  1. I just viewed another one today... The place was a mess. Told agent to turn on the water. Kitchen faucet had no water flow at all 🤡. Bathroom sink faucet spurts out in two weak streams. Place was filthy. Showing this trash is bad for an agencies reputation. They need to get this bunk fixed before places are shown. Answer, was it will be cleaned and fixed before move in. So view it a second time I guess when it's presentable?? Some bloke had left it vacant ages ago and returned to the Uk and just let juristic deal with it. This was also in one of the better buildings in town (not a cheap building). Lots of hogwash being shown by the agents in town currently. I'm going to start taking pictures and posting them here if it's allowed.
  2. The other option seems to be buying new sofa's and mattresses and leaving it in the unit when you leave (easier and cheaper then moving it), assuming the landlord agrees to it. Or, rejecting units that have furniture you don't want to live on for a year. I recently saw one with a sofa that had large piss stains. I did not bother looking at the mattress for stains there... The owner lived in the phillippines and the unit was used as an airbb party pad rental, turned long term rental via an agent. The building staff seemed to coordinate things and just let the place to to hell, except for minimal cleaning between visitors. One of those investment properties that are rented out. Refurnishing the place for free for the landlord and hoping the landlord says nothing when you vacate. Factor that into the rental price. What a hassle...
  3. I would hate to have a guy like you in any sort of risky occupation or in a partner capacity. You may do your duty, but inside it's not in you. They try to weed guys like you out when they hire for jobs that require team functioning or taking risks for other team members. I can understand you wanting to protect your wife however.
  4. The Op actually sounds like a jaded Thai to me, not a foreigner. There is a tone of superiority that I usually get off Thai's. It sounds like a Thai who is complaining that there are not more wealthy foreigners around to support him or whatever business they are in.
  5. and... welcome to the real world.
  6. Apart from the structure modification aspect, why can't you do that with a rental? I noticed the rentals are usually furnished here. Is it taboo to bring in your own furniture, stuff, etc. (other then just a few suitcases)? It does "feel" like the place needs to be kept as it is in Thailand when I rent. Combine that with someone from the building/landlord coming into clean the place every few days and it downright starts to feel like someone else's space needs to be maintained as it was at move in time. That's very different from the Usa where I'm from, where it is common for a household of things to be moved into a rental making it feel like home rather quickly.
  7. Don't you need transportation up in Wongamat? Or is it possible to live as a pedestrian and have enough food places nearby? Not interested in taking taxi's everywhere. Obviously i dont want to eat at the same few restaurants every day. The places I saw online looked nice but they were very removed from anything, down really long streets with nothing, etc when I looked on google streetview.
  8. Many people can't just let cash sit in a bank account. Similar to having a credit card, if it's liquid it gets spent. Buying property locks up the money.
  9. That would work if I did all that when I paid the deposit to reserve and not later on the actual move in date. Then the keys being handed over on move in date with first months rent. I would have the contract and all and if they ran with the deposit before I moved in it would just be a deposit dispute. Thank you.
  10. You will be more bored in thailand unless you speak thai. Not being able to interact fully is isolating which will increase your boredom significantly. You're probably better off in florida and I would guess your daughter and wife may not mind living there part of the year. Send some postcards of the clean beach and water.
  11. It's feeling different here then when I left a year ago... The traffic is much worse and something is strange with the unavailability of rentals. Last time I was here I found a place right away and enjoyed walking around. I'm having thoughts about relocating back to Chiang Mai. It could be a no, but I will try another month to see if I just need more time to settle in.
  12. I'm worried about paying a deposit to someone I met on facebook. I would need to hand over a deposit upfront to reserve the room before I move in. If it was an agent with a physical office it would be Ok. You can get people who are advertising their own rooms (then skip with a bunch of deposits), and/or other types of scams.
  13. Not really. It seems kind of far away.
  14. There seems to be a lot of condo flipping in pattaya now. I don't think it's a normal turnover, but seems to be people who purchased then changed their mind rather quickly for some reason. Maybe people who could not find satisfactory rentals and decided to buy, or people who could not afford to buy and bought anyway. A couple of the real estate agents asked if I wanted to buy when I asked about rentals which felt odd. Also, they did not have much to rent when I went in, like they were mostly just interested in sales. One never got back to me at all. I still have not found anything I like and it's coming up on 3 weeks.
  15. How long was it before you decided to move back to the Us and what is your age? I'm kind of feeling the same thing. I miss the feeling of being productive. Sometimes Thailand feels like I'm just burning time and not getting anything done or building something better (not moving ahead in life).
  16. If money was not an issue thailand would be empty...
  17. Those property listing sites in thailand are a waste of time. The reason being that thousands of people list properties and don't remove the listing when it's rented out. They just leave them on until next year when the lease would expire for a new tenant. The sites do not police or vett. Even the agent I worked with gave up vetting ads submitted to his own website. He would check each one as I asked, then remove them one by one after he tried to contact the property owner and they would almost always say the place was already rented or just outright not answer because they typically list everywhere, not just with one agent and they don't want to answer useless phone calls all day. ⬇️ So it's hard to actually see pictures of available units a lot of the time. What typically happens is you go into an agent and they drive you around to units they know are immediately available, or show you listings that they have recently checked as available, and you need to choose one. 🫡
  18. Like where? Do you advertise on Facebook or do you have a website with actual live current listings?
  19. I'm looking now and I don't see very many deals. In fact, several of the real estate agencies in town have nothing but junk and I can't even find available units on their websites and they don't have much of anything when I ask, even after trying for a couple weeks. It's always unavailable. I did find some very few in town for around 18k baht I like that were not rented out. I don't call that cheap, although I'm used to living up in Chiang Mai. Other buildings all say full when I ask. There were others for 13k-15k a month, but they were just box type vacation condos, not something I would consider as a permanent living situation. I even resorted to getting an Airbb for a month, as I could find nothing suitable. Your report of a glut of places and/or cheap prices is off base.
  20. Contrary to popular belief, most people focus on what they are insecure about, not what they have achieved. The primary reason for this (my theory) is that one needs to place insecurities onto other people in order to be rid of them (either just the thought/feeling of them, or sometimes the actual problem). The reason (my theory) of why achievements and accomplishments are not treated the same way is similar. By talking about them they are, in their head or sometimes physically by giving away advantages, plans & info, symbolically/unconsciously giving away what is owed or accomplished to other people. The more positive, obvious and immediate the declaration tends to be (like right away or at a bar stool) the more someone is worried about that issue and needs to rid themselves of it. On the flip side, it can also manifest as complaining which is the same thing, that is a discharge of problems and the associated energy onto an external target. The deciding factor of how it's conveyed is probably what the person thinks you will listen to more in the immediate situation, or their personality.

It's mostly Mexicans now, not Russians.
  22. Dating in a major Usa city these days is incredibly difficult unless your the captain of your college rugby team. Think office cocktail Christmas party in a big lonely city where you get laughed at for approaching (if you had the balls to initiate) and where going home alone is the norm. Even if you manage to score serious dates, a win in itself, they are likely to be interview type dates, not romantic type dates. Several of those follow before there is any hint of intimacy and you are likely to get "ghosted" should you be bold enough to try anything. You would be lucky to even get a hooker to put out without ripping you off on the way home. Women really do hold the stick and carrot there these days for an average man in major Usa cities. Most guys are so desperate to grt laid that they become "simps" in every situation with women which makes it even harder to grt laid. If you are middle age or older it's even more difficult and many guys simply use hookers, but end up getting robbed or setup by the police as it's very illegal in the Usa and they setup stings or traps for prospective "john's". If you do find one to hold still it's typically a very rushed mechanical experience, often not even bothering to remove clothing or say anything at all.
