UK Health System & Canadian Gov Health site both recommend Doxycyline in South East Asia problem areas(Not required in most parts of Thailand)
It is both a preventative and cure if pills proper course is taken.
Like any other drug some people experience side effects but I have never had a problem
Again like antibiotics it is important that the full course is completed (1 month after leaving the malarial area )
The Canadian Gov. link will turn up loads of information on use and possible side effects,( but remember malaria can kill )
Doxy can be purchased over the counter fom Boots and other pharmacists in Thailand very cheaply

Whenever the bird misbehaves, get a frozen chicken out of the fridge and put it in their cage for a few minutes. Some birds are quite intelligent and can make the connection between action and consequence.
A bowl of stuffing and a quick demonstration on how its used emphasises the consequences.
When you see a tear in the birds eye you know the message has been rammed home

It's really bad that since you were travelling with 2 small children they did not go out of their way to help.
I'm glad to hear they do not give preference to children.
What are we single people , second class citizens?

Sounds like you live out in the sticks. In which case, you'd probably be suffocating clouds of mozzies if it weren't for your "pests". Have you considered sealing off any gaps and holes leading into the attic?
You are right I am in the sticks and I am sure they are eating some mozzies but there are plenty of things you can get to get rid of them or at least reduce them. After I have got someone to combat the pests I will certainly try to block the gaps but remember it was Thai built and it will be some job. Pobably cost as much as the house. Anyway thanks everyone for the input. Still nobody has actually suggested any pest control companies in the area
I would have thught the long term solution would be to chase the bats and sparrows out ans seal up the entry points

Smoking ban due soon
BANGKOK: -- Smoking will soon be banned in night entertainment venues, once a new Health Ministry regulation takes effect, a seminar in Bangkok was told yesterday.
But Dr Seri Hongyok, a deputy head of the Department of Disease Control, said patrons of karaoke bars, pubs, nightclubs and cafes would still be allowed to smoke in designated areas.
"Smoking will be barred only in air-conditioned areas or in other public places where non-smokers are."
The department would enforce a regulation under which violators would face fines up to Bt20,000.
He said there were now 10 countries that impose no-smoking rules in night entertainment venues.
Seri said the rule was needed to cope with new marketing strategies employed by tobacco companies to lure more young people to smoke, as there were about 200,000 new smokers every year.
A study by the department found the number of woman smokers aged 15-24 had risen to third place on a top-10 ranking of smokers in Thailand, he said.
The number of night entertainment venues, meanwhile, has risen to 6,853 last year from 5,249 in 2005.
Songsak Watthanaphoon, owner of a popular venue in Chiang Mai, said his premises imposed a ban on smoking three years ago and had won praise from customers with young friends or children. Smoking customers had suffered minimally, he said.

So Thailand is following the lead of other countries.
Will Dr Seri Hongyok, a deputy head of the Department of Disease Control be advocating following the UK 's proposal to pass legislation enabling the prosecution of men who pay for sex (Daily Telegraph 10th Sept)? . Could be a money spinner in the Land of Smiles

Later he went to the DR and told him how he was 80 and having sex with a beautiful 18 year old 3 times every night.
The Dr said "You should be more careful too much sex at that age could result in death"
The old man looked at him and and said " If she dies she dies"
