  1. post-39117-1235796411_thumb.jpg

Looks like a 7/11 birthday cake!?!

Sorry, just kidding, the best smorgasbrod buffet I ever had was at Cafe Opera in Stockholm.

Admiral cafe, in Bangkok, used to make so descent ones for Sunday brunch.

I agree, I had café operas smörgåsbord ones and it is very good. No clue if they still do it.

Where in Bkk is admiral cafe located?

The pics are just the quickest i could find (wikki) and not in any way representing how these things normaly look. They come in many different versions. Normally bigger ones will contain different "sections" on the cake, for instans one half with seafood and one half with beef and so on.

  2. It might have a little to do with the soc.security system aswell. In my own country, if i get a cold, i call in sick and can be home for 5 days with 80% of my salary and wait the thing out. In Thailand, being home for a few days is something many Thais can´t afford for one thing, and they stand the chans of loosing their job. Threfore they want to get back to work as soon as possible so they eat alot of medicine......

From what i´ve seen in hospitals, thai doctors seem to think of antibiotic as somekind of candy that is good to take always, needed or not. Paracetamols are something that all thais seem to think of as a dayly candypill.

  3. It´s a Swedish big sandwich. Alot of stuff on it. I have not found any here. Its hrd to make a good one here because of certain things not being availible. If you want to give it a go, you can buy "leverpastej" in bigc and "rostbiff" at angelas in maenam. Remuladsås and rostad lök is stuff you wont find. Aswell as svenska västlusträkor. :o . If you do manage to do a ok smörgåstårta, be sure to invite me, i really miss it also! :D:D .

  4. A few years ago, a friend of mine bought a box of Carlsberg sort guld in Germany. He stored that box on his balcony in Sweden in december (cold!). When he started drinking it tasted bad. He phoned up carlsberg brewery in Denmark, and got to speak with the brewmaster. The brewmaster told him that beer is not suppose to be stored colder than +8 degrees celsius (normal fridge temperature) because it reveals some ingredient in the beer and gives it the bad taste my friend had described. Since the German cans didnt have this information on the can, carlsberg paid up and my friend could buy new beer on their account! What a company!

So, how is this valid in this thread? Well, in Thailand, many places have a habbit of storing the beer VERY cold. Alot of Thai shops even put their beers in the freezer, and eventually (if they remember) the move them to the fridge. Sometimes after a full day in the freezer. That beer is ruined.

I buy my beer unchilled, in tesco, macro or bigc. I put it in my own fridge and chill it slowly. A day. It always taste good. No surprices.

Chang is a carlsberg recepy, dont know who own chang nowadays but the beer is carlsberg. They have the same in Denmark. Same can. Its called elephant beer. For sure to cold storage ruins it completely. Next time you get a bad tasting chang (bottle or can) try to notice if it foams (did i get that word right? the white thing on top of the glass) alot. Then it is ruined by the to cold storage.

  5. Happened more than one time to me and my wife that we go out, order food and only one of us get food. In Thailand we are never served at the same time anyway, so by the time the one has finished the meal we start to say "did you understand that we also ordered....". And they say "no, solly, you ordered only one". It really pisses me off. I can fully understand that it can be my english/Thai that is confusing. But what i have problems with is that i always ask 2 times "did you understand?". When the waitress say "yes" i think it´s her job to make sure she got it right. And lets face it, if there is 2 persons on the table, and i got only one order on my paper, should i not be able to think myself "maybe i should doubblecheck because it really makes little sence that they ordered food only for one, lets ask and see if i got it right"?

Op was funny. And did the right thing. Laughed about it and solved the situation. He didnt make her loose face. She did that herself.

  6. I don´t know what is australian style or English style when it comes to fish and chips. I always got served a plate with fish, chips and tartarsauce. Thats it! The nara garden in banrak (left side at the end of the village heading towards the airport) has a tasteful fish and the tartar sauce taste good to. There´s a place in maenam, on the left side 15 meters after the lights, that i forgot the name of, that also has very good fish and chips. To my taste.

I never had it at billabong, but that would probably qualify as Australian style since it is a Aussie place.

  7. Last year both Honda dealers (Nathon and Mae nam) quoted me the same price for a new click. There is another bike shop on the ring road just after the junction to Fishermans village, they had lots or used clicks and mios etc in the back for sale and all the new ones at the front. Dont know the name of the place though.

That is Yamaha. But on their second hand bikes they are quite expensive. They do financing so therefore they can charge alot on selling bikes to thais with no money, monthly payments. I done quite a few deals with them over the years, and in general they are good to deal with, but finding somebody who speaks proper English there is always a hassle. Would not reccomend it for second hand bikes to be honest, but thats me.

Are you sure were on about the same place, it didnt have and big dealer signs anywhere, they sold new hondas and yamahas, the second hand stuff seemed pretty reasonable (clicks starting at 35k)

The Yamaha dealer is on the left side right after the bophut lights. Coming from chaweng. They sell second hand bikes of all brands but only Yamaha brand new.

A Honda click is around 40k brand new in Bangkok. A year old on the private market you´ll get it under 30k nowadays. I´f you´re not in a hurry and can wait for a good deal to show up.

We probably are talking about different places. And i agree that if you are bying second hand bikes from dealers, go to a small one and not the brand shops. Unless you are Thai and need financing on the bike! :o

  8. Brand New Honda Wave 125, electric start, disc brakes front (and back if possible) what's the going rate? Not sure I would go second hand given the amount of rebuilt bikes i've heard about.

The honda wave comes in the following editions, (the way i understood it). The "s" modell has no discbrakes but electric start. The "R" modell has discbrakes but no electric start. I recently sold one of each model. Both of them were about 2 years old and between 1500 to 2000 km:s on them. The "s" model with the electric start gained more (unbeleiveble because it has less power and is more uncomfortable to ride, and a real biker dont enjoy the "drumbrake" on the front), but i think the thing is farangs need electric start. I got that oppinion from people looking on the bikes. I even had English people comming, saying "sorry, no electric start, thanks" !!!

Anyway, one or 2 years old wave with less than 2000 km:s on it, today at this island i would say, dont be shy to present the idea of 13000 baht. For a 125 cc bike. If it is a "s" model dont increase it further. If it is a "R" model, and you can bare wth the fact of a kickstart, or put electric start on it for a few thousand baht, you might go up to 15k. But at that price you most certanly get it. But not i the shops. You have to go private. Messageboards at tesco, bigc and macro, and dont forget to bargain. For some reason the "gearbikes" are not bringin any money either as rentals or sales nowadays. Seems all farangs want automatic bikes with electric start. The worst you can try to sell is a bike with gears and no electric start. Then you sell it to a thai because i dont think the farangs nowadays even get to start it, hahha.

Anyway, hope i helped you with the pricepicture, wich is quite accurate because i recently sold bikes of all models.

    Good luck :o

  9. where are the prices? i often wonder how they can be rented at 150bt per day they must be cheap to buy.

The prices of what? You tell me what you want (modell and year) and i tell you what you will be able to get and for what price. I think i can do even better than that by pointing you in some real subject for sale. Honestly think i´m becoming an expert on this particular subject. Try me! :o .

  10. If anyone is interested, Angela,s in Maenam has locally grown avocados for sale for 150 baht per Kg. (at MAKRO 350 baht)

Support our samui farmers. Thais do not eat avocados for some reason, so Angela has taken them onboard.

I bought a kilo and they are delicious.

I've been to Maenam once or so. Can you please tell me where I can find this Angelas?

    Zorne

Angelas is in the begining of maenam. On the left side. The first 7/11 you come to after bophut (left side), there is a big yellow sign saying (anybody expect anything else? :o ) "Angelas". It is a must to know where she is! Her avocados must be the local small stuff for that price and i won´t bother. But her baguettes with roasted lamb/beef is a killer! I´m so glad to see she manage to survive. I heard her last year saying she was struggeling because a major hotel she did breakfast for gave up the contract. Luckily she is still going strong and we should all support her, it is so nice to have a good bakery on the island and to my oppinion she is for sure the best! Dont miss it! :D

Ohh, and KILLER sausage rolls! Dont miss those either!!! I´m not even English and normaly don´t particulary fancy sausagerolls but her´s is truly amasing. Even my Thai wife loves them to death!!!

  11. After the Tsunami, Samui had the upper hand regarding tropical beach tourism in the LOS and, in classic and completely predictable form, they dropped the ball. Big Time.

There is simply no vision at any governmental level on the Island that does not involve lining one's pockets or bowing to the threat of some other authority -- legitimate or otherwise.

Samui's saving grace is that it is a small island, and change can potentially come fast! But first and foremost, a comprehensive overall of the infrastructure MUST be installed. Without it, Samui will always be like the young, gifted athlete who'd rather drink, womanize and play the hot-shot role than get serious and have an enviable life.

    I couldnt agree more dave.

On the other hand, TAT seem to be realizing (as Samui tourism assosiation sit and drink sangsom thinking everything is better than ever) that things needs to be done in order to gain back tourists to Thailand. They recently came up with the idea of a "Thai national drink" to promote themselves (it´s a joke i know but still, can´t blame them for trying). And today i got a e-mail from TAT saying they now open their own homepage to show Thailand as a tourist destination. http://amazingthailand.tourismthailand.org...s/traveler2.htm

To bad samui tourism assosiation still seem to have the oppinion our figures are going up. :o .

Let´s see if they eventually after this highseason (worst i history?) wake up and smell reality. You never know...

  12. "I'd rather get a sun tan....but I sit in the shadow";

    "I make my own food because the restaurants on the road suck....I found some really good places to eat on the road";

"You took him to shitty places to eat...I really like that one place by the waterfall."

    on and on and on.

It is easy to find contradiction if you leave out words. I´d rather get a sun tan than watch a movie. The secret of not getting completely black is to sit in the shadow on the beach. You will get a tan there also though. White sand reflects the sun. You get a tan, but you dont turn red or black. Clear enough for you?

You took him to mostly (leaving out important words like that is what create contradiction) shitty places. The one that were not shitty is the one by the waterfall.

The food on the roads are in general no good, thats why i bring my own on the roadtrips. I did however find a few spots along the way with good food. But all in all the food on the road is no good to my oppinion.

I would´nt buy that book. Reading a persons constant will to missunderstand oppinions is not for me. But go ahead and write it.

Sorry for being so off topic, but i had to answer that attack. I swear i leave your film thread alone now. (If you dont attack me personally again that is) :o

  13. If I spent as much time in the sun on the beach as you claim to, I'd have a good tan. What's your secret?

While most people i talk to tells me i have a nice tan, you offcourse want to claim the opposite.

Because I don't live in Sweden. If I did, I would think you have a nice tan instead of wondering how you stay so white.

But the secret of not getting completely black, when on the beach 5 times/week is to sit in the shadow. Allthough, in your case i would not reccomend it. If you ever come out of that dark room daytime i would try to get as much sun as possible. You might want to rub that white skin with sunfactor 175 or something first though. :o:D

Thaivisa could publish a book of contradicting posts by mattias:

    "I'd rather get a sun tan....but I sit in the shadow";

    "I make my own food because the restaurants on the road suck....I found some really good places to eat on the road";

"You took him to shitty places to eat...I really like that one place by the waterfall."

    on and on and on.

I'll PM you about the possibility about filming a documentary about you and your posting habits and premier it next year at the 3rd Annual KPG Film Festival - during their 14:00 matinee showing. :D:D

    Touchy boy.

  14. Some one might be interested to buy a B 2 million company without cash on the balance sheet, if they don't have the B 2 million to put into a new one of their own, and are satisfied there are no contingent liablilties or lurking tax problems. It is up to the buyers to do their own due diligence but personally I think you will have to find either some one who knows you personally and trusts you or some one totally naive. You have a personal tax liability, if you sell it at a profit i.e. more than you paid for it which should be your share of the B 2 million capital. The Revenue Dept will probably not accept the price if you sell for less than book value. Voluntarily liquidating the company, as far as I know, will involving advertising in a paper to ensure that any creditors have a chance to claim before it is closed down and the Revenue Dept may want to investigate the company for any tax liabilities. The Revenue Dept takes a long time to get around to investigating companies and it could take them two or three years to sign off on the liquidation.

So, in other words, sound quite impossible to sell a company. ?.

  15. Mattias they are not an organized mafia :D they are just scamming tourists.

taxi drivers world wide, once seeing you are a tourist will quote an inflated price, or take roundabout routes to increase their fares and find other creative ways to charge customers extra.

every country in the world has the same problem with taxi scams so your friend better stay home. where no one will rip him off.

even your own lovely Sweden has a problem with that

    http://www.thelocal.se/16868/20090112/

nice reading makes you think twice before you use the Swedish taxi service. or maybe we should not go to Sweden because they have a taxi mafia there :o:D :lol

First of all, Sweden has nothing to do with a thread about Samui taxi. Secondly, you know, wether you admit it or not, that we are not talking about taxis taking a little extra route with tourists here. We are talking about a group of proffession, were 100 % agreed upon that the law of Thailand is nothing they follow. You can find scams in every kind of buisness in every part of the world. Agreed highdiver. But the unique part in samui is that you can NOT find ONE taxi that uses the taximeter, wich infact is the law in this country. Thats not something you see in many places of the world. Or even in Thailand. It is quite unique for Samui. And it does scare tourists away. Beleive it or not.

  16. riding a honda wave is like having sex with a fat bird.

good to ride but you wouldnt want your mates to see ya. :D:wai::D:D

    :o

    Go for it, why not?

Very enjoyable and see all the sites on the way.

    2 things:

Ensure the bike is serviced & checked before the trip and strap a cushion onto the seat to avoid a sore bum and having to walk like John Wayne for the next 2 weeks.

Good post. But i think the op already did the trip. :P .

What a fun thread btw. Inspiration! Sounds so fun. The good old days with roadtrips. Just the man and his bike. Gotta love it!

Any nice pictures of the trip except for the wave-pic? Feel free to post them! :D

  17. While i don´t want to highjack an important thread, i still have to say 2 comments:

1: the hospitals on this island of mad-driving without helmets while drunk, dont keep bloodbanks of all bloodgroups??? :o

2: Is it not possible to get it fast from surathani or even Bangkok in case of emergensy? :D .

Hospitals on this island maintain the joke they always been. :D . You have a friend that need blood, try to find it on thaivisa. Or maybe tesco lotus message board..

Btw, good initiativ to try to help her out this way at least. Hope she make it.
