Picture from responders. A 74-year-old woman was killed after a 10-wheel lorry struck her motorcycle and ran over her on Thamma Chedi Road, near Mukh Montri Municipal School, in the heart of Udon Thani. The fatal crash occurred at approximately 16.30 on 19 March. Police, medics from Udon Thani Hospital, and rescue workers from the Udon Sawang Methatham Foundation rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a collision involving a goods vehicle. Upon arrival, emergency responders found a Mitsubishi 10-wheel lorry loaded with soil, stopped in the road. A red-and-black Honda Scoopy motorbike lay near the vehicle’s front wheels, while the lifeless body of Mrs. Pinthong, a resident of Ban Chang, lay beneath the lorry’s left rear wheel. The victim had suffered severe injuries, including fractures to her neck, shoulders and legs. The lorry driver, Mr. Narubeth, a resident of Nong Khai province, remained at the scene to cooperate with police. He explained that he had been transporting soil from a pit in Ban Bonoi, Nong Samrong Subdistrict, to a construction site near Udon Thani Airport. “After unloading the last trip, I was returning to the pit, using the city route. I stopped at a red light at an intersection and saw three motorcycles ahead of me. When the light turned green, I pulled away, but I only saw two motorcycles move forward. I assumed the third had turned off the road. Moments later, I felt my truck run over something, so I stopped and got out to check. That’s when I saw the accident. I am truly sorry for what has happened,” he said. Rescue workers used the victim’s mobile phone to contact her family, who arrived at the scene in tears. Initially hoping she had only suffered injuries, her children were devastated upon learning of her death. Overcome with emotion, they climbed into the rescue vehicle to see their mother one last time, kissing her forehead and closing her eyes before embracing her body in grief. Local vendor Ms. Beer 40, who runs a nearby stall, witnessed the aftermath. “I was sitting at my shop as usual when I heard a loud crash. I looked up and saw the lorry’s wheel rolling over a body. I was shocked. At first, I didn’t even realise a motorcycle was involved. I immediately called the authorities. Lorries do use this road occasionally, but today I noticed this particular lorry passing back and forth several times since morning. I never imagined such a tragedy would happen.” Police at Muang Udon Thani Police Station documented the scene and took the lorry driver into custody for further questioning. He also underwent an alcohol test. CCTV footage from a nearby laundrette recorded the crash, showing three motorcycles passing the shop, with the soil lorry closely following the victim’s bike. Investigators will examine the footage in detail and interview the driver further before deciding on legal proceedings. The victim’s body was taken to Udon Thani Hospital for a post-mortem examination before being released to her family for funeral rites. -- 2025-03-21

Former Yakuza Gang Member Arrested for Call Centre Scam and Money Laundering Picture courtesy of Matichon. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Police have arrested six Japanese nationals in connection with call centre scams in two separate cases, including a former Yakuza gang member. Pol. Gen. Thatchai Pitanilabutr, Inspector-General of the Royal Thai Police and Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Centre, revealed details of the arrests, which were made following cooperation between Thai and Japanese authorities. Case 1: Former Yakuza Member Apprehended The first case was initiated when the Japanese Embassy in Thailand alerted the Immigration Bureau about a Japanese national wanted in Japan for assault, fraud, theft, and violations of the country’s Anti-Organised Crime Act. Authorities requested his deportation. The suspect, identified as Yamaguchi, was located in the Sathorn area of Bangkok, where immigration officers arrested him. Further investigations revealed that Yamaguchi was a former Yakuza gang member and the leader of a call centre gang operating in Cambodia and Vietnam, targeting Japanese citizens. Thai authorities discovered that Yamaguchi had been renting a luxury property in Sathorn for over 180,000 baht per month. He had also established a company called Last Samurai Japan in 2024, allegedly dealing in high-value art sales. Investigators suspect the company was a front for money laundering. Acting on a search warrant, police raided Yamaguchi’s residence, where they discovered four other Japanese nationals, all of whom had previous criminal records in Japan. Authorities also found assets worth over 30 million baht in a digital wallet, which is now under investigation. Yamaguchi was taken into custody, and Thai authorities are coordinating with Japanese officials for his extradition. Case 2: Call Centre Gang Financier Captured The second case involved Miyashita, a Japanese national wanted for theft. Thai authorities, working closely with their Japanese counterparts, tracked him down following a crackdown on call centre operations in neighbouring countries. Miyashita was captured by a militant group and handed over to authorities. He later confessed to working as a financial officer for a call centre gang since January. He has been charged under Thailand’s immigration laws, and efforts are underway to extradite him to Japan. Pol. Gen. Thatchai stated that Thailand and Japan would continue working together to combat transnational organised crime, particularly call centre scams. -- 2025-03-21

Picture courtesy of Matichon. A tuk-tuk driver has been sentenced on 20 March, to one month and 15 days in prison, fined 5,000 baht, and had his vehicle confiscated after performing a dangerous wheelie on Rama IX Road while carrying a passenger. His sentence has been suspended for two years. The incident, which was widely circulated on social media on 27 January 2025, showed the motorised three-wheeler lifting its front wheel while driving recklessly through traffic. The footage sparked public concern over road safety and the reputation of Bangkok’s public transport services. Following an investigation by Makkasan Police Station, authorities identified the driver as Mr Santiya, who was found to have operated the vehicle without a valid public transport licence. The incident had occurred at 22:00 on 25 October 2024 near Jodd Fairs Market in Huai Khwang District. Mr Santiya was charged and convicted for multiple offences: • Driving a public transport vehicle without a valid licence • Reckless driving likely to cause harm to people or property • Driving in an abnormal manner • Failing to consider the safety and well-being of others The public prosecutor proceeded with the case, and on 27 February 2025, the North Bangkok District Court (Case No. A.1164/2025, Red Case No. A.1316/2025) found him guilty. The court sentenced him to one month and 15 days in prison, a 5,000 baht fine, and a one-year probation period, during which he must complete 24 hours of community service. His tuk-tuk was also confiscated. The Metropolitan Police Bureau issued a public warning, urging drivers to respect traffic laws and prioritise road safety. Officials also cautioned against promoting reckless driving on social media and encouraged the public to report dangerous behaviour via the hotlines. -- 2025-03-21

Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A crash occurred on a construction bypass road in Chawang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, when a motorcyclist unfamiliar with the route lost control and crashed into a bridge pillar, losing his life. The incident took place on 20 March at around 16:00, when police and rescue teams were called to the scene of the crash. The victim, a 48-year-old man, was found trapped beneath a bridge beam near the ongoing construction of a new bridge crossing the Taphi River. Upon arrival, emergency responders found the man’s Honda motorcycle lodged against a pillar, with the rider’s body severely injured and stuck under the bridge’s beam. Rescue teams had to use ropes to retrieve both the body and the motorcycle from the location. The victim has been identified as a local man from Khao Phra Subdistrict, Phikun District, Nakhon Si Thammarat. According to investigations, the man was travelling towards Chawang District when he encountered the construction detour. Authorities believe the motorcyclist, unfamiliar with that diverted route, lost control and veered off course, colliding with the bridge pillar before being thrown beneath the bridge’s beam, resulting in his death. Police suspect the man was driving at high speed, which, combined with the unfamiliarity of the detour, led to the fatal crash. The body was later sent to Siamruamjai Hospital for further examination, and an official investigation into the incident is ongoing. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, and the family of the deceased has been informed. -- 2025-03-21

Picture courtesy of Matichon. Two brothers have been arrested in Sakhon Nakhon after allegedly stabbing their 74-year-old neighbour to death in what they claim was an act of self-defence. The incident occurred in Non Rang village, Bong Tai sub-district, Sawang Daen Din district. According to reports, the suspects, identified as 44-year-old Suthep and 41-year-old Krungchon, entered the victim’s home armed with a five-inch kitchen knife and a wooden club. The victim, Thongin, sustained severe injuries to his head, face, and chest. Following the attack, the suspects took the victim’s shotgun and barricaded themselves in their home across the street. Police, led by Pol. Col. Chatchawan Duangkaew, surrounded the suspects’ residence and persuaded their mother, Pornchai, to assist in negotiations. After some resistance, officers managed to subdue the brothers and take them into custody. During questioning, the suspects claimed that Thongin had first fired a shotgun at them during a dispute over property damage. Suthep alleged that he was defending his mother, whom the victim had threatened. However, the victim’s granddaughter, Ann refuted their claims, stating that the two brothers had a long history of violent behaviour and had often harassed her grandfather. Authorities later recovered the victim’s shotgun from a pond behind the suspects’ house, along with the knife used in the attack. The suspects, both of whom appeared intoxicated during their arrest, provided conflicting statements. While Suthep denied using illegal drugs apart from cannabis, Krungchon admitted to drug use. Witnesses in the village confirmed that the families had longstanding disputes. Both men are now in police custody and have been charged with homicide and drug-related offences. Investigations are ongoing. -- 2025-03-21

Pictures from responders. A fire broke out on 20 March, in a three-storey commercial building housing a construction company in the middle of a residential area in Bang Khun Thian. The blaze, which triggered loud explosions and sent thick black smoke into the sky, took firefighters nearly an hour to bring under control. The fire started at around midday in a commercial property located at the end of Soi Sagaengam 39/1, Sagaengam Road, Samae Dam Subdistrict. The building, which functioned as both a materials storage facility and a dormitory for workers, was engulfed in flames on the ground floor when emergency services arrived. Firefighters from Bang Khun Thian Fire Station were dispatched to the scene and worked for approximately 50 minutes before successfully extinguishing the blaze. The building was used by a construction company to store materials such as gypsum boards and paint, both flammable substances. Witnesses reported hearing explosions moments before the fire erupted. “I was working at the front of a nearby print shop when I suddenly heard loud bangs coming from inside the building,” said Mr. Yai, 35, an employee at the print shop. “Then I saw thick black smoke pouring out from behind the metal shutters.” He immediately alerted the authorities. The company owner, Mr. Phakin, 49, confirmed that the premises were used as both a storage facility and accommodation for seven to eight workers. Fortunately, no one was inside when the fire broke out. “I only found out about the fire when one of my workers called me,” he said. The cause of the blaze remains unknown. Officers from Tha Kham Police Station have called in forensic experts to conduct a thorough examination of the scene. Authorities will assess the extent of the damage and determine the cause of the fire before proceeding with legal action if necessary. The incident has raised concerns among local residents, as the presence of commercial storage facilities within residential areas poses a significant fire risk. Neighbours have expressed fears over safety regulations and the potential dangers of hazardous materials being stored close to homes. -- 2025-03-21

Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A mother was left devastated after discovering her son had taken his own life in their rented room in Bang Lamung, Chonburi, early morning on 20 March. Emergency services from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Unit were alerted to the incident at 05:00. They arrived at the unnamed row house accommodation, where they found the body of 34-year-old Mr. Ekaphop in Room 11. The deceased, wearing a grey t-shirt and denim shorts, had died by hanging. His body had been taken down before authorities arrived. According to his mother, Mrs. Chomsri, 53, her son had been struggling emotionally following the breakdown of his marriage. Despite his repeated attempts to reconcile with his former wife, she refused to return to him. Speaking to police, Mrs. Chomsri recalled a chilling remark her son had made in the past: “If one of us had to die, I would rather it be me than you, Mum.” However, she never imagined he would act on such thoughts, especially as he had a young child to care for. The grieving mother explained that she had gone to bed at around 23:00 the previous night and woke up at 04:30 to prepare for work. Noticing her son’s bicycle was missing, she glanced over at his sleeping area and saw his legs hanging down. Turning on the light, she was horrified to find him lifeless. Shocked and distraught, she immediately contacted the authorities. However, by the time emergency responders arrived, it was too late. Police have recorded details of the incident and documented the scene. The body has been transferred to Pattaya Patthamakorn Hospital, where it will remain until family members arrange a funeral. -- 2025-03-21

Knife-Wielding Thief Crashes to His Death After Robbing Shop Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A man who robbed a shop owner at knifepoint met a fatal end after losing control of his motorbike and crashing into a tree stump while attempting to flee the scene. At approximately 17:20 on 19 March, rescue volunteers from the Sawang Bampen Dhammasathan Foundation in Ban Sang District received a report of a fatal motorbike crash on a dirt road in Ban Hua Don Nong Suea, Village 12, Bang Yang Subdistrict, Ban Sang District, Prachinburi Province. Emergency responders and police arrived to investigate the scene. They found the body of a man, later identified as 44-year-old Mr. Suchart Toomnak from Sa Kaeo Province, lying face down. Nearby, officers discovered a red-and-black Honda Wave motorbike without a licence plate. The deceased had a black waist bag strapped to him and a 30 cm kitchen knife tucked into his waistband. Evidence at the scene suggested that he had lost control of his vehicle, crashed into a tree stump, and was thrown approximately 50 metres from the impact. The incident followed an earlier robbery at a local shop. The victim, 35-year-old Ms. Thanirat, recounted the harrowing experience. “The man came to buy a drink at my shop. As I turned away, he moved towards the back door and started a conversation, but I noticed he was looking past me into the house. Suddenly, he grabbed my waist bag and pulled it off me. Then he held a knife to my side and demanded all the money I had.” Ms. Thanirat explained that her bag contained only her phone, some ID cards, and a small amount of cash, as she had recently taken most of her money out of it. “He told me not to scream, or he’d kill me. Then he quickly got on his motorbike and sped off.” Once the robber had left, she screamed for help. A nearby fisherman who had been casting a net rushed to assist and began pursuing the suspect on his own motorbike. Ms. Thanirat got into her car to go and alert her husband. Mr. Somronsap, 34, who witnessed the pursuit, said, “I heard someone shouting that they had been robbed, so I ran to see what was happening. I saw the thief speeding away. As he reached a bend in the road, he lost control, veered off to the left, and crashed into the trees.” The bystander immediately called emergency services but was hesitant to approach the suspect, unsure if he was still alive. A good Samaritan who had followed the suspect to the crash site later reported to the police and provided his vehicle for inspection, ensuring he was cleared of any wrongdoing. Authorities are continuing their investigation, collecting evidence from the scene and conducting a post-mortem examination at Ban Sang Hospital to determine the precise cause of death. -- 2025-03-21

Drunken Man Assaulted After Harassing Street Vendor in Udon Thani Picture courtesy of Matichon. Picture courtesy of Matichon. A drunken man was left with a bloodied forehead after allegedly harassing a female street vendor, prompting two teenagers to intervene and attack him. At approximately 15:00 on 19 March, Pol. Sgt. Banjong Ruadrew, an officer from Mueang Udon Thani Police Station, received a report of an assault near the Napalai Hotel on Pracharaksa Road. Emergency responders from the Udon Sawang Methatham Rescue Foundation were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a 47-year-old man, later identified as Mr. Wijitra, with two deep wounds on his forehead, blood covering his face and clothing. He appeared intoxicated and claimed he had been attacked by a group of Myanmar nationals while collecting recyclables in Khlong Charoen alley. However, further investigation revealed a different story. Two 17-year-olds, Mr. Teekhayu, known as “Pae,” and Mr. Pawit, known as “Phop,” came forward to admit they were responsible for the attack. According to their statements, they were selling orange juice, milk, and snacks near the Udon Thani Sports College intersection before taking a break in Khlong Charoen alley. A 45-year-old female vendor, who sells grass jelly from a sidecar motorcycle, approached them seeking help. Her vehicle had broken down due to a chain malfunction and damaged rear wheel. She explained that Mr. Wijitra, who was heavily intoxicated, had offered to fix it but instead began harassing her. Fearing for her safety, she sought assistance from the teenagers. The two intervened, repairing the vendor’s motorcycle themselves, which angered Mr. Wijitra. As they worked, he attempted to interfere and later picked up a wooden object, trying to chase one of them into a nearby wooded area. In response, Pae distracted him while Phop grabbed a glass louvre pane and struck him on the forehead, causing the injuries. Despite his injuries, Mr. Wijitra continued to wander the streets, shouting that he had been attacked by Myanmar nationals. He was eventually found near the Napalai Hotel, where emergency services provided first aid before transporting him to hospital. A witness, 40-year-old Ms. Lampan, who was driving past the scene, noticed the injured man stumbling along the roadside, his face covered in what initially appeared to be paint. Upon closer inspection, she realised it was blood and immediately called rescue services for assistance. The two teenagers later led police to the scene of the altercation, about 300 metres from the Napalai Hotel, but the female vendor was no longer present. However, Mr. Wijitra’s motorised motorcycle and sidecar was found parked nearby. Pol. Sgt. Banjong confirmed that both teenagers had given their statements and would remain under investigation. Authorities are now waiting for Mr. Wijitra to be discharged from hospital to determine whether he wishes to press charges. Police are also attempting to locate the female vendor to corroborate the allegations against him before proceeding with legal action. -- 2025-03-21

This is one of the victims of the fire. Picture taken about 3 weeks after the fire. He was at the time an off duty firefighter and was picking up his new girlfriend who worked there. As he pulled up in the car park he noticed smoke coming from the roof. He called the emergency services and rushed inside to find his girlfriend and help the evacuation. Unfortunately as he got close to exit, the smoke explosion occurred, engulfing him and his girlfriend in heat and flames. He was leading her by the hand through the smoke and she suffered the most severe injuries, calculated at 80% burns, he received 50% burns. They were treated at the scene, but his own colleagues and friends, before being rushed to hospital. After being in an induced coma for 10 days, he was brought around to discover the girlfriend had died from her injuries. Since that day, he has been unable to work and still needs regular treatment. The compensation so far has been minimal. Just one of the many lives, forever changed. The imprisonment of the owners is a step in the right direction, but sadly these types of fires will continue to occur, both here in Thailand and worldwide. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nightclub_fires

Picture courtesy of Khaosod A Thai woman and two Vietnamese men have been arrested in Chiang Saen district, Chiang Rai province, for allegedly forging official visa stamps and travel documents. Police seized numerous counterfeit stamps and passports during the operation. The suspects have been identified as Ms. Wannapat, 43, from Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai, and Mr. Tuan Vinh, 33, and Mr. Van Lqi, 38, both Vietnamese nationals. They were detained on 17 March while sitting in a vehicle in Village 8, Wiang subdistrict, near the Thai-Lao border along the Mekong River. Chiang Saen police became suspicious after spotting a white Toyota parked outside Huai Kiang School at night. Officers conducted surveillance and observed Ms. Wannapat at the wheel, with the two Vietnamese men as passengers. The men were seen removing a package from the boot of the vehicle and transferring it to another car. Upon approaching the group for questioning, police found that the Vietnamese men could not communicate in Thai. A search of the vehicle revealed a cache of forged documents and official stamps, including: • Six Thai entry-exit visa stamps • Four Cambodian visa stamps • Four Vietnamese visa stamps • 27 Chinese passports • 54 Vietnamese passports • Paper cutters, rubber stamp pads, and several mobile phones All three were immediately taken into custody and questioned in the presence of immigration officials. Ms. Wannapat told police she had been hired for 800 baht to transport the two Vietnamese men from Mae Sai, on the Thai-Myanmar border, to Chiang Saen. She claimed to have no knowledge of the package’s contents and insisted she was simply working as a driver on a familiar route. The Vietnamese men, speaking through an interpreter, admitted hiring Ms. Wannapat for transportation, stating that they intended to cross the Mekong River into Laos. However, they denied any awareness of the fake visa stamps and passports. All three suspects have been charged with forging official stamps, seal impressions, or visa stickers for international travel. If convicted, they face prison sentences of one to seven years and fines ranging from 20,000 to 140,000 baht. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine whether the group is part of a larger visa forgery network. -- 2025-03-20
