  1. A friend of mine used to work for the German goverment here in Thailand and their advice was to leave straight away and sort it out later if anything ever came back to them. Basically leave and save yourself, i know i would do the same if it happened to me.

but imagine if the one that they are leaving lying on the road is your relative, may God forbid, what would you feel?

  2. Weigh up the probability of being caught vs unrestricted cash payout to smirking drunken nimrod on/off unlicensed motorcy with no helmet, insurance, brain, etc. Might be worth risking. "Honest officer... I never saw him." :o

this may be true if you are thai (local) but if you are farang you will be noticed. and by the way, all the other farangs will also get a bad image in that local community where the accident happened.

  3. For personal safety reason, is better to leave the car behind and head straight to the nearer police station for help, cause some untoward event might happen to the driver after an accident, that why most Thai driver would run away instead of waiting for trouble.

Yes. I've seen a mob of men chase after a tuk-tuk driver who had hit a local drunk staggering across a small soi.

they chased him maybe because he was trying to runaway as well. i have seen couple of accidents where the uninjured party helping the injured one and not leaving the scene until the police arrive. in such cases, why would the people around will try to hurt you when you're trying to help? it's an accident, it's not your intention to crash anyone...

leaving a car and going to the nearest police station is one thing but leaving with the car to nowhere to find is another...

  5. we have heard many times in this forum about thai drivers are running away after killing or injuring someone in an accident. well, yesterday afternoon one farang driver adopted this practice too! a friend called me this morning to convey the news about an accident in a small soi somewhere in sattahip involving a farang in his car and a thai man in a motorbike. the accident might have been the bike's fault but the bad is that the farang just drove away after the accident.

people who witnessed the accident have told that after the crashed the farang opened his window just to check on the thai man who is lying on the road motionless and then just driving away leaving the scene. bad luck for him tho, they got his plate number and i think they will catch him soon.

if it was you, would you runaway like he did? i won't. i would rather go out of my car and help the guy to get first aid and send him to the hospital. if he is dead, still you should not runaway...

  6. This is a very interesting thread! Also just in time that now I'm thinking of buying a 2nd hand euro car so perhaps I can post my questions here.

Which car/brand is better? Benz C180/C200 kompressor or BMW 323i SE? I'm currently looking at these two models (year 2002-2003) as they are in the same price range about 1.2 to 1.6 million baht but I still yet to know the difference in the cost of maintenance (dealer) and the availability of garage for some bodyworks in case of accidents and the cost of insurance. I bet that the depreciation of these two cars are the same and since that had already depreciated the most they won't depreciated much anymore in the coming say 5 years.

Anyone had bought 2nd hand of one of these cars and any suggestions? Will I bankrupt my pocket from the maintenance cost and the Mrs will kill me after buying one fo these? Should I buy a new japanese car instead? I already have 2 jap cars both bought new. If I will buy 1 euro car this time I had to let go one of the japs.

  7. Nothing is fare in life. Why would anyone expect fairness in Thailand? Thais can do whatever they want. It's their country, their laws, and their tactics. If you don't like it, then go elsewhere! The world is a big place.

    fully agree with this...

to all the whiners, start preparing your exodus back home or to other asian countries that you may think batter than thailand because the time has come the smiles in thailand have already turned sour towards us foreigners and it's not the thais fault but the bad amongst us ie. sex tourists, child molesters, fake teachers, druglords, mafias, scammers, etc. i can go on and on.

Whilst I agree to an extent that the 'bad' foreigners here have bought about some of the tightening of the rules against expats I can't agree that it's deserved in some way. A few 'bad eggs' are not an excuse to victimise everyone of the same ethnicity, thats playing the Nationalist card in the worst way.

The sex industry will not disappear if there are no westerners in Thailand. The vast majority of customers are homegrown Thai anyway.

There was a report recently, think I read it in the Bangkok Post, detailing child sex abuse in Thailand and that the problem is much as it is worldwide, that is people abusing others in their own family or close friends, ie Thai on Thai. Yes there is farang abuse, but a tiny percentage of the total.

Fake teachers, yes there are fake teachers and good luck in getting rid of them. The fact they are here has as much to do with lack of enforcement of current rules as anything else.

Drug lords, mafia and scammers are nearly all homegrown, some of them even sit in government!

you have a point but i'm talking 'bout whiners, complainers, and sort and that the law were tightened because of the bad amongst us so do not complain or better yet get out of thailand...

i'm not a whiner so i'll stay and accept the facts.

  8. I know the Peninsula hotel in Makati is nice...but this is getting ridiculous The last time these jokers staged an abortive coup they also based themselves at the Pen. I guess they have a membership with that hotel group. However, feel sorry for the owners...seeing that APC shooting-up the entrance and going through the front door must have caused some serious wear and tear on the furniture and carpets :o

Another day...another coup attempt in the Phils...what else is new :D

i guess they get good food and services in Pen everytime they staged a coup there. i saw cooks and waiters standing in the background from a photo published in one of the online newspaper.

they should grind these jokers and feed them to the ducks. in philippines, all they need is a heavy handed leader like the late Marcos but without the "scrambled egg brains".

  10. i drove the Gen2 (1.6) from a car rental in Malaysia and believe me it sucks! the engine roars without moving a meter, the automatic transmission has a mind of it's own (it's just downshift for no reason), no safety features at all (no airbag, abs, or whatsoever)... you get what you pay for. but ok, it's affordable but the resale value is very very low even in Malaysia. it's a disposable car.

  11. i heard that tommy was banned as he is a racist - he apparently made a remark that his products are not suited for asians or something like that. don't know if true or not...

That is an urban legend, he never said that, see link

    http://www.snopes.com/racial/business/hilfiger.asp

i can also deny that i never heard that...

by the way, after that incident some asian countries like philippines burned their tommyH clothes off the streets.

  12. and they did this to a thai person i guess (who cannot comprehend english menu). and how they knew that he/she have the available 200,000 baht in his/her bank? if the funds to be transferred aren't enough the transactions won't go through even for 20,000 baht. for sure one cannot have a negative account balance.

so i guess this is an inside job.

    Thai_narak...............

We just had a verbal (well syntax) exchange on another thread for the exact same reason.

Do you ever read the OP and subsequent posts before you comment, or do you have some nervous system problem that means your fingers have to be moving all the time.

Of course it was a Thai person - thats why they asked them to select the English menu (if you actually read the thread you will see a previous post where they have done it in Chinese also).

If the funds to be transferred aren't enough, they move on to the next greedy sucker.

Please tell us why this is an inside job.

i'm not in a mood going down to your level this time but i will make it clear to all.

of course he/she is a thai person but my point is how they instantly nailed a thai person with such money in the bank? calling randomly may fall 90% to a thai (as one poster have said) but how many of those are keeping much money in one ATM card? most thais have 2-3 ATM accounts i guess and the huge amount of their money are deposited in a fixed account. i may be wrong...

here is where i'm coming from... one day i went to BBL with my wife to open another joint account and during this transaction the attendant was going through our application forms. as she type my passsport number all my other BBL accounts profiles (name, address, telephone number, etc.) from another branch popped-up. although she didn't went through my account balances i just realised how easy it was for someone working in the bank to pull-out such information. this is why the question "was it possibly an inside job?".

they can also pull the scam on farangs using thai menu...

and sweetchariot, idiots are all around us you know? don't forget to drink that green pill before sleeping...

  13. have heard from thai friends living there:

    - motorcycle theft is common

    - seven eleven got rob 2 times this year

    - one mom&pop store owner got robbed and gunned down

    - yes, lots of burmese but really no harm. they work in the restaurants and furniture shops. they are nice people.

    - pubs, you have to drive a few kilimeters to sattahip. not so safe as some locals tend to bring gun with them in pubs.

    - nice place anyhow.

  14. A joke surely, no one could be so dumb as to fall for this :D

And of course they are counting on the person having 20K+ in the account :o Bull sh1t.

Edit... BTW, why does the victim not just go to the bank, they can find out who the account belongs to? Like i said, Bull.

It's not bull. It's been on the Thai TV news. In one particular case, they were conned into transferring 200,000 baht, not 20,000.

There was another case where the con woman was at an ATM talking on the phone to the target (the 'mark') and telling him which buttons to press. She got 100,000 baht. But her picture was taken by the ATM's camera (SCB) so the police at least know what she looks like.

So 'Yes', some people are greedy and stupid enough to fall for it.

and they did this to a thai person i guess (who cannot comprehend english menu). and how they knew that he/she have the available 200,000 baht in his/her bank? if the funds to be transferred aren't enough the transactions won't go through even for 20,000 baht. for sure one cannot have a negative account balance.

  15. Please visit Thailand before commenting.

sweetchariot, have you seen my location just under my avatar? i don't have to visit thailand because i live there.

gosh, some people here are idi0t...

My humble apologies. Perhaps I should have said please learn something about Thailand before commenting.

There are lots of monkeys that live here too, luckily they haven't learned to type yet, but when they do perhaps they could offer some more insightful advice.

I agree, some people here are idiots.

    apology accepted.

    don't eat too much banana...

  16. Somewhat unrelated, there was an old scam that I read about where the owners of the rental shops would follow the customers and either steal the motorbike using their copy of the key or remove a small part that would prevent the bike from starting. Then the customer would likely contact the shop who would gladly help by sending a mechanic of their choice who would charge an exorbitant amount for the "repair."

I hope someone can give you the advise you require. Good luck and happy holidays from now on. :o

this is unlikely. normally when there's a problem with a rental bike or car the company should replace it free of charge. they should have insurance or something to protect them in their rental business and they know the risks.

my advice is, return the bikes and complain to the owner that they were bandalised and you cannot use them in these condition. demand that they replace them ASAP or return your money back.

    enjoy your holiday!
