Linear regression - line of best fit. Another way to establish a trend. A 6 month linear regression would indicate an uptrend.

I think you are a bit misinformed. Nothing moves in a straight line. Economic data does not and neither does the stock market. Economists look at overall trends. They don't subscribe to your theories. What they often use are moving averages to smooth out the bumps. A 3 week moving average would be above a 6 week moving average indicating an upwards trend.
