election security in Mueang Songkhla district. The accused, including Siradonai, face charges related to violently obstructing officials performing their duties with weapons and physical assault, as well as links to the illegal online gambling network WINGAME98. The case has been transferred to the Crime Suppression Division, with formal charges filed. According to reports, Siradonai submitted his resignation letter on 24 July, which has been acknowledged by Songkhla Governor Chotinrin Kerdsom and Songkhla’s local government chief Winyu Singhasame. However, local social media has criticised the delay in his resignation, over two months after the incident, during which the Songkhla Provincial Council was under heavy pressure to remove him. A special council session on 13 June voted to seek legal advice from the governor on whether the council could dismiss him without his presence to respond to allegations, but no further action was taken before the resignation. Meanwhile, a close ally of Somyos Plaiduang, Siradonai’s father and Songkhla MP, is preparing to immediately submit candidacy for the vacant provincial council seat. This individual recently resigned from their political post, having formerly worked within the Songkhla provincial administration team, to stand in the forthcoming by-election. Lt. Col. Samanuk Kulmanee, director of Songkhla’s Election Commission Office (ECO), confirmed receipt of the resignation. Under law, a by-election must be held within 60 days to fill the vacancy. The Election Commission is expected to announce the official by-election date for Songkhla’s District 7, Hat Yai, on 29 July. The commission reports it is fully prepared to conduct the election. 6. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Severe flooding in Nan province has caused significant damage to Nan Hospital, with the X-ray department among the worst-hit areas. High-value medical equipment has been left heavily damaged, prompting appeals for public donations to support recovery efforts. The situation remains critical in parts of Mueang Nan Municipality and surrounding areas following prolonged rainfall. On the morning of 26 July, Nan Governor Chainanong Wongyai posted on his personal Facebook page that water levels at the Nakhon Nan Pattana Bridge, adjacent to the hospital, had begun to recede. Authorities from the Department of Rural Roads were clearing debris from the bridge in preparation for reopening. However, some areas, particularly in Phu Phiang District, remain flooded. Images shared by the popular medical Facebook page Mor Lab Pandarevealed the extent of the destruction inside Nan Hospital’s X-ray room. Floodwaters over one metre deep inundated the facility for more than 40 hours, submerging and displacing hospital beds, chairs and medical equipment. Many items were found jammed against doors and corners throughout the building. Staff were finally able to enter the hospital on the morning of 26 July, to begin preliminary cleaning and damage assessments. However, full operations cannot resume until a thorough inspection of the building’s structure and medical equipment has been completed. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists and hospital staff continue working tirelessly under difficult conditions to ensure ongoing treatment for patients. In response to the emergency, five deceased bodies previously held at the hospital were temporarily relocated to Wat Satharas for safety reasons due to the inundation. While the total cost of the damage is yet to be calculated, it is believed to be substantial. The high-tech X-ray machinery alone represents a major financial loss. Mor Lab Panda urged the public to support the hospital during this crisis, posting: “It brings tears to my eyes seeing the X-ray room like this. Every piece of equipment is extremely expensive. If anyone is able to contribute, even a small amount, please consider donating to help Nan Hospital recover.” Authorities are continuing to monitor the flood situation and will conduct further assessments once water levels fully subside. 10. Picture courtesy of Daily News. A rare and protected black panther was spotted in the wild at Kaeng Krachan National Park, Phetchaburi, delighting park rangers and tourists alike as it calmly walked along a road and a log in the late afternoon sunshine. Mr. Mongkhon Chaipakdee, Head of Kaeng Krachan National Park, shared images and details of the encounter that took place on the evening of 25 July. The sighting occurred at kilometre 22 on the road leading up to Phanoen Thung, a popular mountain viewpoint within the park. The black panther was first seen by Mr. Busakorn Kantuk, a national park ranger, while he was clearing fallen branches along the route. To his amazement, the elusive creature emerged from the forest and appeared completely relaxed as it wandered through the area. At one point, it climbed onto a large log and stood there proudly, offering a rare and breathtaking sight for those fortunate enough to witness it. Observers noted that the panther displayed no signs of fear or agitation, moving gracefully and confidently within its natural habitat, which forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex. Park officials reminded the public and visitors to treat all wildlife with respect and caution. Mr. Mongkhon urged tourists to keep a safe distance if they encounter wild animals, especially predators such as panthers. He advised visitors to remain inside their vehicles, avoid loud noises and strictly refrain from feeding any wild animals. “Feeding wildlife may cause them to associate humans with food, potentially leading to dangerous behavioural changes,” he warned. The sighting serves as a reassuring sign of biodiversity within the park and highlights the importance of ongoing conservation efforts to protect precious and endangered species. 12. Picture courtesy of SiamRath Tourist Police in Kanchanaburi have launched a sweeping crackdown on fraudulent online pages scamming tourists into booking fake hotels, restaurants, and resorts. The operation forms part of a nationwide campaign to safeguard the tourism sector and restore trust as Thailand works to revitalise its travel industry. At 13:30 on 25 July, Police Lieutenant General Saksira Phueak-am, Commissioner of the Tourist Police Bureau, led a high-level delegation of senior officers in an inspection of Tourist Police Sub-Division 1 in Kanchanaburi. The visit followed government directives to strengthen tourist safety, suppress cybercrime and support tourism-related economic initiatives. The focus of the meeting was the escalating problem of fake Facebook pages and fraudulent websites tricking tourists into transferring payments for non-existent bookings. Some of these scams involved the unauthorised use of hotel and resort names to appear credible. Key points discussed included: • The establishment of the Tourist Safety Operations Centre (ศปทท.) • Support for the “Half-Half Thailand Travel Scheme 2025”, a government stimulus project • A targeted campaign to shut down fraudulent pages luring tourists • Enhanced operations against criminal groups exploiting the tourism industry • Moral and logistical support for frontline Tourist Police officers Senior police officials in attendance included Pol. Col. Yutthapoom Panlaiyanak, Deputy Commander of Tourist Police Region 3; Pol. Col. Praphawin Chaichomloet, Deputy Commander of the same unit; and officers from the Royal Thai Police Headquarters. They were joined by representatives from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Kanchanaburi Provincial Tourism Industry Council and local tourism business associations. During the briefing, authorities revealed that over 100 fraudulent pageshad been identified, with at least 40 real hotel names misused in scams targeting unsuspecting travellers. Investigations have led to the arrest of several suspects, while others remain under legal proceedings. Tourist Police urged tourism operators to share information and report incidents to help track and dismantle fraudulent networks. The force has also coordinated with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau to monitor suspicious activity and seek court approval for arrest warrants against those involved. Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira stated: “This issue seriously harms Thailand’s tourism image. We’ve received numerous complaints from both business owners and tourists who were duped into transferring money for bogus bookings. These scams must be eradicated, especially as we launch economic stimulus initiatives like the ‘Half-Half Travel’ scheme.” He added that any suspicious activity should be reported immediately via the Tourist Police 24-hour hotline: 1155. The meeting also included a workshop on identifying fake booking pages and staying ahead of evolving scam techniques. Business owners were encouraged to proactively monitor online impersonations and educate customers on verifying genuine platforms. Representatives such as Mr. Phanuwat Sildanchan, President of the Kanchanaburi Tourism Federation, and Ms. Chanphen Anantaphisan, Chair of the Si Sawat Tourism Association, expressed support for the police initiative and pledged to cooperate closely to protect tourists. Officials stress that stamping out digital scams is crucial to ensuring the safety and confidence of both domestic and international travellers. Adapted by Asean Now from SiamRath 2025-07-27

The victim, a former drummer of the popular Mor Lam band Lam Yai Hai Thongkham, was left critically injured. Police have arrested 26-year-old Mr. Phachara, also known as “Phet” from Phosa Subdistrict, after he turned himself in following the attack. He is accused of breaking into a house in Hua Phai Subdistrict, Muang Ang Thong District, and shooting 28-year-old Mr. Suwatchai, known locally as “Chang Earth”, multiple times. According to investigators from Ang Thong Provincial Police, the suspect admitted to the shooting, citing jealousy as the motive. He had reportedly divorced his former wife just days earlier, on 15 July. After the shooting, he fled the scene on a Yamaha Fino motorcycle with a friend and later disposed of the firearm by throwing it into the Chao Phraya River near Phongpheng Subdistrict. Police recovered eight bullet casings at the scene and are examining CCTV footage from multiple cameras installed around the house. The bedroom bore clear signs of violence, with a bloodstained mattress and a shattered window believed to have been pierced by bullets. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his leg, hip and abdomen and was rushed to Ang Thong Hospital, where doctors managed to stabilise his condition. Ms. Ket, the 25-year-old current partner of Mr. Suwatchai, told officers that she had been living with him for about a month when the attack occurred. She reported that Mr. Phachara, her ex-partner, entered the house from the rear, kicked down the bedroom door and began shooting before fleeing with an accomplice. Authorities have charged Mr. Phachara with attempted murder, unlawful entry and weapons offences. The case remains under investigation as police continue to gather evidence. 16. Picture courtesy of The Standard The Royal Thai Navy has released a set of four key guidelines for civilians to follow in the event that Thailand enters a state of war or faces a severe national security crisis. The advisory, issued ton 26 July, urges citizens to remain calm, informed and actively supportive of national defence efforts. The Navy emphasised that civilians play a vital role in supporting the armed forces and ensuring national stability. The four recommended guidelines are as follows: 1. Be Informed – Stay Disciplined The public is urged to follow updates only from official and reliable sources, particularly those issued by the military. Citizens are advised against spreading unverified information or engaging in the circulation of fake news. Moreover, the Navy stressed the importance of refraining from sharing operational details related to military movements, in order to safeguard strategic security and protect personnel. 2. Watch, Report and Support Civilians are encouraged to act as the eyes and ears of the authorities by reporting suspicious individuals, objects, or activities. Cooperation during security checks and search operations is essential in maintaining public safety and preventing potential threats in local areas. 3. Conserve Resources – Strengthen the Nation During times of conflict, conserving energy and natural resources is crucial. Citizens are encouraged to minimise waste and support energy efficiency, which helps reduce national vulnerabilities and ensures long-term resilience both at the individual and national level. 4. Support Logistics Wisely In cases where the public wishes to support the military through donations, the Navy requests that only essential supplies, such as medicines and medical equipment, be provided. Donations should be delivered to designated government collection points to avoid confusion and to ease the logistical burden of sorting and transporting unnecessary items. The Royal Thai Navy concluded by stating that public cooperation is a vital force in preserving the nation’s independence and ensuring its continued security during turbulent times. 19. Picture courtesy of Khaosod A police officer has turned himself in after fatally shooting his biological father seven times in what authorities are calling a deeply disturbing domestic incident. The suspect, a bomb disposal officer, is being held without bail due to the seriousness of the crime. The victim, 73-year-old Mr. Prasarn, was gunned down inside his home in Khung Phayom Subdistrict, Ban Pong District, Ratchaburi Province, on the evening of 23 July. The suspect was identified as his own son, Police Lieutenant Colonel Prayoon, an officer in the Ratchaburi Provincial Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit. Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, police launched a manhunt for Lt. Col. Prayoon, dispatching investigative teams to track him down and apply pressure for his surrender. On 25 July at 18:00, he reported to Ban Pong Police Station and handed himself in to Pol. Col. Kobchok Lektrakun, Superintendent of Ban Pong Police Station and Pol. Lt. Col. Phuwadon Udomnapakhun, Deputy Superintendent of Investigation. Appearing physically and emotionally drained, the suspect was immediately taken into custody for interrogation. Pol. Col. Kobchok revealed that Ratchaburi Provincial Police Commander, Pol. Maj. Gen. Watchirapong Amornpitak, had ordered the urgent apprehension of the suspect, instructing his teams to maintain sustained pressure. The initial investigation points to ongoing domestic tensions between father and son, including repeated verbal disputes, as the likely motive behind the shooting. “This is a serious and violent crime. The provincial commander has made it clear that no bail will be granted in this case,” Col. Kobchok stated, adding that the investigation must be thorough before proceeding with legal prosecution. 20. Raid Uncovers Illegal Cough Syrup Operation Linked to ‘4x100’ Kratom Mix Picture courtesy of Matichon. Authorities have dismantled a major online distribution network selling illegal pharmaceuticals used in the preparation of the dangerous “4x100” concoction — a narcotic mixture of kratom, cough syrup, and other substances favoured by some youths. 21. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Authorities have dismantled a major online distribution network selling illegal pharmaceuticals used in the preparation of the dangerous “4x100” concoction — a narcotic mixture of kratom, cough syrup, and other substances favoured by some youths. The bust led to the seizure of thousands of items with a street value exceeding one million baht. Acting on orders from Pol. Maj. Gen. Pattanasak Bupphasuwan, officers from the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) conducted simultaneous raids at two locations in Bangkok and Nonthaburi. The first raid took place at a condominium in Samae Dam, Bang Khun Thian District, where officers found 25 categories of controlled or unregistered pharmaceuticals. These included large quantities of liquid antihistamines and cough suppressants, unregistered medications believed to have been smuggled in from neighbouring countries, and erectile dysfunction drugs such as KAMAGRA. Authorities also seized Class 2 and Class 4 psychotropic substances including Alprazolam and Amitriptyline. In the second operation, officers searched a residence in Bang Muang Subdistrict, Bang Yai District, Nonthaburi. A 29-year-old man, identified only as Mr Thanakiat, was present and cooperated with the search. Police seized fruit-flavoured syrup (commonly known as “lean”), often misused in drug cocktails, along with other pharmaceutical items. In total, both locations yielded: • 1,243 bottles of cough and allergy syrup • 180 tablets of psychotropic drugs • 17,544 unregistered pills • 7,500 hazardous tablets • 232 bottles of lean syrup The operation follows increased surveillance of online platforms suspected of illegal drug sales. Authorities noted that youth have increasingly misused over-the-counter medicines — such as painkillers, antihistamines, and cough syrups — by mixing them with kratom in what is colloquially known as “4x100”. This concoction produces hallucinogenic and sedative effects, and carries a high risk of addiction and psychological harm. Mr Thanakiat, who holds only a high school diploma and no pharmaceutical qualifications, admitted to sourcing the drugs online and selling the mixtures via a Facebook page called Drop Lean Thailand. He told investigators that he had been operating the business for around one year, earning 4,000 to 5,000 baht per month. He now faces multiple charges, including illegal production, importation, distribution, and possession of psychotropic substances, as well as selling medicines without a licence or registration. He has been transferred to the CPPD’s Division 4 for prosecution. Pol. Maj. Gen. Pattanasak emphasised the gravity of the operation, pointing to the wide range of dangerous drugs seized, including Class 2 and Class 4 psychotropics. He warned that misuse of these substances in combination with kratom poses a significant public health threat, especially among young people. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-07-27
