Picture courtesy of Khaosod. An incident occurred early morning on 19 March, when a bridge collapsed on Highway 4217, between Chanae and Si Sakhon, in Chang Phueak subdistrict, Chanae district, Narathiwat. The collapse caused a pickup truck and a motorcycle to drive into the collapsed structure, resulting in one fatality and three injuries. The collapse took place at approximately 05:45. The village head of Moo 4, along with local residents, rushed to the scene in shock, after reports of the bridge’s structural failure. Emergency services were swiftly deployed to assist those injured, who were transported to hospital for urgent medical care. A drone was used to view the collapse and recorded the moments the pickup plunged into the collapsed structure, with the debris and possibly the driver being thrown through the windscreen on impact. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the collapse to determine whether it was due to structural weakness, weather conditions, or other contributing factors. -- 2025-03-20

Picture from responders. A couple transporting vegetables to the Si Mum Mueang Market in Ratchaburi was involved in a collision, when the husband, struggling with fatigue, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a roadside tree. The crash resulted in the death of his 60-year-old wife, leaving him devastated at the scene. The accident occurred at approximately 05:30 on 19 March, on Highway 323 in Ban Chandae, Moo 3, Tha Khanun subdistrict, Thong Pha Phum district. Upon receiving the report, officers from Thong Pha Phum Police Station, along with medical personnel from Thong Pha Phum Hospital and Kanchanaburi rescue teams, rushed to the scene. A white Toyota pickup truck, fully loaded with cabbages, was found severely damaged after colliding with a tree and a roadside sign. The front left section, including the engine compartment and passenger cabin, were crushed, with vegetables scattered across the scene. The woman in the front passenger seat was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified as a resident of Tha Sa-at subdistrict, Seka district, Bueng Kan province. The driver, 55-year-old Mr Ravi, from Chalae subdistrict, Thong Pha Phum, and the husband of the deceased, was found in shock and inconsolable. Rescue workers had to use hydraulic cutting equipment to extract his wife’s body from the wreckage. A friend of Mr Ravi, who also works in vegetable transportation, revealed that the couple had already completed one delivery to Si Mum Mueang Market earlier that day and was making a second trip when the crash occurred. Police investigations indicate that Mr Ravi, feeling drowsy, had informed his wife that he intended to find a place to stop and rest. However, before he could do so, he briefly fell asleep while navigating a curve, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash. Authorities will proceed with further investigations and legal procedures regarding the incident. -- 2025-03-20

UPDATE Picture courtesy of Matichon. Authorities have been urgently dismantling the collapsed structure of the elevated road project, aiming to reopen the affected section by 20 March. The Council of Engineers is also scheduled to conduct an on-site inspection on 19 March, as part of the investigation, to determine the cause of the collapse. At 22:30 on 18 March, Surachet Laophulsuk, Governor of the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT), led an inspection team to assess progress on the dismantling efforts at the site, located near the Dao Khanong toll plaza. Following the inspection, Surachet reported that significant progress had been made over the past four days, with continuous dismantling efforts allowing the site to be cleared more quickly than initially planned. The section leading to the Dao Khanong toll plaza is expected to be fully cleared by the afternoon of 19 March, including removal of debris, road resurfacing, and lane markings. Despite the collapse, EXAT remains confident that traffic flow on the Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway at the Dao Khanong toll plaza can resume at 06:00 on 20 March, earlier than the originally scheduled reopening. While the inbound toll plaza is expected to reopen soon, repairs to the outbound elevated road section that collapsed will continue and are estimated to take no more than 30 days, though EXAT hopes to complete the work even sooner. In parallel, authorities are working on compensation for victims, including those injured and families of the deceased. EXAT has pledged to provide full compensation, with families of fatalities expected to receive more than 1 million baht. As for the construction contractor, EXAT has suspended operations for 14 days and imposed a fine of 16 million baht per day. Investigations are ongoing, and if negligence is found, those responsible will face additional legal consequences. Reported Dumped Naked Dead Bodies in Pattaya, Turn Out to Be Shop Mannequins Authorities were left red-faced after a dramatic emergency response to what was believed to be a grisly crime scene, only to discover that the “victims” were nothing more than discarded mannequins. Picture from responders. Authorities were left red-faced after a dramatic emergency response to what was believed to be a grisly crime scene, only to discover that the “victims” were nothing more than discarded mannequins. The commotion began when a concerned resident called the police, reporting the shocking sight of a naked man and woman’s bodies lying next to a quiet road, in a rubbish heap near Khao Makok Soi 13, Nong Prue, on the night of 18 March, at 23:00. Emergency responders, fearing the worst, rushed to the scene with Huai Yai Police Station and volunteers from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation, all attending the incident. Expecting to uncover a tragic scene, officers instead found two abandoned shop mannequins locked in an intimate embrace. The eerie sight, seemingly straight out of a crime drama, turned into an embarrassing, yet hilarious, false alarm. Locals and social media users quickly saw the funny side, with comments flooding in about the “lovers” who had seemingly been left to “rest” in the undergrowth. Some joked that the mannequins had simply “run away from the shop” for a romantic getaway, while others praised the lifelike quality of the figures that had managed to fool. With no crime to investigate and nothing more than a case of misplaced mannequins, officers packed up and left, no doubt relieved that their “victims” were made of plastic rather than flesh and bone. Saharath, a rescue volunteer stated “I do not blame the person who reported the sighting. If I had driven past and seen them in that position, I would have thought the same,” Pattaya is no stranger to bizarre news, but this mannequin mystery might just be one of the most entertaining twists so far this year. -- 2025-03-18

The store owner has publicly urged the culprits to return the stolen goods or pay for them before legal action is taken. The incident was revealed by Facebook user Satika Oz, who shared CCTV footage in the “Koh Phangan - Koh Phangan” Facebook group. The video shows the two men helping themselves to items inside the store, Sprout. The store owner posted a message in English, warning the thieves: “To the two men who stole from Sprout, we have reported you to the police. You still have the chance to return what you took or pay for it before facing legal consequences. “It is shameful that you entered our space, our home, and acted so dishonestly. We work hard to create something meaningful, and your actions are deeply disappointing and unacceptable. “If anyone recognises these two individuals or knows where they are staying, please inform us. They must return what they stole before the situation escalates. This is their final opportunity to do the right thing.” The post has gained significant attention online, with many social media users sharing the footage in an effort to identify the suspects. Locals and tourists alike have been urged to come forward with any information regarding the men’s whereabouts. The Koh Phangan police have been alerted, and authorities are now investigating the theft. If the suspects fail to return the stolen items, they could face criminal charges. Residents and business owners on the island remain on high alert, as Koh Phangan, known for its Full Moon Parties and vibrant tourism, has seen a rise in petty crimes in recent months. -- 2025-03-19

Pictures from responders A massive fire broke out at a customs impound lot near the permanent Mae Sot border checkpoint, destroying over 200 vehicles awaiting auction. Firefighters battled the blaze for more than three hours before bringing it under control. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the mysterious inferno. The fire erupted on the evening of 18 March at a large, fenced-off impound lot in Ban Wang Takhian Tai, Tha Sai Luat subdistrict, Mae Sot district, Tak province. The lot contained nearly 800 vehicles seized by Thai customs and awaiting public auction. Upon receiving the emergency call, local firefighters from Tha Sai Luat municipality, along with units from across Mae Sot, rushed to the scene. The local administration, soldiers from the Rachamanu Task Force, and other officials also joined efforts to control the flames. Eyewitnesses reported seeing towering flames and thick black smoke billowing into the sky, visible from both the Thai and Myanmar sides of the border. Explosions were heard intermittently as the fire rapidly spread among the tightly packed vehicles. Fire crews faced significant difficulties containing the blaze due to strong, shifting winds and the flammable nature of the vehicles. Despite deploying multiple fire trucks, the flames continued to spread, forcing officials to break through the compound’s perimeter fence to reach the source of the fire. After several failed attempts to douse the inferno, firefighters had to combine water hose-lines, roof monitors and foam . It took more than three hours of intensive efforts to finally contain the blaze. Preliminary reports indicate that over 200 vehicles were completely destroyed. Authorities have sealed off the site for forensic examination to determine the cause of the fire, with no eyewitnesses having come forward to describe how it started. The Police and forensic teams are conducting an in-depth investigation to uncover whether the blaze was accidental or the result of foul play. -- 2025-03-19

Pictures from responders. A crash occurred on the Bangkok-bound lane of the Chonburi Bypass near a Caltex petrol station in Ban Suan Subdistrict, Mueang Chonburi District. An 18-wheeler truck driver, lost control, crossed the median, and collided with an oncoming lorry, resulting in the death of the driver at the scene. At 12:55 on 18 March, the Mangorn Chonburi Rescue Team received a report of a serious collision and immediately dispatched emergency responders to the scene. Upon arrival, rescuers found an 18-wheel truck with its cab completely detached from the chassis. Nearby, the other lorry involved in the crash was stationary, with its trailer entangled with the detached cab of the first vehicle. A male victim, the driver of the 18-wheeler, who had been thrown from the cab wreckage and was found unresponsive and in critical condition. The rescue team administered CPR and used an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an attempt to revive him. However, despite their best efforts and the support of medical personnel from Chonburi Hospital, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Initial reports suggest that the 18-wheeler driver, lost control, veered over the central reservation, and crashed head-on into the side of the other lorry’s trailer. However, the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by local authorities. Traffic police are examining evidence from the scene, including skid marks, vehicle damage, and potential CCTV footage, to determine whether speed, mechanical failure, or driver error contributed to the crash. -- 2025-03-19

Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A pick-up truck carrying oversized metal gates on an expressway has drawn criticism after being flagged as both illegal and highly dangerous to other road users. The incident was highlighted by the Official Bang Phli–Suksawat Expressway Traffic Information Facebook page, which posted a photo of the overloaded vehicle along with a warning that such transport violates expressway regulations and poses a serious risk. The truck in question was seen carrying tall, protruding metal gates without proper securing measures while driving along the Kanchanaphisek Expressway. Traffic management officials intervened and ordered the driver to exit the expressway, citing a breach of traffic regulations. “This type of load is not allowed on expressways,” the post stated. “Overloaded and unsecured cargo creates a major hazard for other motorists and significantly increases the risk of accidents.” Following the social media post, many users condemned the driver’s recklessness, stressing that such unsafe practices endanger not only the driver but also everyone on the road. Several commenters suggested that a larger, more suitable transport vehicle should have been used instead. Authorities continue to urge drivers to adhere to expressway regulations and ensure that cargo is properly secured to prevent accidents and maintain road safety. -- 2025-03-19

Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A 65-year-old man shot his 56-year-old partner outside a village store before taking his own life at a nearby intersection in a shocking act of jealousy-fuelled violence. Police and emergency services were alerted to the scene at around 07:30 on 18 March. Colonel Phongsuk Khongpan-yo, Superintendent of Khon San Police Station, led officers and forensic investigators to Moo 3, Ban Hua Namuang, Khon San District, Chaiyaphum, where the attack took place. At the scene outside the store, police found the victim, identified as Mrs. Phong 56, in critical condition. She had suffered severe gunshot wounds and was lying in a pool of blood, barely breathing. Medics provided emergency treatment before rushing her to Khon San Hospital. A short distance away, at a village intersection, police discovered the body of the gunman, Mr. Wanchana 65. He had suffered a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. A homemade firearm was found beside him. According to witness statements, Mr. Wanchana and Mrs. Phong had been in a relationship for some time. However, recent tensions arose as Mr. Wanchana feared she was becoming distant and might be interested in someone else. Police believe jealousy was the primary motive behind the attack. After shooting Mr. Wanchana fled the scene on his motorcycle. He returned to his residence before taking his own life at the village intersection. Colonel Phongsuk confirmed that authorities are conducting a thorough investigation, gathering forensic evidence and interviewing witnesses to establish the exact circumstances of the crime. The body of Mr. Wanchana has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and will be released to his family for religious rites. Meanwhile, Mrs. Phong remains in critical condition, with doctors working to stabilise her. Police will continue to investigate the case while awaiting further medical updates on the victim’s condition. -- 2025-03-19

Loader Driver Crushed and Drowned After Falling into Ravine An incident occurred in Patho District, Chumphon, when a loader driver lost control while reversing, sending his vehicle tumbling into a waterlogged ravine. Picture from responders. An incident occurred in Patho District, Chumphon, when a loader driver lost control while reversing, sending his vehicle tumbling into a waterlogged ravine. The heavy machine overturned, pinning the driver underwater and leading to his death before rescue workers could reach him. Police Sub-Lieutenant Thawisak Raksakul, an investigator from Patho Police Station, received a report from Mr. Jarae Khwanraj, the village head of Moo 12, Patho Subdistrict, that a loader had lost control and fallen into a roadside ravine. The driver was trapped inside the cab. Police Superintendent Colonel Monsak Srisuwan and emergency responders from Patho Hospital immediately rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, officials discovered a Komatsu articulated loader overturned, down a deep ravine alongside Huai So Road, approximately six kilometres from the main Patho-Lang Suan route. The driver was later identified as Mr. Somkid 47, a resident of Moo 3, Sam Yaek Subdistrict, Wichian Buri District, Phetchabun. Rescue workers descended into the ravine to assist, but the loader’s immense weight, combined with the unstable, waterlogged soil, caused the vehicle to gradually sink further. As the machine pressed down on him, Mr. Somkid was submerged and drowned in full view of emergency personnel and gathered villagers, who were powerless to intervene. Police then coordinated with Mr. Pramote Kaenkul, the president of the Patho Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, to deploy a crane and a specialised recovery team. After more than two hours they successfully lifted the vehicle and retrieved Mr. Somkid’s body. Upon inspection, his leg was found entangled in a rope trapping him in the vehicle. Volunteer rescue worker Mr. Chanin recounted that when he arrived at the scene, the loader was already crushing down on the driver. As they attempted to free him, the vehicle continued sinking, ultimately submerging Mr. Somkid before they could save him. Investigations revealed that the crash occurred after a six-wheeled truck, heavily loaded with stones, struggled to ascend the steep road. The driver decided to unload some of the stones and called for the nearby loader to assist in spreading them along the roadside. However, for reasons yet unknown, the excavator suddenly lost control while reversing and fell into the ravine, leading to the fatality. -- 2025-03-19

Pictures from responders. A fire broke out at Udon Thani Hospital, forcing nurses and staff to evacuate patients in a dramatic rescue operation. The blaze, which started on the second floor of the hospital’s seven-storey administration building, was brought under control before it could spread further. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported. At approximately 22:45, emergency services received reports of a fire at the outpatient and administration building of Udon Thani Hospital. Firefighters from Udon Thani Municipality, along with rescue teams, rushed to the scene, where they found thick black smoke billowing from the second floor. The fire originated in the hospital’s pharmacy room and was spreading upwards towards the third floor. As the flames intensified, medical staff and nurses scrambled to evacuate patients, moving them away from the affected area as quickly as possible. Firefighters worked to contain the fire, using water hoses lines, to prevent it from spreading further. Within a fairly short period, they successfully extinguished the flames, although efforts continued to clear the smoke and monitor for potential flare-ups. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit in the control panel of an electronic rmedicine dispenser, recently installed at the hospital. Pol. Col. Phattanawong Chanphon, Chief of Udon Thani Police Station, arrived at the scene to oversee the investigation. He confirmed that the blaze originated in the pharmacy room on the second floor, where computer servers and electronic equipment were damaged by fire. Deputy Director of Udon Thani Hospital, Dr. Olarn Wiwattanachang, assured the public that while the fire caused damage to certain areas, the hospital remains operational and is expected to resume normal services. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage. -- 2025-03-19 -
