  1. I am sure I have been to MANY MORE countries than you have and some of the best food in the world is in the USA. Sweden does not rate. The reason: VERY LIMITED basic ingredients because of the climate there.

    :wai::P :jerk: :burp::burp: .

Please stop!!!! You are making a bigger fool of yourself and your country than Bush ever did!!!

    American foodculture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o:D:D:D:D .

Ok, actually, go on. This is so pointless that i will stop!!!!!

  2. Its american food.

No, it is cheap FAST FOOD.

A Swede, the black hole of cuisine, attacking the culinary richness of the USA. Now, that's rich.

The "black whole of cuisine"?????????????????????? Attacking the "culinary richness of usa"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

You really need to travel the world boy.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Usa "culinary rishness"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    :o

This was the most amusing post i ever read during my two years on thaivisa. Please share whatever you are smoking!!!!! :D:D:D:D

  3. Sure some of the stuff is edible, like the hot dogs.

But the salmon sandwhich? What a joke! A bare hint of salmon

in some crummy bread quickly pressed...

I really think some expats here have forgotten just how good

even the most humble salmon sandwhich is in the west...

What's next caviar and steak? Some things just cannot be sold like

    that.

7-11 is pushing it and I really resent seeing them sprout up like mushrooms

everywhere now..must be 10 in the Victory Square area alone.

You might be on to something here. I myself always thought Americans are used to this. I come from sweden and mcdonalds, 7/11, kfc, burger king, pizza hut and on and on, american foodchains, it all basically taste like paper. They will call t "salmon sandwich" and it is paper. They will call it "big mac" and it is paper. You say over here westerners forgot how real food taste. Wich might be truth. But what i think it is, is that American foodculture is like this. It taste like a paper dipped in floating fat. Its american food. Take a look at the population from there and you might find some answers. I think 7/11 food is the same in every country over the world. Just as mcdonalds and kfc and so on. Dont blame Thailand for the lack of taste in the us.

Edit: 7/11 is the same all over the world. Has nothing to do with Thailand. Its an American chain.

  4. You know you are in Thailand when Locals get to get in for free or charged less than you (Farangs) when going inside of Temples, parks, waterfalls etc etc..... :o

Yeah, that one is amazing. Thais-free, farangs 400 baht! (waterfall in koh chang a few years ago). In the bayok skytower buffé in Bangkok (wich use to be 400 baht for everybody) a few years ago they said farang 800 baht, thais 400! (They might have changed it now). I came to think of doing it in my country in Europe. Open a pizzaplace and say "pizzas for swedes 40, for foreigners 100!". I would be in jail before the first grand opening day was over.

L.O.S. Come here and we ripp you off and smile while we do it!

Nope, i do love Thailand dont get any ideas. But this one is amusing!

  5. I love the chicken burgers from 7-11.

Their chicken steak burger with mustard and onion use to keep me alive when i was on the road in Thailand. Until we discovered a few real good restaurants on the way. Nowadays i even prepare a few roadbaguettes before i leave the house because food on the road is uneatable. But if i ever run out and not are close to one of our spots, a 7/11 chicken steak burger still gets me trough the day. Highly reccomended junkfood! :D:o .

  6. A shot of sang som or regenzy, some chickenfingers (with nail on), papaya, tre of those small black crabs that i would never dream of eating because im not born in isaan, chilli, chilli, chilli, chilli and some chilli. Do it in a mixer 5 minuites. Poor it in a glass that is filled to the top with ice. A little leo or soda always work to top it of.

Now, THAT´s a taste of Thailand. The other one will just confuse impressions later on.

  7. I´m too lazy to scan over the 18 pages of this thread, but i clearly remember that someone said 5000 new hotelrooms are being built on the island. I think it was highdiver. Since i didnt check up exact qoutes, just correct me if i am wrong.

While we not agree on alot, i think highdiver was actually saying that the fact that so many new rooms are being built will create problems for hotelbuisness on this island. (Once again, correct me if i am wrong). In this point i (very rare) find myself in agreement with the good old mister bs highdiver. (Amazing isnt it? :o ).

But, i have a question for highdiver, or anybody else that care to comment:

Who will suffer? The newly built hotels, or the old and established? I would think within years, or maybe even only a year from now, hotels/resorts will have to close down. But will it be the new ones or the old ones? While i, if i were a tourist, would prefer to live in a brand new resort/hotel over a old and worn one, at the same time of course the established buisness already have a returning customerbase that come every year, right? Between 2001 and 2005 i always stayed at op bungalow. In the beginning i paid 450 baht for a beachfront bungalow. In 2006 i asked them and the price was 1700 baht in januari, wich is why i stopped staying there. At that year (my last as a tourist) i moved to ban suan sook. Newer and cheaper. So, what is your take on this? I´m assuming we agree most of us that some hotels will suffer. But who will it be? New ones or old ones? Word is yours........

  8. buy 2000 baht worth of aussie rib eye and have another bbq to stimulate good will to all mankind.

1000 worth of aussie ribeye and 200 worth of Leo for when the grill and steaks are getting ready. 500 will go to a bottle of gilbeys and mixtures. What a day. Hangover the day after. But man it´s worth it. :D .

Ohh, 300 left? Might get the wife out of the house for an hour or two. While we are creating a dreamscenario we might just get her out of the picture. :D:o .

  9. They had their own "singapore sling" for years. "Mai Thai". Or at least i always thought it was a Thai national drink. Did i misunderstand that? :D:D .

    did you ever

I guess i did, thx for the info! :D .

Anyway, im with samuian in using Thai ingredients. For istans the 99 crown wiskey. "a selection of the finest scotish malts, carefully blended with pure Thai alcohol" as it says on the bottle. Very good in drinks. :wai::o !

Mai Thai = Not Thai :D

Wow, poorsucker. After all these years you are starting to pick up some thai on those courses, hahaha. But yeah, i been thinking in those lines for years and my wife who seem to think it is a Thai drink could never explain the name, hahaha. Well, i learned something new today aswell! :P .

Edit: And while they are at it, they should take advantage of the nice fresh fruits they have in Thailand, when creating a Thai drink.

  10. You know you are in Thailand when you book a time with any servicecompany, they say "i come afternoon sir" and dont show up until 4 days later after you reminded them 6 times/day. And you know you are in Thailand when they show up with a smile like nothing happened and they are doing everything as agreed. No appologies for being late.

  11. The prob is that many families can earn a small living with selling BBQ chicken, fruit juices or running a small shop. More and more 7/11 means that those families (mostly locals) will face huge problems.

John1, Sanpet is probably the best shop in Samui and there were the first to stock western food and beverages in Samui. If husband would not have been shot by locals there would have been another Sanpet in Chaweng many years ago.

7/11 is a pest, they promote fat fast food and the oversugared soft drinks.

Sanpet is not one of the best shop in Samui for western food at ALL, unless you like expire food, often overpriced, shopping in a place

where the aircon is off to save money and the old cashier lady is absolutely rude and visibly greedy.

Colibri in chaweng is a professional place to buy western food, that's also why he supply many of the best rest. on the island.

If no Tesco or Big C I would not even buy my eggs in a thai shop, would you ?

I'm not complaining about Thai shop / Food, otherwise I can go back to EU and buy what I like,

I'm just saying that having a choice I prefer and feel more safe to buy in Tesco.....

7/11 come on, not even Thai people buy food there except some drinks and plastify Hamburgers,

7/11 can not be consider competition even for those Thai shops...

Last but not least thai shops just sell the same things all over, if they like improve the sales and eventually see

also some farang walking in, shop owners should diversify the products to find their own clientele,

(maybe start to clean the shop would be an idea to actract new potential customers...)

but too lazy to do it, better just complain and point fingers to Tesco rather then wake up in the morning and work !

Ophs sorry I said work, my fault...I want to say wake up in the morning and Think ! Ophs other mistake, ok I give up...

I´m not gonna join a debate of wheter or not sanipet or colibri is better. I do agree on the rude cashier in sanipet. But in all fairness, in that sence, colibri is only slightly better! That guy do have days when he can´t help you enough and you are so, so welcome. But he does have days when he can be VERY rude aswell!

Ohh, edit: Need to be fair to him and agree that he does keep things frech. Never got anything bad from there. Allthough nowadays most of the stuff can be bought at other places on the island and alot of his groceries is bought in tesco or bigc for half the price. He does have some specialties only he have though.

  12. Thong Nai Pan Noi.

From Thong Sala to Thong Nai Pan is about 150 baht a person if taking the regularly scheduled songthaew. There are no regularly scheduled songthaews from Hadrin to Thong Nai Pan so you will be paying for what is esssentially a round trip in a songthaew. Price is negotiable, but I would guess a minimum of 500 but it is more likely to be at least a thousand.

Alternatively, you could take a taxi boat from Hadrin to Thong Nai Pan, no idea what those would charge but I'd say at least the same since, once again, you will essentially be paying for a round trip as the taxi boats do not regularly run there. I recall reading that there was a regularly scheduled large long tail boat that goes from Samui to Thong Nai Pan, but don't know what times that runs.

So, with that expert advice we may suggest a different route for the op. Take the ferry from ban rak to thong sala instead of hadrin first of all. Secondly, you could rent yourself a jeep from the renter right on the pier (is he still there?). I did that about a year and a half ago and if i remember correctly it was 600-700 / day. Cheap for the freedom of going wherever you want whenever you want. And, probably half of that money would be spent on taxis anyway.

Options are many, have a nice holiday! :o .

  13. We are staying in Samui for 2 months but fancy going to check out Lipa Noi on Koh Phanghan.

Anyone know what is a reasonable fare to pay in a taxi from Haadrin or Thon sala to Lipa Noi?

Always handy to know so we dont get ripped of too much hahaha!

    Cheers!

Good news. Lipa noi is in Samui not phagnan. Rip off guarantee if you try to use taxi on Samui though.... :o . But at least you save the money for the boat! :D .

  14. I think Mattias is getting ready for the fishing comp :o , he is practising the extension of a long line ,called TROLLING.

Wow, very good post. Infact i think it is one of the better you ever made when it comes to:

    1: Humor

    2: Timing

    3: Value for the reader.

4: Intelligent contribution to the subject of the thread.

You are getting good roo, few more years of practising and you might be able to come up with a post that will be worth reading. Keep working!

Dear Matthias, you'll find that most members appreciate Rooo's posts very much, he's famous for his wit and knowledge. Yours on the other hand are getting more and more embarassing.

I think Mattias is getting ready for the fishing comp :D , he is practising the extension of a long line ,called TROLLING.

This is "wit and knowledge" to you?

Well, sorry, i can fully understand how you would consider my posts embarassing!

  15. Koheestis post i will only comment quickly, a guy that seem to think he was on a high class VIP party when he went to reaggae pubs yearly freebie is a bit to much to even comment on, but the "cheers behind a bush" is a statement you are allowed to do the day you start paying for your own drinks. Most lightly you drank yourself drunk and ate yourself full, and spend less than 200 baht. I know you, dont try to brag. (And F.Y.I i been going to reaggae pubs anniversary before you knew where Thailand was, AND spending money, and i dont only go there once a year when its all free like you do).

While honoring sbk's request, I just want to politely point out that I first came to Thailand in 1997 - a full 5 years before some on this thread who will remain nameless. :D

Yep. Good thing to honor sbk:s fair request. I came to Thailand 1992 first time myself (has that got anything to do with the topic of this thread?). Whoever you talk about, (im sure its very interessting for you personally that you came here a good 5 years before somebody only you know, is it a poster on thaivisa?) its good you dont name names. :o . (Hard time to understand your post? Am i the only one?) :D:D .

  16. yYah, Antica Locanda is excellent, also the rest of the dishes are first class as well. There is a newer Italian a bit further towards Big Buddha called Rustico which does good pizzas too, one of the owners used to be the manager at Vechia Nappoli in Chaweng.

    Good old Hercules! :o .

He do great pastas but i personally dont like his pizzas. But thats personal taste, many people seem to like them though....

  18. Well, Thais or expats. It dosent really mean any difference when it comes to the touristnumbers now doeas it? "V.I.P";s. Was it the same qualification as 2 years ago=arrive early, or did you need to do something else for the freestuff this year? You would be the right man to answer this since you are everywhere freestuff is served, hahaha!

I was in the VIP area (arrrived late around 21:00) and each time I asked for one drink, they gave me two. I had 4 and left to other places to pay and spread the wealth (gotta do my part for the world economy). If you had gone - no matter how early - those security guys in camos would have had someone to toss in the lake and the bacteria and mystery fish would have left nothing but that Red Bull tank top with cigarette burn holes in it. You need to learn the language and become a citizen then perhaps you'll be allowed to properly take part in the local celebrations instead of being left to fend for yourself. In the meantime, buy that 4-pack of Cheers Beer and enjoy the fireworks from behind a bush. Sorry, no laughing smiley faces to insert here. The whole thing is just too sad for my buddy matthias. But, hey, I'll put the videos and pics on a flash drive for you along with that film, "American Carol" Then you can pull you TV outside and sit under that bush you have out front to "relive the moment". OK, maybe just one smiley - - :D

let me add one as well .. :D infect i will add another one :D " dinner with the chef of the biggest hotel in Fishermans village..not bophud not mainam not Chaweng... the "fishermans village largest hotel.".. and with the Chef. and this is how he bases facts about Samui tourists and tourism industry .. hahahahah had dinner with the chef. :o

Koheestis post i will only comment quickly, a guy that seem to think he was on a high class VIP party when he went to reaggae pubs yearly freebie is a bit to much to even comment on, but the "cheers behind a bush" is a statement you are allowed to do the day you start paying for your own drinks. Highdiver. F.Y.I fishermansvillage nowadays is a big tourist village. Chaweng and mae nam, has a much higher percentage of expats. And no, i didnt base that post or my statement only on the conversation with the chef (laugh all you want but the chef in the hotel know if the hotel is busy better than anyone, since he make breakfast and buy all things for the restaurant), but i also base it on figures (and 2 flights per day cancelled) by Bangkok airways, the fact that lomprayha been less than half booked, and to add to that i can today add that i jst came back to the island with a car on seatran ferry, and never ever before was i able to just go on the next boat 20 minuites after my arrival in donsak without a booking. And this is februari. And this thread is getting pointless. After 18 pages there is still people claiming this is the busiest highseason ever (or at least one, with very limited knowledge of the subject) and there is still the side i am on saying its more dead than ever this time a year. I dont think we can get any further in this discussion. Highdiver, choose to beleive whatever truth or "facts" you can come up with in your wildest dreams. Its still a very bad season for samui.

  19. First of all it was their 21th anniversery, and second of all it is always packed. You offer free food and free drinks and you get all the expats to go there and celebrate what they dont even know they are celebrating.

If you had gone you would have known that the free stuff was for the VIPs and at least half of those in the new section where it was all being offered were Thais, not expats.

Well, Thais or expats. It dosent really mean any difference when it comes to the touristnumbers now doeas it? "V.I.P";s.
