  1. if you did not do anything wrong why worry? sue them! yes, get a lawyer and sue them...

What if the lady actually was a minor, but looked and acted as not a minor.

I remember one of my first time to Thailand (looong time ago), and yes I met a bar girl.

She looked so cute and all, but I wanted to make sure she was not a minor so I asked to see her ID card.

Bet most of you already have heard about stories where underaged girls fool the guys, and then blackmail them later in order not to tell the Police.

Little did I know back then that it was not possible for me to actually read the card, as I didnt know the calender differences (543 years).

    So,

If the OP actually (without knowing it) had sex with a minor.

Would it not be self incriminating to follow up the story, and make a lawyer start digging?

I think the members here that advice OP to just forget it, as he has not been "picked up" by the police yet, are correct.

i would agree with you if the incident happened in europe or usa as the woman there looks older than their age. an 18 yrs old in thai will definitely look so young like a 13 yrs old american girl. if a thai girl looks like 18 yrs old chances are she is already 20+. but i may be wrong or the OP has eye problems...

  2. I saw a mythbusters episode where they dealt with this very question,

How do mobile phones affect avionics?

They tried many different ways of disrupting the avionics, using mobile phones with varying frequencies among other methods, and none of the tests showed the slighest amount of interference with the avionics systems.

    It is indeed a misnomer.

The government in the US looked into lifting the ban on in flight calls, but did not lift it mostly because people do not want to be stuck next to someone talking on their phone the whole flight.

if they lift the ban then it's good for us radio engineers as we can have more jobs optimizing the network to serve the skies. it will be a major upgrade for the radio base stations and antenna and new features for fast handover should be develop to cope with the airliner's speed. separate cell sites have to be designed just to serve the skies. unfortunately, 3G (UMTS) is not capable of this service due to its coverage limitation (500m to 1km only) as it is based on 2Ghz band and in this range of frequencies path loss so great. cell loading is also a possible problem due to the bundled subscribers on board the plane (200 people) that will cause the cell to shrink due to sudden increase of interference while they are passing the cell on softhandovers. so only GSM can evolved to provide such service. but i think it's still a bad idea...

  3. This was a great thread.

Would anyone like to contribute to a Thailand versus Indonesia comparison?

Why would ANYONE consider Indonesia as a possible place to retire. Indonesia is a MUSLIM country! Say no more!... :o

:D it never crossed my mind...

Indonesia is a Muslim country , but to say it is not a nice country to retire or whatsoever is

far crossed the line . I have travelled extensively through this country and it still amazes me

of the variety it offers . I loved the Sumatra people , but understand its a bit nono after all those

    earthquakes over there recently .

Java has got some nice places like Jog jakarta , not to forget Bali (Hindu ).

Also Sulawesi is pretty interesting and pre dominating christian by the way.

Maybe we Dutch have some more affection with Indo because of our past with

this country and that many Indo people are living in Holland , but it really does

surprise me nobody on this forum even considers Indonesia , it really is a beautiful country .

There are some parts on Java who are a bit to fanatic to live at for us expats , but this country

surprisingly perhaps , have many variations in its population and attitudes per districts.

It is a huge country with wonderful culture and terrific food , maybe even beter then Thai food ,

    at least at par .

When not travelled there and not knowing the people , I think it is very harsh to commend so

quickly on that , just because they are muslim , its not the Middle East you know .

i'm sure you are right tijnebijn. but 3 countries for me to fantasise are more than enough ie. thailand, philippines, and malaysia.

  4. put it like this. cellular network are not designed to served flying subscribers, simply because of mobility reason. all the systems we have now TDMA, GSM, CDMA, UMTS are not designed for the skies. in TDMA and GSM, fast handovers and roaming criteria for flying subscribers is not supported. roaming criteria means your registration to the network whether local or not, do you that we have divided the network in the several hundreds of location areas where your mobile has to re-register? of course you don't... also, antennas are not designed to propagate to the skies this is why we are tilting them downwards to avoid interfering each other, this is critical cellular networks. in UMTS and CDMA, the network will not necessarily crash but imagine 200 subscribers on-board trying to set up RRC to the cell site and all mobiles powering up because they are too far to the site, and then after 1-2 minutes move to another cel the do the same, this will cause overload to system and will screw up RRC drop statistic in the network although this is not necessarily a real problem but still the system is not designed to support this.

so, turn your phone off when you fly.

Thats not a reason to switch your phone off, but it is a reason for the network providers to get their act together.

    Cheers

of course you can turn it on as you like. the reason i wrote is in the network point of view and to stop these fighting guys writing about line of sigh, microwave, etc. that they don't even know about. read my last post about the reason to turn your phone off on board.

edit: by the way, i'm a radio engineer so i know what i'm talking about.

  5. there's no christmas celebrations except in the shopping malls for christmas sales. also, there's no working holiday in thailand.

if you dont like xmas you can miss it in thailand :o

mrs will not miss the christmas day sales tho... :D

  6. I thought cabin pressurization was independent of air-conditioning... shows how much I know about that :o

BTW a similar problem happened in the US - a private jet carrying golfer Payne Stewart lost pressurization and the occupants of the aircraft died of hypoxia.

wild guess, i never knew. but i really do not want to breath from your breathe.

  7. A mobile phone at ground level can be within range of multiple cells at the same time just the same as a mobile phone at 11,000m. The altitude of the phone is irrelevant to the cell network's software which passes the phone to whichever cell has the strongest signal regardless of the phone's altitude.

the altitude indeed makes all the difference, it's called line of sight and that means that on the ground you can never be connected to as many cells as you are in the air.

    It's simple physics.

    </a>

    Please check your facts first

"line of sight", or more usually, "direct line of sight" is a simple term describing a situation where a transmitter has an unobstructed straight line path to a receiver, or visa-versa. Microwave is an example of a transmission method which requires such a direct line of sight path.

Mobile phone signals require no such "line of sight" path. Their connectivity is limited only by the signal strength sent and received between the phone and the transmitter. The signal strength depends on the transmission power of the phone, the transmitter, the distance between each, the physical obstacles between each and the prevailing terrestrial and solar weather conditions at the time of transmission.

Cell network engineers may indeed not design their networks to provide service delivery for the aircraft scenario. If today, when such instances occur or in the case of the hiker on the mountain, it causes a cell network problems then the network software is the component at fault.

I hardly think airlines would have agreed to ban the use of mobiles in flight just to make the telcos happy although I'm sure the telcos are happy to provide airlines with a slightly modified dedicated service for inflight calls at a premium price.

But conspiracy theories between airlines and telcos is so way off topic this is the last I'll post on this thread.

two of you, yes YOU! stop fighting here.

put it like this. cellular network are not designed to served flying subscribers, simply because of mobility reason. all the systems we have now TDMA, GSM, CDMA, UMTS are not designed for the skies. in TDMA and GSM, fast handovers and roaming criteria for flying subscribers is not supported. roaming criteria means your registration to the network whether local or not, do you that we have divided the network in the several hundreds of location areas where your mobile has to re-register? of course you don't... also, antennas are not designed to propagate to the skies this is why we are tilting them downwards to avoid interfering each other, this is critical cellular networks. in UMTS and CDMA, the network will not necessarily crash but imagine 200 subscribers on-board trying to set up RRC to the cell site and all mobiles powering up because they are too far to the site, and then after 1-2 minutes move to another cel the do the same, this will cause overload to system and will screw up RRC drop statistic in the network although this is not necessarily a real problem but still the system is not designed to support this.

so, turn your phone off when you fly.

  8. If I recall correctly the plane that overflew Greece for several hours had an air conditioning problem (which is tied to pressurization?) so perhaps the term is correct - that the problem was the air conditioning system and no mention will be made of what this caused?

i agree. no airconditioning means no air fresh to breath at and no pressurization in the cabin. if the oxygen mask aren't working then this is very dangerous as the cardon dioxide concentration may rise and may become toxic.

  9. i don't have problem with local or cheap imported wines as most are fairly drinkable but the problem is that i cannot buy a bottle anytime of the day because of government restriction of i don't know what time. took a bottle last time in lotus pattaya only to return it to the shelves when the saleslady told me that it they are not allowed to sell alcohol in this time. :o

  10. if you are flying and are 35,000ft or 10.66km above the ground you may not have any cellular coverage at all. the maximum distance of a cell in GSM operating in 900Mhz in 35km (for extended cells only and this is a feature activated only in rural areas).

Found exactly what I was looking for - thanks. In the case of 9/11, they were above rural Pennsylvania - where the signal coming from a tower would likely be at its strongest.

A signal isn't likely, though, if you are near a city, unless you get close to ground.

exactly, that's why it was possible for them to make calls and send SMS. the system in Penn is TDMA (much more like GSM).

  11. The problem with using mobile in an airplane is that

A mobile used on the ground connects to one cell in the network, but at altitude it can connect to many different cells, thereby possibly causing confusion and problems in the cellular system.

If you are flying near a border, you could connect to cells in two different countries, the system cannot tell where you are because you are simultaneously connected to two different cells in two different countries.

In the USA they use mainly CDMA/TDMA cellular systems and to a lesser extent GSM systems, whereas in Thailand they are solely on the GSM network, very different systems with different charecteristics.

    just some comments...

in GSM and TDMA you connect to one cell at a time and handover to another cell as you move but in CDMA/UMTS/3G you always connects to 3-4 cells, they call this softhandover. as you move, the serving cells changes depending on your signal strenght and C/I ratio. all this assuming you're on the ground not flying.

if you are flying and are 35,000ft or 10.66km above the ground you may not have any cellular coverage at all. the maximum distance of a cell in GSM operating in 900Mhz is 35km (for extended cells only and this is a feature activated only in rural areas). this is the farthest distance and shrinks as frequency goes up in the higher band; 3G is in 2Ghz band and may have a coverage of approx. 500m depending on the load. the antennas are also not facing up in the sky to cover the passing airliners but are tilted downwards to the cities, road, and people's houses. cellphones may work in the airport while you are taxiing (obviously) or just above the ground for maybe a few kilometers above the ground from the signals reflected from buildings, water (or sea), mountains, etc. but not for more than 10km. also, the aircraft is sheilded and the signal looses more than 3db when inside the airline.

the main reason i think that the mobiles are not allowed (to turn-on) is that when they are powered "on" the mobiles are constantly trying to establish connection to the network (we call this location update in telecom) when they are out of coverage. when the mobiles are searching for the network they are using power step alogorithm to the point that they are on "full power" when they are trying to do "location update" to the network that is picked-up (in a very weak signal of about >-110 dbm in GSM) and this procedure may cause interference to any electronic devices. the "location update" procedure will continue until it's successful.

  12. Glad you're ok, Jai Dee...
Edit: after re-reading the original post I apologise for assuming Jai Dee sent the sms in-flight as it appears it may have been sent after landing.

If you were on the flight do you think you would've had the presence of mind to send an SMS as the plane was descending at high speed for an emergency landing? Or would you have tried to call your wife or significant other instead of SMSing your colleagues?

Anyhow, there is plenty of evidence that mobile usage does not affect aircraft communication systems. On top of that, they don't even work until you get close to ground.

if i can recall correctly several people on-board the planes that crashed WTC on 9/11 made several calls and sms's to their love ones.

  13. i like both places and both have goods and the bads but that's true everywhere in the world. philippines and its people will never be like thailand and vice versa.

but the OP did miss philipino camaraderie. i have lived and work in the philippines in '95 and have had few close colleagues/friends, well, what can i say the people are more friendly and more open than thai people. i have been to their houses, family gatherings, fiestas, you name it, they are very hospitable people. this contradicts the american way. in contrast, i have also been working in thailand a few years and had and still have friends there but not really close friends i can say. i have never been invited to any house or family gathering, not that i want to, but it's nice to get invitation sometimes from friends even they don't expect you to come. the invitation i always get in thailand are the weddings in the hotel where you have to give back the invitation envelop (gift) to the couples. i always did.

diving, this is crazy in the phillipines and no country in asia can beat this! food, OK it's bland than thai food but that's because it's not spicy enough to give a kick. i have been in diffirent provinces in the PI and the food varies. going south makes the food spicier and hotter. if you like thai food go in the south of PI. beer, SMB is a good beer way better than budweiser piss. and yes, my favorite city, baguio city the 6,000 feet city above sea level which is also called the summer capital is more like chiangmai but it is much colder all year around. this is the place that i'm planning to invest at least one unit of condo. it's a nice foggy place.

to the OP. go back and explore the PI some more. don't stay in manila! like in thailand you don't stay only in bangkok!

  14. I was in Paragon Mall last week and couldn't help but notice how excrutiatingly hard many Thai men and women there try to look excessively Hi-So. It's pretty obnoxious how they saunter around like they're a Thai superstar or mogul at a country club... I can only tolerate being there for a short time and then it wears on me. I'm starting to feel that Thai men with a little money are nothing but oversexed, adulteristic, big-face-chasing egotists. Anyone feel the same? While I'm on a roll I also must say that I'm also bored of the little cuffed shorts, ambiguous top, and flat shoes that the younger Hi-So-striving women wear. All that excess precision makeup work too. They all look like clones! Why all the effort to impress others? Any ideas?

Simplest way to solve that one is not to go to Paragon. Per square foot is must be the most expensive shopping centre in Bangkok and probably contains more millionaires per square foot during opening hours than anywhere in Thailand.

Or didn't you notice the Chanel, Cartier, Armani and LVMH signs on the doors. It is an expensive place. Be thankful they don't have a dress policy to get in or did you never try to get past the security guards in LVMH in London?

Just to let you know there are plenty of wealthy people in this country. Where would you like them to go?

or better yet go back to your home country. don't you have better thing to do in thailand than to go to malls and watch people shop and tell everyone here that they are trying to look rich?
