It's not unusual at all. The original visa stays the same, it's the reason for the visa extension that changes. The visa extension changes from Work Permit to Retirement. Unfortunately I can't answer the OP's question. I would assume he could change back to a Work Permit, but I struggle to think like an immigration officer.

You don't need to due your first 90 day report after being out of Thailand at CW. Do it by mail the first time, then online should be ok. I have not done 90 day reporting in person at CW in more than 10 years. I leave Thailand at least once a year. I always report by mail, but have recently switched to online reporting.
