  1. Like many people who live here, why should I pay income tax if I don't work here?

Like everyone else, I pay VAT on everything that I buy.

Well I would think that you have to pay for any service the government provides no matter where you live. If you don't work here then you don't have to pay income tax? Do you?

But to stay here you need a visa that either allows you to work here and pay tax or if over 50 a visa that allows you to declare your income up to the minimum requirement so you can bring that money into the country and spend it.

If you have a job outside the Kingdom but wish to reside here continuously without contributing to services that the government provides (not matter what you think of them) you , apparently, no longer can.

The 7% that you pay on your purchases, assuming you don't shop and mom and pop shops that don't charge VAT!, is insufficient to contribute to the services you use.

Where in the world can you reside without contributing locally, but while still working or drawing money from overseas? I suspect not many.

So, if you would have to prove you have a job in another country, or a work permit from another country, or income from another country, why not just create a visa class for these people and make a few quid out of them as well?

They could call it the "Work Abroad Live Thailand" (WALT) visa. 20,000 baht for multi-entry 12 month visa.

Of course, proof of income, employment etc etc needed for the application. They could also put a restriction on the visa that they must leave the country every 60 or 90 days, to create no benefit over coming in on a free 30 day visa exemption stamp, getting a regular 60 day tourist visa.

There is a huge amount of self funded, or offshore/onshore, or contract workers, or 6 months work in there home country and 6 months holiday in Thailand etc etc under 50 years of age market, that Thailand is missing out making a legitimate visa quid from, just to catch up with a very small percentage who work illegaly here.

I agree entirely but to keep the above people on par with those who live and work here the recipients of a "Work Abroad Live Thailand" (WALT) visa should pay tax on the minimum 50,000 baht a month, plus whatever the fees are for visa extension and work permit renewal. So if we round all that up let's just call it 20,000 baht a month for a WALT visa, not 20,000 a year, and be done with it. But of course WALT visa holders still cannot work here and if found working existing laws apply!

OR perhaps Thailand could emulate Malaysia's M2H visa plan?

  2. @ B1ade: Yeah, I just sent him a message on Facebook to get the source and will share it with you asap. I've been on an ED visa for 3 or 4 years (can't even remember now biggrin.png ) so I'm a bit worried about the outcome of all this... Wait and see. I'll keep you posted and if you find any relevant info please share as well wink.png

Reasonable I suppose. How long doe it take to learn conversational Thai? 3-4 years?

  3. Great post OP, and making a lot of sense. However, sense is not that common in Thailand.

It is a great post but will someone tell us where in the world can one reside with no reported income and without paying any tax?

OK there are a few exceptions like maybe Monaco, Isle Of Man, Cyaman Islands etc. but no "normal" countries surely.

OP could open a subsidiary office here? Pay tax on 50,000 and get a visa and a work permit?

  4. Which is about the same output as my electric toothbrush. thumbsup.gif

I usually do my best thinking in the shower.whistling.gif

To put the electric toothbrush in perspective?

    Honda CBR250R 249cc 24hp with after market exhaust 25+

    Honda CBR300R 286cc 30.5hp

Honda Forza 300 279cc 33.3hp with variator est 35.5, plus free flow exhaust 38hp (Engine still stock!)

So in the cc battle so far the scooter is ahead on power, that and the effect of CVT

stock honda forza 300 gives 25,4 hp crank and 26 nm torque makes it similar with honda cbr250r in terms of power but forza is 30 kgs heavier than honda cbr250r so you do the math.

Just working with the numbers I have. If i use yours the % improvement becomes 29hp.

Forza 250 was 24.8. So yes comparable to CBR250.

As a reference they got 10.9 from a PCX 125 which is about right. So dyno is not way off.

But as they say figures lie and lairs figurewink.png

Not saying the scooter is faster just the engine is not a dog or an electric toothbrush.

  5. Have you tried Amorn in Phuket? If not any burglar alarm company ? Even Homepro used to sell burglar alarms.

Lots of conventional industrial micro switches around with leaf, roller or button for around 120Baht. Relays about 115-140baht depending on rating. Will A/C provide the low voltage?

  6. They are clamping down on westerners by inconveniencing thousands of them to stop a small handfull from working.

Have they a clue how many Chinese enter the country on tourist visas and work illegally?

I bet it is far more than westerners.

Now they don't even need a visa.... crazy.

Yes but Chinese don't go on English language forums and criticize Thailand? How many singlet wearing Chinese used to do visa runs and abuse a friendly system?

  7. My dad swore by urine, but I'm afraid I could never come at this. In fact he used urine for a lot of things, such as watering the guavas. Our first car was a Vauxhall 12, and dad used to fill up the windshield reservoir with urine. It seemed to work really well.

Our dog tries. He's not tall enough but we have clean tires!

  8. You're legally allowed to carry loads which; project up to 1m behind the truck bed, 3m above it and 0.3m (it maybe 0.5m) either side.

If you took the tailgate off (to be legal) then up 1m of the load would be totally unsupported. So, it would seem reasonable to keep the taigate on in order to support more of the load. But, what is reasonable here?

Not driving around with the tailgate down and insecure due to lack of loading makes sense.

The two rules appear to contradict each other; in part, if not wholly. Only the Land Transport Office are capable of clarifying the requirement. But, yet again!

    Jerry

The gizmo pictured is no so much a bed "extender" as a rigid cargo net.

Take the tailgate off, put a piece of plywood in the bed which extends out to the gizmo pictured. Don't forget the red flag on the back and keep the load covered in on the Chonburi motorway. Should do it.

    or do this?

    9Qf9HSQ.jpg

Pardon the pun but this guy has it covered!

  9. For the street and maybe even the track you don't really need any ignition changes just some fuel adjustments so a Dobeck EJK would do the job.

There is a guy called Randy in Bangkok who has a Dobeck AFR plus

    m5H02Hk_SCLwKy1UiGJcxfQ.jpg

and would probably be happy to help with AFR optimization. You'd have to go to a track or find a suitable road though or i guess you could use dirt shop's dyno as Randy's dyno hasn't arrived yet.

If he is on the ball he might even chip in here!

  11. Wave 110i, 60Km/l

    Scoopy/Click 110i, 45Km/l

    It makes a big difference.

I hope your comment was ironic.

Let`s say the average Wave driver is doing 5000km per year on the moped. That would be about 3166 THB for fuel, if the litre is 38 THB.

Now the Scoopy or Click driver would use an uneconomical 4222 THB, a massive lavish of 1055 THB - per year.

Divided by 12 month it is still 87.96 THB per monththumbsup.gif !

So most years have 365 days, that means you could save 2.89 Baht per day.

Think about what you could buy for that moneyfacepalm.gif .

I would recommend to buy the wave and just for fun of it drive 15000km per year, then the savings triple.

At the end of each day you have something like 10 THB savedclap2.gif.

One small bottle Purra mineral water is about 10 THB.

There are motorcy taxis on our soi with 85,000 kms on. Over that period the owner could have saved 17,943 baht that is maybe 3 or 4 payments! but off course it won't be saved as such but...

But as has been said it depends on the riding style.

  12. Daffy,

The max height of the wall if there is one will be a local village/Tambon? regulation. Depends where you are. Usually between 2.5 and 3m .

If you haven't done it yet. As for the one post close to the house, missing one support will not hurt the structure or you can offset it to where the drill fits and use a spacer/bracket. (don't drill all the way though the blocks!) :-) Use 1m supports. 600mm above the wall, 400 for support. Or higher if you wish.Use std. M10 plastic wall plugs and #12 screws. I would use square hollow section steel as angle iron will end up perpendicular to the wall and prevent a continuous section of trellis and you'll have to do it in panels.

  13. Hmmmm. Official it is not allowed to feed a pump direct from the mains.

    What!

Every shop house in Bangkok pumps directly from the main, along with many houses.

Any of these will do the job , in your case the smallest one will be cheaper. You don't need the round pressure tank on the top. But if the cheapest one comes with one it doesn't hurt. Like the 3950 one in the picture.

    Mitsubishi+Water+Pump+Buriram.jpg

and you'll need a float switch in the top of the tank.

    Float_Switch_For_Pump_JK_M15_5.jpg

Same shop that sells pumps will sell the float and also have the inline conductive switch in case the mains are dry.

Best to go to the shop with a small sketch no matter how bad.

  14. If they are "std." local aluminium doors I would have a ride , drive around a see if you can spot an aluminium door/ window shop.

This is not in pattaya but is what to look for.

    http://goo.gl/maps/lZ9Zd

They will do it for you. If you go this route your might as well have all the doors done at the same time.

If there is someone at home to "guard the fort", then lift out the door remove the wheel set ( two screws ) and then go shopping. Depending on the builder you may find two small spacers screwed to the top rail in the "closed" position so you have to have the door in the open position to lift it out.

  15. How big/long is the wall? As this determines economics.

The first coat is VERY important it will determine the look of the wall forever. Oh and you have to paint both sides!

First brush all the surface dust off, then clean with Muriatic/hydrochloric acid from hardware store. Just dip a roller in the acid and coat the wall, just like painting. Rinse with a hose pipe. Then leave to dry.

Then I would use epoxy paint, yes it is expensive but it depends how many times in your lifetime you want to paint the wall? Once or often.

Whichever paint you decide on the first coat should be 20% paint, 80% thinner. Why? because the concrete absorbs the thinner, carries the paint into the pores and seals the concrete. Second coat you paint as normal.

OR as has been said just power wash it and leave it natural.

  16. the post of PM will no longer be primus inter pares it seems

    I wonder why that is?whistling.gif

In government there is always an opposition party to keep the leader in check.

Last time a certain policeman was in charge he paid no heed to the opposition. coffee1.gif

    Just sayin...

  17. I assume by now you know the direction the water "normally" takes. Dig a small ditch and put in a French Drain,

    3501008786_958cab4bca_m.jpg

Then near the end of your property dig a 1m x1m x1m deep hole and fill it with rubble (Soak away). Then having done your best you will have to let nature take its course:-)

How deep is the water table? Ie. how much lower is the lake from your property. If not so deep you could dig all the way down to the water table and then fill with rubble that way the water will find its own way beneath your neighbor's 2m strip.

If the strip is only 2m to the lake and if the soil is not Bangkok Clay, you could dig down and run a PVC pipe under the 2m. Like so..

    img_dig_under_pathway.jpg

You are in a trench on your side and if you angle the pipe slightly down towards the lake

I would instal the PVC pipe at the same time as you "drill the hole" from inside the PVC pipe. High pressure washer if you have one is good for this!
