  1. I'm using VDSL 50/10, getting 50mb download in Thailand which is great, but when I go international i.e. to the UK I get only 0.25mb download which is not enough to watch my free UK IPTV.

Found a solution, use a free proxy server in singapore it gives me 7mb download, now can watch my free UK IPTV without interruption, :-)

    instructions are here http://showboxassistance.proboards.com/thread/3/using-proxy

  2. I got 3BB VDSL 50/10, great speed for domestic Thailand internet actual getting 50mb down / 10mb up.

Sucks for international to UK only getting 0.25mb down, so cannot stream the free IPTV stuff to my andriod box.

My paid IPTV is thailand based so it works fine, www.ilikehd.com, I get HBO, FOX, SKY, Sports, Formula1 all for 450 baht per month, and re-runs are available. It also has channels for different countries.

Will look at the various VPNs next to see if any of those will bump up the download speed to UK so I can get the free IPTV working on my andriod box.

  3. This topic is not to debate education! Please respect, stay on topic or out of the topic.
It is a list of recommendations for non-international schools in Phuket.
Three recommendations received thus far are:

    Darasamuth.

    Dowroong
    Kajonkiet Thalang
    A bit about me....
I'm coming back to the island and am looking to send my 2 children, aged 7 and 4 to a non-international school, i.e. a bi-lingual school or a thai government school.
Could you provide me your recommendation, thank you. I'm looking to live near heroines monument as that was where I lived before and know the area, but I may have to consider living in another area depending on the location of the school.
    Thank you.
  4. please consider moving back to your country if you dont send them to darasamuth

They should come ahead of your desires

Please do not want to turn this thread into a debate about education and which country to live!

Suffice to say I would like them to grow up, live and work in Thailand. As adults, they will be competing for employment with other Thais so they need to read and write and speak Thai.

I now need to start a new thread as this has digressed too far. May I ask please do not post on the new thread as it is not intended to be a debate on about education, simply looking for a list of recommendations for non-internationals schools. Thank you in advance.

    I now un-follow this thread.

  5. An interesting thread.

The only observation I would make is that I am pleased my parents did not, when I was younger, restrict my educational opportunities. I am grateful because I have been able, as a result of my Western based education, to work in many different countries around the world. Very few Thais will ever have the same options as I did and the few will, almost by definition, have been educated within International Schools.

which city/town do you work now ?

Following university graduation I have worked in England, Scotland , Isle of Man, Switzerland, Germany , The Middle East, Cambodia, India, New Zealand and Africa.

    I have now retired.

which country was your western based education?

  7. @ ArranP

Why not give the children the education that allows them to decide where they want to live and work in the future?

It depend where you want to live. If you see yourself going back to America or UK, choose an international school.

If you see yourself living in Thailand, choose a Thai school.

Why are you removing the option of allowing your children to chose where they wish to live in the future?

With an education from an international school, they will have the option of university and lucrative employment in the west, not so with attending a regular Thai school.

With an education from an international school, at 18 years of age, your kids can leave Thailand for further education and / or work. You don't have to leave.

everything you are saying I know and have contemplated alot about already and arrived at my conclusion.

it depend where you want to live, a thai school is more beneficial than an international school for children who will grow up and live and work in thailand.

  9. i know you are looking for a non international school, however, a friend of mine just recommended me "international school phuket". much more reasonable in terms of school fees vs say head start and uses cambridge curriculum as well. fyi - im not financially involved with this school

thank you, but I need a non-international school, I am looking for my children to grow up and live in Thailand.

May I ask why you are confining your children to Thailand when, with a foreign passport, they have so many more opportunities that will be available to them, if also given the appropriate education?

I know the UK and I know Thailand, in my opinion quality of life is better in Thailand.

  11. quite shocked to hear you want to move back to thailand and are considering putting your kids in government schools. i love living in thailand, love it. for now i am wearing the cost of private schools here but i am going to give up my great lifestyle to have my kids educated back in nz. would be interested to hear why you would want to bring your kids to be raised with the children from thailands poor.

Believe it or not, the quality of life is better in Thailand than the UK.

  13. The only "billingual" school in that area I know that's not international is Kajonkiet in Thalang (EP - English program). As far as I know the government schools only offer a pure Thai program. There are a greater choice of schools that offer an English program as you come to the central part of the island. James

    Thank you.

I'm also interest in recommendations for thai government schools, as I will be teaching the children the read and write english.

  16. Yesterday I trespassed onto another farangs land (10 rai ) to retrieve my 1.5 year old son from his house, the owner stated he does not want me to come onto his land. He has since made a police report.

How will this be interpreted by the police, am I allowed to go onto his land to retrieve my son ?

  17. Tesco just suffered a massive balance sheet black hole and is now trying to dispose of its overseas operations, their days are numbered as the UK's number supermarket, Llidl and co are eating market share.

Barclays, who'd buy banks in these days of negative interest rates, ring fencing, government fines, et al!

    Direct Line, possibly.

It seems to me Arran you need to put 90% of your energies into company analysis rather than just looking on the internet to see which shares/bonds people are recommending, either that or diversify so much that your mis/bad-buys don't hurt you too much.

And and, chasing yield alone is a mugs game, there's an old saying, more money has been lost chasing yield than through any other single means! So if you're attracted by a 6.4%/7.4% return you have to ask yourself, why is the return that great, could it be because of the risk involved!

I'm not the best in the world at company analysis. Diversify, what would you recommend, a diversification of 10 ?

  18. GBP 27 Nov 2015 Barclays Bank Plc 6.875 27 Nov 2049 - 33 yrs 9 mths 100 6.434

    GBP 17 Feb 2016 Tesco Plc 5.5 13 Jan 2033 16 yrs 11 mths 87.229 6.792

    GBP 17 Feb 2016 Direct Line 9.125 27 Apr 2042 26 yrs 2 mths 117.449 7.387

    GBP 17 Feb 2016 Paragon 6.125% 2022 6.125 30 Jan 2022 5 yrs 11 mths 93.873 7.417

I'm new to bonds, why wouldn't you invest in these bonds ?

Barclays Bank, Tesco, Direct Line, Paragon all big names in the UK, maybe I'm wrong but unlikely to go bust, bonds have between 5 years to 33 years to run, returning 6.4% to 7.4% per year "running yield".

  19. Treasury 5% 2025
    GBP | GB0030880693 | 3088069 5.000% "7 March 2025" 130.845

Due to its buy price, the return on this is a measly1.3% per year, in other words the market has price out 75% the value of this bond for a prospective buyer.

I'm guessing the way to get a better return is to register for the IPOs ? Other than IPOs is it possible to get a descent return from bonds ?

  20. good news, HMRC just confirmed interest from banks and UK corporate bonds is treated as dis-regarded income for non-residents not claiming a personal allowance.

They said, when filling out the self assessment, to claim the personal allowance, and the system will then determine which is the lesser amount, a) to claim the personal allowance or B) not to claim the personal allowance and dis-regard the investment income.

The bank interest goes in the "UK interest" section and UK Corporate Bonds interest goes into the "Accrued Income / interest scheme" on the self assessment, the software does the rest in calculating the liability.
