  1. Took quite a while after ordering my Fiber2U until having it installed but since then it has worked fine. A couple times I contacted them via email with some questions and they sent technicians around the next day. Another time the connection stopped working but it was back up and running 15 minutes after we called support on the telephone. Overall I've been very happy with the service.

  2. Upgrading your plan to 15 or 20 will only improve internet WITHIN Thailand. International speeds will be exactly the same as you have now.

If you consistently have a slow connection you should call your ISP support to have a technician come to your home or consider switching to a different service provider.

  3. My DELL Inspiron is the same. Bought it during the 2011 flood. 12 screws on the back, rip off the faceplace and keyboard, disconnect 3 ribbon cables, 8 more screws, tear off the monitor(!), remove another plate. Just to access the HDD.

On the plus side it's been incredibly robust. Carried it to and from work 20km daily in a backpack on a motorcycle for several years and everything still functions. It's still a piece of shiet but it has been very reliable.

  4. The best "hardening" a computer can have is the user. The next best is a router because it does NAT and destroys packets which weren't requested - it doesn't know where to send them. If the user doesn't request something he shouldn't including opening an email or clicking a link and he's behind a good NAT firewall such as a router he has a very good chance of avoiding problems.

Of course in an enterprise environment it's good to use SecureNet and ISA proxy server between the router and the internet but that's not practical or needed for home use.

My computer experienced "hardening" after I visited some popular pr0n sites.

  5. I've got a Brother MFC J415W. I don't do anything with the printer cartridges to look after them and it can be left for several weeks without being used with no room cooling and probably 40 degree heat when I'm away. And it certainly isn't used every day.

Never had a problem until I fitted the after market type oversize (cheap) cartridges that caused all sorts of problems. Poor printing quality, blotches everywhere, just total crap. They worked fine initially but after a few days they just went to the dogs. No amount of cleaning would get it to work properly.

Replaced with OEM cartridges and hey presto, no problems ever since.

OP - are you using the after market cartridges?

Exactly what I was thinking. The sister most likely bought cheap copy inks and they do not work well at all.

  6. I would suggest trying a different distro on that old laptop. Mint runs okay on lower end machines but there are others that will definitely perform better such as Lubuntu, Linux Lite, Zorin Lite.

  7. This topic is of interest to me also.

I am currently using a high end PC that has a radeon video card installed running two monitors one of the montors is a vga plug and the other is an lcd tv screen with a hdmi plug. Can anyone identify a high end graphics card that has two vga output plugs. I have a lot of vga monitors and want to run two of them.

You would be very hard pressed to find any modern graphics card with two vga outputs. Modern cards come with dual DVI, DisplayPort and HDMI outputs. Fortunately it's very easy to find vga adapters: http://www.invadeit.co.th/product/cables/prolink/dvi-d-plug-vga-socket-adapter-pb001-p022407/

  8. In the past I've mainly used Manjaro, Mint and Zorin. I wanted to freshen up my HTPC so I decided to try the latest Makulu and SuperX. I really wanted to use Makulu because I think it's an awesome looking distro but it wasn't playing nice with my AMD gpu and I wasn't able to get the proprietary driver working. As a result I installed SuperX and I'm glad I did. Really love this distro! So far everything has worked flawlessly and I'm pleased with the speed and aesthetics of it. Proprietary drivers installed easily and all hardware was detected and functions properly.

Only change I made was to remove Musique in favor of Clementine because quite frankly Clementine owns it.

If you're looking for a new distro I highly recommend you give SuperX a try. http://superxos.com/

  9. About a week ago my ToT was down when I got up in the morning. I left it because I had to go to work anyway. When I got home in the afternoon it was still down so my wife called support. They told us to wait 15 minutes then restart the router. Did just that and all was working again.

  10. I've been using ToT Fiber2U for about a year now. It has been very reliable and consistent albeit not very fast. The international routing has always been pretty terrible though. For that reason I also have TRUE adsl for my online gaming. In the past ping to my Australian server was 280 with ToT and 150 with TRUE.

A couple weeks ago I tested the ping on ToT and to my surprise it was sitting at 150 and has been the same since then. On top of that downloads have been blazingly fast eg: 400MB torrents in around 3 minutes. Regular downloads have also been very good. This is at anytime day or night.

I'm not sure what has changed but I LIKE IT! I won't cancel my TRUE connection just yet but if things stay as they are I will drop it fairly soon. I really hope that the changes are here to stay.
