  1. A lot of the smaller primary schools have closed down where we live (cost savings?)......and we now see primary school aged kids riding motorbikes to and from school
  2. House just finished near us.......mainly orange, with corner posts in brown and boundary walls in lilac and green. Each to his own.
  3. The 'real' US unemployment figure (latest), U6, is 7.9%......so significantly worse than the UK.......just sayin'
  4. No way your on his reading list. I only posted one comment and was summarily struck off.....555
  5. Mentioned it on another thread....rocket and feather pricing......the oil companies are always a win-win.
  6. I recall having a conversation with my brother......a through the ranks Colonel.......and the justification for whatever went on!! He said the whole shebang hanged (hung?) on one point......the British Army is a Christian Army.
  7. Just in case anyone might be interested……. Went large and applied for the luxury route…..VFS Global, Hyatt Regency. Arrived 1230 for the biometrics, appointment was at 1300. Only people there. Offered coffee and biscuits. 1235 shown into the office, shown out of the office 1240…..all done. Issued with a 650B breakfast voucher valid till June 1. Passport plus visa arrived via the post eight days later. The big advantage, having said all that, was the ability to upload all the required documents right up to the day before the appointment. Will definitely use this route again. Hope that might help someone.
  8. Bad enough being fired, but finding out your replacement is an uneducated plumber must really rankle.
  9. Cheers....think I'm getting there....thanks for your patience and help.
  10. Sticking my oar in because I was blown away by the effect of Naproxen. I had a bout of trochanteric bursitis.....agony for days, couldn't move or sleep. Took one tablet and was bouncing around like a spring lamb......probably not the clever thing to do.
  11. This was my understanding..... The SRT is about residency status for worldwide taxation, not a loophole to escape tax on UK earnings. If money arises from UK sources, it falls under UK tax jurisdiction no matter what. I had NT for my landlords income for a few years in the 90's, but all that did was avoid being taxed at source......i still had to pay UK tax on it through my self return????
  12. I'm not arguing as my knowledge is very sketchy on this topic, more looking to be educated...........but I thought as UK citizen you could only 'avoid' UK tax on foreign earnings by claiming to be non-resident for tax purposes.....and you could 'never' avoid UK tax on UK earnings.
  13. A guy I know, who knows someone who met another guy in a bar.....said that airlines are taking bookings in the knowledge the flights are pure fantasy, holding the money on account then making refunds minus booking fees. Clever.
  14. I know there'll be huge resistance, but at some point they will have to move to taking a fixed payment per diner and then pay back the balance after dining. Same with bookings.....a fixed fee to book, non-returnable for no-shows.
  15. Aren't you are always a UK tax resident......for UK income.
  16. Chaiyaphum...if I stay here.....but I have four pensions, so touch wood, shouldn't be a problem.
  17. Take everything as a matter of course......I take my third place certificate in Corner Spry.....1964 ......and every certificate since.
  18. If you have an economy ticket during the affected dates, you can either: Rebook onto another Qatar Airways or partner flight within two weeks of your original date, at no extra cost. Request a refund if you prefer not to travel. The policy is temporary and tied to the closure of Qatari airspace and the regional conflict.
  19. Rocket and feather pricing......the oil companies never lose out.
  20. I think they have the notion that cutting off oil supplies from Venezula and Iran to China is going to give them leverage...amongst other things......I doubt the Chinese are panicking too much.
  21. I'm switching from marriage to retirement next year and have no intention of tying up 800,000. That can go into this year's ISA (tax free, 4.7%) or global funds. I've already started transferring the 65k pm, so I'll have 12 payments made by next time around. We don't spend anything like 65k a month so I'll look at transferring what we don't spend into the wife's account and, if the numbers look okay, ship it back to the UK and reinvest it there.
  22. Made it.....30 day consideration granted at least!! Bank, no queue sorted in 10 mins. IO not too busy, made it through pre-check okay....although I notice the new photo requirements don't require the whole house is in view.....WT....? New Community Attestation form accepted (had the village head witness it) Waited no more than 5 mins to get called up, then................it began. Every page was inspected at least thee times. We had to have our photos taken on the official camera as normal, but then the IO officer took out his iPhone and wanted a photo of our marriage certificate, a photo of us holding up the marriage certificate....then a selfie with all three of holding it up????? Then we paid the 1,900 and I'm thinking, back of the net, done......nope. He went back through every page submitted and put a tiny stamp bottom right corner.....then initialed each stamp. Finished? Nope. We were asked to move down one and another officer went through every page and got all excited when she realised I had a new bank book, but hadn't submitted a copy of the front pages.....got that sorted. Then the IO officer stood up, said they had an interview and went.......left us sat there. Eventually another officer seemed to take pity and started asking, father's name, mother's name, brother and sister's name, UK telephone number, where did we meet, when did we meet, when did we marry (FFS we've been married for 20 years). he printed out some more forms in Thai which we signed.....no idea what they were........then the original officer came back and asked the same questions.......finally after 90 minutes....stamp. By now there wasn't an empty seat in the place. Transferred 65k yesterday......not going through that again.
